Migration and Human Capital

Ed by Jacques Poot, Brigitte Waldorf and Leo van Wissen

For millennia humans have been willing to travel large distances in search of a better life for themselves and their descendents. Two major features set the current global migration wave apart from earlier ones. The first is the growth in repeat, return, temporary and seasonal migration for study, work or in retirement, encouraged by cheap travel and communication. The second is that global economic transformation brings with it a global demand for talent that is the lifeblood of the knowledge economy. Ageing societies and fast growing developing countries require the widening and deepening of their human capital that may only be met with a continuing influx of migrants. Throughout the world, migration is an increasingly important and diverse component of population change, both at national and sub-national levels. Migration impacts on the distribution of knowledge and generates externalities and spillover effects. The book ‘Migration and Human Capital’ focuses on recent models and methods for analyzing and forecasting migration, as well as on the basic trends, driving factors and institutional settings behind migration processes. The book also looks at many current policy issues regarding migration, such as the creative class in metropolitan areas, the brain drain, regional diversity, population ageing, illegal immigration, ethnic networks and immigrant assimilation. With special reference to Europe and North America, the book reviews and applies models of internal migration; analyses the spatial concentration of human capital; considers migration in a family context; and addresses the political economy of international migration. The book had its genesis in the August 2005 conference of the European Regional Science Association held in Amsterdam.Cheltenham, UK, Edward Elgar, 2008.
