Presidents Letter Today is May 1, May Day! I know

that most of you wont read this until nearthe end of May but today is today.

I remember as a student in parochialschool May 1 was the spring event whenwe honored the Virgin Mary, or MotherMary and our own mothers.

It seems that Mothers Day is thismonth and for many families there will

be one child who may want to but wontbe able to say the simple message,Happy Mothers Day. To each mothermay we at the Florida SIDS Allianceextend a warm and sincere HappyMothers Day. May this message conveywith it the genuine wish of an innocentchild.

I wanted to make each of you awareof our fiscal year 2011 strategic priority,to renew the successful movement of theBack to Sleep Campaign. The campaignsignificantly reduced by the incidence ofSIDS. We know that, for whateverreason, the practice of safe back sleep isstill less than one hundred percent.

We are currently planning a veryspecial train the trainer event to train ateam of committed volunteers who will beprepared to conduct five to twenty trainingsessions over the current year. We areplanning this event for Fall 2010 andencourage each of you to think aboutwhether you would like to join the team! This will be a single focus commitmentto get the word out that placing infantson their back will save infants lives.

This event will be a two day event, including both Friday evening and all daySaturday. We will be taking applicationswithin the next month. The application willbe available on our web site as well as arequest from any executive boardmember. The team will be limited totwenty and will be an all expense paidevent. The successful participant will be

certified by the Florida SIDS Alliance asa Trainer in Safe Infant Practices.Who should attend? You should

consider this training if you can make acommitment to implement this trainingto between five and twenty groups over aone year period. If you would like to bringabout a change in infant practices thatwill reduce the incidence of SIDS as wellas improve the health of infants, youshould consider applying to attend. Thistraining can be presented to groups suchas parent organizations, mothers groups, childcare providers, Rotary and other civicgroups, health professionals, highschools, Lamaze classes, communityand health education programs, andemployee wellness and educationprograms. If you are already an active

member of any of the above groups, yhave an opportunity to impact tmembers of your group with thmessage.

If you have any interest please let know this does not commit you to atteat this time; however, it will help us pla successful workshop.

    As the summer season approache

we have yet another holiday that is vesignificant. Fathers Day is June 20. Fmany fathers, time with their childrenmore limited because of work. I knotimes are changing and the same issuare present with working mothers. Thmakes the parent holidays even mospecial. As a father I know both MotheDay and Fathers Day brings much joyme from the personal experience and homuch it means to my wife. I do know thmixed with all the positive feelings I muadmit that I still deal with the sadness knowing that one of my children will longer wish us the simple Happy PareDay.

So each of you fathers, HapFathers Day and to all you mothershope you had a joyous Mothers Day.

A special thanks goes out to SIDSfamilies in the State that participated inSIDS events occurring in the State ofFlorida. Two very important activities inMarch both have spread the awareness

of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS) and the importance of the Backto Sleep message. Parents, grandparents, and SIDS siblingsparticipated in the fundraisers in CentralFlorida and in Palm Beach county.

The Annual Golf Tournament washeld in Seminole county at the AlaquaCountry Club and was very successfulat bringing families together to interactwith the golfers. Five SIDS families either

Caffeine intake during pregnancy, late miscarriage and stillbirth

Caffeine is a commonly consumed drugduring pregnancy with the potential to affectthe developing fetus. Findings from previousstudies have shown inconsistent results. Werecruited a cohort of 2,643 pregnant women, aged 18-45 years, attending two UKmaternity units between 8 and 12 weeksgestation from September 2003 to June2006. We used a validated tool to assesscaffeine intake at different stages ofpregnancy and related this to latemiscarriage and stillbirth, adjusting forconfounders, including salivary cotinine asa biomarker of smoking status. There was a

strong association between caffeine intakein the first trimester and subsequent latemiscarriage and stillbirth, adjusting forconfounders. Women whose pregnanciesresulted in late miscarriage or stillbirth hadhigher caffeine intakes (geometric mean =145 mg/day; 95% CI: 85-249) than those withlive births (103 mg/day; 95% CI: 98-108).Compared to those consuming < 100 mg/day, odds ratios increased to 2.2 (95% CI:0.7-7.1) for 100-199 mg/day, 1.7 (0.4-7.1) for200-299 mg/day, and 5.1 (1.6-16.4) for 300+mg/day (P (trend) = 0.004). Greater caffeineintake is associated with increases in latemiscarriage and stillbirth. Despite remaininguncertainty in the strength of association, ourstudy strengthens the observational evidence

base on which current guidance is founded.

Qualitative Analysis of Beliefsand Perceptions about SuddenInfant Death Syndrome inAfrican-American Mothers:Implications for Safe SleepRecommendations

J Pediatr. 2010 Mar 18. [Epub ahead of print]Goldberg Center for Community Pediatric Health,

Childrens National Medical Center,Washington, DC; Department of Pediatrics,George Washington University School of

Medicine and Health Sciences, Washington, DC.

First Candle is pleased to share with you the following

abstracts for recently-published research studies:OBJECTIVE: To investigate, by usiqualitative methods, perceptions abosudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) African-American parents and how theinfluence decisions. STUDY DESIGN: Eighthree mothers participated in focus grouor individual interviews. Interviews probreasons for decisions about infant sleenvironment and influences affecting thedecisions. Data were coded, and themwere developed and revised in an iteratimanner as patterns became more appareRESULTS: Themes included lack plausibility, randomness, and vigilance. Mamothers believed that the link between SIDand sleep position was implausible. Becauthe cause of SIDS was unknown, they dnot understand how certain behaviors coube defined as risk factors. This confusion wreinforced by perceived inconsistency in trecommendations. Most mothers believthat SIDS occurred randomly (Gods wiand that the only way to prevent it w

vigilance.CONCLUSIONS: Many African-Americmothers may not understand the connectibetween SIDS and sleep behaviors or beliethat behavior (other than vigilance) cannaffect risk. These beliefs, if acted on, maffect rates of safe sleep practices. Effoto explain a plausible link between SIDS asafe sleep recommendations and to improconsistency of the message may resultincreased adherence to therecommendations.

SIDS remains the number one kilof infants from one month to one yearage. Along with placing the infant onfirm, flat mattress, maintaining a smofree environment, and not over heatior over wrapping the infant, the messaof SIDS prevention was given to eawalker.
