Dear Friends,Transformational change and Personal Empowerment at Twin Cities RISE! go hand-in-hand. It is the Empowering aspect of our program that we believe sets us apart, and is the greatest contributing factor in the success of the people we serve. We confirm these successes, and the value of Personal Empowerment, in measurable ways: Job retention exceeding 80%; Change in income of 355%; a Return on Investment to the state of more than $7 for every $1 invested; and a steep drop in recidivism. At Twin Cities RISE! Personal Empowerment is a class and a curriculum. But it is much more – it is an organizational culture, a way of communicating, and a way of being. It is a culture that respects the dignity of every person, that teaches and practices high standards of personal accountability, and one that teaches practical skills that help participants build healthy relationships in both their professional and personal lives. When this all comes together, we see truly transformational changes. There are five key steps on the Personal Empowerment journey at Twin Cities RISE!: 1) Self-Awareness, 2) Emotional Regulation, 3) Self-Esteem, 4) Empathy and 5) Relationship Management. In addition to the training, our coaches have one-on-one meetings weekly with participants to reinforce the Personal Empowerment lessons. All employees also understand that, to have credibility, we must all model Empowered behavior. We do this in ways large and small, such as creating a welcoming environment, resolving conflicts in a direct but respectful manner, and holding ourselves accountable to the highest levels of professionalism. Our graduates are prepared to succeed. They have the employment skills, the resiliency skills, and the belief in themselves to sustain success. Our high job retention rates are a strong testament to the quality of their preparation. As we look ahead, we are increasingly partnering with other nonprofits such as the Northside Achievement Zone, the NetWork for Better Futures, and Hope Community, bringing them the value of Personal Empowerment training so they too can sustain success for the people they serve.Serving a critical need in our community is humbling, and it is an honor. There is nothing more gratifying for us than to help this transformational process, one person at a time. As we continue to grow, we aspire to take these transformational outcomes to an even greater scale in our community.Thank you for your support!

In 2010, we told you the stories of TCR! graduates Cedric Taylor and Comanche Fairbanks. Cedric came to TCR! with barriers of unemployment and a criminal record. He left in 2009 with a job as a Debt Collector at iQor, a renewed sense of self-esteem, and a second chance to care for his family. “I got advice from coaches about the outlook you should have on life. Just because you’re from a certain environment doesn’t mean you can’t make a change,” Cedric says. “I’m enjoying what I’m doing right now. It’s a great opportunity.”Comanche needed to support his wife and seven kids, but couldn’t hold down a full time job and lacked the motivation to succeed. After unmasking a talent for teaching others with the help of his coaches, Comanche worked full time as a Recruiter and Personal Empowerment Facilitator at TCR!. He’s since moved on to become Lead Youth Entrepreneurship Specialist at Migizi Communications. “I will forever embrace all that TCR! has revealed to me about myself, all the friendships I’ve made and all my new ways of being,” Comanche says. “I know this is only the beginning and I will embrace my greatness.”

With her southern drawl, quick wit, and thought-provoking insights, keynote speaker Dr. Ruby Payne held the attention of the 350 attendees at the Annual Report to Stakeholders Luncheon. Dr. Payne, an educator, speaker and writer, discussed her mission of positively impacting the lives of individuals in poverty throughout the world. “If you just give and give and give, but don’t give any capacity at the same time, eventually you’ll have a group of people who can only survive if people give them resources. It’s only when you give resources and the capacity to develop your own resources that you can be sustainable as a community,” Dr. Payne said. “And one of the reasons I’m so pleased to be with you today is this is what Twin Cities RISE! does.”After President & CEO Art Berman updated the group on successes and outcomes, TCR! graduates Anthony Boone and Comanche Fairbanks shared their stories of personal and professional transformation. “TCR! not only believed in me, they went above and beyond to make sure I believed in myself,” Anthony said. “I now find myself more tolerant of others and the wide range of diversity that work now offers.”

In the last three years, Jaime Wright has gone from homeless to having a home; from addicted to sober; and from jobless to employed full time. After graduating from high school and starting college, Jaime’s life quickly became filled with dealing drugs, substance abuse, homelessness and jail. After a while, his lifestyle became too much to handle. “I used to just take from people,” Jaime says. “I was tired. I was fed up. I was worn out. I couldn’t ask for any more help.”Jaime came to Twin Cities RISE! through the Awali program, where he found strong male role models for the first time in his life. After transferring into the Core Program, Jaime completed an internship at TCR!. But it wasn’t easy—he nearly quit the program twice. Jaime’s coaches, instructors and the constant reminder of Personal Empowerment were what kept him moving forward. “I’m a go getter. So that was always a plus for me even though I had my issues. If you gave me an inch, I’d take a foot,” Jaime says. “But if it wasn’t for empowerment, I wouldn’t have lasted.”

In 2010, he was hired full time at Dunwoody Academy, a local charter high school, now called Metro Tech Career Academy. In his job as a Behavioral Specialist, Jaime uses his own experiences on a daily basis to encourage and motivate his students—many of whom come from difficult backgrounds as well. He demonstrates what he learned from Personal Empowerment, and hopes to one day teach those skills to elementary school kids as a career. “I love kids. I love passing on positive information and turning negatives into positives,” Jaime says. The other passion in Jamie’s life is wrestling. Throughout the toughest times in his life, wrestling kept him going, and he now spends his evenings and weekends coaching local youth—including his daughter, who lives with him. Jaime says, “I wake up and say—and I do believe—that I’m lovable, important and valuable. I think empowerment is going to be my future.”

Success Computer Consulting (SCC) truly lives up to its name, providing a path to success for the TCR! participants they hire. In 2007, founder and President Erik Thorsell hired his first TCR! participant at the network consulting and service firm. Since then, SCC has employed three more participants, including one in 2011. “We started interviewing TCR! participants out of a desire to give good people a chance. We figured we were ‘giving’ something to them by offering a job,” Erik says. “Now we know that TCR! is a great source of committed, well-prepared staff for our growing company – so we interview them because it’s the place to find the best people.”But SCC’s commitment to TCR! doesn’t stop there. In 2011, they funded the redesign of TCR!’s web site, provided a technology audit, and worked as consultants for TCR!’s information technology needs. “We love the feeling of doing social good while hiring winning staff who are truly grateful for the job,” Erik says.

“Twin Cities RISE! matches two needs beautifully: the need for talented staff on our part and the need for stable, reliable, respected work on the part of participants.” – Erik Thorsell, President, Success Computer Consulting

Dwaine Simms, Director of Coaching, is truly a presence at TCR!. Better known as “Mr. Simms” to both participants and staff alike, his calming voice, wise spirit, and strong sense of community make him a go-to person for advice and encouragement. “Coaching is about relationships. Among key resources impoverished people need to come out of poverty is access to supportive, thoughtful and resourceful people. Coaching provides this,” Dwaine says. Between teaching courses, managing a caseload of participants, and leading a group of other coaches, Dwaine makes time to think strategically about TCR!’s direction and help influence change in the community as a whole. “TCR!’s coaching model is ever changing to meet the demands of participants. Coaches encourage, cajole, inspire and document activity toward achieving a goal. It is adaptable and flexible enough to respond to the participants’ needs in the moment.”

“Participants often talk about the difference their Coach made in how they view themselves, who was there to have their back, and

what it means to have someone who you can trust.”

2011 was a record-breaking year for the TCR! Internship Program. It was the year with the most interns (111), most internship sites (40) and the most participants hired at their internship sites (9) since the program began in 2009. Turning Point, a chemical dependency counseling and treatment organization, has consistently contributed to the success of the Internship Program. They hosted two interns in 2011 and hired both full time, adding to their long history as a TCR! partner. Interns at Turning Point gain meaningful work experience and skills, adding to their resumes and engaging in a professional environment. And Turning Point has also seen positive results from the relationship. They’ve saved more than $50,000 annually on salaries and benefits while receiving quality support. “Both our organizations are designed to provide services that incorporate the holistic needs of our participants,” Elizabeth says. “As a non-profit, we should step up to the plate and hire the people who are having a hard time finding employment.”

“We have found the interns that are part of TCR! are more focused and committed to staying employed.” – Elizabeth Reed, Chief Operating Officer, Turning Point

Mary Upjohn is a familiar face around Twin Cities RISE!. The development team knows her for her three years of dedication to Music on the Mississippi, TCR!’s annual gala, while other staff see her frequently around the office volunteering. But most importantly, participants know her for the time she spends with them in mock interviews—a job she says is the most fulfilling of all. Upjohn started as a volunteer for Music on the Mississippi in 2009 where she served as auction co-chair, and moved to co-chairing the event in 2010. While she excels behind the scenes, Upjohn is truly a star one-on-one with TCR! participants. Through mock interviewing, she helps participants gain the skills they need to secure a full time job. “Their growth in confidence and the ability to market their skills in a clear and positive manner is truly inspiring,” Mary says. “It has been my good fortune to interact with these highly motivated individuals as they work toward achieving their goals.”

“TCR! is a first-rate organization and I am honored to play a small role in their drive for success.”

Monday through Friday, you can find Kelly Tischner on one of the top floors of the IDS Center in Downtown Minneapolis, working with legal assistants in her job as a General Office Clerk at Lindquist & Vennum law firm. But just a few years ago, Kelly’s life looked much different. She never held a job, had no GED and was just getting out of jail and treatment due to substance abuse. When Kelly came to Twin Cities RISE!, she didn’t know what to expect from it. “When I first came, I was just there to get out of my sober living house,” Kelly says. “But the empowerment classes really opened my eyes a lot.”Personal Empowerment was key to helping Kelly find strength, confidence and responsibility after many years of struggles. “I regulate emotions every day,” Kelly says. “With Personal Empowerment, it stays with you and you don’t forget.” In 2011, Kelly was honored with the TCR! Robert Morris Empowerment Award for being a model of Personal Empowerment on the job and in life.

While at TCR!, Kelly was able to get custody of her four boys. She moved out of her father’s home and into her own place. After an internship and contract work, she was hired full time at Lindquist & Vennum. And, as of April 2012, Kelly has been sober for four years. “I learn more every day and I expand my skills every day,” Kelly says of her job. “It gives me something to look forward to every day. It shows my kids responsibility. It’s an all-around positive thing to be working.” Kelly hopes to go back to school, and possibly become a paralegal. She now knows that the goals for her life and her children are attainable by staying empowered and committed. “Before, I used to do drugs and I wasn’t there for my kids,” Kelly says. “Now, I’m there every day.”

The General Mills Foundation is widely known for its generous and extensive work in the community, and Twin Cities RISE! is pleased to be a long-standing partner with this iconic Minnesota organization. TCR! founder and board chair Steve Rothschild is a former General Mills executive, and the company has contributed by hiring participants and providing volunteers, on top of significant donations from the Foundation. “[TCR!’s] mission dovetails with General Mills’ mission of nourishing communities and with our commitment to diversity to uplift and enrich the lives of everyone in our community,” says Ellen Goldberg Luger, Executive Director of the General Mills Foundation. Since 2001, the General Mills Foundation has contributed more than a half-million dollars to TCR!, helping sustain the innovative work skills training program as well as develop new collaborations to end poverty in the Twin Cities.

“TCR! has established a leadership role in the community with its innovative, outcomes based work.”

On September 25, the third annual Music on the Mississippi (MOTM) fundraising event celebrated the many ways the Twin Cities RISE! community helps transform lives. A surprise flash mob-style program kept guests on their toes, while a silent auction and Dixieland jazz by Metro Retro provided entertainment throughout the evening. The event was chaired by Carol Cushmore with co-host Mayor R.T. Rybak and featured MC Frank Vascellaro and TCR! graduate Cedric Taylor. “I consider TCR! a life jacket when I was on the verge of drowning,” Cedric said.

It’s obvious when you walk through the door at Urban Homeworks that David Green has a background in customer service. From his spot at the front desk of the Minneapolis affordable housing nonprofit, David greets you with a smile and friendly conversation.

“I really like being able to help people out and get that feeling of giving back,” David says. “I’m trying to get to know everybody who comes in the door.”Through Twin Cities RISE!, David secured his secretary position at Urban Homeworks. But before he found the stability of a full time job with benefits, a series of events sent David’s life downhill. When David came to TCR!, he had work experience in banking and carpentry, and an Associate Degree in Electrical Construction/Maintenance. But he was unemployed and dealing with a history of alcoholism, drug addiction, unstable housing, and separation from his wife and children. With a felony in his background, finding a job that would accept his history was a challenge.

At TCR!, David worked on his confidence and self-esteem through Personal Empowerment, and gained on-the-job experience interning at the front desk at TCR!. He earned a promising part time job in energy auditing, but a cut in funding meant the end of the position and a feeling of defeat. “When I was going through all that stuff, I wasn’t a happy person. I wasn’t David,” he says. “All the people at Twin Cities RISE! really helped me become me again.”After another internship, coaching, and lessons on how to discuss his felony in interviews, David received his full time job at Urban Homeworks. He now finds himself with co-workers he says are “like family,” better housing, and more time with his two young children. “I generally try and be a happy person, look at the bright side and help people smile,” David says. “I never knew my dad, so I really want [my kids] to know me, and I want to be active in their lives.”
