The AACE Annual Meeting not only has an outstanding program scheduled for attendees, but also includes events for the family such as a reception, three educational breakfasts, and a scheduled tour during the meeting.

The Clinical Congress Program officially begins on Thursday, April 14; however, satellite programs begin at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 13. Also on Wednesday are the following ½ day programs: Advanced Diabetes Update: Giving Endocrinologists the Latest Tools to Lead Their Communities, the AACE Maintenance of Certification Learning Session and Practice Management 101 (this course is open to Fellows-in-training only). Additional information on each course can be found throughout this program. Attendees are encouraged to come early to participate in these exciting educational activities. Note that attendee registration will open at 9:00 am on Wednesday, April 13. All meetings and programs will be completed by 11:15 am Sunday, April 17.

The Twentieth Annual Meeting of AACE is structured to provide relevant clinical information for the practicing endocrinologist. The program will focus on information that will allow you to achieve the best solutions for the diagnosis and management of endocrine disease. Pertinent scientific, clinical practice and patient management information will be disseminated via general sessions, workshops, meet the experts and satellite symposia. This material will update the endocrinologist in not only common and uncommon endocrine disorders, but also newer modalities, which aid in effective practice management, and in assessing the impact of managed care in the field of endocrinology.

All AACE member registered attendees are invited to attend the Annual Business Meeting Luncheon, which will be held Saturday, April 16, 12:25-1:45 pm. The Business Meeting Luncheon will include the announcement of the 2011 election results, installation of Yehuda Handelsman, MD, FACP, FACE, as AACE President, relevant committee reports, and other business to come before the membership. The Business Luncheon will be at the convention center in Ballroom 20 AB. There is no additional charge for this event; however, tickets are required to guarantee seating. Keynote SpeakerThe Keynote Speaker for the AACE 2011 Annual Meeting will be Eric Topol, MD -a noted American cardiologist, geneticist and innovator. He is the Director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute in La Jolla, California, which is a National Institutes of Health funded flagship grant, to accelerate research to change medicine. He also serves as the Chief Academic Officer for Scripps Health, a Professor of Translational Genomics at The Scripps Research Institute, and was recently named The Gary and Mary West Chair of Innovative Medicine. In addition, he is a Co-Founder and serves on the Board of the West Wireless Health Institute as Vice-Chairman. Dr. Topol will be delivering a presentation entitled, “How Genomics Will Drive Diabetes Prevention and Management” during the keynote general session on Friday, April 15 from 10:45-11:30 am.

academy of clinical Thyroidologists (acT) Semi-annual meetingFounded in 2005, the Academy of Clinical Thyroidologists (ACT) is a professional society of international members who specialize in clinical thyroidology. The mission of ACT is to promote communication, collegiality, education and facilitation for physicians who are actively engaged or desire to become engaged in the clinical practice of thyroidology, either as a full time activity or as a major component of their professional career. ACT encourages clinical expertise through a single field approach to endocrine practice. Its members practice 50% -100% clinical thyroidology. AACE-ABIM Maintenance of Certification Learning SessionWEDNESDAy, APRIL 13 7:00 AM - 12:00 PM (RooM 26 IN THE CoNVENTIoN CENTER)

AACE will once again be hosting a Maintenance of Certification (MoC) Learning Session in conjunction with the Annual Meeting. The Learning Session will feature two American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) medical knowledge modules- Endocrinology, Update 2010 & 2011. The primary purpose of the Learning Session is to facilitate completion of ABIM medical knowledge modules in order for attendees to receive Maintenance of Certification credit from ABiM. The session is conducted in an interactive group setting and is led by ABiM-certified physicians.

Participants who are enrolled in ABiM’s Maintenance of Certification program can order a copy of the Endocrinology, Update 2010 & 2011 modules from ABIM’s website at www.abim.org, and transfer and submit the answers discussed during the Learning Session to ABIM for scoring. Those who complete the modules successfully will receive 20 points (10 per module) toward ABiM’s Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge requirement for Maintenance of Certification. For additional information about the ABiM Maintenance of Certification program requirements and enrollment, please visit their website, at www.abim.org.

aace outstanding clinical endocrinologist awardCharles Kilo, MD, FACP, FACE, will be presented the AACE Outstanding Clinical Endocrinologist Award. Dr. Kilo is Professor of Clinical Medicine, Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine and was an endocrinologist in private practice. He is Chairman of the Kilo Diabetes and Vascular Disease Research Foundation. In 1972, Dr. Kilo and Dr. Joseph Williamson, Professor of Pathology, founded the Kilo Diabetes and Vascular Disease Research Foundation to raise money to support a research laboratory, education programs, and patient care at Washington University. Research at the Kilo Laboratory has contributed significantly to the understanding of how diabetes affects the body organs and to the development of medications and treatments that prevent microvascular, macrovascular and neurological complications. Drs. Kilo and Williamson were among the first to show that high levels of blood sugars were primarily responsible for the complications of diabetes and that control of blood sugar levels, high blood pressure and blood fats through diet, exercise and medications could delay or prevent complications.

H. Jack baskin, mD, endocrine Teaching awardLewis E. Braverman, MD, FACE, will be presented the H. Jack Baskin, MD, Endocrine Teaching Award. Dr. Braverman is currently a Professor of Medicine in the Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition within the Department of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center in Boston, MA. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, and received his MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD. Dr. Braverman also received an Honorary Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Parma, Parma, Italy. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency and an Endocrinology Fellowship under the direction of the late Sidney H. Ingbar, MD, on the II-IV Medical Services (Harvard) and Thorndike Memorial Laboratory (Harvard), Boston City

Hospital. Dr. Braverman has been the recipient of many National and International Awards, including those from the American Thyroid Association, The Endocrine Society, The German Endocrine Society, The Technion University School of Medicine (Haifa, Israel), the Thai American Physicians Foundation and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE).

outstanding Service award for the promotion of endocrine Health of an underserved populationAthena Philis-Tsimikas, MD, will be presented the Outstanding Service Award for the Promotion of Endocrine Health of an Underserved Population. Dr. Philis-Tsimikas was named Corporate Vice President for the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute, La Jolla, CA, in May of 2008 after the integration of the institute with their parent corporation, Scripps Health. Prior to that time, she led the institute and subsidiary corporation, The Whittier Institute for Diabetes, as the Executive Director and Chief Medical Officer since 2004. Dr. Philis-Tsimikas served as a clinical endocrinologist on the staff of the Scripps Clinic Medical Group for seven years in the Division of Diabetes and Endocrinology from 1994 to 2001. She has also served as an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego for the past 16 years in the Division of Endocrinology/Diabetes and Metabolism. In 1997, she assisted in establishing the community wide, nationally recognized diabetes program, Project Dulce as its founding medical director.

Dr. Caballero is the Director of the Latino Diabetes Initiative, Director of Medical Affairs of Professional Education, Staff Endocrinologist and Clinical Investigator at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, MA. He is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Caballero developed the Joslin Latino Diabetes Initiative that was launched in the summer of 2002.

master of the american college of endocrinology (mace)Carlos R. Hamilton, Jr., MD, FACP, FACE, will be presented the Master of the American College of Endocrinology (MACE). Dr. Hamilton is Special Advisor to the President and Professor of Medicine at The University of Texas Health ScienceCenter–Houstonwherehehasanactivepracticeof clinical endocrinology. He is the fourth generation of Texas physicians and his son, an interventional radiologist is the fifth. He has one daughter, an attorney and wife of the Texas Lt. Governor. He and his wife Carolyn Burton Hamilton of 49 years have four granddaughters. In 2000, Dr. Hamilton assumed his present faculty position at The University of TexasHealthScienceCenter–Houston.Hehasserved ina number of leadership capacities in his county and state medical associations and in the American Society of Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians. He has served AACE and the American College of Endocrinology in a number of assignments, including President of both organizations.

Distinction in clinical endocrinology awardSteven V. Edelman, MD, will be presented the Distinction in Clinical Endocrinology Award. Dr. Edelman is a professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System of San Diego and the director of the Diabetes Care Clinic, VA Medical Center. He achieved high honors during his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Los Angeles and was the valedictorian of his medical school class at the University of California Davis Medical School. Dr. Edelman received his internal medicine training at the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed his endocrinology fellowship training at the Joslin and Lahey Clinics in Boston, MA, as well as a research fellowship at UCSD. Dr. Edelman has strong interests in education and patient advocacy. He is the founder and director of Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD), a not-for-profit organization with the goal of teaching and motivating patients in diabetes self-care. Since 1995, TCOYD has reached hundreds of thousands of people living with diabetes through a variety of education portals, including national conferences, publications, television, and community programs.

This is a comprehensive effort that integrates culturally oriented activities in the areas of patient care and education, community outreach, research and professional education. This initiative has received local, regional, national and international recognition. Through his work, Dr. Caballero is committed to identifying effective culturally oriented and community based strategies that may contribute to the elimination of health care disparities. His research interests include type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention, as well as diabetes in racial/ethnic minorities. He is a co-investigator of the National Diabetes Prevention Program, the LookAhead Program and the Diabetes Education Study, all sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

Frontiers in Science awardRobert R. Henry, MD, will be presented the Frontiers in Science Award. Dr. Henry is Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. He is also Chief of the Section of

Endocrinology, Metabolism & Diabetes, and Director of the Center for Metabolic Research at the VA Medical Center in San Diego. Dr. Henry is currently President, Medicine and Science of the American Diabetes Association, and is a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, American Federation for Medical Research, European Association for the Study of Diabetes, The Endocrine Society, The Obesity Society, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and The Royal College of Edinburgh. Over the past 25 years he has received more than 60 diabetes-related grants and awards, including those fundedby theNational InstitutesofHealth–NIDDK, American Diabetes Association, The Department of Veterans Affairs and numerous pharmaceutical grants. As a researcher, Dr. Henry has primarily focused on exploring insulin resistance in cellular systems, animal models, and in people with diabetes.

Yank D. coble, Jr., mD, Distinguished Service awardStephen F. Hodgson, MD, FACP, MACE, will receive the Yank D. Coble, Jr., MD, Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Hodgson retired in 2010 as a Professor of Medicine and Consultant in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Mayo Clinic and Mayo College of Medicine. His career was primarily devoted to the practice of endocrinology specializing in bone and mineral disorders. Dr. Hodgson was involved in basic and clinical bone and mineral research, and was head of the Mayo Bone and Mineral Core Group for several years. He was founder and head of the Mayo Bone Histomorphometry Laboratory, which supports research, educational and clinical activities. Dr. Hodgson recently (2008) published an electronic educational course in bone microanatomy and histology for Endocrine University®, supported by a grant from the American College of Endocrinology. He was a member of the steering committee that founded the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American College of Endocrinology, and was privileged to serve on the Board of Directors for many years and as President of both organizations.

master of the american college of endocrinology (mace)Steven M. Petak, MD, JD, FACE, FCLM, will be presented the Master of American College of Endocrinology. Dr. Petak has been an associate at the Texas Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Endocrinology since 1989 and is also the Director of the Bone Densitometry Unit and Osteoporosis Center with the Institute. He is on the clinical faculty at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and serves as bone densitometry and endocrine consultant to NASA at the Johnson Space Center. On a national level, Dr. Petak has been a charter member of AACE and served as President of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (2006-2007) and President of the American College of Endocrinology (2009-2010). He has also served as President of the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (2006-2007) and received the ISCD clinician of the year award in 2003. Dr. Petak has chaired and served on a long list of committees of these organizations. He co-chaired the Physician Consortium Osteoporosis Guidelines Committee, served on the Osteoporosis Technical Advisory Panel of the Joint Commission, and has been involved in a long list of national initiatives involving osteoporosis and bone health.

international clinician awardAugusto D. Litonjua, MD, FPCP, FPSEM, FACE, will be presented the International Clinician Award. Dr. Litonjua is Emeritus Professor of the College of Medicine, University of the Philippines (UP). He retired as Professor and Chairman of Physiology and Clinical Professor of Medicine and Chief of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine in 1986. Dr. Litonjua now devotes his time to the clinical practice of endocrinology in three hospitals - Makati Medical Center, Asian Hospital and Medical Center, and Manila Doctors Hospital. He was Chairman of Medicine and Chief of Endocrinology in the first two Hospitals. Dr. Litonjua also attends to the running of the foundation he set up–DiabetesCenterPhilippines,whichconductsactivitiestocreate awareness for diabetes countrywide, trains diabetes educators from different hospitals in the country (now more than 60 such centers), and runs the camp for type 1 diabetics yearly. He founded the Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and later, urged one of his former fellows, Dr. George Tan, to organize the Philippine Chapter of AACE, where he also serves as its President Emeritus and Adviser.

attendance policyAttendance at the AACE Annual Meeting is open to AACE physician members and nonmembers (MD and DO) and allied health professionals (AHP), including PharmDs, PhDs, endocrine nurses, diabetic educators, dietitians, etc. There is a one-time registration fee and a daily registration fee for the AACE Annual Meeting, please see the appropriate registration form in the back of this program for full details. Please note, there are separate registration forms for physicians (MD and DO) and allied health professionals (AHP).

Spouses or guests of attendees are allowed to attend scientific sessions only if space is available, but are not permitted to attend luncheons. They are invited to attend the Spouse/Guest Breakfasts and the ACE Convocation. Spouses and guests are also welcome to attend the President’s Gala Cocktail Buffet; however, tickets are required and must be purchased in advance. Please see section D of the registration form to purchase tickets.

Pharmaceutical representatives whose companies are represented in the Exhibit Hall cannot officially register for a session but can attend if space is available. Product materials cannot be displayed in meeting rooms, and distribution of product information during meetings is strictly prohibited.

cancellations/refunds/no ShowsCancellations must be received in writing in the AACE office prior to March 16, 2011, in order to receive a full refund. Cancellations received March 16 -March 23 will be refunded less a $50 processing fee. Cancellations received after March 23 will not be refunded as material for each meeting registrant has already been prepared and packed for San Diego at that time. No refunds will be issued for no-shows except in the case of extreme extenuating circumstances. workshop and meet the expert registrationAn excellent variety of Workshop and Meet the Expert (MTE) topics are offered on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Please see the registration form for complete listings.

All Workshops and MTEs run concurrently during each time slot so it is only possible to register for one during each session. Be sure to indicate your top choice for each session on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Registration for each Workshop and MTE is limited. While tickets are not issued for these sessions, seating is first come, first served, so advance registration is imperative to ensure that appropriate meeting space is selected to accommodate attendees. Additionally, city codes and fire regulations restrict the maximum occupancy in each session room. Your advance registration for these sessions is greatly appreciated to assist in meeting these important planning needs.

Satellite Symposia registrationAdvance registration is required for the scheduled satellite symposia. As with the Workshops and MTE sessions, this is necessary to ensure that appropriate meeting space and materials are provided to accommodate each symposium. Tickets will not be issued and seating will be provided on a first come, first served basis. Satellite symposia registration will open shortly and notification will be sent to all registered attendees. All individuals who have already registered for the Annual Meeting will be able to log on to am.aace.com to

add their satellite symposia selections to their existing meeting registration. Additionally, all AACE members will be sent individual brochures for each satellite symposium with specific session information, faculty listing and credit designation. All brochures will also include information on how to add that satellite symposium to an existing Annual Meeting registration.

advance registration for meal FunctionsAACE must provide a guaranteed number of people for each meal function in advance and is required to pay for that number. AACE only guarantees for the number of people who specifically register for each meal in advance. In section D of enclosed registration form, please indicate each food function you will attend, as it may not be possible to register (due to seating and food limitations) for the function when you arrive at the meeting. Tickets will be required for these events. If you have a special request, kosher or vegetarian meal, please indicate this on the registration form. AACE will make every effort to fulfill your dietary request. However, we cannot guarantee your request will be available at all times. Please note the functions that are not open to spouses or guests.

college Fellow candidates materialMaterial and instructions for College Fellow Candidates being inducted at the Convocation on Saturday evening will be distributed at the AACE Registration Desk beginning at 9:00 am on Wednesday, April 13. Approved applicants for Fellowship will receive detailed information in a separate mailing.
