A Water Quality Workshop for Teachers From H-2-O Dates: July 21-23, 2010 (back-up dates: TBA) Location: LUMCON - DeFelice Marine Center, Cocodrie, Louisiana Cost: FREE Application Deadline: June 15, 2010 Number of Participants: 20 Teachers Contact: Murt Conover (985) 851-2860 [email protected] About the Workshop From H-2-O is a dynamic training workshop that allows teachers to work with educators, scientists, and mentors to build a community of partners that are incorporating water sampling into their science curriculum using Bayouside Classroom (www.lumcon. edu/bayousideclassroom). Become a Bayouside Classroom teacher and give your students hands-on scientific experience in the environment while helping to monitor Louisiana water quality. The focus of this unique workshop is on water quality and how you can use regular sampling to help you students understand their place in the estuary or watershed, and what types of water quality exist in estuaries and watersheds. Every workshop participant will obtain the equipment and knowledge to use Bayouside Classroom to educate students about some of coastal Louisiana’s environmental concerns. Teachers who attend this workshop will be asked to regularly add data collected from their sites to the Bayouside Classroom database. Participation in this workshop means you can then work with LUMCON’s Bayouside Classroom program. Who Can Apply Any Louisiana middle school or high school science teacher is welcome to apply. Teachers who have been fully trained to use Bayouside Classroom are encouraged to apply to be a mentor. If you are applying for the first time, please make sure that your school administrator is aware that participation in this program requires students to collect water samples during class time.

Notes about the Workshop Workshop topics cover all “Science as Inquiry” GLEs. Teachers who have had Bayouside Classroom training in the past are eligible to attend as

mentors. Teachers will receive hands-on training how to use all of the Bayouside Classroom

equipment. Teachers will get training in how to use the Bayouside Classroom website and database. All participants receive free lodging and meals during the workshop. Teachers will learn about educational resources available to help teach students about the

environment and promote environmental stewardship. Please keep both weekends open in the event we need to reschedule the workshop.

Workshop Highlights Teachers who attend this workshop will receive a Bayouside Classroom kit containing

1 Dissolved Oxygen titration test kit, 1 salinity refractometer, 1 armored thermometer, 1 pH meter, 1 water clarity tube, 1 sampling bucket, 1 clipboard safety gear (goggles, gloves, waste bottle, rinse bottle), and much more! Hands-on estuary scientific investigation using Bayouside Classroom sampling and database. Research cruise aboard the R/V Acadiana. Connections betweem water quality science and stewardship. Networking opportunity with science and environmental education professionals.
