Overall, 16 le erwin-ners return for the Bison. “We need to use our experience to our advantage,” said head coach Pete Cuadrado. “It will allow us to play with confi dence.” A er pos ng a record of 10-8-2 in the regular season and earning a share of the regular season league crown, the Bison advanced to the Summit League tournament for the fi rst me in program history. Despite a 1-0 loss to IUPUI in the semifi nals, head coach Pete Cuadrado thinks the team can build on that ex-perience. “We feel like we can take another step foward,” said Cuadra-do. “Last year, we had three goals: make the league tournament, win the regular season and win the tournament. We reached two of the three goals and we have the same goals this year. We are capable of achieving all three.” Senior Candice D’Arcangeli and juniors Abbey Stra on and Ka-lani Bertsch were voted captains by their teammates. “The captains will set the standard for the team. It will be up to them to help push the team day in and day out. We have an

extremely hardwork-ing team that prac ces as hard as they play in the games and the cap-tains will help maintain that level.” In addi on to the 16 returning le erwin-ners, there are fi ve newcomers this sea-son. “We expect the younger players to step in and ba le for posi ons and show us what they are capable of,” said Cuadrado.

FORWARDS Seniors Quin Ryan and Candice D’Arcangeli will lead the forward line a er star ng every game last season. Ryan tal-lied 14 points last year with four goals and six assists and was a second team all-league performer. “Quin is always a threat to score,” said Cuadrado. “She has the ability to beat defenders and get a good shot off .” D’Arcangeli notched two goals and two assists in 2009. “Candice leads by example. She’s a hard worker and can cause problems with her constant movement,” said Cuadrado. The duo will be joined by junior Ka e Luce and sophomores Holly Chris an and Shannon Brooks. Luce brings speed and athle cism to the forward line, while Chris an makes the transi on from midfi eld. Chris an’s technical ability and composure will be assets for the Bison. Brooks brings fl air and interna onal experience to the squad as a member of the Guatemalan na onal team. Three freshmen will also compete for playing me. Sheri Fitzsimmons is a two- me all-conference selec on out of Cham-plin, Minn. and brings a strong physical presence to the fi eld. Ka- e Tallas hails from Alberta, Canada and can contribute with her

strong shot. Lakeville, Minn. na ve Brianna Wersal can connect passes well and brings athle cism to the squad.

MIDFIELD Juniors Michelle Gaff aney and Danielle Boldenow will lead an experienced midfi eld. “Michelle can help se le the game down,” said Cuadrado. “She’s great in the air and can win a lot of balls for us.” Boldenow’s vision allows her to show off her skills and she also has the ability to beat defenders one on one. She tallied two goals and two assists last year. Sophomore Brooklyn Dyce will join the pair in the midfi eld. Dyce was second on the team with fi ve goals last season and earned fi rst team All-Summit League accolades. She is a strong

Juniors Aubrey Bot and Morgan DeMike will add experience to the midfi eld. “Aubrey always plays with heart and goes 100 percent and Morgan can be hard to stop once she gets going because she’s got speed,” said Cuadrado. Freshman Stephanie Jacobson is a four-year le erwinner out of Eagan High School (Minn.) and can use her strength to push for playing me.

DEFENSE The Bison return the en re defense from the 2009 squad. Junior captain Abbey Stra on will lead the back line. She was a fi rst team All-Summit League selec on last year. “Abbey helps set the standard for the team. She’s like a coach on the fi eld,” said Cuadrado. Senior Marissa Wolfgram made the transi on to defender this summer a er playing primar-ily in the midfi eld her fi rst three years. “Marissa is a very consis-tent player,” said Cuadrado. “Her strength and composure will serve her well as a defender.” Junior Laura Wagner started every game last season and is a vocal leader for the Bison. Fellow junior Danielle DeMent’s strong, hard-nosed defense is an asset for the team. Junior Megan Dean will return to the fi eld a er missing the sec-ond half of last season with a knee injury. Freshman Jenna Miller, a na- ve of Champlin Park, Minn.,

will bring strong technical abil-ity and athle cism to the back line.

GOALKEEPERS Junior captain Kalani Bertsch returns a er star ng 18 games last season. She posted four shutouts in her sophomore cam-paign. “Kalani is very consistent,” said Cuadrado. “She has the abil-ity to make the game-changing saves. She is solid and inspires confi dence.” Sophomore Chris e Stemple played in three games a season ago and off ers great shot stopping ability. Redshirt freshman Kathy Kelsey off ers good size and strength in the air. “We have a very solid goalkeeping trio. They are all tough compe tors,” said Cuadrado.

SCHEDULE The Bison will be aiming for their second straight Summit League tournament berth a er reaching the tournament for the fi rst me in 2009. “We have a challenging non-conference schedule that will help prepare us for the Summit League games,” said Cuadrado. The Bison will take on two fi rst me opponents in Florida At-lan c and Miami (Fla.) and will also play three Missouri Valley

opponents in non-conference ac on. The team will also play 10 home games, the most in pro-gram history. NDSU will open the season with home games

against North Dakota and Wisconsin-Green Bay before traveling to Omaha, Neb. to play Iowa State and Creighton. A er playing in the Hurricane Cup in Miami, Fla., the Bison will return to Fargo for games against Mary and Northern Iowa. The team will then travel to Drake before the fi nal non-conference game against South Dakota. Summit League ac on begins with games at Oakland on Oct. 1 and IPFW on Oct. 3. Home game against Western Illinois on Oct. 8 and defending league tournament champion IUPUI on Oct. 10 follow. The Bison will then head back on the road to play UMKC on Oct. 14 and Southern Utah on Oct. 16. A non-conference match at Utah Valley will be played on Oct. 18. Bison win share of Summit League regular season crownBison win share of Summit League regular season crown It was a season of fi rsts for the North Dakota State soccer team. The Bison won their fi rst-ever Summit League regular season tle and earned a bid to the league tournament for the fi rst me. Junior Abbey Stra on and freshman Brooklyn Dyce became the only Bison to earn fi rst team all-league honors. The Bison tallied an overall record of 10-8-2, the program’s tenth 10-win season. NDSU fi nished 7-2 in Summit League play, sharing the regular season tle with South Dakota State and IUPUI. “I’m happy with our season,” said head coach Pete Cuadrado. “It’s a good step forward for us. The team matured a lot over the course of the season.” The Bison returned a strong and experienced team for the 2009 season, only losing one starter from the 2008 team. The team opened the season at the Ellig Sports Complex with a tough 2-1 over me loss to Drake, but bounced back on a trip to Waco to earn a double-over me 0-0 e with Baylor and a 2-1 win over La-mar. Sophomore goalie Kalani Bertsch earned Sum-mit League defensive player of the week honors a er recording 11 saves in the draw with Baylor. The Bison returned to Fargo where a second half goal by Morgan DeMike led the team to a 1-0 win over Creighton. A streak of fi ve straight road games followed. The Bison fell 4-0 at No. 19 Minnesota before drop-ping a tough 1-0 contest at Wisconsin. A er a 3-1 loss to Wisconsin-Green Bay, the Bison traveled to Boise, Idaho for the Soccer Etc/Nike Invita onal. The Bison ba led to a 1-1 double over me draw with host Boise State, then fell to Portland State 1-0. Stra on and Dyce earned all-tournament honors. Stra on

also was named the league’s co-defensive player of the week af-ter her performance in Boise. The team then came back to Fargo to play Mary in the fi nal non-conference game of the year. Dyce scored the fi rst two goals of her ca-reer to lead the Bison to a 2-0 win. “It was hard being on the road so much at the begin-ning of the season,” said Cuadrado. “It was a good challenge and gave us the expe-rience and tools we needed to do well in conference play.” NDSU kicked off Summit League play with a 2-1 over me win over Oral Rob-erts. Dyce scored the game-winner less than a minute into the fi rst over me pe-riod. The team was supposed to play Centenary that weekend as well, but the game was called off due to unplayable fi eld condi ons. The Bison then hosted IPFW and Oakland. Af-ter a back-and-forth fi rst half against the Mastodons, junior Candice D’Arcangeli struck the game-winner midway through the second half. The team won its fourth straight game against Oakland, defea ng the Grizzlies 2-1 thanks to early goals from Dyce and ju-nior Quin Ryan. IUPUI handed the Bison their fi rst loss in league play, winning 3-1 in Indianapolis. NDSU then reeled off three straight league wins over Western Illinois, Southern Utah and UMKC. Seniors Becky Iwanicki, Laura Murphy and Lorraine Thompson were honored for their contribu ons to Bison soccer prior to the UMKC game. With the 5-1 win over UMKC, the Bison punched their cket to the Summit League tourna-ment for the fi rst me in program history. With a chance to clinch the Summit League regular season tle on the line, the Bison traveled to Brookings for a clash with South Dakota State. De-spite two goals from Stra on, the Jackrabbits pulled off the 4-3 win. NDSU then traveled to Kansas City, Mo. to play Centenary in a game rescheduled from earlier in the season. Stra on again scored twice, leading the Bi-son to a 2-0 shutout win and a share of the Summit League regular season crown. “We’ve never accomplished that before,” said Cuadrado. “Winning the regular season sets a stan-

dard for us that we can compete and we have the ability to be a top team.” Joining NDSU in the league tournament were IUPUI, South Dakota State and Western Illinois. South Dakota State was the top seed, followed by No. 2 IUPUI and No. 3 NDSU. Western Illinois was the No. 4 seed. Despite holding a 21-8 advantage in shots, the Bison fell to IUPUI in the tournament semifi nals, 1-0. Murphy and Thompson were named to the all-tour-nament team. “We played fantas c against IUPUI. We did everything right, except score,” said Cuadrado. “It leaves the team hungry though and sets us up for a good off season. We’ll have a veteran team next year and it’s good that we got a taste of the tournament. I think our experience will pay off as we move for-ward.” Four Bison earned all-league honors. Strat-ton and Dyce were named to the fi rst team, while Thompson earned her second straight second team award. Ryan joined her on the second team. Dyce was also a member of the all-newcomer team. The Bison also excelled in the classroom. Iwan-icki was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America second team a er earning her third aca-demic all-district award. She is the fi h Academic All-America selec on for NDSU since making the transi on to Division I. Sophomore Megan Dean was a second team academic all-district selec on.

SUMMITLEAGUE

Now in its 29th year, The Summit League is in the midst of a renais-sance, both on the playing fi eld and in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, the League produced a na onal champion, 11 All-Ameri-cans, eight Academic All-Americans and 33 Academic All-District honor-ees. Originally formed in 1982 as the Associa on of Mid-Con nentUniversi es and later known as the Mid-Con nent Conference, The Sum-mit League is in its fourth year of a rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athle c per-formances of all league student-athletes. Included in the plan was the league’s new name, the crea on of a new image and the addi on of three member ins tu ons. The Summit League has a combined enrollment of over 125,000at 10 member ins tu ons: Centenary College of Louisiana, IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Pur-due University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts Universi-ty, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. In April 2009, the University of South Dakota accepted an invita- on to join the league with full membership beginning in 2011-12 and

currently serves as an associate member for swimming and diving. The League has one addi onal associate member in Eastern Illinois Univer-sity, which currently competes in swimming and diving and will join in men’s soccer in 2011. Centenary College will leave the league a er the 2010-11 season. These member ins tu ons pride themselves on providing quality athle c, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports, which include: base-ball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, so ball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and fi eld, men’s and women’s outdoor track and fi eld, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives automa c bids to the NCAA tournament in all applicable sports. Since its incep on in 1982, The Summit League has had several tran-scendent moments on the na onal stage. In 1986, Cleveland State up-set third-seeded Indiana in the fi rst round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on its way to a berth in the Sweet 16. A decade later, Val-

The Summit League

paraiso captured the na on’s a en on when Bryce Drew hit “the shot” to defeat No. 4 seed Mississippi in an NCAA fi rst-round game and spark its Sweet 16 run. More recently, Oral Roberts’ baseball program fi nished the 2004campaign with a na onal ranking and became the fi rst Summit League school to reach an NCAA Super Regional in 2006. Three years later, North Dakota State’s 2009 so ball team became the fi rst League member to win an NCAA regional and advance to the Super Regional round. Dur-ing the 2008-09 basketball season, South Dakota State’s women’s team was na onally-ranked throughout the year and capped its season with an NCAA Tournament fi rst round victory. The League has produced fi ve NCAA champions, four Olympic ath-letes and several All-Americans in the sports of track and fi eld, swimming and diving and cross country. Numerous professionals and several dra choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Ma-jor League Baseball fi rst round picks, a pair of NBA fi rst rounders and one WNBA selec on. Former Summit Leaguers Kevin Duckworth (NBA) and Kevin Seitzer (MLB) each were two- me all-stars during their professional careers. Recent and historical success coupled with an increased growthamong its membership base gives The Summit League a promisingfuture on the landscape of college athle cs.
