A LETTER FROM GEORGE WILKES

Dear Friends:

United Way of Central Minnesota works everyday to make a meaningful, measurable difference in the lives of individuals and families in our community In this newly designed annual report, you will learn about the work undertaken during fiscal year 2010 (July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011) We engaged in several community conversations and discussion

to lay the foundation for our future strategic direction As a result, ten year goals are being established by our Board of Directors As these goals are developed, we will invite input on our 10 year goals and share the results

Thanks for the exceptional generosity and support of donors and the outstanding commitment of partners, thousands of central Minnesotans benefited from United Way’s work in helping children and youth achieve their potential, promoting financial stability, and connecting and engaging all sectors of the community in volunteerism.

Here are just a few examples of activities we accomplished in 2010-11:• Enrolled 11,633 children in Imagination Library • Collaborated with several community partners

including Catholic Charities, Tri-CAP, Lutheran Social Services and others to train 64 individuals as financial coaches in September 2010. Over 300 individuals have been reached with financial coaching and classes at free tax sites, through the Stearns-Benton Workforce Center, and offered in partnership with SCSU students.

• Contracted services for the United Way 2-1-1 Call Center in May 2011 for greater efficiency and maintain staffing to update the local resources Over 7,000 people contacted 2-1-1 for resource information and referrals

• Engaged 5,634 community volunteers in a variety of community events including Cards of EnCOURAGEment, Project Homeless Connect, Llama Llama Read-A-Rama, a community baby shower, and the largest collaborative effort “Give It, Get It Volunteer Days”, a 3 day community wide event in October hosting 98 projects with 4,646 registered volunteers 17,422 hours donated at the Independent Sector valuation of $20 85 per volunteer hour equals $363,238 of volunteer time

• Relocated our United Way office to 3001 Clearwater Road, St Cloud in July saved 17% annually on lease obligation

Noreen J DunnellsPresident and CEO

I have had the privilege of serving as the Board chair for United Way of Central Minnesota in the past year as well as this current year The trust and respect that United Way garners in our community is admirable and is more relevant than ever with increased demands for services and reductions in government funding

As United Way has always done in its 44 years of providing support to central

Minnesotans, we stepped up to the challenge by thinking differently, reducing internal expenses and ensuring that community funds are wisely invested

United Way believes that everyone has a role in building a better future for all Through LIVE UNITED we invite all central Minnesotans to help us shape community-wide change You’ll see in this report that our community partners have responded by Giving, Advocating and Volunteering

On behalf of United Way of Central Minnesota, thank YOU for your continued commitment and support!

Jerry's Story 6

JERRY'S STORY

“Character is like a key, the better it is the more doors you can open ” This is the motto created by Jerry Akubue This once self-described “shy kid in the corner” is now a confident young man who is comfortable in his own skin With the help and support of the Boys and Girls Club he has learned his potential is endless

After suffering a great loss in his family, Jerry and his siblings were introduced to the Boys and Girls Club through a close family friend When he first joined the Club he described himself as very shy and quiet

To develop and grow he knew he couldn’t sit at home and feel sorry for himself, so Jerry chose to pick himself up and think of how he could make his parents proud With support from the Club and strong self-determination, Jerry broke out of his shell, started interacting with others, and decided to try new activities

Jerry now tries to be what he calls a “yes man ” Saying yes to things presents opportunity he might not have had The simple solution of “yes” has pushed Jerry to accomplish and participate in many things with the Boys and Girls Club By exploring different activities he has built his skill and grown more than he could ever imagine

One program he was involved with at the Club was Career Launch Here members can learn what it takes to have a profession They work on responsibility, resume writing, and discover other useful tips to joining the workforce From that program he was able

to become a Jr Staff member at the Club and see what it takes to be a leader and have responsibility

Building his confidence by trying and succeeding in new things, Jerry also developed a passion for performing He joined the Tech High School Speech Team When he first started he said he would shake and was nervous to speak, but with his new confidence he slowly got better and better He went from the nervous shy kid, to receiving second place at the 2011 Minnesota State High School Speech Tournament

There is no doubt Jerry has done a lot already and has an unforeseeable future of great things to come Perhaps one of the greatest things the club has done for Jerry is let him find himself, and with that the possibilities are endless “I needed to make my own path that would allow me to shape myself, from that I can succeed,” he said

Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota is a United Way program partner.

Meet Jerry, a 15-year-old boy who credits his confidence and character to Boys and Girls Club, a United Way program partner.

11 Granite Society

GRANITE SOCIETYEvery year, the outpouring of compassion and generosity from thousands of people confirms a belief in United Way and the future of our community Some donors have gone a step further by arranging a planned gift to United Way

United Way of Central Minnesota friends who make a planned gift will be recognized as a member of the United Way Granite Society Just as granite has provided a solid foundation for Central Minnesota, Granite Society members will continue to provide a solid foundation for our community for generations to come

For more information on how making a planned gift could benefit you and the community, please call United Way of Central Minnesota’s Leadership and Planned Gifts department, 320-252-0227

“Our family has been fortunate in many ways We have benefited from community “help” – although many may not look at it that way We’ve had the advantage of good neighborhoods, schools, family support and community strength And we wanted to continue that legacy So we’ve included United Way as beneficiaries in our estate planning, along with our children, our grandchildren and other charities United Way assures our gift can do the most good for the needs of our communities ”

Loyal Contributor 12

LOYAL CONTRIBUTOR

Inspired by their upbringing to share and desire to contribute to their community, it is only natural Jim and Pauline Hall helped to establish what is now known as United Way of Central Minnesota It started when the Halls came together with their peers in

1967 and addressed the need for a single place where people could contribute to their community Closely working with one another they developed what was then known as the “United Fund: St Cloud Area ” Fast forward 40 years and the Halls have continued to strive for a better community

It’s the initiative of people like the Halls and their peers, who took action to start United Way of Central Minnesota and their benevolence that aided

in our community’s growth As Loyal Contributors they have been giving for four decades

Part of their reason for the longevity of support and giving to United Way is its ability to foster the needs of the multiple organizations present in Central Minnesota “It is nice to have a central place to give to, but know that many places are taken into consideration and will be helped from one contribution,” Jim said Also for the Halls, an emphasis on community and taking care of one another is imperative “We are members of the community and in business with it as well, so we feel it is important to give back,” Pauline explained Stressing the significance of community and the value of taking care of one another, the Halls embody the mission of improving people’s lives by mobilizing the caring power of Central Minnesota Their years of loyal contributions have made a difference in the community, and the persistence of such people, is what continues to characterize the heart of United Way of Central Minnesota

The United Way Loyal Contributor program is a special recognition society for individuals and couples who have been donating to United Way - in any community, at any amount - for 10 years or more

If you have been investing in United Way for 10 years or more, please remember to indicate that you are a Loyal Contributor on your pledge card this year We would love to recognize you for your generous support

Loyal Contributors are marked with a “♦” throughout this booklet.

SUCCESS BY 6 AND IMAGINATION LIBRARY CONTRIBUTIONS

Success By 6 (SB6) is a collaboration to build community support for children during the formative years that influence their entire lives - from birth to age six By bringing all aspects of our community together, we can address the needs of young children and their families so that all children are prepared for success in school and in life

United Way's Success By 6 believes effective parenting can be learned and every child has potential A strong

community builds upon the assets, strengths and capabilities of children and their families But all of us need to take responsibility

Success By 6 would not be possible without grants, local corporations and individuals supporting the program year-round!

Imagination Library is a program of the United Way of Central Minnesota Success By 6 initiative and offered in partnership with the Dollywood Foundation Parents with children, from birth to their fifth birthday, who live in the UWCM service area, are eligible to sign up for Imagination Library Each month children enrolled in the program receive a free, age appropriate book in the mail The program is offered to families at no cost

Imagination Library is partially funded locally by individual donations from parents, community members, organizations and special grants Last year 11,633 children received books through the program A child can be sponsored for $30 per year
