Jake sChumannhead CoaCh - fourth season

st. xaVIer unIVersIty (1997) Texas A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Jake Schumann completed his third season at the helm by continuing the remarkable improvement of the Islanders program. After adding more wins in each of his first two years, the Islanders kept the streak going with a 35-22 record and an appearance in the Southland Conference Tournament in year three. The 35 wins are tied for the third-most in school history, matching the 2002 team’s win total. The Islanders were 6-6 against teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament and had two wins over Top 25 opponents with victories over #15 Texas and #21 Texas A&M. His 2010 team broke the school record for runs scored in a season by a wide margin, producing 316 to break the previous high of 212, set in 2004. The Islanders also set new records with a .326 team batting average and 38 home runs. The postseason appearance by the Islanders was the first time since joining the Southland Conference. In Schumann’s second season at the helm, the Islanders improved on their first year’s performance by going 23-31 and setting a new school record for Southland Conference wins with a 12-16 record in league play. In addition to the improved performance on the field, Schumann continues to improve the talent base of the Islander program with some of the best junior college and high school players in the nation. Schumann had a record of 21-32 in his first season as the head coach. That record raised the Islander win total by nine games, from 12 in 2007 to 21 victories in 2008. Schumann came to A&M-Corpus Christi from Texas A&M-Kingsville where he was the head coach for four seasons. In his final season, he guided the Javelinas to a 34-22 record and a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament. He left TAMUK as the all-time winningest softball coach in school history with 120 victories. During his time at Kingsville, he guided the Javelinas to three 30-win seasons and improved the team batting average in each of the four seasons he was there. Schumann coached 19 All-Lone Star Conference players, as well as a Pitcher of the Year and the school’s first ever Player of the Year. He also coached the program’s first All-American. Pr ior to arr i v ing i n Kingsville, Schumann was the head coach at Carl Albert State College (Okla.) for two years. While at Carl Albert, Schumann turned the team around almost overnight. The year before Schumann arrived, the team posted a 19-35 record. With Schumann at the helm in 2002, Carl Albert went 31-23 and was the Region II runner-up. In 2003, the Vikings went 31-17 and finished third in the Regional Tournament. During his time at Carl Albert, the team posted batting averages

of .301 in 2002 and .331 in 2003. His team produced five All-Region infielders for the 2003 season. As concerned about his student-athletes performance off the field as on, Schumann’s teams produced grade point averages of 3.39 in 2002 and 3.19 in 2003. He was also an Educational Guidance Specialist at Carl Albert. Schumann was responsible for academic and career counseling for ETS students, provided information on secondary and post secondary opportunities, developed and conducted college preparatory and leadership workshops and served as an advisor to new employees. Prior to his time at Carl Albert, Schumann was an assistant coach at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami, Okla. At Northeastern, Schumann assisted in all aspects of the program, including recruiting, budgeting, travel, on-field instruction, classroom monitoring and field maintenance. Northeastern Oklahoma posted a 101-16 record in his two seasons with the squad. In 2000, Northeastern finished third in the nation. In his four seasons as an assistant and head coach in Oklahoma, Schumann coached 19 all-regional players and six All-Americans. While he was at Northeastern, he also worked as an Alternative Education Instructor at Will Rogers Middle School. He developed and carried out lesson plans for an alternative education setting. Schumann also taught math, science, social studies and English. Prior to that, he served as assistant baseball coach at Hill-Murray High School in St. Paul, Minn. While at Hill-Murray, he was a student teacher for Harding High School and Murray Magnet Junior High School. Schumann is a native of Maplewood, Minn. He played baseball for two years at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M before transferring to Ball State University. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from St. Xavier University in Chicago, Ill. He also has a Secondary Social Studies Certification from Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn. Schumann has served as an athletic coordinator for the National Youth Sports Program sponsored by the NCAA.

Schumann received his master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Texas A&M University-Kingsville in May 2006 and is married to the former Julie Campbell. The couple has two daughters, eight-year old Jenna and three-year old Isla Jade.

In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions.

What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 47 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence.

On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi expanded the Southland into the Little Rock, Ark., metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. Central Arkansas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage.

In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State University-San Marcos.

All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Hunter Pence (UT Arlington), Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington).

The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international business and cultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleans area, to the historical cities of Nacogdoches,

Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to the home of the modern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, Baton Rouge, Austin, and Shreveport.

The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball.

Continuing its tradition of innovation, the league launched the Southland Conference Television Network in the fall of 2008 and has already broadcast nearly 70 events. In just its second year of production, the network has already received recognition for its work. It received a College Sports Media

Award at the College Sports Video Summit in Atlanta in June 2010 for it production of the 2009 McNeese State vs. Stephen F. Austin football game, which was judged the best live game or event in its category. The network also collected three prestigious Tell Awards. Entering its third season in 2010-11, the network will expand its reach to roughly 6 million households throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.

The Southland Conference has repeatedly demonstrated

its commitment to the academic and athletic success of its student-athletes. With the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the league annually honors one male and one female scholar-athlete with a stipend for postgraduate study. The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to each institution’s male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average. The Steve McCarty Citizenship Award, initiated in 2005-06 and named after the former Stephen F. Austin athletic director, properly recognizes accomplishments off the court for a male and female student-athlete. Also, student-athletes with grade-point averages above 3.0 are honored on the Southland’s annual All-Academic teams and Commissioner’s Honor Roll. A record 934 student-athletes appeared on the honor roll following the 2010 spring semester.

In addition to providing expanding opportunities for student-athletes, the Southland Conference and its member institutions are very involved in various community outreach programs. Many of these programs provide positive life skills training such as academics, citizenship and leadership to school-aged students in Southland communities.

The goal of the Center for Athletic Academic Services is to provide services that enhance the academic experience and assist in the retention and development of student-athletes. CAAS promotes the department’s CHAMPS/Life Skills and CHOICES programs and the five commitment areas (commitment to academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, career development and service). Among the services offered are study hall, a computer lab, tutoring and learning assistants. Scholastic supervisors work with the department, students, coaches, faculty and staff to coordinate an athlete’s schedule, academic eligibility, and provide support.

The CAAS is located on the second floor of Classroom East and is directed by Jennifer Baker. She is assisted by Bailey Wilson, Kayleigh McCauley and Alfonso Ramos.

With the dedication of Island Hall in the summer of 2010, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Athletic Training moved into its new home, tripling the size of the former center. The new facility consists of 3,500 square feet, two Hydroworx Therapy pools, exam rooms, staff offices and a work area for graduate assistants and student assistants.

Under the direction of Jerry Hilker, the Head Athletic Trainer, assistant athletic trainers Julie Ellena, Sayuri Hiraishi and graduate assistants Liz Laird, Tracey Oakes and Suzy Schock, Islanders receive the best care in the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries. Support is provided by a handful of team doctors and student athletic trainers enrolled in the athletic training program.

Dr. Flavius C. Killebrew became the 10th President of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi on January 6, 2005, appointed by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.

Dr. Killebrew came to the University from Canyon, Tex-as, where he was Provost and Vice President for Aca-demic Affairs at West Texas A&M University (WTAMU). He was born and raised in the Texas Panhandle town of Canadian, where he worked the family ranch along-side his father and three brothers. He earned bachelor’s degrees from WTAMU in 1971 and a year later was awarded his master’s degree.

In 1976, Dr. Killebrew received a doctorate in zool-ogy from the University of Arkansas. That same year he returned to WTAMU as a professor of biology and moved through the faculty ranks, achieving tenured professor rank in 1988. He was named Director of the Graduate School, a title that changed to Dean of the Graduate School and Research in 1991. He was ap-pointed interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1994 and the following year, the appointment was made permanent.

The author of more than 60 journal articles, Dr. Kille-brew is still an avid researcher and frequent presenter at conferences and conventions. Based largely on his ef-forts and expertise, the Cagle’s Map Turtle Graptemys caglei has been recommended for listing as a threat-ened species.

Dr. Killebrew is active in several educational organi-zations, including the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Texas International Education Con-sortium and the Council of Public University Presidents and Chancellors. He is also on the Advisory Board of the Texas A&M University Press and the editorial review boards of several academic publications. In addition, he serves on the boards of the USS Lexington, the South Texas Institute for the Arts, and the American Bank Ad-visory Board.

Tim Fitzpatrick was named the third athletic director in the history of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi athletic de-partment on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, after spending four seasons in a senior leadership role in the Indiana University athletic department.

Prior to joining the Islanders, Fitzpatrick had served since January 2005 as the senior associate athletic direc-tor at Indiana. With the Hoosiers, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capi-tal construction and facilities management, and had over-sight of the football and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, in-cluding marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchan-dising, department website and publications.

During his tenure, he helped the department negotiate a $21 million contract with Adidas and worked exten-sively with Learfield Sports/IU Sports Properties and the Big Ten Network, who brought a combined $9 million in revenue to the program each year. He also saw his area help generate $1,971,183 in ticket sales revenue in ex-cess of budgeted projections, a 15-percent improvement.

Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous five years as COO and associate athletics director for ex-ternal operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and funds grow from $500,000 to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt WEPN-AM 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000.

Fitzpatrick arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive direc-tor of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Char-lotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts.

Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a simi-lar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in spon-sorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving.

Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA

football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue.

He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commis-sioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpat-rick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local televi-sion syndication efforts.

Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92.

A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his mas-ter’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.
