TO OUR COLLeGe OF ChARLeSTON COMMUNITY:

It is truly an exciting time to be involved with the College of Charleston. We continue to grow our reputation as a national university while staying true to our roots as a liberal arts and sciences college. our student demand is stronger than it has ever been in our 242-year history. We draw students from

all 50 states and 65 countries – students who compete internationally for scholarships, fellowships and other academic honors. our faculty and staff continue to nurture the student-focused culture for which the College is known.

our 10-year strategic plan will continue to guide us as we expand our academic portfolio, enhance our student-life programs and increase our presence in Charleston and the lowcountry.

We have our donors to thank for many of these successes. Your generosity provides the margin of excellence that is essential to our progress. In fact, philanthropic support to the College has risen for four consecutive years, despite the sluggish economy. total giving reached $10.1 million in 2011, representing an 8.3% increase over 2010. the College also raised more than $2.5 million through our 12 annual giving funds, an increase of nearly 18% over 2010. these results provide us with significant momentum as we prepare to launch our national comprehensive fundraising campaign.

over the past year, we held a series of campaign briefing events around the country to engage our stakeholders and to gather their input on our campaign goals. We also conducted a rigorous campus-wide process to identify and prioritize the funding needs within each of the College’s academic and administrative units. through these efforts, we identified four key areas of critical need that will help us achieve the envisioned future described in our strategic plan:

• We must significantly increase merit-based and need-based scholarships that will enable us to compete nationally and internationally for top students;

• We must recruit and retain distinguished faculty, endowed chairs and visiting scholars around whose expertise we will develop new academic programs and innovative research;

• We must modernize our facilities and upgrade our technology to meet the growing needs of our students, faculty and staff;

• We must develop distinctive academic programs and expand student services to better prepare our students for professional success in our global society.

I have already seen the transformative impact that your generosity has made all across our campus. With your continued support, I strongly believe that we will accomplish our campaign goals. thank you for investing in the bright and boundless future of the College of Charleston.   sincerely,

P. George Benson

President

“Your generosity provides the margin of excellence that is essential to our progress.

In fact, philanthropic support to the College has risen for four consecutive years, despite the sluggish economy.”

In 2011, donors made the College of Charleston a priority in a number of philanthropic ways. Once again, the College benefited from a year of generous giving from alumni, parents, friends, corporations and foundations that supported the College with annual, endowment, capital, programmatic and estate gifts. Thanks to your commitment, your vote of confidence and your generosity to the College, 2011 was a significant year of accomplishments.
