For most seniors, it is undoubtedly difficult to I remember how things were in September 2006. When we arrived at St. Peter’s for the first time, everything and everyone was new. As we listened to our former principal,Mr. Kevin Cuddihy, talk about JUG and the dress code at Freshman Orientation, many of us searched furtively for a friendly face in the crowd or for someone to befriend.Since then, over the past four years, the entire senior class I has changed quite drastically. Aside from meeting friends, succeeding in the classroom, and winning in sporting J events, our four years at Prep have challenged each of us to grow and to develop as part of the Prep community and as part of the greater world.

And so, since the earlier days of our Introduction to Religion classes, we have been encouraged to strive for the tenants of the Graduate at Graduation: being open to growth, being intellectually competent, being committed to doing justice, being religious, and being loving. Throughout our entire Prep careers, we have attempted to exemplify these qualities by completing community service, by participating on service trips, and by combating and identifying injustices in our community.

Thus, the theme of this year's Petrean is “Prep Men by Nature.” From a student's perspective, this theme is dually significant. In the modern world, being a “Prep man" by nature is not particularly easy. Societal and ecological problems provide us with quotidian challenges to act according to our Prep education. In society, we are persistently challenged by a wide range of injustices. And so, as we finish our time at Prep and begin our future lives, we must consistently respond to even the slightest problems with a sense of morality which reflects the qualities of the Graduate at Graduation.

Amidst the global effort to spread awareness about global warming, the 2009 Petrean is also dedicated to the endangered environment. As the international community begins talking about new methods of conservation, the members of the Petrean staff and I encourage you to consider your own impact on our environment and to remain conscious of the consequences of your actions.

And so, even though they'are seemingly different, being a Prep man for society and for the environment are, in many ways, much the same. As the senior class prepares to depart and as the underclassmen prepare to end another year, I encourage you to become, in every facet of your life, a Prep man by nature.

Most teachers would say that their motivations for teaching are an affinity for a certain subject matter and the desire to bestow their knowledge unto their students. However, it is evident that Mr. John Campion also has not only an affinity for literature, but he lives for his work, feeling the need to breathe knowledge into his students.

Mr. Campion, or simply "Sir" as his students commonly refer to him, is a staple in Prep's English department. Between writing hundreds of college recommendations and directing the school play, Mr. Campion finds the time to teach AP English Writing and Composition and AP English Literature to juniors and seniors. Although it is not required for students to take classes on the Honors or AP levels, it is understood that one should, at the very least, try to take one of Sir’s classes before he graduates from Prep. You would be hard-pressed to find any former students of Mr. Campion who would not list him among their favorite teachers.

Although Mr. Campion’s classes are primarily focused on Composition and Literature, the courses delve much deeper into the literature. Sir has the ability to point out a word that can be easily overlookedv and then examine the meaning of it in a way that can explain the author’s motivation for writing or can even change the

Mr. Campion’s classes also infuse teaching from other subject areas such as History, Philosophy, and Theology, offering students not only an understanding of the literature, but also of the world around which the text was written.

After a student taking an AP English course for the first time overcomes the initial shock of Sir's rapid speech and frantic teaching style, he acquires a true appreciation for everything he learns. Senior James Shovlin, who is taking his second year of Mr. Campion’s class, is quoted as saying, “Mr. Campion’s class was an eye opener for me. Not only has he drastically improved my

CALCULATING OUR FUTURESPatrick Hartnett, '12

As Descartes put it, "Mathematics is a more powerful instrument of knowledge than an/ other that has been bequeathed to us by human agency.” The Mathematics department at Saint Peter's believes in this strongly as they strive to teach students that math is more than numbers, shapes, or theorems. As they learn to graph lines and solve equations, freshman immediately begin to apply mathematical concepts with Ms. Erin Stark, Mr. Joseph Urbanovich, '66, and with department chairman, Mr. James Hollywood, '66. If the students have already studied basic Algebra I concepts in elementary school, Mr. Kenneth Dandorph offers Intermediate Algebra Honors, in which students are taught Algebra II concepts, Algebra I theories, and often life lessons along the way.

The sophomores move on to study geometry with Ms. Theresa LaBruno, Mr. Michael Sentembrino, 01, or Mr.

Kenneth Dandorph, examining definitions, proofs, and other geometry concepts. Those who excelled in freshman year may take Geometry Honors, taught by Mr. Joseph Urbanovich, '66, in which students learn basic trigonometry as well. Algebra II and Trigonometry is then taken with Ms. Erin Stark or Mr. Brian Healy, '99, during junior year. Math is not required for seniors, but many seniors choose to take one of many elective courses. Seniors can study Precalculus with Mr. Gregory Evans or Ms. Erin Stark. They can also take Calculus Honors with Mr. Evans, in which they will learn about limits and other advanced Calculus concepts. Mr. James Dondero, '67, teaches AP Statistics, teaching students about collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students who have excelled in former math courses can additionally study AP Calculus, a college level Calculus course, with Mr. Daniel Lyons.

learn about the beginnings of powerful dynasties and their falls and collapses. In Sophomore year, students do not take a History class, but they begin again in Junior year. Juniors learn about the history of the United States, beginning with Columbus' discovery of the New World and ending with the Civil War era. in Senior year, students learn about recent American culture and government from World War I to the War on Terror. Both courses offer an Advanced Placement option which covers the same topics in a more advanced format.

Seniors also have the option to take an additional course. There are four electives to choose from each semester: Constitutional Law, Contemporary Issues, History of'the Middle East, and The Communist Experiment. These classes are taught by Mr. Anthony Keating, ’78, Mr. Anthony Verdi, ’95, Mr. Carl DeLorenzo, ’67, and Mr. Adrian Oryshkevych, respectively. The department also includes Mr. Paul Cunneen, Mr. James Coviello, ’99, and its chairperson, Ms. Mary Anne McElroy.

history from the great ancient civilizations to the development of America. Led by Ms. Mary Anne McElroy, the History Department teaches students about different time periods and civilizations around the world. Along with this knowledge, the students learn note-taking skills and study habits to help become successful not only in their History class, but also in each class they take at Prep. Although students are only required to take three years of history classes, the teachers ensure that the students acquire as much knowledge as they would in a four year history program.

Freshmen begin their Prep career learning about World Civilizations, beginning with ancient civilizations throughout the world and ending with the modern societies of the 1900’s. Civilizations studied include Egypt, Rome, Greece, and India. Students also

Prep Men by Nature

The Religion Department at Prep is hard at work this /ear; not only teaching students, but also building their character in order to embody the characteristics of the Graduate at Graduation. The Religion department offers religion courses that cover all four years of a student's life at Prep.

When students enroll as Freshmen, they focus on the Old Testament, looking at scripture and understanding the deeper meaning of the text. During Sophomore year, Prep students begin with a review of the Old Testament, and then move straight into the New Testament with the four Gospels, The Acts of the Apostles and the foundation of the Christian Doctrines.

After two years of studying scripture, Juniors focus on problems in modern society. They spend the year looking at issues such as economic justice and humans rights. To finish their career at Prep, Seniors study church history, looking at how the church was formed and how many historical events that shaped the Catholic faith.

Throughout a student’s career at Prep, they will learn a vast amount from the religious courses offered. They learn about topics ranging from Genesis to Exodus, St. Ignatius to the Jesuits and even the Church then and now.

Yet, the Religion Department aims not only to teach, but also to build and to instill into Prep’s young men the characteristics required of the Graduate at Graduation and to prepare them for the world ahead of them. Teachers work to produce men who are open to growth and intellectually competent. They seek to ensure that Prep students leave as well-rounded and open-minded men for others.

TALKING IN TONGUESMichael Machado, '11

The St. Peter's Prep community is composed of multiple ethnicities, characterized by various cultural heritages and by diverse traditions. The Modern Language department engages Prep students by enhancing their linguistic and grammatical abilities. Students have the option to study Italian, German, French, and Spanish. Not only do they learn to speak and write these languages, but they also learn the cultural traditions of the respective countries themselves.

And so, the students who partake in the three levels of Italian offered at Prep are exposed to the culture of Italy, as well as to the language itself. Students of Italian I progress gradually, as Ms. Rosalie Romano, most commonly addressed as “Signora" by her students, aids in their learning of the basic grammatical rules and vocabulary of the language. In Italian II and III, Juniors and Seniors expand in their learning, especially as Signora challenges the Juniors and Seniors to converse in Italian.

Mr. Ryan Grusenski, '03, leads the study of the German language, He begins with an introduction to the language in German I for Sophomores, explaining the basics of sentence formation, verb forms, and common vocabulary. Mr. Grusenski elaborates on these rudimentary skills in his German II class for Juniors, and ultimately challenges his Seniors in both German III Honors and in AP German to

become as fluent as possible for any third year German student.Again, students of Spanish learn not only the language, but also 1

some of the cultural traditions in the Spanish-speaking world. Mr. Frank fl Giordano, '99, teaches the rudimentary concepts of Spanish in his 1 Spanish I class for sophomores. Ms. Aymee Torres continues Spanishl studies with Juniors in Spanish II. Meanwhile, Ms. Ana Garcia engages her a Sophomore students in Spanish I Honors, which features a more | rigorous curriculum. Ms. Garcia also offers AP Spanish Literature andl Basic Spanish for Medical and Business Personnel for students who are® more than willing to continue in their study of the language. Ms. N e ry j Gomez introduces the Spanish language to Sophomores in her own# Spanish I course, while also teaching the Seniors who have chosen toffl take a third year of the language in her Spanish III Honors class.

Students also have the option to take courses in French at St.B Peter's Prep. Mr. Frank Giordano teaches all three levels of theH language. Sophomores begin with a basic introduction to the French ■ language, and can continue to study the nuances of the language throughH their Junior and Senior years in French II and III. Students are alsofl introduced to the finer points of French culture.

Matt Feeney, '10Having had Italian for three years, how have you applied the lessons from the course in your everyday life?As a person with Italian heritage, I was always regretful of the fact that I had never learned the language. When I saw that Prep offered an Italian course, I jumped on the opportunity. J found a passion for the language and found I loved

to speak it. I spoke to my mom, in Italian, ordered food in Italian at restaurants, and spoke to other students in Italian. At the end of junior year, I was afforded the opportunity to visit Italy with one of my best friends. We stayed with his family, and I was able to meet people my age in Italy. I feel fortunate to have taken two years of Italian because I was able to communicate with everyone I met. Now in my third year of Italian, I still enjoy the class and the studies, and hope to someday achieve fluency. I'm glad I have been a part of the Italian program at Prep, and feel that it has given me a huge step towards fluent speaking. Thanks to Prep, and Signora Romano, I've found a new passion that I feel I can pursue for the rest of my life; Italian language and culture.

GUIDING US ALONG .. I

Group Guidance, though not a typical class, is an important part of student life here at St. Peter's Prep. All years, Freshmen through Seniors, have guidance counselors, but only Freshmen and Juniors have a group guidance class. Although both Freshmen and Junior classes are labeled as "Group Guidance”, they differ in their content and focus. In Freshman Group Guidance, the guidance counselors help the new students get acclimated to the Prep atmosphere. Oftentimes, the Freshman group guidance classes will have open discussions about how life at Prep is going, and about the best way to approach a new school year in a new school.

In Sophomore year, although there are no formal classes, guidance counselors may still meet with their counselees at lunch or during a free period just to see how Sophomore year is treating them, and to make sure they continue utilizing good habits that will make them successful in and out of the classroom. Ms. Lori Berman, Ms. Kathleen Rowan, Fr. Anthony Azzarto, and Fr. John Mullin counsel the Freshmen and Sophomores.

As Junior year rolls around, students are assigned a new counselor that will stay with them through the rest of their Prep careers, In Junior Group Guidance, students become familiar with the college application process. Students learn how to handle rigorous standardized tests, such as the PSATs, the SATs, and the ACTs, and what an SAT Subject Test, or SAT II actually is, and how many they should take. Students are also assisted in maintaining good grades and keeping up with their extra-curricular activities in order to ensure that they are best prepared to apply for college. Also, in the second semester, Juniors have the opportunity to complete on­line personality and interest assessments and then analyze the results. These results help the students realize what type of college they want to go to (where, what size, etc.) and what major they might be interested in studying in the future.

In Senior year, like in Sophomore year, there is no formal group guidance class, but students are expected to meet individually with their counselors to provide the counselors an opportunity to get to know the students better. The Junior and Senior year counselors are Mr. James Dondero, Ms. Erin Knittel, Mr. Joseph Korfmacher, and Mr. Jordan Roldan. Ms. Janice Martineau works in the college placement office and serves as secretary for these counselors and students. These

counselors help students become acclimated to the rigors of a college preparatory school, and help the students become more familiar with the college application process. Basically, the guidance counselors help students with any problems that they might have. Now where would we be without guidance counselors?

P R E P SO FAR...By Isaac Atayero

Remember in eighth grade, when you were at the top of the food chain: how it seemed like learning, teachers,

homework, report cards and detention were all over. Graduation was your biggest glory run and summer...oh yes!

That summer, that perfect summer, seemed to fly by. Then, you came to Prep, and you became the baby again, back

to rock bottom at the bottom of the food chain.

That was 1.1 thought I had high school all figured out, or so I thought. High school was nothing like I had

imagined, and it still changes every time, completely unpredictable. I was overwhelmed by the work, the schedule

and the responsibility. Now, in the third marking period, guess what? I am still learning. I am still learning not to

procrastinate, still learning how to always stay in dress code, still learning to ignore the temptations of using the

stairs instead of the elevator, still learning to work studying into my schedule, and still learning to create a schedule.

Still a freshman, still learning.

Prep changes. The longer you stay, the newer it becomes.What I learned, not just academically, cannot be

measured. For me, each day is a new experience, even if it's finally knowing the name of that guy you always see

third period on C day or finding a quicker route to get to your next class. What I am trying to say is some things

cannot be taught by teachers or by textbooks (or Google). They have to be experienced. Why? I don't know. I'm just

a freshman trying to learn the fourth conjugation of Latin verb endings. But I think the most important lesson Prep

teaches is humility. Humility. Eight years of knowing it all becomes almost rendered useless. This is just one of the

many ways Prep humbles you. From the smallest things like needing help getting your lock to unlock to the

asking a comrade what letter day it is.You become humbled. I become humbled.

The best thing about this humbling process is that you are not left alone to figure it out. Like I said, I am just a

freshman trying to learn the fourth conjugation of Latin verb endings (No, but seriously, what does “ero” mean.).

To help you through this refining process, you have students, faculty, alumni (whom I like to call the “been-there,

done-thaters”), and teachers.Prep gives you a well rounded experience.

Now, I am just a freshman, and what you are about to read next might a bit stilted and scripted, but it is

true: Prep makes you a real man for others (Yeah, I know, very original). Believe me when I say I still don t know

where Shalloe Hall is. My point? I get humbled each day, and I am still learning about life from life because life

itself is a school.

When a student attends St. Peters Prep, he not only leaves as well educated student, but he also leaves as a well rounded person. Growth does not just occur while in the classroom. Rather, it occurs both on and off the field. Being an athlete at Prep is more than just being able to score a touchdown or to kick the winning goal, it is also teamwork, motivation, and brotherhood.

Prep's athletics is a tradition that is continued every year by the men who put on their respective uniforms and fight to prove that St. Peters is the best school out there. Supported by the Marauder Nation, St. Peters Prep strives to be a presence on the field that is unstoppable. From Prep football playing a game in Maryland to Prep basketball playing (and beating) Don Bosco Prep in the Barn, Prep's student athletes are some of the best in the state. But Prep athletics is more than just winning and losing. It is embracing the brotherhood that Prep instills in everyone. No matter what sport is being played, the team on the field is family. They are the Prep family, and they are not just nine men on a field. They are not just a group of men on the rugby pitch; they are a family, a family that is over 900 strong. W e are a family of believers, risk takers, and champions. This is what Prep Athletics is about.

The 2009-2010 season at St. Peter's Prep has treated the teams well. Prep football advanced to the state finals, and the basketball team is on its way to doing the same. Swimming has once again proved itself to be a driving force in the water, having its most successful season ever under the direction of head coach Ryan Heffernan. Victory is determined not by wins and losses, but by the athletes' desire to succeed. Prep's athletics have accomplished victory, and as the year comes to an end, the Prep family has never been happier reflecting upon this success.

Every teenager that has ever entered St. Peter's Prep and has played the game of football knows exactly what these words mean. You're playing for one of the best programs in the state.

As a freshman, you want to be noticed. As a sophomore, you are trying to get on the field and play. Junior year you

i are trying to prove that you deserve a starting spot. Senior year is when you will truly appreciate it all. The class of 2010 is privileged and humbled to have experienced what they have. Freshman year, they not only met each other, but they also embraced their common experience. They formed a bond and had a taste of what Prep Football was all about. W e were adopted by the older teammates and joined our new family. By senior year we expected only the best out of our team. W e knew it was our last year and it was our time to shine. The bond we created for three years was stronger than ever and we needed that bond with the schedule we were about to face.

This year Prep made it all the way back to the promised land where we eventually fell to the National Champions, Don Bosco Prep, but that does not sum up all the hard fought wins we had this year. This year's daunting schedule made us have to work hard in the off-season and summer workouts, and we were up for the challenge. Whether it was beating Bergen Catholic twice, St. Joe's Montvale on a rainy night at Caven, or going toe-to-toe with the Ironmen in the State Championship, Prep never gave up. W hat this senior class has done for the Prep program will never be forgotten, and we will never forget what Prep football has done for us.

and explosive are a few adjectives ascribed to Prep's varsity basketball team. Many say that this group of young men is the best basketball team in Prep history. Coming off of back to back county championship titles and starting off the season ranked fourth in the state and in the top 100 in the country allow the imagination to run wild at the possibilities of this year’s team. Led by Captains Ronald Roberts and Myles Davis, and seniors jj Hladik, Matt Porter, Raphael Ortiz, James Calabrese, Alex Diaz, and Sequan Jackson, Prep has a seemingly endless arsenal in its starting five and deep off of the bench. Prep’s starting five includes dominant point guard Kevin Walker, lights-out shooter Myles Davis with an equally dangerous threat from behind the arc in JJ Hladik, St. John's bound power forward Ron Roberts, and the big man himself, Keith Lumpkin. Coming off the bench, Prep has the lightning quick Stephon Whyatt, the versatile Chase Fluellen, and a future All-American in the freshman, Jordan Arthur.

Prep continues to dominate HCIAA contention, not having lost a game in the past two years. However, Prep amped up its schedule this year to include four top 30 teams in the country. Despite some very close losses to these teams, Prep continues to show its character in the face of adversity by continuing to remain together on its quest to win the first basketball state championship in the past 50 years. Many ask if Prep could finish off the state championship this year after their embarrassing upset last year. The answer is yes; with their overwhelming talent and intelligence, all they need is toughness and heart,

In only its fifth year of existence, the Fencing team is one of the younger varsity teams at Prep. The team first started as a dub sport in the winter 2005 with just a hand full of participants, but now 5 years later, it can proudly say it has a sign up roaster of almost forty to fifty boys at the beginning of each season. The head coach, Gregory Evans, and his head captain, Matthew Grapstul'10, try their best to ensure that all those that sign up are given a fair shot at a starting spot, since only nine can truly play at a time. W ith the help of their assistant Captains Conner Gleason'10 and William Reynolds'11, this was made a little easier. The first day of practice is typically set up to divide the boys into three weapon types; Epee, Saber, and Foil; from there, the best of each group is determined by their talent, athletic ability, and desire to play. W ith that, this year’s starting roster was very difficult to determine, being that its star player, Sean Buckley, and others that graduated the previous year held many of the starting positions.

The list was finalized with the following as those who would represent the Prep Fencing Team: Epee with Matthew Grapstul’10, Conner Gleason’10, Bernard Chester’13, Conner Kearns'11, Ryan Kearns’11, Eric Griffin'11, and Andrew Chee'12; Saber with Zach Helming'10, W ill Reynolds'11, and Jeremy Ho’11; and lastly Foil with Ted Weinberg'10, Dominick Rotondo’11, Conor Wiggins' 11, and David Kong’13.

Despite being faced with much adversity for being such a new varsity port, the young team had to combat many issues on the strip. In addition to the collective lack of experience, many of the schools Prep faced were state-ranked competitors, but this did not stop the team from also becoming ranked in its Epee and Foil teams. Out of the nine starters on the team, veterans Matt Grapstul’10, Conner Gleason'10, and William Reynolds'11, who all fence out of high school, did their best this season to guarantee the team did better than its previous 1-7 record, from the year before. However, the young team still struggled from match to match through the

Gregory Evans, who has been with the team since it became a varsity sport did, however, claim that, "I am very proud of my team, as long as they did their best and had fun getting the job done. I couldn't ask for anything more.” So for now, this "newly” added team looks proudly to what its horizons can bring. Whether new competitions, or new eager fencers, it will be able to stand strong and continue the Marauder Spirit!

Prep's indoor Track team had another season of excellence. Because of the phenomenal coaching received from Head Coach Mr. Michael Burgess and Assistant Coaches Mr. Jerry McCann, Mr. Peter Camacho, and Mr. Christopher Caulfield, ’03, the team had many significant achievements.

Junior Kevin Garrigan had another great season. Consistently leading the team in the 800-meter race, Garrigan's time was the 17th fastest time in New Jersey. Another 800-meter runner, James Sylvester, '11, also demonstrated proficiency in the event. The hurdle team did remarkably as well, with Douglas Payne, '11, and James Shovlin, '10', leading the way. In addition, Senior Keith Cummings dominated the 55- meter dash, achieving the fastest time in New jersey and qualifying for 1st Team All-American.

Although only a freshman, Demetrius Cross demonstrated that he could run just as well as an upperclassman, running the 4th fastest 55-meter time in New jersey and qualifying for 2nd Team All- American. Another freshman, Ryan McGann, also distinguished himself as a competent runner. McGann's 1600-meter time was the 8th fastest in New Jersey, which qualified him for the National Scholastic Championship for the freshman one mile.

Sophomore Najee Glass had another astounding season. Glass' 400-meter time was the fastest not only in New Jersey, but in the entire nation as well. In addition, Glass also excelled in the 600-meter race and qualified for 2nd Team All-American. In the 800- meter race, his time was the 8th fastest in NJ. Clearly, we can expect exceptional things from the track program in the coming seasons.

The team also illustrated its prowess in relays. The Sprint Medley team, composed of Demetrius Cross, '13, Dj Singleton, '12, Najee Glass, '12, and Kevin Garrigan, '11, had the 5th fastest time in New Jersey, which is the 8th fastest time in America, and also qualified for 1st Team All-American honors. In addition, the 4x200-meter relay team, consisting of Glass '12, Cross, '13, Cummings, '10, and Huggins, ‘11, had the 11th fastest time in New Jersey. Both of these relay teams qualified to compete in the Nike Indoor Nationals in Boston, Massachusetts. As a whole, the team did outstandingly well this season. And as we say good-bye to Seniors Ducarmal Hyacinthe, James Shovlin, Alfred Dobson, and Tevin Manning, Prep will continue to uphold its reputation as one of the state's track powerhouses

Within the confines of what appears to be an aged and worn grammar school building, sitting the corner of York and Van Vorst, is one of the hardest working teams St. Peter's Prep has ever seen. This is the site of Prep Wrestling. Faced with the physically and mentally demanding nature of the sport, the Prep Wrestling, team managed to flourish in the face of adversity. Facing its toughest schedule yet, the wrestlers had their work cut out for them. In December, setting a new precedent for Prep Wrestling, the team traveled to Reno, Nevada where they competed in the toughest tournament in the country, The Reno Tournament of Champions. Leading the way were seniors Frank Pestana, Joe Buckman, and captain Kevin Innis. Following their leadership were juniors James Lancelotti, Devin Ruiz, and James Fox. Securing key victories throughout the year for the Marauders were sophomore Tony Pafumi, sophomore Alex Richardson, sophomore Frank Colom, sophomore Frank Biafore, and freshman James Kellner. With the leadership of Head Coach Anthony Verdi, Head Assistant Coach Ed Roselle, and assistant coaches Mark Taraszkiewicz, A.J. Caprio, Brian Innis, and Frank Dugan, the Prep Wrestling squad proved its dominance yet again by posting a 20-4 season record, capturing the Hudson County title for the second consecutive year, and advancing senior Kevin Innis, junior James Fox, junior Devin Ruiz, sophomore Tony Pafumi, and sophomore Alex Richardson to the NJSIAA State Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic City. They fared well in the tournament as senior captain Kevin Innis marked a second place finish in the finals. St Peter's Prep has truly established itself as one of New Jersey’s most competitive wrestling programs, and the success of its wrestlers is sure to carry on to next season, both at the high school and college levels.

ACADEMIC BOWL TEAMJames LiVolsi '11

Being a member of the Academic Bowl team requires both a strong devotion to practicing and a vast wealth of knowledge. On Wednesdays, Thursdays, and some Mondays, members of the Academic Bowl team head up to the second floor of the Humanities Building to practice. Practices mimic competitions, in which teams of four answer questions on any random topic.

Although the wide variety of difficult questions already makes winning a challenge, members of the Academic Bowl team must also quickly “buzz-in” in order to answer the question. Whichever team hits the buzzer first has one chance to correctly answer the question. Mr. Scannapieco, the moderator, helps the team with its understanding of the topics involved in many of the questions. Junior Co-Captain David Lizza stated, “It really helps us learn when Mr. Scannapieco interjects to add some knowledge pertaining to the question."

The Academic Bowl team sends teams of four to compete against other schools throughout the year. A match consists of two teams of four being asked the same questions. For the first twenty questions, which are called “Toss-Ups,” teams can earn up to fifteen points but also can lose up to five points. Although a correct answer is worth ten and an incorrect answer is worth zero, answering before a certain point in the questions allows a team to add five points if they are correct or to lose five points if they are incorrect. In the Bonus Round, teams can collaborate before answering the three difficult questions.

Mr. Matthew Scannapieco helps the academic bowl team with difficult question by researching it and going over it with the dedicated members.

After this, the team with the most overall points is declared the winner. Prep's Academic Bowl team has been highly successful due to the intelligent members of the team who work very hard to win the competitions. Co-Captains David Lizza, James Kerwin, and Jamie Grasing led the team as juniors and continue to help their other teammates. The Academic Bowl team has been very strong this year and likely will continue with its success because of the considerable participation of underclassmen.

Members of the Anime club know their comics inside and out. Anime is type of Japanese comic book. Unlike the usual ,omic book, Anime stresses art and exaggerated human forms. The stories have a plot to them but are also visually hteresting. The artwork is very detailed and exact. Members of the club often share different forms of Anime from books :nd the Internet. Moderated by Ms. Singleton, the club meets every Tuesday. The president of the club is Enrique Lopez III.

The club is very unique and examines a different form of entertainment. Anime is an up and coming hobby. It is gradually gaining more attention and popularity. Readers enjoy the beautiful art work combined with the highly adventurous [lots.

The St. Peter's Prep Campus Ministry Team is a vital part to making these religious efforts a success. Starting in July, those chosen to be a part of the Campus Ministry Team (CMT) go on a retreat not only to learn how lead retreats and to perform the tasks vital to the the team, but also to work on forging

The Campus Ministry Team performs three main roll each year in the Prep community. The first is acting as “bi brothers” for the freshman class. Each freshman is assignei a member of the Campus Ministry Team who is tasked witrf helping them with their transition into the Prep community This hopefully makes the transition to freshman year a littli smoother. The Big Brothers help the freshman to adapt ancj lead them through their first year at Prep, helping the flourish in their new home. The second task that the CM is responsible for is leading retreats. From the freshmaH Ignite, to the Junior Emmaus, the members of the CMT take pride in leading the retreats. Many students agree that one! of the best parts of the Prep experience is going on thd retreats sponsored by the CMT Although it is not always seen on the surface, the retreat leaders put a lot of time) and effort into making each retreat a success. Whether! they are writing reflections or cooking dinner, the retreat! leaders play a vital role in the success of Campus Ministry! Finally, certain members of the CMT serve as Eucharistiq Ministers. It's often not easy to keep a school-wide massj organized. When there are over 900 students and faculty! that receive either communion or a blessing, having onlw one priest does not suffice. The Campus Ministry Team! assists the priests in this role, acting as Eucharistic Minis' and working to serve others.

The work of the Campus Ministry Team at Prep does not go unnoticed. Weather the team is leading morning prayer on the loudspeaker, reflecting on past experiences during masses, or having lunch with their little brothers, everyone has been effected by the actions of these men. It is not always easy to set an example for others, but this group exemplifies St. Peters Prep's motto of "Men for (Others." They are seen as leaders in the school and are constantly being looked upon as a model for their peers. Each of these leaders, in his own way, brings Christ's ; message of love and service to Saint Peter’s Prep.

The Classics Club, moderated by Mr. Burokas, offers students interested in studying the Ancient Greek and Roman cultures and languages a venue to pursue this interest. Students often find that the club provides a unique opportunity to preserve and to appreciate these rich past cultures. Furthermore, the club provides a meaningful context for those students still studying Latin or pursuing Ancient Greek, offering students with a background of daily life, the legal system, and the events which inspired the preeminent writers of the period. This year, the club also regularly screened I, Clavdivs, a film series portraying the history of the Roman Empire from the reign of Augustus Caesar to the reign of Claudius himself. Very often, the historical events which the club discusses enrich how students perceive Roman history and Roman society, making the topics discussed in academic Latin classes more tangible and stimulating.

In a world filled with comedy Prep has a club to show its appreciation for this comedy. Many students have sought a group in which to discuss the role of comedy in daily life. The Society of Comedic Appreciation was formed in order 'or people to enjoy and to share the work of comedians. The moderator of the club is Ms. Toomb, who was surprised how quickly the club increased in popularity amongst the members of the student body. Meeting in the Campus Ministry lounge every week, attendees and aspiring comedians talked about an array of different topics. Club imembers watched many different stand-up routines from a variety of different comedians. Club favorites to watch were 'Saturday Night Live skits and anything with Will Ferrell in it. The digital shorts from Saturday Night Live were also (something club members enjoyed watching. After the Christmas Liturgy, the club showed the movie “Elf in the Campus Ministry lounge. Many people showed up for the ievent and had a great time. After its first year, the Society of Comedic Appreciation has proved to be a success.

TURNING UP THE HEAT

Joshua Barry, '10Throughout the year, Prep students have the

opportunity to participate in an array of social activities that are hosted by the school. Some of the most popular events hosted by Grand and Warren are the school dances. Ranging from simple yet elegant dances in the school cafeteria to the Senior Prom hosted at The Manor, the Dance Committee plays a large roll in making sure these events take place. At the beginning of every year, the group starts to plan for the events ahead. They pick out a theme and start to slowly select the specifics of each dance.

Very often students will arrive at one of the underclassman dances in the cafeteria and be amazed by how the space was transformed from a simple room where 500 students sit eating lunch to a dance floor and how the lunches that were being enjoyed that afternoon were now being replaced by buffet dinners.

Once a student becomes an upperclassman at Prep, | the entire dance experience changes. One graduates from i the cafeteria to a more elegant affair. Students arrive in limos wearing tuxedos awaiting the night ahead. A DJ playsj; music all night long, and the dance floor seems never to empty.

These dance experiences are memories many Prep men will have for the rest of their lives. These memories were made my the Dance Committee here at Prep. Without them, none of these visions would be able to become a reality.

The St. Peter's Prep theatrical program has a long standing history as being one of a kind. The dedication and expertise is easily recognizable from the time the curtains open to when they close. None of this prestige would be accredited to the program without its fearless leader, Mr. Jack Campion. As a director he brings a vision and enthusiasm that only a man of his brilliance can. He not only directs the actors but he molds them. Mr. Campion is simply the best when it comes to getting the most out of his actors.

This year Mr. Campion took a risk when he chose to ■put on a student written play. “Who You Callin' A [Thespian?" was written by seniors Ben Glassen and Matthew Mazzari. Mr. Campion filled his cast with a mostly [veteran senior cast and a few very promising Underclassmen. The actors were incredibly enthusiastic and it showed in their performance. The "Jersey Journal” gave it their "best-bet” for that weekend’s entertainment. The play was a smash hit, filling the house almost every jnight. The constant laughter and applause were signs that SPrep's theater program of 2010 has met the bar set by the (fantastic performances preceding it. It is clear that Mr.

Now, none of this would have been possible without the heart, sweat, and tears of the Stage Crew. Actors and directors would be nothing without them. Their countless hours of hard manual labor were evident when gazing upon the amazing set they had created. Although, they work with power tools there is no denying they have made art. The attention to detail and specificity of every nail is truly a testament to their craft.

Joe Bernardo, '10Engineering is a very common field of study for Prep men to consider pursuing in college. It requires strong analytical and mathematical ability as well as the patience that allows critical thinking to flourish. This year, students explored the universe of engineering science. The interests of the club members vary from electrical engineering, software engineering, civil and environmental engineering, to computer engineering. Students took a trip to the Liberty Science Center, where they sampled various fields of scientific study. Ms. Tursi and Ms. Stark, the club moderators, encouraged and guided students toward scientific discovery. They quickly determined the dubs

engineering and structured the dub’s activities around their experience as well as our interests.

In one of the various demonstrations that the engineering club was able to take advantage of, former physics teacher, Fr. O'Brien S.J, and students attending St. Peter’s College, conducted a lesson about the properties of plasma. Plasma, an element that exists outside of the norma boundaries of the most common states of matter, drew a great interest from the club members. This club provides students with the opportunity to scientifically experiment and at the same time experiment with the profession that might occupy their futures.

As people around the world being to become more iware of their carbon footprints and of their impact on the Environment, the members of the St. Peters Prep Environmental Club help to encourage such activity in the [ocal community. Founded in 2007, the club aims not only to clean up our earth but also to educate students on the pffect everyone has on the environment. From hosting lectures on bird watching to volunteering at the Hudson County Earth Day, the members of this club are a vital part bf the Prep's community.

The Environmental Club is working hard this year to [attract students from the newly developed "Environmental Science" class, taught by Mr. Michael Lyons, '02. Members of the Gamer Club are the finest video game players in the school. Whether it is pla/ing Play Station 3, >] Box 360, or Nintendo 64, these gamers know all of the tricks. Moderated by Ms. Angermyer, the club members play j variety of different games. Club favorites are Super Smash Brother's Brawl and Call of Duty. For many of the member! playing each other can get very competitive. They all enjoy competing each other. They say it helps make them better at thl games.

The President of the Gamer Club is Austin Cabrera and the Vice President is Brendan Turfan. They take pride ii organizing this club. For the Walk-a-thon, the dub organized a tournament to raise money for homerooms. The Gamel Club has earned more and more recognition. The club is coming off a great year and has very exciting plans for the future. ]

The German Club has been more successful and active this year than any other. The club has hosted numerous events, such as going to German operas, going to eat, participating in multi-cultural week, and representing the great German language and culture.

With their fearless leader, Herr Grusenski, they learn about Germany's culture while taking part in numerous fun activities, as well. Working with the German exchange was a great experience for all who were involved and is a highlight for the German department every other year. The exchange provides students of the German language a great opportunity to learn more about Germany's language and culture.

Each year, members of the German club take a trip to Manhattan to enjoy one of the classic German operas being performed at the Metropolitan Opera House. The members of German Club also look forward to competing in the Copa del Prep soccer tournament every year to prove it's athletic dominance.

This club looks to continues to grow, learn, and have fun. Students that join the German dub work hard to improve and Deutschclub ist das Beste!

Charles Weening, '12ntramurals is one of the clubs at Prep that always has many nteresting activities. The biggest success this year was Undoubtedly Androball. This Prep pastime was taken to a ligher level this year. The Androball teams were led by captains Michael Wright, Jonathan McCarthy, John Kaufman, 3atrick Moran, and Alexander Yang. Kenny Walter was the Commissioner. All of the teams never failed to excite the crowd.The flag football season seemed very hopeful this year.. Unfortunately, the snow from the past year posed a problem, and the season was snowed out. This year was an joverall success for the Intramural Club. Copa del Prep and Androball are just some of the activities the Intramurals Committee has organized. Moderator Mr. Mike Lyons is Very pleased. A few years ago, this club went from a small group of people and has expanded into an interesting league with many players and fans alike.

Marauder Nation is famous for making its presence known at every athletic event, and this year was no different. The Nation had a reputation to live up to this year (with the previous years being as successful as they were) and, under the leadership of moderator Mr. Dan Healy, '01, the group was poised to make this year better than ever. Seniors were critical in this process, especially Marauder Mike Wright, who took the honor from last year's senior Marauder Matt Bender. Assisting Mike were his Henchmen: seniors Tim Mernar, Tim Gonzalez, James Shovlin, Vin Caldas, Pat Moran, John McCarthy, and Zach Lanning. All of these seniors were prepared to give the Nation the energy and atmosphere never before seen at Prep.

The season began with the Varsity Football Game against Saint Joseph's Prep of Philadelphia, held at the Rutgers University campus. Although the team fought hard

and the fans kept cheering, the team lost 40-28. As th season progressed and after a plethora of one-sided victorie i gave the team yet another County Championship cam: Prep's biggest challenge, traveling up to Ramsey to take o: our most heated rival, the Ironmen of Don Bosco Prefi Instead of the entire Maurader Nation wearing black for i “Blackout" which was done last year, this year everybod; wore white for a "Whiteout". The energy, excitement, an: passion made the game unforgettable, but all went awrj with a 42-9 loss to the Ironmen. The team got one mor chance at Bosco, the setting: being Giants Stadium in th! NJSIAA State Championship Game December 5tK Marauder Nation once again came with all of it's mite, bit. Bosco eventually emerged victorious.

years, Prep pulled off the upset of a lifetime by defeating the Warriors 84-81. The team rolled on throughout the remainder of the season winning it's third consecutive Hudson County Championship and Maurader Nation was there to celebrate.

Looking back, Marauder Nation ’10 was one of the most successful groups that Prep has seen. All of the memories will forever be cherished, whether it be the tailgates, the bus rides, the “Roller-Coasters’’, or storming the court after defeating Don Bosco in basketball. The Nation provides many of the moments which Prep graduates will look back on and will be proud to have been a part of. Marauder Nation is a key component in creating the brotherhood formed here at Saint Peter's Prep.

Seamus Dwyer, '11Once again, Prep is expressing the versatility of its students by presenting the musical Pippin. Directed by Jim Dondero, '66,

the musical is a comedy taking place in the Middle Ages. The show stars Dante Carrassco as Pippin, Catherine Hussey andi Alisia Morejon as Bertha, Alessandra Rabellino and Tara O’Donnell as Catherine, Michael Hetherington and Dan Demuro asj the lead players, Joseph LaBarbera as King Charlemagne, and Alanna Friel as Fastrada. The Prep musical has been one of thef events exhibiting Prep’s more artistic side. The eponymously named musical Pippin tells the story of the son of thei Carolingian king Charlemagne. The musical opens with an acting troupe inviting the audience to join in the story of a prince! searching for the meaning of life. As the action turns to Pippin, we learn that Pippin desires to lead a war against his father,! but he also does not wish to be a war hero. Eventually he decides to lead a revolt against Charlemagne. This action all! occurs while Pippin continues to struggle to find fulfillment. Pippin then falls in love with a commoner, Catherine. When the; acting troupe tells he can only be remembered by committing suicide, Pippin instead chooses to live with his love, Catherine.!

Acceptance into the National Honor Society is a prestigious ihonor which highlights the achievement of those who have Iworked diligently to embody the leadership, integrity, and jwisdom that a Prep man learns in his four years. Each !member has demonstrated these qualities, whether it be in jPrep or in his community. They have challenged themselves jacademically, devoting countless hours to their studies.

With pride and integrity these men held themselves jhigh even in times of stress, and while they conquered the obstacles that laid in their path, they made sure to exalt (themselves along with their peers. Each one is a true leader (who is the epitome of hope. For, he knows that anything worth putting heart into is worth succeeding in. Behind every great show is an equally great crew that works behind the scenes to make everything look flawless. This year's play, "Who You Callin' a Thespian,” required an array of sets that included everything from a bar to the inside of a jail cell. Come December, the St. Peters Prep stage crew began work on this year's drama. Complete with an arsenal of new tools, the sets started to take shape from piles of 2x4 and plywood. Flats, bars, jail cells, and even a stove started were painstakingly constructed for use in the show's dress rehearsals this January.

Under the leadership of Mr. James Coviello, '99, this years crew not only built the sets but also designed the lighting and sound displays that would be put to the test during the shows three performances. Working closely with

Coviello, the crew had four Crew Chiefs were in charge different aspect of this year's show. Jonathan McCarthy, '1C worked closely with his team to design the lighting for th show. Under his direction, this team of men hung, change? and programed countless light bars. Cory Benavides focused his efforts this year on sound. He worked with performers and coordinated microphones, working of the sound boards during the three performances. FinallJ Seniors Joshua Barry and Daniel Seara coordinated th! physical construction of the sets, managing stage left an right, respectively, during the performances.

Director Jack Campion often tells his actors tfoi everyone is vital to the show, no one being more importar then anyone else. Taking pride in their work, the St. Peter Prep Stage Crew hopes to continue its work in the theate for years to come.

At Prep, there are clubs that cater to every type of person, even the movie buffs. This dub, focusing on some of the ,'ery well known movies such as the Star Wars Trilogy and Godzilla movies, screens and discusses them. Meeting about bnce a month, the club takes the opportunity to screen a different movie every meeting. Sitting with popcorn and soda, the ;lub members throughly enjoy their time in meetings watching movies. When asked about the meetings, club member Tom fulp said that there "was no better way to end a long school day than by sitting back and watching a good movie."

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, the members of the Star Wars Club commemorate the incredible impact !hat the film series of George Lucas has had. Even to this day, there are frequent Star Wars conventions around the United [States that show the true magic of Star Wars. As a huge influence of culture, theses movies have created things such as the Princess Leia" hairdo as well as the famous weapon, the lightsaber. Every now and then, the club members bring in paraphernalia such as action figures and posters in order to bring the celebration to its fullest potential.

Toward the end of each school year, underclassmen elect their Student Council representatives for the upcoming year. As ballots are handed out in homerooms, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen are asked to select those of their peers who exemplify the qualities of a member of the Student Council: dedicated, motivated, and determined.

Comprised of individuals with such character traits, the

Student Council is able to organize and to spearhead man successful events throughout the year. In October, Studel Council members help plan and then run the Walkathq! fundraiser, raising money that goes toward scholarships f| their peers. A few weeks after the moon-bounce arj mechanical bull from the Walkathon are taken down, or] might hear the tune of an acoustic guitar or a rock barl booming from the Prep cafeteria on either an Unplugged i an Amped Up night. Come this spring, the Prep communil can look forward to a Student Council-run Talent Show I well, the proceeds of which will support American aid | Haiti. And so, from Walkathon-kickoffs starring Taylor Swj and Kanye West to Amped Up nights featuring stand-J routines by senior Zach Lanning, the Student Counl provides the Prep community with entertainment ari amusement, as well as with opportunities to suppol numerous causes.

Organizing events, although very important, is but on facet of the Student Council’s role in the school. As th elected officials of the student body, Student Count} members serve as the face and voice of their peers, /j volunteer-run events such as Prep Open Houses, Aluml Picnics, the Communion Brunch, and Accepted Studenl Reception, there is customarily a strong showing of Studel Council representatives, willing to assist with whatevf needs to be done. Spirituality means something different to everyone. To some it's about the ability to find God in all things, to some it's doing service and helping those who may be unable to help themselves, to some its working to fix social justice issues. The great thing about that word “Spirituality” is that it has no set definition. Yes, the dictionary may define the word in a short sentence or two, but in reality it is a word that you must define through your own work and actions.

Just as it has done in past years, Prep set a theme foj the year, a message that would be an undertone ii everything Prep does, a phrase that is part of a greata message, one that each student can perceive different!)! This year that theme was “The City of God", taken from I song that we now end each mass with. Though these arj just a few simple words, they hold more meaning than the! length would suggest. These few words encourage ' to strive for something bigger then themselves. Some i this through the immersion trips over the summer ’ 1they led summer camps, built homes for the im|---or just gave people in need someone to talk to. i__took trips to Georgia where they protested the School < the Americas (SOA) and took a stand, letting it be (— r clear they would not stand for torture. Some even took . simpler approach and didn't give their voices, but gave J ' hearts, actively taking place in the masses, prayer r and lectures that are almost constantly going on J ' the Prep community.

The Arrupe Lecture Series hosted by the c., of Campus Ministry is another eye opening experience involves the hearts and minds of students, opening * eyes to poverty in the United States. It gives H another way to exigence spirituality while at Prep and each student a chance to, as Ghandi once wrote, “Be change you want to see in the world."

Spirituality at Prep drives the community to make a change, a difference not only in the world, but in jthemselves. This “Spirituality" is what makes the Prep community so unique. Prep focuses on developing men who are well rounded, and strive to make a difference in the community. There is no resource more important than men and women of conscience and compassion as we go out into the world and “Build the City of God.”

Prep students are walking on more then just the pavement of Grand and Warren. In fact, they are walking in style down the runway of Mayfair Farms, the location of Prep's annual fashion show. Every year many students hope to be in the select group of seniors chosen to model the latest fashions for the Prep Parents Association fashion shows. When this year's selection of students was made, it was a clear that this year's fashion show was on its way to

once again being in the Prep record books. Modelini everything from tuxedos to “Campus Shop” wear, thij year's show had styles that matched everyones tastes.

Although the fashion show proves to be fun for thesij Prep models, there is more to the fashion show then jus good food and modeling. Every year, the Parent! Association takes donations of gifts and prizes that ar<i raffled off to the guests in attendance. The money raised ii used to benefit the Parents Association's various functions Yet again, this Prep tradition raised over $50,000 througll the efforts of the generous Prep community and thei willingness to not only give, but to buy as well.

Although it is not always apparent, the work that ii done behind the scenes on behalf of the parents is whai really makes this a success. Parents spend countless hour counting tickets, wrapping gifts, and setting up for thq event. By the time the first guests arrive, the banquet hal that was once just tables and chairs is transformed into arj array of runways and prizes. The Prep Fashion Show is jusi another way of showing the dedication that students hava for the Prep community.

They give not only a part of not only themselves, but also their time to help make this Prep occasion a success. Without the seniors who put on the tuxedos and casual wear to model alongside the professionals, this event would not be such a success. It is the pinnacle of the some men's jareer here at Grand and Warren and only goes to show how every little bit of effort can go a long way in helping put the school.

The 2009-2010 school year was marked by numerous events that affected communities across the world. In December, Haiti suffered the effects of a drastic earthquake that affected the lives of millions of Haitians. The Mission Drive Committee immediately responded by offering a "dress-down” day for the Haiti Relief Fund. In one day, the entire school raised $4,800 dollars. In places as close to home as Hudson County and as far away as Haiti and
