SUMMITLEAGUE

Now in its 29th year, The Summit League is in the midst of a renaissance, both on the playing fi eld and in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, the League produced a na onal champion, 11 All-Americans, eight Aca-demic All-Americans and 33 Academic All-District honorees. Originally formed in 1982 as the Associa on of Mid-Con nentUniversi es and later known as the Mid-Con nent Conference, The Summit League is in its fourth year of a rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athle c performances of all league student-athletes. Included in the plan was the league’s new name, the cre-a on of a new image and the addi on of three member ins tu ons. The Summit League has a combined enrollment of over 125,000at 10 member ins tu ons: Centenary College of Louisiana, IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois Uni-versity. In April 2009, the University of South Dakota accepted an invita on to join the league with full membership beginning in 2011-12 and currently serves as an associate member for swimming and diving. The League has one addi onal associate member in Eastern Illinois University, which currently competes in swimming and diving and will join in men’s soccer in 2011. Cen-tenary College will leave the league a er the 2010-11 season. These member ins tu ons pride themselves on providing quality ath-le c, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports, which include: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, so ball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and fi eld, men’s and women’s out-door track and fi eld, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives automa c bids to the NCAA tournament in all applicable sports. Since its incep on in 1982, The Summit League has had several tran-scendent moments on the na onal stage. In 1986, Cleveland State upset third-seeded Indiana in the fi rst round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tourna-ment on its way to a berth in the Sweet 16. A decade later, Valparaiso cap-tured the na on’s a en on when Bryce Drew hit “the shot” to defeat No. 4 seed Mississippi in an NCAA fi rst-round game and spark its Sweet 16 run.

The Summit League

More recently, Oral Roberts’ baseball program fi nished the 2004campaign with a na onal ranking and became the fi rst Summit League school to reach an NCAA Super Regional in 2006. Three years later, North Dakota State’s 2009 so ball team became the fi rst League member to win an NCAA regional and advance to the Super Regional round. During the 2008-09 bas-ketball season, South Dakota State’s women’s team was na onally-ranked throughout the year and capped its season with an NCAA Tournament fi rst round victory. The League has produced fi ve NCAA champions, four Olympic athletes and several All-Americans in the sports of track and fi eld, swimming and div-ing and cross country. Numerous professionals and several dra choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Base-ball fi rst round picks, a pair of NBA fi rst rounders and one WNBA selec on. Former Summit Leaguers Kevin Duckworth (NBA) and Kevin Seitzer (MLB) each were two- me all-stars during their professional careers. Recent and historical success coupled with an increased growthamong its membership base gives The Summit League a promisingfuture on the landscape of college athle cs.
