The recent economic turmoil has impacted us all - small busi-nesses, Fortune 500 companies, and non-profits alike. As our

local and national economies begin to show signs of recovery, we must continue to address the causes of this recession and work to-gether to ensure our citizens are better prepared to navigate a future economic crisis.

At Junior Achievement, we view these recent events as an opportu-nity to teach young people the basic life skills necessary to become self-sufficient, productive members of both our local community and our increasingly competitive global marketplace. Work readi-ness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship are not only the tenets of JA’s mission but, we believe, the tools that today’s students must hone to help rebuild our economy on a stronger foundation.

Fortunately, we are not alone. There is a renewed focus on eco-nomic and financial education which has sparked an urgent need to grow JA programming. With our educational and corporate part-ners, we are dedicated to addressing the demand for JA programs from teachers in our region. We are committed to our community and committed to teaching and inspiring our future leaders.

It is through events like the Greater Richmond Business Hall of Fame that we celebrate who we are and our core purpose to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. By honoring this distinguished group of individuals on May 19th we also honor the hard work and community values that we must encourage in Richmond’s next generation of business leaders. On behalf of the Junior Achievement of Central Virginia Board and Advisory Board of Directors we congratulate each laureate along with their families for creating a legacy of corporate success and community citizenship.

Past Laureates - The Greater Richmond Business Hall of Fame

It is my privilege to serve as chair-man of the 23rd Annual Greater

Richmond Business Hall of Fame, through which we recognize commu-nity leaders who have made a unique impact on our free enterprise system and on the metropolitan Richmond community as a whole. I ask that you join us as we recognize this year’s laureates, Jon and LaVerne King, Tom Snead and Ken Wright, and celebrate their many accomplishments.

The 2011 honorees are known as outstanding business leaders and entrepreneurs who, through their work, have made meaningful and lasting contributions to the quality of life in the Richmond region. They join a distinguished group of past laureates whose accomplish-ments have made an indelible impact on our community.

For over 40 years, Junior Achievement has been teaching young people in Richmond the values embodied by our honorees – as well as the economics of life. In the last year alone, JA of

Central Virginia served more than 20,000 students. Along with its community partners, JA is promoting self-sufficiency and preserving the spirit of free enterprise by providing students with the vital finan-cial literacy, entrepreneurial and work readiness education they need to succeed in business and in life.

Capital One shares Junior Achievement’s belief in the importance of teaching financial management and fiscal responsibility to our youth, especially during these tough economic times. For this reason, Capital One not only invests financially in JA programs, but our associates in the Commonwealth annually provide more than 5,000 volunteer hours to JA, including 3,500 hours here in Central Virginia.

On behalf of Junior Achievement, the board of directors, our volun-teers, and event sponsors, I am happy to extend congratulations to the 2011 Greater Richmond Business Hall of Fame Laureates. Please join us on May 19 as we honor our colleagues and celebrate their accomplishments.
