It has been a tradition here at Saint Peter’s Prep to dedicate the P E TR E A N to a teacher w ho deserved this honor. This year w e considered many possibilities but w e fe lt w e should dedicate the 1976 P E TR E A N to a very special student o f this year’s graduating class, a person w ho has exem plified strength and bravery far beyond anyone w e have come to know during our four years here and throughout our lives.
Over the past four years, John Nealon has undergone numerous operations and treatments fo r cancer and has been hospitalized for many months. Yet John has shown an enormous amount o f courage; an example w e can all learn from. This courage has kept him going.
There is so much you can say about a person and friend w ho has taught us the real meaning o f life. Yet, w e hope through what w e 've said, his exam ple w ill be an inspiration for all o f us.
So, in repayment for his friendship, we, the editors, express our love and care by dedicating our w ork and the 1976 PE TR E AN to John Nealon.

1901 - 1975
On August 10, Father Shalloe, the heart o f The
Prep fo r so many years, died peacefully and ho lily
at M isericordia Hospital in the Bronx. He had been
living at the Jesuit In firm ary at Fordham fo r the
past several months and was taken to the hospital
a few days before his death fo r tests. He was
spared any physical suffering through his long illness and remained conscious and cheerful to the
very end. His body reposed in the Chapel at St.
Peter's and the funeral Mass o f the Resurrection was celebrated in St. Peter’s Church, w ith eighty
priests concelebrating. The eulogy, preached by Fr. Charles Dolan, S.J., who worked w ith Father Shalloe and succeeded him as moderator o f the A lum n i, is here printed, since there are so many w ho have w ritten expressing the ir regrets that they did no t know o f his death in tim e to attend his funeral. H e ‘ is buried in the Jesuit Cemetery at Auriesville, N .Y., the Shrine o f the Jesuit Martyrs o f N orth America. The fo llow ing week a Mass was celebrated at St. Michael's Church in Buffalo, N .Y., fo r the friends and relatives who were not
able to come to Jersey C ity. There were several hundred in attendance at tha t Mass in Father s home tow n. He is survived by fou r devoted sisters,
all living in the Buffa lo area.
A native o f Buffalo, Father Shalloe attended Holy
Fam ily School and Canisius High School. He
e n t e r e d t h e J e s u i t s i n 1 9 1 8 at
Woodstock-on-Hudson in Yonkers and continued
h is s tu d ie s a t S t. Andrew -on-H udson in
Poughkeepsie, receiving his A.B. and M.A. degrees.
A t this tim e his eyesight began to fail, due to a
tum or on the op tic nerve. His superiors sent him to Fordham Law School, since there was doubt that he would be able to continue his studies fo r
the priesthood. He received the degree o f Doctor of Law from Fordham in 1929 doing much o f the w ork towards the degree while teaching at F o rd h a m P rep . A n opera tion stayed the deterioration o f his eyesight and he continued his Theology Studies at Woodstock College and was ordained in 1932. His firs t assignment as a priest was to Grand Street, as assistant Dean at the new St. Peter's College. A fte r tw o years in this post he was named Principal o f St. Peter's Prep, remaining in tha t position from 1935 to 1943, when he was appointed Guidance Counsellor and Alum ni Director. The titles were a hinge fo r his thousand o th e r a c t iv it ie s and apostolates. Weddings, baptisms, Sunday sermons to the children. Communion Breakfasts, First Mass sermons, fu n d - ra is in g , correspondence to his former
students, First Friday Club, A lum ni Reunions,
always a great priest.
