Our Campus and Life at Shorter CollegeConceived in the mind of educator Luther Rice Gwaltney, the Chero-kee Baptist Female College opened for students in 1873. As pastor of Rome Baptist Church, now First Baptist, Gwaltney encouraged the active participation of church members in the establishment of a school for young ladies.

Because of the generous contributions of Alfred and Martha Shorter, in 1877 the college was renamed Shorter Col-lege. Originally, the college was housed in Victorian structures located on Shelton Hill, near Clock Tower Hill in downtown Rome.

By 1910 a new vision of a “Greater Shorter,” and contributions from the J. L. Bass family and the J. P. Cooper family made the relocation of the school to its current site a reality.

A significant innovation in the history of the college came in the early 1950s when school administrators and trustees made the decision to recruit the first male stu-dents. The “Girl’s Creed” had to be aban-doned, a dormitory for men constructed, new sports teams created, fraternities initiated, and very different rules of conduct established.

Under the leadership of President Randall Minor, the Georgia Baptist Conven-tion was given control over the election of trustees; new faculty were hired, many of whom are still familiar faces on campus; a new adminis-tration building and student center, a new library, and a fine arts building were constructed; and the first African-American student graduated from the college.

In the 1990s, Shorter continued to lead. International programs, the establishment of the School of Professional Programs in the Atlanta area, the creation of the Hugh Davis Center for Ministry Education and the offering of an MBA degree program in business represent only a few developments.

Under President Larry McSwain, Shorter celebrated its 125th an-niversary, dedicated the Winthrop-King Centre; converted the old

gymnasium into the Fitton Student Union; and constructed the Bass apartments, the J. Robert Eubanks Welcome Center and the Robert H. Ledbetter baseball field.

In 2003, U.S. News and World Report named Shorter one of the Best 25 South-ern Comprehensive Colleges and one of the Top 10 Best Buys among Southern Comprehensive Colleges.

Dr. Harold E. Newman was named Shorter’s president in January 2006 after having served as provost for 20 years and as interim president for one year. Under his leadership, the college continues to receive significant recognition. During the 2006-2007 academic year, Shorter was ranked for the sixth consecutive year among the South’s best comprehensive col-leges focusing on bachelor’s degrees.

Shorter also was ranked for the third consecutive year as a “Best Southeastern College” and a “Best Value College” by the Princeton Review; Shorter was one of 300 colleges nationwide selected for the Col-leges of Distinction guidebook.

Also, in the fall of 2006, Dr. Carmen Acevedo Butcher, scholar in residence and a graduate of Shorter College, was named the 2006 Georgia Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Ad-vancement and Support of Education.

Campaigns for new facilities and programs are planned, which include a new library wing, science facility, and performing arts center.

Shorter continues to pursue its mission to inspire students to make commitments to lifelong learn-ing, personal spiritual values, responsible citizenship, community and societal leadership and global awareness.

The Mission of Shorter College is to provide quality higher educa-tion, enabling and encouraging student commitment to active life-long learning, personal spiritual values, responsible citizenship, and community and societal leadership in a global context.

Dear Hawk Family:

It is my great pleasure to welcome in another exciting season of Shorter College track and field.

A year has passed since last season, and our Hawks and Lady Hawks athletic teams have completed what is arguably the best year in the history of Shorter College Athletics. As always, our goal is for Shorter to be recognized as an outstanding option for student-athletes who are looking for academic excellence, spiritual growth, and a challenging athletic experience.

In conjunction with this goal, we have been blessed with the best in both student-athletes and coaches; whether in competition, in the classroom or in the community.

During the past year, thirteen of our teams finished the year in the NAIA Top-25 for their respective sport, and at the conclusion of the year, Shorter placed 33rd in the nation out of nearly 300 NAIA mem-ber schools in the NACDA Director’s Cup.

In addition, we graduated a record number of student-athletes and celebrated our first team national championship. Most importantly, we continued to see great growth among both our coaches and athlet-ics in their Christian walk of faith. In just its fourth year, our football program won its first-ever conference championship and earned its first berth into the NAIA National Playoffs. We also saw our highly respected head football coach, Phil Jones, receive the prestigious FCA National Coach of the Year Award.

Women’s basketball player Whitni Tucker was named the national winner of the Emil S. Liston Award, an annual award presented by the NAIA and Daktronics recognizing a male and female junior basketball player based on scholarship, character and playing ability.

Softball standout Becca Thomas garnered the SSAC’s most prestigious honor, the 2008-2009 SSAC Female Honor Student-Athlete of the Year. Along with men’s soccer player Kyle Timberlake, Becca was also honored as one of Shorter’s two Student-Athletes of the Year.

Justyna Mudy won our second individual national championship in the last two years and became the first Lady Hawk to ever win a national championship.

Our student-athletes and coaches continued to shine recording all-time highs in the following areas: 75 graduating seniors, 74 all-academic and all-conference selections, 16 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, six conference championships and one national championship and eight Coach of the Year selections. What a year!

While we are proud of what has accomplished in the 2008-2009 school year, both our coaches and student-athletes are even more excited about what the future may bring.

The growth and accomplishments of the past decade have put this program in position to move into the most successful era ever of Shorter Ath-letics. For that to happen, it will require a great effort on all of our parts as well as a tremendous amount of teamwork. It will also take great faith, unbelievable enthusiasm and a champion’s perseverance. Nonetheless, I am confident it can be done.

We appreciate your continued support and we look forward to another exciting year in 2009-2010.

Go Hawks!

Head Coach, Scott Byrd2009 Mid-South Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track Coach of the Year

In just three short seasons at Shorter College, head coach Scott Byrd has developed the Hawk and Lady Hawk track and field programs into national powers.

During Byrd’s tenure, Shorter has won two individual national championships and in 2009, saw the men and women post top-ten finishes at the NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Shorter placed 17 athletes on the All-America teams after the Hawks captured fifth-place and the Lady Hawks seventh-place at the season-ending meet.

Also in 2009, Byrd was named the Mid-South Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track Coach of the Year, sweeping the honors after guiding the Hawks to their second consecutive Mid-South title and helping the Lady Hawks to their first-ever such crown. At the conference meet, Shorter’s athletes com-bined to win 24 individual event titles, setting new conference records in each of those events. The men broke 11 former event marks while the women toppled 13.

Four Lady Hawks - K’Ianca Dupree (100, 200), Jessica Coons (100 hurdles, 400 hurdles), Ashlie Stewartson (400, long jump) and Justyna Mudy (3,000, 10,000) - currently hold a pair of Mid-South

Conference records.

Byrd coaches the 400 meters, 4x400 relay teams, 100/110 meter hurdles and the 400 intermediate hurdles.

Byrd quickly planted the seed for success upon his arrival to the Hill in 2006. Despite being a young program, Shorter track and field has accom-plished great things in its first few years:

•Back-to-backMid-SouthMen’sOutdoorchampionships(2008,2009) •First-everMid-SouthWomen’sOutdoorchampionship(2009) •Twoindividualnationalchampions(MontagiousBrown[2008,indoorhighjump]andJustynaMudy[2009,3ksteeplechase]) •Over30All-Conferenceathletes •Over30NAIAAll-Americans •Over40nationalqualifiers •TwoDaktronicsNAIAScholar-Athletes •OneNAIAnationalrecord(JustynaMudy,2009)

Byrd came to Shorter in 2006 from Velocity Sports, where he was an assistant head coach for Team Velocity. He is a USAW Club Coach and USAW Sports Performance certified.

In 1980, he was the national collegiate power lifting champion and coached OTC from 1994-1996. He served as an IDEA Certified Trainer from 1987-2000 and is a professional member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Byrd coached 12 school-age national champion athletes including three gold medalists, four silver medalists and one bronze medalist. He guided a three-member competition team that won third place nationally and also coached three junior national athletes, including one silver medalist.

Byrd graduated from Fayette County High School in 1979 after lettering all four years in varsity football and varsity track. He earned his colle-giate degree from Jacksonville State University in 1985.

Head Cross Country Coach, Jay StephensonThree-time Southern States Athletic Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year

Coach Jay Stephenson enters his fourth year as Shorter College head cross country coach, and also serves as the middle distance and distance coach for Shorter’s track team.

Stephenson was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He is a USATF certified Level 1 track and field coach.

During the past three seasons, the men’s cross country team has experienced increasing success culminat-ing in a 13th place finish at 2008 Cross Country Nationals. At the meet, two athletes earned All-Amer-ican status. On the women’s side, Justyna Mudy placed 3rd (5k - 17:06) and on the men’s side, Jared Carson placed 24th (8k - 25:06).

At the 2009 Outdoor Track and Field Nationals meet, the men’s team placed 5th and the women’s team placed 7th. The men’s and women’s track and field team has had 30 All-Americans in the short history of the program.

At the 2009 Track and Field Championships, Stephenson led freshman Justyna Mudy to a 1st place fin-ish in the 3,000m steeple chase. Her time of 10:12.31 was a new NAIA record and the performance earned the honor of Women’s Most Out-standing Performance. Stephenson also led seniors Martin Hernandez and Jared Carson to All-America status in the marathon and 10k, respec-tively.

Stephenson coached the men’s cross country team to back-to-back SSAC championships in 2007 and 2008 where they scored a perfect 15 points. In 2008, the women’s team came in 2nd by only 2 points.

The men’s track and field team also won back-to-back Mid-South Conference titles in 2008 and 2009. The women’s team won the Mid-South Conference title in 2009. The combined men’s and women’s teams had 25 individual wins in 2009 and 21 individual wins in 2008.

Stephenson also had four Academic All-Conference athletes and one Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2008-2009.

In 2008, Stephenson completed his Masters of Science in Exercise Science from Georgia State University. While pursuing his post-graduate stud-ies, he was the graduate assistant for the Berry College cross country team. He also holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Sports Marketing from Berry College.

As an athlete, Stephenson was a three time All-American at Berry College, twice in the 3000m steeplechase and once in cross country.

Stephenson holds personal bests of 14:18 for 5k, 29:43 for 10k, 8:53 for the 3k steeplechase and 4:12 for the mile. In 2005, Stephenson was the USATF Club Track and Field National Champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Assistant Coaches

Tom Saint begins his third year with the Shorter College track and field program, following his position as assistant jumps coach for eighteen years at Division I Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. During that time, his athletes broke more than twenty school records in twelve different events. At least one record still stands today.

Saint spent six years in Mexico as a coach for both the State University of Tamaulipas and the Depart-ment of Sports of the State of Tamaulipas. He coached high school and college athletes in all different events and coached numerous state champions at all levels, many of whom became national qualifiers. Those athletes accomplished the following: nine pre-national (regional) champions, four national junior champions and two national junior record holders, seven all-Mexico athletes (top three finishers) and one eight event national (open) champion over five years (three time women’s long jump national champion and five time women’s triple jump national champion).

The same athlete was a four time national collegiate champion in the women’s long jump and a four time national collegiate champion in the women’s triple jump. She was an all-Mexico collegiate in the 100 meters, a Penn Relay’s collegiate triple jump champion, a Penn Relay’s open invitational triple jump finalist, and the Mexican national record holder in the women’s triple jump.

Both teams qualify for Vancouver; Mudy captures national title

Shorter’s Justyna Mudy added an NAIA Cross Country national championship to her 3,000 meter steeplechase national crown. Mudy took the cross country championship in 17:30, topping the field by an astounding 21 seconds.

SHORTER COLLEGE’S CROSS country programs continue to make positive strides towards national prominence. The 2009 season presented arguably the best evidence of that fact, to date.

For the first time ever, both the men and women’s teams swept the Southern States Athletic Conference titles and advanced to the NAIA Cross Country National Championships in Vancouver, Wash., where the Hawks – it was their third straight trip to the national meet – fin-ished 18th overall and the Lady Hawks made a splash in their inaugural appearance with a solid 19th-place result.

Adding to the flavor of the event for Shorter was sophomore Justyna Mudy, who added another national championship to her resume with a first-place individual finish.

“I definitely think that any time you have both men’s and women’s program in the national Top 20, it shows that we are doing things right,” said head coach Jay Stephenson, who was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the third straight season. “The ladies have taken a big step forward just like the guys did. Having to coach two teams – it just didn’t feel right going with just one of them. “This time it felt nice to travel with everyone.”

Mudy’s performance came on the heels of her first national title effort, one that came during the 2009 outdoor track season last May.

The redshirt sophomore from Poland won the 3,000-meter steeplechase national championship at the NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in St. Louis, Mo., Shorter’s first-ever female individual national championship. In the process, Mudy shattered the NAIA record for the event – she was the only athlete, male or female, in any event to set a new record – en route to being named the National Championship’s Most Outstanding Performer.

Mudy, now a four-time NAIA All-American, is one of three key 2010 returnees who aspire to return to the national meet next fall.

Rounding out Shorter’s top five on the women’s side at the national meet included sophomore Sarah Massey, senior Amy Worthy, junior Kaitlin Shaw and freshman Paulina Sarat.

Next year’s return of the core of this season’s squad gives Stephenson an optimistic outlook, as does the success he’s having during the recruiting process that could make the Lady Hawks even stronger.

“Most of the runners I’ve recruited have verbally committed,” he said. “We’re excited about it.”

Stephenson is just as excited about what’s ahead for the Hawks, who despite having a number of new faces on the roster, continued the pro-gram’s winning tradition. All but two of the team’s runners will return next year.

Pacing the Hawks in Vancouver was freshman Eliud Ng’etich, who finished 32nd overall at the men’s national race. Joining Ng’etich as Shorter’s top five runners at the meet were junior Steven Rich, fresh-man Nicolas Toscau, senior Jerad Godsave and freshman Doug Kalm-bach.

“You always have lingering thoughts about the ‘what ifs,’ wondering if you did things right or if you could have done anything better,” said Stephenson. “But all in all, it was a very positive experience.”

That positive experience, Stephenson believes, will transfer to the hard running surface, where several of the Shorter runners have already proven themselves.

“You’ve got to run the entire year to be successful,” Stephenson said. “[Runningtrack]isfunforus. There’saneventforeveryone–foreachpersonality and each ability. With what the track team has back and with the cross country runners coming off a great season, I think we have a shot at being at the top.”

Shorter College is proud to be “A Christian College Committed to Excellence in Educa-tion.” Through our traditional programs in Rome and our adult-degree classes in Atlanta and Rome, Shorter is a place where the mind and spirit intersect through intentional study and dialogue.

Recent years have brought growing recognition for our successes as an educational institu-tion. In 2007, for the seventh consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report ranked Shorter among the South’s top baccalaureate colleges. We are also part of the Princeton Review’s lists as a “Best Southeastern College” and a “Best Value College.”

Our faculty, staff, administration, Board of Trustees, and Board of Visitors are work-ing hard to ensure that the college’s brightest days are ahead. I encourage you to become involved in Shorter College’s exciting future.

Sincerely,

Dr. Harold E. Newman, President

Dr. Harold E. Newman became Shorter College’s 18th president on January 26, 2006. Dr. Newman brought extensive knowledge of and a deep love for Shorter College to his presidency.

He served the college as provost for 20 years under four presidents and had served as interim president since January 1, 2005.

A classically trained musician, Dr. Newman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Furman University, a Master of Church Music in piano performance from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

There, he majored in curriculum and instruction with collaterals in higher education and educa-tional administration and supervision.

Dr. Newman and his wife, Brenda, have two grown daughters: Cindy and Kathy.

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participa-tion in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process.

The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conference and regional structure, and the benefits of membership in a national associa-tion.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, propor-tionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the over-all participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative change

The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 14 regions, the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are com-mitted to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, reponsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
