hEAD cOAch REx WALtERS A new era began April 7, 2008, when the Universi-ty of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball pro-gram. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running, and entering his fourth season on the Hilltop, excitement continues to build for what promises to be a memorable season. The Dons look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. After a dismal 4-9 start to the 2010-11 season, USF righted the ship in dramatic fashion and ripped off 11 victories in its last 15 games to close out the regular sea-son. The Dons posted a 10-4 slate in the challenging West Coast Conference – the program’s best league mark since 1982 – and were in contention for the team’s first WCC Regular Season Championship in nearly three decades on the final day. Highlights of the regular season included thrilling overtime triumphs against Colorado (83-81) and eventual WCC Champion Gonzaga (96-91). San Fran-cisco qualified for its first postseason tour-nament since 2004 and marched to the quarterfinals of the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Wil-liams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas, and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU com-bined to go 56-12 overall and won back-to-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (15), Drew (13), Riley (10), Gunner (8) and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008.

2011-12Wcc Standings

(As of 12/15/11)

ANGELO CALOIARO PROVIDES A BIG LIFT: Senior forward Angelo Caloiaro continues to make an impact for the Dons and the four-year starter scored a career-high 29 points with 11 rebounds in a 79-69 victory against Pacific (12/10/11) for his ninth career double-double. A two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Week selection, Caloiaro turned in the most-accurate season from beyond the arc in program history as a sophomore, connecting on a whopping .491 (55-112) from long distance. The Mitty product ranked fourth on the team in scoring (9.9) and led USF in rebounds (7.3) - good for third place among WCC leaders - as a junior. Caloiaro scored a season-high 26 points and eight rebounds in an 83-81 overtime win against Colorado (11/20/10) and scored 18 points with seven boards in a crucial road win at Portland (2/17/11). Caloiaro ranks fifth in career USF 3-pointers (147), The South Bay product posted his eighth double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds in an overtime win against San Jose State (11/16/11) and scored a season-high 22 points with four 3-pointers against New Mexico State (11/26/11).

GREEN LIGHT: Senior guard Rashad Green captured All-West Coast Conference First Team honors after playing a key role in USF’s resurgence during league play. The Manhattan transfer led the Dons in scoring during the WCC season with 13.6 points to go along with 5.5 rebounds. In USF’s 68-62 win against Santa Clara (2/5/11), Green scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Dons to the sweep of the Broncos and captured WCC Player of the Week honors in the process. Green scored a career-high 23 points with 10 rebounds in leading USF to a 76-59 win against Pepperdine in the WCC Tournament Quarterfinals (3/5/11). Green scored 21 points at Colorado State (11/29/09) and matched it with 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists at Pepperdine (1/29/11). The New Yorker scored 17 points against Hampton (12/30/10). Green lifted the Dons to a win in the second round of the CIT Tournament at Hawaii (3/19/11), with 22 points on 7-of-10 from the field with a career-high 15 rebounds. As a senior, Green ranks second on the team in scoring (12.1) and leads the Green and Gold in long distance accuracy at .393 (11-28). Green scored a season-high 23 points with four rebounds against Murray State (11/25/11).

MICHAEL WILLIAMS HEATS UP: Junior guard Michael Williams made a remarkable jump as a sophomore, and the sharpshooter captured All-West Coast Conference honors after leading the team in scoring at 14.7 points per game on .392 (74-189) from 3-point range, good for seventh place among West Coast Conference leaders. Williams turned in a big day in the Dons’ 50-48 overtime triumph against Montana (12/12/10), scoring 23 points with 13 rebounds in 42 minutes. Williams turned in a career-high 26 points in a 69-57 win against Hampton (12/30/10) and had 21 points vs. Gonzaga in the WCC Tournament Semifinals (3/6/11). Williams finished his sophomore campaign with 74 3-pointers, one shy of the single-season record held by Ali Thomas (1997-01), who drilled 75 in 1997-98. Williams enters the Saturday’s game vs. Menlo College ranked sixth on the Dons’ career 3-pointer list with 116.

THE KEYS TO USF’S SURGE: USF’s 2010-11 men’s basketball team will never be accused of using a fast start. In fact, the Dons carried a 4-9 record into its Hilltop Challenge game against Hampton December 30. From there, it was a significantly different story. These charts at right and below show the tale of the tape, measuring key statistical categories during the Dons 4-9 start compared to its 15-6 finish; USF’s non-conference slate against the 2011 West Coast Conference campaign; and finally, compares the 2009-10 season with 2010-11 regular season.

DONS REGISTER 10 WCC VICTORIES: USF shook off a rugged non-conference schedule and posted its best West Coast Conference season in a generation at 10-4. The Dons were in contention for the program’s first regular season league championship since 1981 on the final day of 2011 season. It was the 19th time USF has tallied at least 10 victories during WCC play since it joined the conference as a charter member for the 1953 season.Year WCC ........ SAN FRANCISCO’S EMERGENCE: USF men’s basketball continued to make strides during a remarkable 2010-11 season. In addition to advancing to the postseason for the first time since 2005 with the program’s inaugural berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, USF posted its highest overall win tally since the 1999-00 squad went 19-12. The Dons’s upswing is clear when comparing 2008-09 to 2010-11. From year one to year three, the Green and Gold is +7 in WCC victo-ries and +8 in overall wins.

NEWCOMERS READY TO ROCK THE HILLTOP: What a difference a year makes. Last season San Francisco entered the year with just seven years of returning Division I experience, six coming under the direction of head coach Rex Walters. This season, the Dons welcome back all five starters and 10 letter-winners from a squad that posted a 19-15 record and a 10-4 West Coast Conference slate. This year the Dons welcome three newcomers to the fold - freshmen guards Chris Adams (Covina, CA) and Gavin Hoffmann (Portland, OR), and freshman forward Mark Tollefsen (Danville, CA).

CARDIAC KIDS: USF can never be accused of being boring or even necessarily doing things the easy way. Last season, as they compiled their best West Coast Conference record (10-4) since 1982, the Dons trailed at halftime of a whopping 10 of their 14 league games. USF held just three intermission leads during league play - a 31-28 lead against Portland (1/20/11), a 31-17 advantage against San Diego (2/10/11) and a 35-30 edge at Portland (2/17/11). The Dons overcame a 35-24 halftime deficit at Santa Clara (1/8/11) and roared back from a 13-point, 39-26 shortfall against Pepperdine (2/24/11).

USF IN THE JESUIT BASKETBALL SPOTLIGHT: USF is proud of its rich Jesuit heritage and the Dons will compete in no fewer than eight games against fellow Jesuit schools during the 2011-12 season. San Francisco takes on Seattle U. Saturday, November 19 in the first Jesuit Spotlight game of the year. USF compiled a record of 6-3 against Jesuit foes during the 2010-11 campaign. San Francisco is taking part in the Jesuit Spotlight Project for the fourth-consecutive season, using Jesuit basketball to raise awareness of the outstanding education available at the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. Last season, Michael Williams and Rashad Green were named to the 2010-11 All-Jesuit Men’s Basketball All-American Team. For more information, log on to www.ajcunet.edu/jesuitbasketball.
