jaydenKRoHN Family – 105 NigHts The second smallest premature baby ever born at Doernbecher,

Jayden remained in the hospital for nearly five months after his birth. While the hospital healed Jayden, the Ronald McDonald House comforted his parents, Ian and Katelyn, who could be at his bedside within minutes.

Enter one of our Houses, and you’ll meet families of all kinds. They come from across the state and around the country, for a variety of medical reasons. We welcome them into a larger community which includes thousands who give generously of their time, talent, and treasure. Through your involvement and support, you are an integral part of that family.

This year’s Community Report attempts to capture many different facets of our life together. While it opens with images of some of the numerous children and families served by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington (RMHC), it also includes the faces of board and staff members, volunteers, and donors who comprise our growing extended family.

Ours is a family of compassion. We’re experts at providing comfort. Our embrace is both wonderful and awesome — especially when it comes at such a vulnerable time for the seriously ill children and their families who need that extra sense of concern.

Over the course of 2010, we hosted 755 guest families at our East House and another 729 at our West House. We lowered our eligibility radius to 30 miles in order to welcome guests from communities such as Woodburn, Sandy, and McMinnville. Our Outreach program funded oral health care for more than 13,000 children. And despite the trying economic circumstances, our fundraising efforts were remarkably successful — because of you!

Thank you for so generously supporting our children and families. Thank you for embracing family members you’ll never meet — and who won’t ever be able to personally tell you what that means. Thank you for being part of an extended family that will continue working to help children heal and keep children healthy for years to come.

ashton & johnmatHeW Family – 144 NigHts Families heal best when they have each other. While 17-year-old John is

undergoing treatment, his five-year-old brother, Ashton, and his mom have been with him at the Ronald McDonald House. When John’s stay was extended, his cousin Alex was also able to join them from Alaska.

Portland’s two Ronald McDonald Houses serve families who have to travel at least 30 miles

to receive medical treatment in Portland for a sick child. Each Ronald McDonald House has

lovingly decorated private guest rooms, a large communal kitchen, dining room, laundry room,

playrooms, and living areas. Weekly meal groups and volunteer activities bring vibrancy to the

Houses, while donations of food and clothing help families who have to travel at a moment’s

notice. Guests become part of a community made up of other families, staff, volunteers, and

countless friends whose presence is felt every day.

House also holds RMHC’s administrative offices. Built

in 1997, the House was expanded in 2005 to host

24 families.

West House Located just steps away from Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, and Shriners Hospital for Children, the West House opened in 1984 and can host 17 families.

viRgiNia gaRCia memoRial HealtH CeNteR RMHC supported the oral health program at the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center for the sixth consecutive year, awarding a grant for $20,000 in 2010. each week for seven months so that 13-year-old Marcos could receive specialized treatment. On every trip, brothers Eli (4) and Ruben (6) came with Marcos, their sister Isabelle, and mom Reyna, to stay at the Ronald McDonald House.

Hearts & Hands auction september 24, 2010Nearly 400 friends of RMHC attended a “Storybook Evening” at the Portland Art Museum, bidding, dining and dancing the night away — all while raising nearly $330,000.

Ronald McDonald House not knowing how long they would need to stay. By the end of the week, after a successful procedure, they received the good news that they could take Kingston home.
