The Toronto Blues Society celebrates its 25th anniversary with a blues happening at the Gladstone Hotel

The Toronto Blues Society will be celebrating its 25th anniversary with an exciting line-up of Shakura S’Aida, Fathead, The 24th Street Wailers, and Harrison Kennedy; as well as live blues painting in the Ballroom by Mark Smith, campfire/open mike by Brian Blain in the Art Bar, two blues photo exhibits, blues poetry and blues movies on Friday May 28 at the Gladstone Hotel.

The Ballroom will feature Shakura S’Aida, Fathead, The 24th Street Wailers, and a live painting beginning at 9pm. Shakura S’Aida has enriched the blues community with her soulful voice, enthusiastic personality and commitment to music as an art form. It has been a long but steady climb since Fathead's debut CD in 1995, and the band has been tearing it up on the North American festival circuit ever since. The 24th Street Wailers are twenty-something blues musicians who came together at Humber College.

The Melody Bar will feature a free solo performance from Hamilton roots blues musician Harrison Kennedy, former member of the band Chairman of the Board at 7pm. Following Harrison’s performance will be blues karaoke led by Peter Styles.

The second floor photo exhibit will feature two blues shows: one historical and one by local photographer Dougal Bichan. The gallery will be shared with the Gladstone’s historical retrospective

show as part of the “Doors Open” festival.The Toronto Blues Society (TBS) was formed

in 1985 to ensure that blues music, was guaranteed a continued presence in Toronto. Although the blues scene at the time was thriving, it had almost disappeared during the late 1970s disco era. This suggested the need for an organization that would work to create a climate in which the opportunities for live performances, radio airplay and national touring that can make a career in music viable were being made available to blues musicians.

The Toronto Blues Society produces monthly events including the annual Women's Blues Revue, the bi-annual conference Blues Summit and supports the blues community with weekly email broadcasts, a monthly newsletter Maple Blues, maintains an on-line directory and web site. The TBS is the lead organization on the annual Maple Blues Awards, and provides "Arts Service Organization" support for professional musicians through career development workshops.

Old Mill Blues: Danny Marks regular Wednesdays at the Old Mill has moved to Friday. Blues History in Stoufville: The Morgan Davis event at the Earl of Whitchurch in Stouffville previously announced here has been cancelled. Morgan sends his regrets but there will be several opportunities to catch a performance by this Toronto blues expat (see listing pages). Doc Snake's History of the Blues will take place Thursday May 6 at the Earl of Whitchurch. Doc Snake (the creation of Hurricane Mike Thompson) is an uneducated itinerant black man who was born a slave near Vicksburg cir. 1842. His name, "Doc Snake", is his "Blues name". His real name was/is "Willie King". He died in a knife-fight when he was drunk on whiskey and gambling with a friend, in 1913. It was an "accident" and he forgave his murderer. Although he's fictitious, Willie is now "The spirit of the blues" which lives inside each of us. On Thursday May 6, starting at 8:00pm, Doc Snake will give a history of the Blues, from his perspective. A blues jam follows, starting at about 9:30pm. Tickets are $10. Lester Butler: Cult status has been conferred upon Lester Butler in wake of his tragic death at age 38. A convincing singer and mean h a r m o n i c a player, Butler distinguished himself in the contemporary blues world with

his tough, no-nonsense approach. Keeping the faith with the classic blues of Muddy Waters, Little Walter, and Howlin’ Wolf, Butler also appealed to younger audiences by ratcheting up the energy level.

Backing up legends like Billy Boy Arnold and Finis Tasby enhanced Lester’s reputation on a West Coast scene crammed with gold-standard players. Rick Rubin of American Records captured Lester & The Red Devils shaking the rafters at Hollywood’s “King King” club. As their notoriety expanded, celebrities lined up to revel in their presence, while famous names like Mick Jagger and Billy Gibbons sat in with them. The band’s national tours saw them opening for Los Lobos, John Lee Hooker, and Allman Brothers.

The Red Devils broke up in 1994---one year after their European breakthrough tour. In 1996, Butler teamed with guitarist Alex Schultz to form the band “13”. In Holland’s underground music scene, LB was accorded god-like status, receiving royal treatment at venues like Amsterdam’s “Maloe Meloe” club. “13”s debut album captured the intensity that induced audiences to lose themselves in the healing power of their music.

The circumstances surrounding Butler’s 1998 passing are beyond dispute. A court found two drug dealers guilty of overdosing an unconscious Butler while he was unable to defend himself. The lenient sentences (2 years) were a result of an out-of-control plea-bargaining process.

History’s focus should dwell exclusively on Lester Butler’s lifetime accomplishments.

Sue Foley & Peter Karp He Said She Said Blind Pig/Stony Plain/Warner Music

Fourteen vignettes on their relationship form this project by these two blues-based singer/songwriters and it brings something a little different to the CD shelves. They began all this with email and letter exchanges, hence the Wrycraft cover art. They’ve been touring this show for a while now and I think this workshopping has contributed enormously to the success of the disc. Pre-production in Ottawa with Terry Gillespie led to the two guitarists being joined by various horns & harmonica in some delightful arrangements. But the meat is in the songs: there is much more honesty here than you might have expected and no recourse to lines from the common tradition – all contemporary stuff. As befits the theme, most of the songs feature one or the other, but the bluesy opener, “Treat Me Right” is a duet that leaves no doubt that this relationship is going to be among equals. You’ll appreciate a lot of these vignettes: “Rules of Engagement” particularly. Foley sings a couple of tender ballads and “Valentine’s Day” is gorgeous, a passionate duet with great acoustic slide guitar from Karp and finger picked guitar from Foley with some lovely harmony vocals. Karp’s “Dear Girl” has a catchy melody that’ll stay with you for days. The highlights just go on. Get this one.

Little Miss Higgins Across The Plains Outside Music

The previous albums have leaned rather heavily on humourous little songs about living in the middle of nowhere, aka Nokomis, SK. There are some like that here, most prominently

“Bargain! Shop Panties”, but on other songs, Jolene Higgins has impressively pulled out all the stops on her vocals, adding horns to the arrangements. These new songs are clearly from the same wellspring, and represent a major leap forward. “Wash These Blues Away” has a long melody line that she might not have carried off so successfully before. “Snowin’ Today: Lament For Louis Riel” is the studio version of a song done live on the last album and begins a sequence that shows that political activism is still alive and well in Saskatchewan. It supplies the album’s title as well. It has also gained a verse in French. “Hope You Don’t Feel Blue (when I tell you the truth)” and lines such as ‘when they take your tractor away’ make this one much more forthright and gets some of Miss Higgins’ most impassioned singing, even over rather long passages of text. The sequence ends with an a capella “Gather My Fruit”. There’s a tender love song, performed solo, and then back to the fun stuff with “Glad The Whiskey Fits Inside My Purse”. It starts as though we’re listening to a 78 rpm disc, which then starts skipping before the rest of the song kicks in, in studio sound. The best is saved for last, with a new version of the somber “Slaughterhouse”, from the first CD. Big Dave McLean contributes harp and Tim Williams, mandolin. There’s no fun in this one but it is a stone solid down home blues. Little Miss Higgins & Foy Taylor have turned their love of thirties blues & pop music into a viable modern enterprise. With this caliber of singing & songwriting it should last as long as they want it to. They are touring from one coast to the other with the new CD but don’t get here until Mariposa. Bobby Dean Blackburn Don’t Ask… Don’t Tell Electro-Fi/Outside Music

I reviewed the first version of this disc back in November and that review is at the TBS web site. The Electro-Fi version improves on that already good album: it now opens with a new, solo, original, “Are You Ready” and a reprise closes it. “Kitchen Blues”, a wonderful duet with Liberty Silver has also been added with some fine dobro playing from Joel Morelli. There is also a very fine new slow blues, “Twilight Time”. Two of

the non-originals have been omitted and the CD re-sequenced for a better flow. It is a very good thing that such an important part of our heritage will be available much more readily.

The Steve Strongman Band Live At The Barn CD/DVD Self

The Barn is exactly that, a century old one, hiding a modern recording facility. The Barn is listed on its web site as being somewhere in Southern Ontario. It’s also hiding. The contact is Dave King who also holds the drum chair in The Steve Strongman Band. The last CD, Blues In Colour was recorded there and the idea of doing a live concert there in front of an invited audience was a brilliant one. Steve begins solo and these four performances sound warm and intimate. He invites King and his bass player, Colin Lapsley, up and the concert proper begins with the trio performing selections from Blues In Colour and Honey. “Why Would I Lie”, “Take My Arms”, “Soul Searching” and “Honey” get particularly fine performances but it’s difficult to choose from this set list. Toward the end there is a lovely introduction to “Shout It Out Loud”, written for a friend who has MS, it brought to mind that the program could perhaps have benefited from a bit more interaction with the audience - a minor quibble. At sixteen songs, this is an already generous DVD but the bonus features include an interview segment and four more songs not used in the main program. The Steve Strongman Band brings a new level of intensity to a live performance and that intensity is well captured here. Dave King directed but with him at the drum kit, he obviously prepared his camera crew well. Their camera work, the editing, the audio are all top notch. Steve Strongman is the 2009 winner of the Mel Brown Blues Award, presented by the Grand River Blues Society. This document shows it was a wise choice. Matt Andersen Live From The Phoenix Theatre Busted Flat/Universal

The Globe and Mail has called him the biggest thrill in Canadian blues since Jeff Healey and while that statement was partly a pun (Andersen is six-foot-two and 400 lbs) it was also a rave review of his live show at the Glenn Gould Studio in February. Andersen obviously thrives in a live setting, the energy & charisma behind his powerful voice, combined with his very good material entirely justifies the Globe’s statement. This CD is more than a document of a wonderful live show, however. Andersen was close to home, the Phoenix is in St. John NB, and he was able to bring some friends along: Ian Sherwood on tenor sax, Thom Swift (lead guitar on “To Leave What Should Be Left Alone”), Scott Hupman, Ryan Hupman (on “Have You Got The Blues”) (Congratulations to The Hupman Brothers for winning the Blues Album of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards for Countin’ Quarters.) & Mike Stevens (on “I Play The Fool For You” & “Devil’s Bride”) plus a string quartet (on “Bold & Beaten”). The audience, completely won over, joins in enthusiastically on the closing “Round And Round”. If you didn’t have any of Andersen’s previous albums, this handy career-summing disc is the one to get. Thom Swift blue sky day Ground Swell/Warner Music

Swift returns the favour on his second solo CD, inviting Andersen to sing harmony vocals throughout and very helpfully on “Blue Sky”. Swift’s disc is a collection of fine new songs and he has assembled a stellar band to help deliver them, led by master percussionist Geoff Arsenault and keyboard ace Bill Stevenson. The stand out songs for me are the opening “Stand Tall (when you’re overwhelmed)”; the bluesy “One Way Track”, urging today’s youth to be pro-active, with Swift on electric slide guitar & National Steel and “Killer”, a solid rocker urging people to persevere in quitting

smoking. It would seem he’s singing from deep personal experience. The one non-original is a fine performance of the Carter Family song, “No Depression In Heaven”. He writes that he did this song because he remembered family singalongs as a child. They are obviously fond memories. Swift & Charles Austin produced and they have done a marvelous job. The seamless weaving of acoustic & electric instruments is some of the most pleasing I’ve heard.

Harpdog Brown & Graham Guest Above and Beyond Dog Breath

By all accounts, it was an impressive visit from these Edmonton natives to show off their new disc. With Harpdog on vocals & harmonica and Guest on piano we have another on our list of all-too-rare such acoustic gems. Harpdog is a fine

singer, with a superb sense of the blues. His choice of Rice Miller & Jimmy Reed songs, carried off with aplomb, set the tone from the opener on through. Steve Pineo’s “Canadian Man” adds some contemporary sounds.

His harmonica work is always concise and appropriate, an essential element in this repertoire and Guest’s piano is simply magnificent: he seems to be enjoying himself immensely supplying all the accompaniment a singer might need. Mention should also be made of Duke Ellington’s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” which allows the duo to show another side of their playing.
