Charles H. Wickenberg Jr. was a pioneer whose work as a journalist and a citizen made Columbia and South Carolina a better place. “Wick,” as he was known to colleagues, was chairman of the S.C. Press Association Legislative Aff airs Committee in 1972 and as such helped father South Carolina’s Freedom of Information Act.
Mr. Wickenberg began his news career as a correspondent for United Press International in 1947, serving in Columbia, Raleigh, Memphis and Minneapolis. He joined the News & Courier in Charleston as a political reporter in 1949.
He was Th e Charlotte Observer’s S.C. bureau chief from 1958 to 1962, when he became Th e State’s fi rst governmental aff airs editor and led the newspaper’s early analysis of nuclear energy and waste in South Carolina.
Mr. Wickenberg was executive news editor of Th e State and Th e Columbia Record from 1963 to 1971, when he was named public aff airs editor of Th e State. He became the newspaper’s associate editor in 1972 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1987.
He served his nation as a Marine in World War II and Korea, his state as executive secretary to Gov. George Bell Timmerman and his community as president of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce.
He traveled to Vietnam with Ross Perot in 1970 in an eff ort to free American POWs, and
later won awards for his reporting on Vietnam prisoners of war. Mr. Wickenberg was a Pulitzer Prize Jurist in 1975 and was an adjunct journalism professor at the University of South Carolina. He also held the Order of the Palmetto.
Mr. Wickenberg was, in the words of former State executive editor and editorial page editor Tom McLean, “a newspaperman from a time when journalists were expected to be an integral part of their community, not to stand apart from it.” Mr. McLean noted that while there are pluses and minuses in this approach to journalism, Charles Wickenberg’s life overall “gives testament to an overwhelmingly positive body of work.”

William Gilmore Simms was a South Carolina journalist whose work as a writer and editor on four historically signifi cant 19th century newspapers was matched by his fame as a poet, historian, novelist and short-story writer. Ranked by some critics as second only to Edgar Allen Poe among Southern writers in the period before the Civil War, he has been referred to as the Southern version of James Fenimore Cooper. By the mid-1840s, Simms’s novels were so popular that Poe called Simms “the best novelist which this country has, on the whole, produced” and “immeasurably the greatest writer of fi ction in America.” When he died on June 11, 1870, his obituary in Harper’s Weekly said, “Th e country has lost one more of its time-honored band of authors, and the South the most consistent and devoted of her literary sons.” A native of Charleston who studied to be a lawyer, Simms was publisher and editor of the Charleston City Gazette and had written six books by age 26. His most signifi cant contribution to South Carolina journalism came during the Civil War. As associate editor of the Daily South Carolinian, Simms was one of the few remaining journalists in Columbia when Sherman’s troops burned the city in February 1865. In the aft ermath, he helped establish Th e Phoenix, the fi rst newspaper to rise from the ashes of the devastation. As editor, he wrote the defi nitive account of the burning of Columbia along with a list of owners and occupants of the buildings and houses that had been destroyed. Simms’ lengthy and detailed description of “Th e Capture, Sack and Destruction of the City of Columbia” was published over a period of three weeks beginning on March 21, 1865, the fi rst day the newspaper was published. Simms revised the newspaper articles and published the series as a small paperback in October 1865. Aft er the war ended, Simms resumed work on the Daily South Carolinian,
which had been moved to Charleston. However, when the newspaper was moved back to Columbia, he began writing for the Charleston Courier, which was his last newspaper job before he died. Simms was one of the best, and most respected, historians of his day. His History of South Carolina served for several generations as the standard school textbook on the state’s history. He died at his home in Charleston on June 11, 1870, and is buried in Magnolia Cemetery. Although his novels are, for the most part, out of print, numerous symposia and conferences are organized by the Simms society to provide a forum for scholars and historians to study and present papers on Simms, who is still known among literary scholars as a major force in antebellum literature.

For more than thirty-five years, the South Carolina Press Association has reviewed applicants for its Hall of Fame. A total of 64 journalists have been selected for inclusion on the basis of their significant contributions to their craft and communities.
The Hall of Fame was started in 1972, when SCPA President William L. Kinney Jr., of Bennettsville, acting on a suggestion from Secretary-Manager Reid H. Montgomery, set in motion activities that led to the establishment of a South Carolina Press Association Hall of Fame.
Kinney obtained the approval of the SCPA Executive Committee and later the full membership, by a mail ballot. He wanted to make the first presentations at the 1973 Winter Meeting in Columbia.
At that time, 21 other states had halls of “fame” or “honor.” The reason for the latter designation in a few states was to avoid confusion with halls of fame for athletes.
John A. Montgomery, then-editor of The Columbia Record, was named by Kinney as chairman of the first SCPA Hall of Fame Committee. Serving with him were Don Bruner of Lexington, William Chalk of Camden, Hubert Osteen Jr. of Sumter, and Dean Livingston of Orangeburg.
The 2010-2011 Hall of Fame Committee members included: John Heath, retired from Beaufort Gazette; Tom McLean, retired from The State; Pat McNeely, retired from the University of South Carolina's School of Journalism and Louis Sossamon, retired from The Gaffney Ledger.
