MissionThe mission of Twin Cities RISE! (TCR!) is to provide employers with skilled workers – primarily men from communities of color in the Twin Cities area – by training under- and unemployed adults for skilled jobs that pay a living wage of at least $20,000 annually.

Our Innovative ApproachWe accomplish our mission by providing a unique job training program for adults living in deep poverty that combines work skills and Personal Empowerment training. Personal Empowerment is the lifeblood of TCR!, and a cornerstone of our success.

Challenges OvercomeUnstable housing. Criminal history. Chemical dependency. Chronic, long-term unemployment. Low academic achievement. Our participants overcome these and other barriers to achieve career success and financial self-sufficiency.

Our participants learn that they have core value: they are lovable, important and valuable.

Why It WorksPersonal Empowerment training helps the people we serve change the way they think about themselves and others. They acquire the emotional and resilience skills necessary to succeed both on the job and in every aspect of their lives.

The Non Nonprofit: For-Profit Thinking for Nonprofit Successby Steve RothschildFounder and Board Chair of Twin Cities RISE!

After serving as an Executive Vice President of General Mills, Steve Rothschild established TCR! in 1993, applying what he learned in his corporate career and his service on nonprofits boards to create a successful nonprofit organization. This book, published in 2012, describes how business principles can be translated to the nonprofit community. These principles are fundamental to the success of TCR!. They include: market-driven, Personal Empowerment, outcomes-focused, reciprocal accountability and learning-driven.

According to Rothschild, for-profit and nonprofit organizations can all benefit from applying these principles. He also observes that Personal Empowerment is critical. TCR! discovered that graduates who developed a sense of personal accountability through Personal Empowerment also developed the hope, self-esteem and perseverance necessary to succeed at long-term employment.Visit www.steverothschild.org for more information.

These are all powerful words at TCR!. They are even more powerful thoughts. They capture the essence of our transformational Personal Empowerment program, and they describe a process that our participants experience and a set of skills that they develop. It starts with a strong self-affirmation – I am; leads to developing a greater sense of self-esteem and confidence – I can; and finishes with a commitment to action and success – I will. This is the Empowerment journey that leads to full-time employment and a long-term, sustainable path to financial independence. It equips our graduates with the resilience skills needed to overcome the many barriers that they have. The best part about it? It works! These words and thoughts also describe the character of TCR! Our annual report’s Portraits of Success, as well as the articulate words of all of those profiled, reinforce this view. Our success formula integrates these Personal Empowerment skills with a strong skills training and coaching model, a thoughtful strategy, and a hard-headed commitment to continuous improvement. We are intentional about how we define and measure success, and believe we have learned the lessons of The Non Nonprofit well. Success at TCR! is measured by our long-term job retention rates that exceed 80%, a change in our graduates’ income of 311%, a return on investment to state taxpayers of more than $7 for every $1 invested, and a sharp drop in recidivism.

Although the challenges our participants face remain formidable, we look forward to the year ahead. We just started an innovative national pilot program, funded by the US Department of Labor, to provide tailored work skills and wraparound services (through partnerships) for female ex-offenders. We are also launching new Personal Empowerment training programs for several of our nonprofit partners, helping them provide better outcomes for their clients. As we continue to innovate and grow, we are honored by the strong support of so many key stakeholders: employers, volunteers, donors, and a dedicated, highly professional staff team.Thank you for your support!

2012 Job Retention upon graduation* from Twin Cities RISE!

“The biggest change in my life? I’m happy. I smile a lot now. People have confidence in me, because I have confidence in myself.”

“Before TCR! I had a destructive lifestyle. I was doing drugs. I wasn’t a good father and wasn’t a good son. I was just doing all the wrong things for all the wrong reasons” Cletus says.Cletus learned about TCR! while serving time in a correctional facility. Reflecting on his life, he decided he wanted something different. He was ready to change, and was aware of the challenges that stood in his way. He talks about how two aspects of TCR! contributed to his success turning his life around. One was the commitment and compassion of the staff.“By me taking a chance on myself, and by the staff taking a chance on me... I learned to trust more,” Cletus says. “And it’s just a good feeling being around people who project good energy.”The other was Personal Empowerment training. The Personal Empowerment concepts TCR! participants learn and use every day throughout the course of their training and employment ultimately help them make decisions that lead to more constructive, socially positive outcomes.

“It’s like: ‘okay, if I just react to this situation without thinking, then I’ll probably end up doing something I have no business doing.’ Which I always did in the past, without empowerment,” Cletus says. The choices Cletus is making are, indeed, more constructive. He is currently employed in maintenance and facilities assistance at Turning Point, Inc. – a job he enjoys because people depend on him to repair and maintain the appliances that make their lives easier and more comfortable. The next step for him is more education to help improve his career prospects, specifically classes in heating and ventilation/air conditioning. “Another goal for me is to reunite with my youngest daughter,” Cletus adds. “That’s one of my goals. The steps are already there.”

When Rodney enrolled with TCR!, he had a criminal background and an unstable housing situation. While he had a good employment history, a strong work ethic and a genuine desire to change, his past remained a barrier.Upon his arrival at TCR! Rodney embraced the Personal Empowerment concepts he was learning from day one. He set goals for himself, developed an action plan and became fully engaged in the process of finding a job.“I have to emphasize the empowerment program,” Rodney says. “I had to change the way I thought in order to change the way I live.”Personal Empowerment training has made a big difference in Rodney’s life, in his relationships with others and in his career. In fact, Rodney was one of two annual recipients of the Robert Morris Empowerment Award, given to one male and one female TCR! participant who demonstrate strong empowerment in their daily lives.

Today, Rodney is employed full time in a warehouse position at Northern Brewer Homebrew Supply. He has had several reviews and has received outstanding ratings. One of the things he enjoys about the job is the opportunity to share some of the wisdom he has gained with other TCR! participants.Like everyone who has ambitions, Rodney still sometimes wishes for speedier progress toward his career goals. And he remains committed and is also philosophical about his efforts.“Sometimes it just takes longer,” Rodney says. “But things you work for, things you strive for – the reward is often so much greater once you obtain the goal,”“So TCR! has certainly changed my life,” Rodney adds. “And I think it can change others.”

$6,105Pre-program Post-program

$25,077“I feel successful at this point. And I feel blessed I was able to overcome where I was and [be] where I am now.”

Paula was a single mother of two children, had no job, little motivation and low self-confidence. However she decided to change all that after watching her mother transform her life by succeeding at TCR!.“Before TCR! I didn’t really care enough about myself to get up and do what I needed to do,” Paula says. “So I was in a rut in my life where nothing really mattered.” At TCR!, Paula learned important job skills that prepared her for her current full-time position at Northside Achievement Zone. She was hired as a receptionist and was promoted to Family Academy Coordinator. In addition to learning hard skills, the Personal Empowerment training played a role in her career success.“Empowerment has really taught me how to be a better me.” Paula says. “And how to choose who I let into my life. It also helped me know that no one can make me angry or push my buttons.”

Paula and her children now have stable housing, because of her steady employment. She owns a car, which gives her flexibility for job and child care responsibilities. And she has started to save money – she has bank accounts both for herself and for her children.Paula says the professional and personal growth she has experienced as a result of participating in TCR! continue to be a strong influence in her life. “I got the promotion, so now I’m just trying to figure out what I can do education-wise to better that in order to move forward in the organi-zation,” Paula says. “And in my personal life, I’m getting married.”

“We trust the fact that TCR! is going to give us somebody who is respectful, professional, hardworking. We don’t have to worry,” said Sam Ebert, Employment Specialist.

“To Sam’s point, there are certain things you look for: professionalism, honesty, integrity,” says Dusty Perryman, Assistant Director of Human Resources. “Being able to rely on TCR! and know they are being taught those skills, its very hard to train that. So when you find those people, you latch on to them,” Perryman adds. “Because we can train anyone to cook, to check in a guest at the hotel. But you can’t train honesty, humility.”The Hotel may have a lot of confidence in the quality of the job candidates TCR! refers to it. However, each TCR! candidate who is hired still must pass through a rigorous selection process, points out Sara Lebens, Area Director of Human Resources. And each TCR! job candidate who is hired can be proud of his or her accomplishment, because it is not easy.“Sam goes through about 3,500 applicants a year,” Lebens says. “They [TCR! candidates] are competing with all of them. So to have individuals who have been groomed through TCR! and coached and trained, to be selected is fantastic,” Lebens observes. “It says a lot about the organization.”In addition to hiring qualified job candidates, employee volunteers help conduct job interview role playing exercises, contribute to training opportunities for TCR! clients and frequently speak to TCR! classes about employment-related topics in the hospitality industry. The hotel also plays an important role in helping guide TCR! policy by contributing to its Employer Advisory Panel.

“They use a business model that says, ‘we get paid for what we do.’ That is consistent with what we believe. We don’t get paid for trying” says Dan Cain, President.

TCR! and RS EDEN created an innovative national pilot service model in 2012 as part of our “Allies Against Poverty” strategy. This is an important step in implementing our stategic plan, which was approved by the Board of Directors in December, 2011. Our plan is to build and sustain a series of flexible alliances to more effectively serve low-income adults. We will improve employment outcomes by partnering to deliver integrated solutions for a broad portfolio of potential needs. In August, 2012, TCR! and RS EDEN received a $1.5 million funding commitment from the U.S. Department of Labor to implement a strategic alliance called “Reentry Connect.”Located in St. Paul, Reentry Connect is designed to improve the long-term labor market prospects of ex-offenders, particularly women. TCR! and RS EDEN each contribute strengths from their highly specialized areas of excellence.RS EDEN provides integrated case management, including housing and support service referrals. TCR! delivers its innovative combination of job skills and Personal Empowerment training. And taken together, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.“We’re case managing families,” says LuAnne Buck, Director of Client Services. “We’re giving second chances. Sometimes third, fourth and fifth chances to help support the families. Because ultimately, these women are raising the next generation.”“And when you think about excellence, it’s about people.” says Corey Sentieri, Director of Reentry Connect. “You FEEL different when you walk in to TCR!. Everyone is so optimistic and fresh and positive and driven and all on the same page. It’s overwhelming in a really good way.”

“I’ve seen peoples’ lives transformed. People who had not only given up on themselves, but also people who others had given up on.”

Regina joined TCR! ten years ago, as a foundational coach. After helping participants learn the basic job skills and behaviors necessary to succeed in the workplace, she was asked to add Personal Empowerment training to her responsibilities.

To have a deep understanding of the curriculum, she challenged herself to go through the workbook. What she discovered was, in her own words, “a need not just for participants of TCR!, but a need for humanity.”“I studied the material,” Regina continues. “I began to teach the material. And it caused a real burning inside of me. Not just a passion, but a flame that grows each time I see the sparkle in someone’s eyes as the light of Empowerment comes on.”Coaching is hard work. But Regina says it’s definitely worth it.“It makes it worth being tired when I get off of work,” Regina says. “It makes it worth coming in every single day. Because I know somebody’s life is going to be changed. But not just somebody’s – my life is.”

“If you can make a difference – whether through volunteering or monetarily – it will be amazing for you and for them.”

“And you know that your time and money are very effectively used, because it is proven that it is returned six to seven times,” she quickly adds.Kris speaks authoritatively about the volunteer experience, the careful fiscal stewardship of TCR! and the outcomes it produces because she is an active contributor. Kris regularly participates in mock interviews to help TCR! participants practice the skills they are learning. In addition to her tactical support working directly with TCR! participants, Kris makes a variety of important strategic contributions to the organization. She led the team that planned, promoted and hosted the 2012 Music on the Mississippi annual fundraising event. She also serves on the Development Committee.Of all the worthy causes to support locally, why does Kris choose to give her time, talent and money to TCR!? And why does she encourage others to consider supporting TCR!?“I think the Empowerment course is pretty innovative,” she observes. “Each time we break a cycle, that’s amazing. TCR! is not only touching just individuals, it impacts whole families for generations to come.”

“It [TCR!] was the first organization we heard of that approached its business as a performance based nonprofit. To me that was new,” says Margie Soran.

“I think TCR! has given us, as we’ve gotten more into philanthropy, a benchmark to use against other organizations,” Phil continues. “One of the things I really like is they instill in their clients and their organization that people have got to earn it. It’s not an entitlement. And I tend to react real well to earning programs versus entitlement programs.”As business owners and entrepreneurs – and like many others who give financial support to nonprofits providing human services – the Sorans approach their work as an investment in the community. But why have they given so

generously since learning about TCR! ten years ago?

“We really resonated with the empowerment piece,” says Margie. “We liked that it is trying to help people in the long-term. It’s not just a short-term fix. It’s a lifelong improvement.”“And another thing was the strong statement from them that they are very results oriented. And they set very high criteria in order to reach those results, which really resonated with us,” Margie adds. What about advice for donors and others who may wish to consider TCR! in their philanthropic goals? Without giving it a second thought, the Sorans quickly list a number of ways you can see how your dollars are spent.Phil and Margie together: “Go see it in action. Do a site visit. Go to an Empowerment class. Go watch a graduation. Go mingle with some of the clients. Go feel it. Go face the problem [of solving generational poverty] head-on yourself, too.”

Planned Giving Program LaunchedIn 2012 TCR! launched the Rothschild Legacy Circle, a new planned giving group named after TCR! Founder and Board Chair, Steve Rothschild, and his wife Marilyn. Donors are now committing to continuing their legacy at TCR! with a planned gift in their will or estate.

To find out more about the Rothschild Legacy Circle, please contact [email protected]
