I have been covering sports in St. Landry Parish since 1996 and I have met hundreds of great coaches and players who gave all they had to their sport.

I have also sat in the stands next to fans who berate and cuss everything decision the coach makes and every mistake the athlete had.

This poem I found several years ago explains how a parent feels when they hear fans curse at their son or daughter:

Please Don’t Curse The Boy Down There

Please don't curse the boy down there.

He is my son, you see. He's only a boy, you know and

means a lot to me. I did not raise my son, Sports

Fan, For you to call him names.

He may not be a superstar,But it's really just a game. Please don't curse the boys

down there. They do the best they can. They never tried to lose a

game.They're boys - and you're a

man.The game belongs to them,

you see,And you are just a guest. They do not need a fan like

you,They need the very best.If you have nothing nice to

say,Please leave the boys alone. And if you can't enjoy the

game,Then why don't you stay

home?So please don't curse the boys

down there,Each one's his parent's son.And win or lose, or tie, you seeTo us they're number one!!

A tough non-district schedule

will test Eunice early on, but hopefully it will help prepare the Bobcats for another district title and a run in the Class 3-A playoffs.

After struggling early in the season Eunice earned the Dis-trict 3-4A title and downed John McDonogh 40-12 in the first round of the playoffs before fall-ing to Redemptorist, 53-27 to finish last season at 7-5.

With just three starters re-turning on offense and four on defense, the Bobcats will have plenty of new faces on both sides of the ball.

“Our goal every year is to get better every week, try to com-pete for the district champion-ship,” head coach Paul Trosclair said.

“We always try to get to the playoffs playing our best foot-ball of the season.”

The only returning starter on the offensive line is senior Alex Toepher (6-1, 230) with seniors Lathan Prudhomme (5-10, 195), Jonathan Tucker (6-0, 200), Trent Vidrine (5-11, 215,) and Damien Morgan (6-0, 235) step-ping up into starting roles this season.

Senior tight end Courtney Clarkson (6-0, 235) and re-ceiver Trace Trosclair (6-0, 175) will be the main targets for new starting quarterback senior Zac Person (6-0, 175).

Person underwent ACL sur-

gery in the off-season and is coming off an elbow injury suf-fered in American Legion base-ball this summer.

Behind Person are junior Kourt Deshotel and sophomore Trenon Trosclair, both who played in the spring game.

“We know we have three guys who can play quarterback,” the

coach said. “I think we will be all right

there.”In the backfield is a pair of

talented running backs with se-niors Jonas Edwards (5-9, 190) and Jeremy Darby (5-10, 205) - both expected to carry the load in the Bobcats’ Wing-T offense.

Senior linebacker Tre Godfrey and defensive coordinator Bruce Cox are expecting good results from the Bobcat defense this season.

We are expecting Jonas to produce,” Trosclair said.

“In our offense, he is the guy who will get the ball the most.”

Last season, the Bobcats rushed for 2,715 yards and passed for 1,072 yards under the direction of quarterback Stuart Turner (1,019 yards passing and 10 touchdowns), running back Trey Ceasar (1,358 yards, 19 TDs), and receiver/returner/defensive back Tharold Simon (661 yards receiving).

The defense will be led by senior linebackers Vondray Vallere (6-1, 210) and Trey God-frey (5-10, 210).

Vallare, an all-district per-former, racked up 110 tackles, nine for loss, three sacks and one interception. Godfrey had 100 tackles last season and is expected to perform well again this season.

Damian Morgan (6-0, 240, Sr.) returns at defensive tackle

and will be a leader up front. Defensive back Trace Tro-

sclair is the team’s lone returner in the secondary.

Projected new starters include defensive backs Anthony Powell (5-1, 170, Sr.), Cade Blanchard (5-10, 185, Sr.) and Travis Woods (6-0, 180, Jr.) along with defen-sive linemen Phillip Lemelle (5-10, 230, Sr.), Clarkson and Trey Courville (6-0, 2-5, Jr.)

“We have some quality ath-letes coming back,” the coach said of his team.

“They didn’t get to play as much last year because we had such a large group of seniors.”

After facing Beau Chene in the St. Landry Parish jamboree on Aug. 27, the Bobcats open the regular season at home against Opelousas High on Sept. 3.

Eunice will face Jennings, Lafayette, Westgate and Notre Dame in non-district clashes.

“Even if we play well, there may be some games we still struggle in,” he said. “But that will harden us for down the

road.”The Bobcats’ run to defend

the District 3-4A title will in-clude battles against Westlake, Iowa, Northwest, Crowley and Church Point.

After a 1-4 start last season, the Bocbats went on a 5-0 run to win district.

“We hope to get ourselves into position again to win an-other district championship,” the coach said. “Our schedule is tough and that could cause some problems.

“But we had just come off two 11-wins seasons and it was hard to get teams to play us,” Trosclair said. “So we ended up with a schedule for two years. With our young team. we may struggle early.

“If we come together as a team by midseason I think we can compete for the district title,” Trosclair said. “Crowley and Iowa are both supposed to be very good this year, but we have both of them at home.”

OPELOUSAS - Can this be the year that the Opelousas High School Tigers turn the cor-ner?

That’s the hope of head foot-ball coach Mickey Autrey as he begins his third year at the helm of the largest school in St. Landry Parish.

In 2009, the Tigers finished with an overall mark of 2-8, with a District 6-4A mark of 2-4. Actually, the 2-4 record in dis-trict play was a step up for the program, which has struggled to post wins over the past several years.

There may be hope of winning more than two games in 2010, thanks to the return of 17 start-ers from last year. But, in order to move the program forward, Autrey must overcome a losing mentality that has plagued the Tigers over the past several sea-sons.

There is experienced tal-ent on the offensive side of the football, according to the head coach. That is especially true at the skill positions. Senior Ja-mal Rainey (5-11, 170) is back at quarterback to lead the Mul-tiple I attack.

Returning with Rainey are se-nior tailback Quentin Malveaux (5-9, 175) and senior fullback David Houser (5-9, 180).

Junior Ocean Grice (5-7, 140) will provide additional speed in the backfield.

The wide receiver corps re-turns intact from last season. They are junior tight end Alex Eaglin (6-0, 175), senior split end Amad Redding (6-0, 165), and senior flanker McKenzie Porter (5-11, 170).

Three offensive linemen re-turn as starters in senior guards Roland Simmons (6-1, 185) and James Lewis (6-1, 255), along with senior right tackle Dylan Richard (6-5, 330).

Probable new starters along the line are junior Caleb Rice (5-11, 240) at tackle and sopho-more Aaron David (6-0, 295) at center.

On offense, Autrey believes that the Tigers must become a more balanced attack in regard to the running game and the passing attack.

On defense, the Tigers have moved to a 4-3 scheme. The most experienced area of the de-fensive unit will be the second-ary where Porter, Redding, and Rainey will join junior corner-back Rashaun Pitre (5-8, 155)

as returning starters. At linebacker, the lone return-

ing starter is senior Mark Bar-tholomew (5-10, 175).

He’ll be joined by new start-ers Sherman Ford (5-7, 160), a junior, and sophomore Tremaine Sonnier (6-0, 225).

There will a mix of experi-ence and inexperience along the defensive front wall. Seniors Tevin Brown (6-1, 165) and Don-ald Brooks (5-11, 240) return as starters at end and tackle, re-spectively. Roland Simmons, at end, and David Freeman (5-11, 275), at tackle, will be the new starters.

Special teams should be solid hands with the return of Da-vid Houser. Houser will punt, kick, and kickoff for the Tigers. Houser made four of five field goals last season. A key element for Houser is the return of deep snapper Caleb Rice.

Autrey has a concern with the number of players that are two-way starters. “Several of

our younger players will need to step up to provide needed depth at key positions to give our starters some rest,” commented Autrey. “We can’t afford injuries to our key players as we do not

have large numbers.”The Tigers will be compet-

ing against Northside, Breaux Bridge, Teurlings Catholic, Ce-cilia, St. Martinville, and Beau Chene for District 6-4A honors.

Bulldogs expecting another strong seasonBy Tom [email protected]

JENNINGS - The Bulldogs rolled to an impressive 12-1 fin-ish last season and Jennings is poised for another strong run this season with 15 returning starters.

The Bulldogs’ offense is led by senior quarterback Bryson Abraham (5-11, 180) along with senior running backs Davon-drick Phillips (5-9, 180) and Mi-chael Wildridge (5-7, 180). Phil-

lips gained 1,460 yards on 200 carries with 22 touchdowns last season.

The offensive line is anchored by seniors left guard Spencer Marceaux (6-1, 240), center Billy Myers (6-1, 335) and right tackle Jacob Gwinn (6-0, 225). Sophomore Andrew Lamb (5-8, 210) and senior Noah Myers (6-4, 240) could both see action at the right guard spot.

Junior Michael Ringuet (6-4, 240) will start the season at left tackle.

Junior Trey Richardson (5-9, 180) will play flanker for the Bulldogs.

The Jennings defense returns six starters including All-Dis-trict defensive back Aaron Per-kins (5-10, 170, Sr.), who inter-cepted five passes last season.

The defensive front is led by senior defensive ends Casey Vil-lenueva (6-0, 190) and Charles Cassidy (5-10, 175) along with junior D.J. Phillips (5-10, 225, Jr.) and sophomore Payton Phelps (6-1, 211).

The linebackers will be Mil-ton Hall (5-10, 190, Jr.) and Alex Daigle (5-10, 190, Jr.).

The Bulldog secondary in-cludes Dylan Lavergne (5-10, 175, Jr.), Keagan Kratzer (5-9, 185, Sr.), Trye Davis (6-0, 190, Sr.) and Delonte Madden (5-10, 160, Sr.).

Jennings opens the season with three trips to Crowley, Eunice and Iowa before facing

Rosepine for homecoming on Sept. 24.

The Bulldogs entertain Li-vonia before beginning district play at home against Sam Hous-ton.

A visit to the St. Louis Saints is followed by home games against DeRidder and Port Al-len.

Jennings closes the regular season at Washington-Marion.

Jonas Edwards, left, is expected to be the main running threat for the Bobcats this season.

LAFAYETTE – Head coach Mark Barousse experienced a long season in 2009 as the La-fayette High Lions finished with a 3-7 record.

Nine of 2009’s starters return for Barousse this season, and that could bode well for the Li-ons, who last made the state playoffs in 2007.

On the downside, there are just two returning starters on the defensive side of the foot-ball.

Among returning offensive starters is senior quarterback Jordan Romero (6-1, 170).

Experience at quarterback

will be important in the Lions’ Run `n’ Shoot offense.

Junior Ray Thompson (6-0, 195) will be the running back, with senior Ross Kelly (5-9, 155)and junior Chaz Boyer at split back (5-9, 165).

Seniors Michael Lewis (5-9, 160) and Adam Savoie (5-8, 165) are the wide receivers, with Boyer.

Only Lewis was not a 2009 starter.

Four offensive linemen re-turn as starters. They are se-nior guard Tony Martin (6’, 240 lbs.), junior tackle Colby Lacour (5-11, 225), senior tackle Izahia Carter (6-3, 265), and senior center Hunter Bonvallain (5-10, 205).

The lone new starter is senior guard Tyler Gooden (6-1, 295).

The lone returning defensive starters for the Lions are senior strong safety Aaron Verrett (5-9”, 175 lbs.) and junior lineman Jarvis Mason (5’9, 220).

Joining Mason on the front line will be junior Stephen Mo-rella (6-1, 235), junior Ryan Romero (5-10, 230), and senior Vuth Chanthangsy (5-10, 230).

Verrett will be joined by ju-nior free safety Tommy Jackson (6-0, 160) in the deep secondary.

Senior Josh Arenibas (6-0, 170) and sophomore Damien Morgan (6-1, 165) are slated to be the cornerbacks.

New starters at linebacker are senior Josh Trisler (5-8,

185), junior Joseph Provost (6-0, 180), and sophomore Devin An-drus (6-0, 195).

Barousse will need to find a new punter/kicker after losing Seth Sebastian to graduation.

The Lions finished 1-3 in Dis-trict 4-5A in 2009. Lafayette High will be competing against LaGrange, Barbe, Acadiana, and Sulphur for district honors.

The Eunice HIgh linebackers are from left, Coleman Mouille, Tre Godfrey, Martin Mahon and Tyler Price.

NEW IBERIA – The Westgate High Tigers are looking to im-prove on last year’s 8-5 record thanks to a return of ten start-ers.

Head coach Brian Fine, who has a career record of 125-86, hopes to lead his team into the 5A playoffs where it advanced to the quarterfinals in 2009.

Offensively, the Tigers return six starters from 2009. Lead-ing the way are junior running backs Brandon Malveaux (6-0, 190.) and D’nerius Antoine (6-0, 195).

They will be supported by three returning offensive line-men in senior center Trey Pel-lerin (5-8, 195), junior guard Trey Cooks (5-10, 265), and se-nior tight end Corey Fontenette (6-0, 190).

The other returning starter is senior wide receiver Fred Jo-seph (5-9, 165).

The remainder of the offen-sive line will consist of sopho-

more guard Josh Boutte (6-5, 285), senior tackles Karl Bever-ly (6-0, 200), and Travis Layne (6-0, 220).

Another new starter is senior wide receiver Aaron Gray (6-0, 165).

One of the keys for the Tigers this season will be the play of a new quarterback - senior Ken-drick Porter (6-0, 180).

“Offensively, we have some key personnel returning, but will have to develop at quarter-back and up front,” explained Coach Fine.

The Tigers will have to devel-op a number of new defensive starters, according to Fine.

They will, however, return two starters at linebacker. They are senior Tyler Jackson (5-9, 180) and junior Eugene Living-son (5-9, 190). Those two will be joined by Bryson Broussard (5-8, 175), a sophomore.

Along the defensive front, the lone returning starter is junior Duvall Jackson (6-2, 225) at end.

New starters are junior end

Edward Brown (6-1, 205) and junior tackles Matthew Allen (6-4, 235) and Tony Phothisane (6-0, 228).

The secondary is led by senior Kendrick Porter at safety.

Rounding out the secondary are senior Jeremy Savoy (5-8, 170), junior D’nerius Antoine, and sophomore Tyland Gregiore (6-0, 190).

“The growth and develop-ment of the defensive unit will be a big factor in how competi-tive we can be,” Fine said.

The Tigers will also need to find a kicker and a punter after the departure of Seigan Verge-nal, who handled both duties in the past.

Westgate opens the sea-son with road trips to Breaux Bridge, St. James and Arch-bishop Shaw.

The Tigers entertain Eunice High on Sept. 23 in their first of four home games.

Westgate then faces North-side, Carencro and New Iberia.

The Tigers close out the regu-lar season on the road against

St. Thomas More and Comeaux.

CROWLEY – Coach Lewis Cook lost some outstanding tal-ent from last year’s Class 3A State Championship squad.

But don’t expect the Notre Dame Pioneers to fall out of state title contention in 2010. There is talent waiting to step in to fill the holes left by gradu-ation, and Coach Cook and his staff know how to develop that talent.

The Pioneers, who won the state title with a 14-7 victory over Parkview Baptist last De-cember, lost 11 starters to grad-uation from a team that finished 15-0 on the season.

On defense, the Pioneers return seven starters from a record-setting defensive unit. Cook must replace All-State linebacker D.J. Welter and All-State lineman Jacob Molbert as well as linebacker Hunter Sto-ver, a UL-Lafayette signee.

Seniors Fruge (5-10, 180) and Rothermel (6-2, 200) return at outside linebacker and middle linebacker, respectively. They will be joined in the three-man linebacker corps by new starter - junior Connor Gross (5-9, 170).

The starting secondary re-turns intact from 2009. The all-senior group includes cor-nerbacks Luke Bourgeois (5-7, 165.) and Dylan Faul (6-0, 160), free safety Stoma (6-1, 170), and strong safety Kevin Johnson (5-9, 190). The major losses on defense come along the front line, where only senior tackle O’Dazio Thomas (6-0, 230) re-turns as a starter.

Projected new starters along the line are senior ends Dylan Daigle (6-1, 190) and Jerry Menard (5-11, 185), and junior tackle Paul LaCroix (6-1, 200).

On offense, the loss of Ryan Leonards at quarterback will be softened by the switch of junior Stu Cook (5-9, 185) to quarter-back from tailback.

Cook does have experience at the position, having three starts at quarterback in past seasons.

The move of Cook to quarter-back means that senior Logan Venable (5-9, 170) takes over at tailback, a spot he shared with Stu Cook last season.

Senior Luke Besse (5-10, 185) is the new starter at fullback.

The receiver corps returns two of three starters from 2009. They are senior wide receiver Zac D’Aquin 6-2, 165) and junior tight end Jacob Middleton (6-0, 210).

The new starter at split end is senior Drew Trahan (5-9, 155).

Along the offensive line, only

senior guard Pete Pettijean (6-1, 260) returns as a starter.

New starters for the Pioneers include senior guard Donald Cormier (6-2, 295), senior cen-ter Brannon Trahan (5-10, 200), and junior tackles Cole Reiners (6-1, 220) and Luke Immel (6-0, 220).

The Pioneers dominated the District 5-3A last season. It waits to be seen if North Vermil-ion, Abbeville, Kaplan, Erath, and Rayne can mount a seri-ous challenge to the Pioneers

in 2010. Notre Dame will host Teurlings, Breaux Bridge, and St. Louis, with road trips to Eu-nice (Oct. 1) and Christian Life of Baton Rouge.

Westlake working to improve from 5-6 finishBy John BursonSports Writer

WESTLAKE – After a dis-appointing campaign in 2009, head coach Max Caldarera hopes the return of 16 starters will result in a rebound season for the Westlake High Rams in 2010.

The Rams finished with a 5-6 overall record, although they did earn a third-place finish in District 4-3A with a 3-2 mark.

A state playoff berth ended in an opening round loss to Pat-terson.

In 2010, the Rams’ defensive unit returns eight starters from 2009. Topping the list are first-team All-District junior strong safety Justin Nordberg (5-9, 165) and first-team All-District defensive end Chase Schuck (6-3, 250).

Other returning starters in-clude junior outside linebacker Zack Vincent (6-0, 170), senior inside linebacker Alex Hardy (5-11, 190), and junior inside linebacker Devin Eaglin (5-10, 210).

A new starter in the four line-backer corps will be senior Don-ald Shillow (5-9, 170).

Schuck heads the defensive line at end, but the other end appears up for grabs going into fall practices.

The new starter at nose guard is senior Trent Toups (5-10, 215).

Nordberg leads the second-ary and is joined by senior Tyler Stoddard (6-2, 200) and senior cornerback Reggie Lastrapes (6-0, 168) as returning starters. Senior Chance Stevens (5-11, 160) will be a new starter at cornerback.

It appears that the offen-sive strength of the Rams will be along the line where all the 2009 starters return.

Toups will be a dual starter as he returns at center. The guards are senior Gabe Spikes (6-0, 225) and junior Tommy Foy (5’-11, 195.) and the tackles are senior Jordan McBride (6-2, 235) and junior Ben Myers (6-1, 200).

In the skill positions, Stod-dard returns as the slot back,

but the other spots will be manned by new starters.

Junior Ryan Feagin (5-10, 165) takes over at quarterback, with Nordberg and Eaglin tak-ing over at the other running back positions.

Seniors Randy Hesse (6-3, 170) and Jaylin Hadnot (6-1, 260) are potential new starters at wide receiver and tight end.

“A lot of our skill positions will be young with junior var-sity experience,” commented Caldarera.

“Hopefully our offensive line will allow the young skill play-ers to grow up.”

District 4-3A will once again be tough, says the Westlake head coach. Crowley, Eunice, Iowa, Church Point, and North-west will compete with West-lake for district honors.

The Eunice High seniors are expecting a good season includ-ing a district title and a run in the playoffs.

IOWA – The Iowa High School Yellow Jackets managed to sneak into the state 3A playoffs in 2009 after a fourth-place fin-ish in District 4-3A and a 5-5 overall record.

But first-year head coach Sean Richard is taking over at the right time as the Yellow Jackets return 16 starters from last year’s 5-6 team.

Eight of those starters return on the offensive side of the foot-ball. Topping the list is senior quarterback Gene Pete (6-1, 215).

Pete led the Jackets in both rushing and passing in 2009. Pete rushed 110 times for 687 yards and 10 touchdowns while passing for 1,295 yards with 13 touchdowns. The only downside for Pete was the fact that he threw 14 interceptions.

Aiding Pete this year is the re-turn of five of six offensive line-men from 2009. Included are senior tight end Dylan Williams (6-6, 205), senior center Michael Simien (6-0, 245), junior tackle Joel Smith (5-10, 230), and ju-

nior guards Kane Fontenot (6-0, 265) and Blake Vidrine (5-11, 230).

The other two returning of-fensive starters are senior tail-back Jamar Chretien (5-6, 160) and junior wide receiver Dono-van Guillory (5-8, 165).

First-time starters are sopho-more split end Brian Bellard (5-10, 160), senior right tackle Ben Gupton (6-1, 260), and se-nior fullback Robert Moss (5-10, 240).

Senior Dylan Prudhomme (6-0, 190.) will see playing time in relief of Chretien.

In addition to the experience returning on offense, the defen-sive unit matches the number of returning starters with eight. That includes the entire start-ing defensive line from 2009 – senior ends Josh Denison (5-10, 205) and John Paul Lebleu (6-0, 225) along with tackles Christian Stewart (5-10, 225.) and Andrew Papion (5-11, 180). Stewart is a senior and Papion is a junior.

Both inside linebackers in the Jackets’ 4-2-5 alignment will be new starters.

They are senior Daniel Tran-

them (5-9, 160) and sophomore Cody Trim (5-9, 160).

The strong and weak safeties will be manned respectively by Derek Johnson (6-0, 160), a re-turning senior starter, and Tyler Leonard (6-0, 150), a first-time senior starter.

In the deep secondary, the Jackets will return Pete at free safety.

Cornerbacks Sean Celestine (5-10, 170) and Kristone Brown (5’-10, 150) are both returning starters from last season.

Senior Matt Guidry returns as the place kicker after hitting 20 of 23 PATs in 2009.

Iowa opens the season at Ab-beville before three straight home games against Bunkie, Jennings and South Beaure-gard.

The Yellow Jackets then visit Kaplan before opening District 4-3A at Crowley.

Iowa visits Eunice on Oct. 15.The Yellow Jackets host

Church Point before visiting Northwest.

Iowa closes out the regular season at home against West-lake.

PRAIRIE RONDE - North-west went 1-9 in 2009 but the Raiders are expecting to do much better this season with 15 returning starters and a dif-ferent approach on both sides of the ball.

According to head coach Yves Prince, the Raiders are moving from a spread offense to the I formation and will run the ball more this season.

“We are excited about the sea-son and the kids worked hard this summer,” Prince said. “Ev-erybody who picks Northwest for homecoming better watch out - we are coming to play.”

The returning starters on the offensive line include center Dustin Richard (5-11, 235, Sr.) and right guard Nick Thierry (5-11, 250, Jr.).

Zaroni Stevens (6-1, 230, Soph.) and Angelo Joseph (6-10, 440, Sr.) will step up at left tackle and left guard.

“This one of the first year that we have had size,” the coach commented. “Last year we spread it out, but this year we are going to pound the ball.”

Henry Senegal (6-0, 175, Soph.) will direct the offense after he completed 61-of-105 for 514 yards with five intercep-tions and six touchdowns last season.

Joining Senegal in the back-field are running backs De-Quincy Jones (5-9. 170, Sr.), Joskie Frank (6-1, 190, Sr.) and full back David Metz (6-0, 205, Sr.).

“We are hoping to run the football at people this year,” Prince said. “We want to con-trol the clock, gain three or four yards before we break one for a big play.”

Quinton Guillory (5-11, 180, Jr.) will play tight end, while Kiavani Shexnayder (6-1, 170, Soph.) and Lattrakas Jackson (6-2, 170, Soph.) will see action at wide receiver for the Raiders.

“Defensively, we have most of our starters back from last year that including 13 freshmen and sophomores so we have more

experience,” he said. The defensive front has

O’Non Coleman (6-0, 215, Sr.) and Theirry along with George Fontenot (5-1, 240. Sr.).

The linebackers are Dustin Richard (5-11, 235, Sr.), Tra-vis Brooks (6-10, 195, Jr.) and Frank.

The defensive backfield in-cludes Jeremy Winfield (5-10, 180. Sr.), Damarius Pierre (5-9, 160, Fresh.) and Senegal.

Frank will do both the punt-ing and kicking duties this sea-son after just kicking in 2009.

The Raiders open the season against parish rival North Cen-tral before visiting Opelousas Catholic and Mamou.

After home games against Port Barre and Jeanerette, the Raiders hope to improve on last year’s 0-5 distrtict struggles when Northwest opens District

4-3A action at Church Point on Oct. 8.

The Raiders then visit West-lake before entertaining Eunice on Oct. 22.

NWHS closes out the regular season at home against Iowa and a road trip to Crowley.

CROWLEY – The Crowley High Gents expect to be a key player in District 4-3A in 2010 under head coach Tommy Tate.

Tate, who begins his fourth season as head coach, posted a 9-3 overall record in 2009; his best as the Gents’ head coach. In district play, the Gents fin-ished 4-1 to finish second in the district standings behind the Eunice High Bobcats.

The Gents are returning 13 starters from that 2009 team, led by senior quarterback D’Myrus Daniels (6-2, 215).

Daniels was named the 4-3A Offensive MVP by the coaches last season after he rushed for 787 yards and 15 touchdowns while passing for 1,402 yards and 10 touchdowns.

According to Tate, Daniels, who has turned in a 4.8 time in the 40, is a prospect to continue his football career at the next level.

Daniels will have some help in the return of senior running back Tonori Boutte (5-11, 175).

Tate believes that Boutte, who has been clocked at 4.4 in the 40, has a future at the next level as well. Boutte caught 16 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns last season, playing both running back and wing-back.

Leading the Gents’ offensive line is senior guard Devin He-bert (5-11, 225), a first-team All-District selection in 2009. He’ll be joined by four other return-ing starters along the line. They are junior tight end Kye Daigle (6-1, 185), senior tackle Shawn Guidry (6-1, 220), junior center Jude Cradeur (5-10, 225 lbs.), and junior tackle Kaleb Po-tier (6-2, 230). The new starter along the line is senior guard Aaron Miller (5-10, 210).

Three other new starters on offense include junior split end Kaleb Cormier (6-4, 215), junior running back Devonte Bourque (6-2, 215), and junior wide re-ceiver Cade Abshire (6-1, 170).

On defense, six of 2009’s starters are set to return for the Gents. Leading the way is ju-nior rover Tuskani Figaro (6-2, 210), who earned first-team All-District honors last season with

12 quarterback sacks.In Tate’s 3-4 defensive align-

ment, the return of the starting three defensive linemen is a big boost.

The three, all seniors, are left end Troy Johnson (6-2, 230), right end Travaris Robinson

(6-1, 225), and nose tackle Nick Hoffpauir (6-1, 225.)

Hoffpauir will double as this year’s kicker for the Gents.

Inexperienced starters will have the early-season pressure at the second level of the de-fense.

New starters at linebacker include sophomore Brady De-shotel (5-10, 180), junior Chris Wilson (5-10, 185), and junior Jacoby Solomon (6-0, 175).

Junior Phillip Artall (5-8, 170) returns as a starter.

In the secondary, senior Kris-tian Allen (6-0, 165) returns as a starter at right cornerback, with senior Marquise Lee (5-9, 165) stepping up at left cornerback.

Junior Brennan Andrus (5-7, 135) is the new starter at free safety.

“Our defense will be a work in progress,” said Tate. “It should get better as the season goes on.”

The Gents will battling for dis-trict honors once again against Eunice, Northwest, Westlake, Church Point, and Iowa in 4-3A.

CHURCH POINT - The Church Point High School Bears will be rebuilding in 2010, says head coach John Craig Arce-neaux.

The Bears return just seven starters from last season‘s 5-5 team. Coach Arceneaux and his staff must replace all but four starters from their offensive unit.

One of those returnees is se-nior running back Von Duple-chain (5-2, 130), who will be a fourth-year starter for the Bears.

Arceneaux calls Duplechain “one of the most productive backs in the state pound for pound.”

Other returning starters in-clude senior tight end Quinton Elliott (6-1, 180), junior split end Desmond Bellard (5-8, 135), and junior left guard Beau Bak-er (5-9, 215).

Expected to start alongside Baker are junior tackles Taylor Moress (5-11, 245), and Josh Laverne (5-9, 225), sophomore right guard Jarod Savoy (5-9, 210), and senior center Ryan Obrer (5-6, 232).

Sophomore quarterback Ty Leger 5-11, 145) will direct the Wing-Toffense at quarterback.

In addition to Duplechain, Leger will joined in the back-field by fullback Zack Quebo-deaux (5-10, 230), a senior, and halfback Jacob Boone (5-7, 150), a junior.

On defense, the Bears will be led by first-team All-District nose tackle John Leger (5-6, 235), a senior, and sophomore tackle Dexter Charles (6-1, 285).

“Leger and Charles are very athletic and will be very valu-able in helping stop the run,” said Arceneaux.

Leger is a returning starter from 2010.

Junior defensive end Brett Thibodeaux (6-2, 175) returns as starter along the line. Junior Ryan Doucet (5-10, 185) joins Charles at tackle, with sopho-more Tanner Higginbotham (5-7, 150) is a new starter at the other defensive end spot in the Bears‘ 50 defensive alignment.

The new starters at lineback-er are junior Hunter Wimber-

ley (5-7, 165) and sophomore Dennis Guerrero (5-11, 185). Returning senior starter Nick

Ledet (5-9, 165) is the free safe-ty, with junior Lane Miller (5-7, 145) at strong safety.

The cornerbacks are senior Linus Haggar and junior Zack Meche (5-11, 140).

Arceneaux likes the athleti-cism of his defensive unit.

“We will have to lean heavily on this unit in order to give our young offense an opportunity to work through some early season growing pains,” commented the Bears’ head coach.

The Bears will once again be playing in District 4-3A. Last

season they struggled in district play, finishing 1-4. In non-dis-trict action, the Bears were just the reverse, finishing at 4-1.

District opponents will in-clude the Eunice High Bobcats, Crowley, Northwest, Westlake, and Iowa.

Church Point will entertain Eunice on Nov. 5 in the regular season and district finale.

Church Point battles youth, tough schedule

Church Point seniors running back Von Duplechin (10) and defensive lineman John Leger (67) are expected to lead the Bears this season.

LAFAYETTE - The University of Louisiana at Lafyette Ragin’ Cajuns have been on the brink of a postseason berth for the last several seasons and they may be able to take that elusive final step in 2010.

But the Cajuns will have to perform better in the Sun Belt Conference race after a rough non-conference schedule could put UL in a tough situation ear-ly on.

The Cajun defense may be their best chance for a decent season, but the offense has to improve to get past a 6-6 finish again.

UL managed only 22.2 ppg in 2009 and the hope for improve-ment comes from the return of quarterback Chris Masson, who turned in a solid campaign in his first year as the starter in 2009.

The 6-2, 201-pound Mas-son threw for 2,406 yards, the fourth-highest total in school history, but had just 10 touch-downs against eight picks.

Masson will benefit from a dangerous group of wideouts, as well as a talented tight end in Ladarius Green. A Mackey Award candidate, Green (6-6, 225) led the Cajuns with 533 re-ceiving yards.

Marlin Miller (5-11, 189) re-turns after leading the club with 37 catches and the speedy wide-out will also see some carries in the backfield.

By John BursonSports Writer

Following what many fans felt was a disappointing 9-4 fin-ish last season, Head Coach Les Miles of LSU signed a recruiting class of 27.

The question, though, is will those players have an impact on this season, which some sports-writers claim is a decisive one for Miles’ future at LSU?

The answer to Miles’ future at LSU may lie these questions – can junior quarterback Jordan Jefferson step up his play after a year of experience; or is there another viable alternative if Jef-ferson can’t?

Jefferson, who threw for 17 touchdowns with just seven in-terceptions, will need to take more responsibility for the of-fense, improve his accuracy and find his identity in order to be the leader of a team that is stacked with talent and is chop-ping at the bit to have an explo-sive push up the SEC rankings and be seen as a contender for this year’s SEC championship. If he struggles, can Jarrett Lee step in and direct the offense?

But it’s not just the quarter-back position that needs to be addressed on offense.

The Tigers must be able to run the football effectively, no matter who quarterbacks.

The Tigers were woeful in the rushing game in 2009. If the of-fense is going to win games this season, LSU will need to return to its past by dominating the line of scrimmage.

The Tigers will return Stevan Ridley and Richard Murphy, al-though Michael Ford may have the most talent.

They will also have young, but talented true freshmen run-ning backs in Spencer Ware, Jakhari Gore and Alfred Blue. Ware, from Cincinnati is poised to make an impact with his cut-back ability, strength and pure determination.

It has been said he can make something out of nothing and is tough to bring down.

Gore from Miami, may not have the size but he has the speed and elusiveness to make plays. Blue, from Boutte, is

quick on his feet and with im-proved power. This trio will need to adapt quickly to the col-lege level.

But the running backs were just part of the problem last season. The offensive line needs to be able to open holes in the defense to allow the backs to get going. That didn’t happen much in 2009.

Tackle Joseph Barksdale and guard Josh Dworaczyk return as starters, with P.J. Lonergan and T-Bob Hebert fighting for the starting center spot. Alex Hurst and Will Blackwell have the inside track to start at the other tackle and guard spots, respectively.

Chase Clement and Deangelo Peterson should provide athleti-cism at tight end.

With four wide receivers graduated, this is an area which needs to be addressed. The Ti-gers do return leading receiver Terrance Toliver (53 catches and 735 yards), who has big play capability. Reuban Randle and Russell Shepard appear to have the talent to make significant progress based on their limited playing time last year. New re-cruits Kadron Boone and James Wright could also contribute right away as part of the receiv-ing corps.

The loss of seven defensive starters will need to be ad-dressed, but another year un-der defensive coordinator John

Chavis should bring improve-ment to this unit despite those losses. Recruits from the 2009 class such as Sam Montgomery (DE), Michael Brockers (T), and Kevin Mintner (LB), and Mor-ris Claiborne (CB) should help to fill the holes. Additionally, Kelvin Sheppard will return for his senior season. Sheppard was ranked fourth best in the SEC in 2009 with 110 tackles. Veter-ans Lazarius Levingston (DT), Drake Nevins (DT), Patrick Pe-terson (CB) and Brandon Taylor (S) should join with the young-sters to make the Tigers a for-midable defensive unit in 2010.

Special teams should be solid, especially with the return of kicker Josh Jasper and punt-er Derek Helton. Ron Brooks should provide a solid threat as the punt and kickoff returner.

LSU opens the season against North Carolina in Atlanta on Sept. 4.

The Tigers then visit Vander-bilt before entertaining Missis-sippi State, West Virginia and Tennessee.

A road trip to Florida will be followed with a home game against McNeese State Univer-sity on Oct. 16.

LSU visits Auburn and then hosts national champion Ala-bama on Nov. 6.

The Tigers also entertain UL Monroe at home before visiting Ole Miss.

LSU closes out the regular

season with a trip to Arkansas on Nov. 27.

The SEC championship game

is set for Dec. 4 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Freshman Robert Walker, from Mamou, had a great spring and should help the Cajun run-ning game along with junior Ju-lian Shankle, freshman Aaron Spykes and junior college trans-fer Kevis Streeter.

The biggest concern on of-fense it the line, as the Cajuns must replace three starters and there is a lack of depth up front.

Colin Windsor, Leonardo Bates, Ian Burks, Jaron Odom and Jonathan Decoster are the projected starters.

The Cajuns made some strides on defense last season and lead the Sun Belt in interceptions with 16. Overall, the defense forced 26 turnovers last year, ranking in the national top 30.

With seven starters retut-ning, the strength of the defense is the linebacking corps with Grant Fleming and Daylon Mc-Coy.

Fleming (6-2, 232) had 89 tackles and forced three fumbles last year, while McCoy (6-0, 215) posted 55 tackles last season.

Defensive end Terrell Rich-ardson and tackle Derreck Dean should help lead an inexperi-enced group up-front.

Both corners are back in ju-nior Dwight Bentley (5-11, 173) and Orkeys Auriene, who com-bined for 103 tackles and five interceptions.

Seniors Maurice Rolle Jr. and Orkeys Auriene and junior and Lance Kelley all have starting

experience in the secondary. Rolle and Bentley had three in-terceptions each.

Kicker Tyler Albrecht made good on 8-of-11 field goals, including a game-winning 48-yarder as time expired to up-set Kansas State.

Punter Spencer Ortego re-turns after he earned first-team all-league honors after averag-ing 40.6 yards per attempt in 2009.

He allowed only 21 of his 66 punts to be returned and had 15 downed inside the 20.

Aside from making kicks, the Cajuns have been terrific at blocking them, registering 41 over the last eight seasons.

"I'm expecting what they're expecting," head coach Rickey Bustle said, referring to players who have expressed confidence they will contend for their first Sun Belt title since sharing the 2005 crown with Arkansas State and ULM. "I'm expecting to win this conference and compete for the title."

The Cajuns open at Georgia on Sept. 4. After the trip to Ath-ens, the Cajuns return home for their conference opener against Arkansas State, then after a week off will host Sun Belt fa-vorite Middle Tennessee - so the Cajuns’s chances for a confer-ence ring could be determined pretty early in the season.

The Cajuns then visit North Texas before entertaining Okla-

homa State on national televi-sion on OCt. 8.

The Sun Belt Conference race continues for the Cajuns with a trip to Troy followed by a home game against Western Kentucky.

Tests away from conference are trips to Ohio and Ole Miss.

The Cajuns close the regular season with a trip to Florida At-lantic and a battle at home against Florida International. UL Lafayette visits UL-Monroe on Nov. 27 in the finale.

LAKE CHARLES - Defense will be a strong point for the de-fending Southland Conference co-champion McNeese State Cowboys this season with all 11 starters returning.

Actually, only 10 of those who started the last game of the 2009 year return but linebacker Deron Minor, who was a start-er at the first of the year until sidelined with an injury, is also back.

The key for the Cowboys will be if the defense can carry the load until the offense catches up.

And, a key to that side of the ball will be the quarterback po-sition where four year starter Derrick Fourroux has gradu-ated leaving the post wide open.

Besides Minor, headliners on defense are expected to be tack-le Desmund Lighten and free safety Malcolm Bronson.

Minor was a pre-season all-league pick last season but was injured in the Tulane game and sat out the rest of the season. Lighten was a first team all-SLC selection a year ago after ranking second on the team in tackles with 77 and setting a school record by recovering two fumbles for touchdowns.

Bronson was also a first team all-SLC pick in 2009 and re-ceived rookie of the year honors after he led the team in tackles with 89 and made two pass in-terceptions.

Other returnees claiming all-conference honors on defense last year for the Cowboys are safety Darrell Jenkins and cor-nerback Seth Thomas, lineback-er Geremy Pilate, ends Josh El-lison and Terrance Freeman.

The other starters back are tackle Damion Aultman, buck safety Ford Smesny and corner-back London Durham.

The only starters returning on offense are tackles Miguel Gauthreaux who is also a re-turning all-conference pick and Taylor Johnson and center Mase Duge.

Besides Fourroux the Cow-boys also lost all-American run-ning back Toddrick Pendland, all-league tight end Wes Man-gan and all-league offensive tackle Casey Richter.

Champlain Babin, who rushed for 395 yards and a 6.0 average

last year, and Marcus Wiltz, up from the redshirt ranks, are ex-pected to handle the tailback posts along with Michigan State transfer Andre Anderson, while there are four vying for the starting quarterback role.

McNeese added some experi-ence at the quarterback post during the summer when grad-uate student Jacob Bower en-rolled. Bower saw playing time the past two years at Tulsa. Zack O’Quinn, Cody Stroud and Blake Barousse all got in spring action but none have taken a snap in a real collegiate game.

Corday Clark, who caught 26 passes for five touchdowns last year, will step in at tight end and the Cowboys will have a good group of players at wide receiving including 6-3 Damion Dixon, 6-2 Chris Royal, 5-11 Bernardo Henry and 6-2 Devi-ontae Edmonson.

Jonathan Landry (293) and Marcus Bellow (295) are expect-ed to be the other starters.

Josh Lewis, who booted eight field goals and 44 (of 49) PATs last season, returns as the team’s place kicker while Ben Bourgeois and incoming fresh-man James Bice will handling the punting.

The Cowboys will play two FBC schools, traveling to play Missouri on Sept. 11 and then meeting LSU in a historic game (first FCS instate school to play the Tigers) Oct. 16 in Baton Rouge.

A year ago the Cowboys post-

ed a 9-3 record, tied with SFA for the league title and played in the FCS playoffs.

Matt Viator is now in his fifth season as head coach and in the past four years has produced three SLC titles along with three appearances in the FCS post season playoffs.

Viator has guided the Cow-boys to a Southland Conference football championship and into the NCAA Division I champion-ship in three of his four years as head coach at McNeese State.

His 2007 team posted only the fourth undefeated, untied regular season record in the university’s history, won the league title for a second year and participated in the NCAA FCS championship for a second straight year.

Viator had taken over the head job four games deep into the 2006 season, went 6-2 the rest of the way, won the SLC title and put his team into the NCAA FCS championship.

His coaching record is an out-standing 33-10 and his teams have lost only seven regular season games.

In conference competition only, his teams have a 22-5 mark.

He claimed his first collegiate coaching victory in his very first game as head coach when the Cowboys posted a 30-27 win over Southern Utah in 2006.

Viator is the 14th head coach in McNeese history. He was 6-2 in his first season and 5-1 in

league play, winning the final five league games of the year.

Prior to his becoming head coach, Viator, who is a graduate of McNeese, had served the uni-versity as offensive coordinator and is regarded as one of the top Division I offensive minds.

Viator’s offenses have led the league in scoring six times and in 2008 set school records for total offense per game, passing

offense per game and scoring average per game.

Before he joined the Cowboys, Viator was one of the top prep coaches in Louisiana, producing an 81-37 won-lost record, win-ning one state crown (Jennings) and five district titles. He came to McNeese in 1999 as lineback-er coach and was made offensive coordinator in 2000.

GRAMBLING – A 7-4 finish and a win over rival Southern in the Bayou Classic should be considered a successful season.

But not for Grambling State University.

GSU was picked to win the Southwestern Athletic Confer-ence last year and contend for the black college national title.

But the Tigers lost Prairie View A&M 35-32 and Prai-rie View went on to claim the league title.

So in Rod Broadway’s third season, the Tigers are expecting to make a run at the SWAC title if they can fill a few important spots.

Quarterback Greg Dillon (1,747 yards, 13 TD’s in 2009) was denied a sixth year of eligi-bility .

Now the offense is in the hands of sophomore Danny Reyes, who played in only two games last year and threw only 12 times.

The defense is without senior SWAC Defensive Player of the Year Christian Anthony who was sent to the hospital with chest pains this summer and some news reports said he suf-fered an apparent heart attack.

Anthony earned All-America honors after leading the SWAC linemen in solo tackles (55) and

overall tackles (76) last year, and snared five interceptions, returning two for touchdowns.

The Tigers should be able to run the ball well with Frank Warren and Cornelius Walker at running back.

The two combined for 1,571 yards and 14 scores last year.

Starters Julian Wyndon, Charvo Lampton and Victor Phillips head up the offensive

Bumper to Bumper!

Cowboys looking to grab SLC championshipBATON ROUGE – Long-time

Southern head coach Pete Rich-ardson will not be roaming the Southern sidelines after 17 sea-sons as their head coach.

Richardson left with a 134-62 overall record including five na-tional black college champion-ships.

The Jaguars went 6-5 last year including a late-season slide with losses to rival Gram-bling (31-13) in the Bayou Clas-sic and at Texas Southern (30-25).

Enter Lyvonia “Stump” Mitchell, who has 21 years of NFL experience to the job and will be expected to bring back the glory to the Jaguar nation.

All-American defensive back,

Jason House, along with of-fensive lineman, Ramon Chin-young, were tabbed to repeat as first team All-SWAC selections.

Offensive lineman Chris Browne, along with punter Josh Duran were preseason second team selections.

Former Eunice High star Du-ran was solid as a punter (41.3) last year.

Freshman William Griswold, to handle kicking chores, al-lowing Duran to concentrate on punting.

The Jaguar defense returns five of the top six tacklers from last season.

Senior tackle Jordan Miller, who led the Jags in sacks last year and is the top returning

tackler in the front line.Returning starter Steven Wil-

liams and UL Monroe transfer Casey Narcisse will bolster that front line along with the return of senior Dexter James.

Andre’ Coleman, SU’s top tackler last year with 68, re-turns to head up a linebacker corps.

He will be joined by returnees Justin Fletcher, Marcus Clark and Gary Chatman.

Jason House led the nation-with 10 interceptions and 230 yards in interception returns to direct the secondary.

Southern fans are used to high-scoring offenses and Mitchell seems ready to keep the spread attack alive.

That offense will have to re-place the SWAC’s leading pass-er (Bryant Lee) and receiver (Juamorris Stewart) and SU’s leading rusher (Brian Threat) as well as key tight end target Warren Matthews.

Lee accounted for 29 touch-downs last season as well as 2,863 offensive yards in earning SWAC Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Likely starter Jeremiah Mc-Ginty, meanwhile, saw only oc-casional duty and only threw five passes in 2009.

Gary Hollimon, a former quarterback moved to running back and the team’s top return-ing rusher with 346 yards and a

team-high six scores. Lee Almanza and Ramon

Chinyoung, an all-SWAC selec-tion, head up the offensive front , while Curry Allen heads up a new-look receiver corps as the third-leading pass catcher from last season.

At the SWAC Media Days, the Prairie View Panthers gar-nered 17 first place votes and outdistanced second-place se-lection Grambling State by 25 total tallies. Texas Southern finished third, 11 votes shy of Grambling, while Southern and Arkansas-Pine Bluff were pre-dicted a distant fourth and fifth, respectively.

All-SWAC pick linebacker Cliff Exama recorded 94 tackles in 2009 and should be a solid player again this season.

The Tiger secondary has three

returning starters and should be much improved from 2009.

Ari Johnson (18-of-23 field goals) and Kiare Thompson (19.4 yards per punt return) should provide the Tigers with big-play opportunities on spe-cial teams.

Saints set to defend title By John BursonSports Writer

NEW ORLEANS – What do you do for an encore after win-ning your first-ever Super Bowl?

That’s what the New Orleans Saints face entering the 2010 season.

What Saints fan will ever for-get the feeling as cornerback Tracy Porter picked off Peyton Manning’s pass and returned it all of the way for a touchdown in Super Bowl XLIV?

But now it is a new season, and the Saints know that they only way to top last year is to re-peat as champions – a challenge

that has undone many teams in the past. If they can avoid the injury bug, they could certainly have a good shot at a return trip to the Super Bowl.

It starts with quarterback Drew Brees, who passed for over 4,300 yards with 34 touchdowns last season. Brees set a NFL re-cord for passing accuracy with a 70.62 percent completion rate. In throwing 514 passes, he was intercepted just 11 times.

Keeping Brees healthy is a real key to the success of the Saints. Protecting the star quarterback will fall to the of-fensive line, which allowed only 20 sacks last season. The of-

fensive line didn’t just protect the quarterback, it also opened holes for the running game, tak-ing the pressure off Brees with a ground game that averaged just over 130 yards per game.

That offensive line returns in-tact, led by All-Pro guard Jahri Evans and Pro Bowl right tackle Jon Sthinchcomb. Guard Carl Nicks, center Jonathan Good-win, and left tackle Jermon Bushrod all turned in stellar seasons as starters.

Zach Strief and Nick Leckey provided great backup when needed.

The Saints also drafted a couple of promising youngsters in tackle Charles Brown (USC) and center Mark Tennant (Bos-ton College).

The importance of a ground attack by committee proved to effective in 2009. Pierre Thomas led the ground game with 793 yards for a 5.4 average. Reg-gie Bush was effective with 390 rushing yards to go with 335 re-ceiving yards in sharing time in the backfield. Lynell Hamilton, who showed promise last sea-son, should replace Mike Bell, who was lost to free agency. Re-turning from injury is veteran fullback Heath Evans.

The wide receiving corps had a standout year in 2009. Marques Colston had 70 catches for 1,074 yards and nine touchdowns. De-very Henderson had 51 for 804 yards, with Robert Meacham pulling in 45 passes for 722 yards and nine touchdowns. Lance Moore was limited by in-jury but should be healthy this season. Not to be forgotten is tight end Jeremy Shockey, who caught 48 passes for 569 yards.

On defense, the Saints forced 39 turnovers in the regular sea-son under first-year coordinator Gregg Williams. That aggres-siveness continued throughout the playoffs, culminating in Porter’s decisive interception return in the Super Bowl.

Along the defensive line, end Will Smith recorded 13 sacks

and tackle Sedric Ellis was a solid force in the middle. An-thony Hargrove, Remi Ayodele, and Bobby McCray were solid backups. Charles Grant had a disappointing season and was let go in the offseason. In his place, the Saints signed veteran end Alex Brown from the Chi-cago Bears. Free agent lineman Jimmy Wilkerson and rookie Al Woods of LSU should add even more depth to the line.

Jonathan Vilma anchored the Saints linebacking corps in the middle. Vilma led the team in tackles with 130 and was named to the Pro Bowl. Scott Shanle had over 100 tackles as the weakside linebacker. Scott Fujita left in free agency at the strongside spot. Veteran Troy Evans will compete with young-sters Jo-Lonn Dunbar and Jona-than Casillas to replace Fujita. Clint Ingram, a free agent from Jacksonville, could also compete for that spot.

The secondary showed great depth in 2009, with veteran Darren Sharper leading the way with nine interceptions at free safety. Strong safety Roman Harper was a huge force for the defense, while cornerbacks Por-ter and Jabari Greer solidified an area that was historically a problem for the Saints. Veteran Randall Gay and rookie Mal-colm Jenkins were solid back-ups at cornerback, as were vets Pierson Prioleau, Usama Young, and Chris Reis at safety.

Special teams were indeed special for the Saints last sea-son, especially in the playoffs. Kicker Garret Hartley was tre-

mendous in the playoffs, as was rookie punter/kickoff specialist Thomas Morstead. In the re-turn game, Courtney Roby was solid on kickoffs, while Bush is always a threat to go all the way on punt returns.

Head coach Sean Payton kept opponents off balance with his offensive calls, while defensive coordinator Williams did much the same with his calls. Under their leadership, the coaching staff turned in a great season.

The coaching and talent are there for another Super Bowl run, but it is a new year, and now the Saints have the target on their backs. Enjoy the season and let it all play out.

The season begins Thursday, Sept. 9 with a rematch of the NFC title game against the Minnesota Vikings.

A Monday Night Football trip to San Francisco is followed with home games against At-lanta and Carolina.

The Saints travel to Arizona and then Tampa Bay before returning to the Superdome to face Cleveland and Pittsburg.

A visit to Carolina will be fol-lowed with a week off.

The Saints will then battle Seattle at home before a Thurs-day night trip to Dallas on Nov. 25.

New Orleans will then visit Cincinnati before hosting St. Louis.

After road trips to Baltimore

and Atlanta, the Saints will close out the regular season on Jan. 2 at the Superdome against

Tampa Bay.Super Bowl XLV will be

played in Dallas on Feb. 6, 2011.

JAYS!

Blue Jays begin David era By Tom [email protected]

Over the past two years, the Blue Jays have experienced both the thrill of a 9-1 season and the agony of a 3-6 finish.

For first year St. Edmund head coach Thomas David, he is hoping the wins come back this season.

David, 40, is a 1989 graduate from Central Catholic of Mor-gan City and a 1995 Nicholls State alumni moved to Eunice from Holdenville, Okla.

David is the sixth St. Edmund athletic director since 1998 as he replaces Tom Andrus who compiled a 22-10 record in the past three football seasons.

David said he is impressed with the athletic tradition at St. Edmund and understands the struggles of 2009 overshad-owed the impressive 9-1 season of 2008.

“They were on the road six out of nine games and then on top of that they had a bunch of inju-ries,” he reflected. “That took a potentially good season and put it in the tank. They had a lot of unfortunate things and hit then all at the same time.”

David said he is hoping the winning tradition returns this year for the Blue Jays.

“This program is nor lacking anything as far as the way it was run,” the coach said. “Coach Andrus did a good job and he did not leave the team in disarray.”

David said the steps to getting back to winning begins with his senior group.

“We have a chance to be suc-cessful with a good senior class as they know what it takes to win.”

The offense was expected to be led by senior quarterback Doug Zaunbrecher, but he is still recovering from off-season surgery.

Junior David Scott LaFleur and senior Hunter Arnaud will take over the Blue Jay offense.

“They are both capable quar-terbacks,” David said. “They are both good athletes.

“With the chance of injuries we may need all three guys at one time or another this sea-son.”

The running game will be led by seniors Adam Wimberly and Robert Sanders along with sophomore Austin LaFleur and senior Ethan Brown.

“If we do a decent job of block-ing up front we have plenty of different guys who can run the football.”

Senior Adam Clause is s speedy threat at receiver but the Blue Jay coach said he is ex-cited the other receivers includ-ing William Aucoin and Brent Bergeron.

Other receivers are also tal-ented with seniors Kevin Mc-Farlain and Taylor Wallett along with juniors Andre Aguil-lard, and Trey Quirk.

The offensive line will include seniors Dylan Gaspard, Trevor

Landreau, Reid Redlich, Con-ner Ardoin and junior Brandon Leger.

Nick Richard, Wesley Blanchard, Kurt Landreneau and Hank Miller will also see ac-tion up front for the Blue Jays.

“We need to get reps from those guys to keep the offen-sive line fresh and build some depth,” David said.

On the defensive side, the nose guard will be shared by Wallett and Sanders.

Wallertt will also play line-backer, the coach said.

Defensive ends will be Quirk and Gaspard, while Wimberly, Christian Walker, Austin LaF-leur will anchor the linebackers.

Aguillard, Armaud and Au-coin will see time in the sec-ondary along with McFarlain, Clause and David Lafleur.

“I like their work ethic,” David said of his team. “They haven’t backed down and they battled the heat.

“That will help us get better as the season goes on.

“They are learning a new system and that always takes time,” he said/. “Without much of a spring practice, we are a little bit behind as far as learn-ing goes.

“They have put out the effort and I think we have a chance to be a pretty good team.

“If we can stay healthy we have a shot,” David said. “These guys know what it takes to win.

MAMOU – The Mamou High Green Demons may be hard-pressed to match last season’s 5-5 record in 2009.

The problem for head coach John Curtis LaFleur is a dearth of returning starters.

LaFleur will have just five of

22 positions manned by start-ers returning from last season. That means a lot of inexperience will be on the field for the Green Demons.

Three starters will return for LaFleur on offense, led by se-nior quarterback Alex Vidrine (6-1, 195).

BASILE – Head Coach Tony Bertrand led his Basile High Bearcats to the state playoffs in 2009 and, with 12 of those start-ers set to return in 2010, the Bearcats are in great shape to make a repeat trip to the play-offs.

The Bearcats return five of those starters on offense, in-cluding junior fullback Dylan Matte (5-11, 220). Matte rushed 130 times for over 700 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.

Senior Drake LeDoux (5-9, 145) returns at wide receiver after catching 19 passes for 154 yards in 2009.

Three offensive linemen join LeDoux as returning starters. They are senior guards David Fontenot (5-11, 185) and Jacob Veronie (5-10, 180), along with junior tackle Nick Cortez (6-2, 240).

Rounding out the offensive line are senior tight end Nick Bertrand (6-1, 190), junior left tackle Garrett McClelland (5-10, 205), and junior center Wy-att LeDoux (6-0, 195.).

Junior Jarrett Powell (5-9, 155) is a new starter at wide re-ceiver.

VILLE PLATTE – Veteran head coach Dutton Wall hopes that experience will benefit his Sacred Heart Trojans in 2010.

“Last year we had only seven seniors and this allowed us to play a lot of underclassmen that were not ready,” he explained. “This year we should be a little deeper as we have 16 seniors ready to fill the roster.”

On offense, Wall returns six of 2009’s starters, including four offensive linemen. “The offen-sive line has some talented and smart kids,” said Wall. “This should be our strength while the backs will be by committee.”

Senior tackles Michael San-toro (5’10”, 183 lbs.) and Chris Sylvester (6’2”, 192 lbs.) will led the offensive line. Senior Silas Fontenot (5’9”, 229 lbs.) and junior Michael Vidrine (5’11”, 239 lbs.) also return as starting guards from last season. Senior Joseph Tuminaro (5’9”, 156 lbs.) is the new starter at center.

Senior Taylor Veillon (5’11”,

231 lbs.) returns as a starter at tight end, with sophomore Drew David (5’8”, 168 lbs.) also returning as the starter at tailback. Senior Caleb Fon-tenot (5’10”, 167 lbs.) is the new starter at fullback, with senior Kaleb Jon Fontenot (5’10”, 153 lbs.) taking over as the start-ing quarterback. Senior Dylan Fontenot (5’4”, 121 lbs.) and sophomore Nick Firmin (5’6”, 143 lbs.) are the new starters at wide receiver and split end, re-spectively.

There will be five returning starters for the Trojans on de-fense. Taylor Veillon, who will also see duty as the kicker, and Caleb Fontenot return as ends in Wall’s 4-3 defensive align-ment. Michael Vidrine and sophomore Adrian Hollier (6’1”, 191 lbs.) are the new starters at tackle.

Drew David returns as a starter at linebacker, with se-nior Tyler Fontenot (5’8”, 154 lbs.) and sophomore Brandon Soileau (5’7”, 167 lbs.) taking over at the other linebacker spots. Senior cornerback Wil-

liam Fontenot (5’10”, 154 lbs.) returns as a starter. So does ju-nior free safety Wesley Fontenot (5’8”, 162 lbs.). The new starters in the secondary are senior Mat-thew Ardoin (5’9”, 153 lbs.) and junior Rowdy Parrott (5’8”, 163 lbs.) at cornerback and strong safety, respectively.

“The defense will have to im-prove in order to give our offense a chance,” said Coach Wall.

The Trojans will be chal-lenged in District 6-2A, accord-ing to Wall. “Last year we did not win a district game, and I don’t know of any of those teams becoming weaker. In fact, most of the teams will be better or im-proved.”

The Trojans finished the sea-son with a 4-6 overall record, despite the 0-5 mark in district

IOTA – The Iota High Bull-dogs struggled to a 4-6 record in 2009, but head coach Marcus LeJeune has to have a positive feeling about 2010 with the re-turn of 12 starters from last year.

That number includes the Bulldogs’ entire offensive back-field. Senior quarterback Gavin Guidry (6-0,160) is back to lead the unit. Sophomore Bryant Fantroy (5-10, 165) returns at tailback after leading the Bull-dogs in rushing last year with 130 carries for 586 yards and seven touchdowns. Senior Phil-ip Reed (5-5, 165) and senior wingback Colby Wickman (5-10, 180), both returning starters, comprise the remainder of the backfield.

Returning on the offensive line are senior center Sean Vero-nie (5-11, 305) and senior tack-le Mitchell Orcino (6-6, 245). Rounding out the line are new starters John Pinson (6-3, 285), a sophomore tackle; Tyler Cro-chet (6-2, 195), a senior guard; and Derek Smith (6-4, 175), a senior guard. Seniors Bryce Za-unbrecher (5-8, 155) and senior J.P. Ward will fill the roles of split end and tight end, respec-tively.

The Bulldogs’ defensive unit will return five of 2009’s start-ers, including leading tackler Colby Wickman at linebacker in LeJeune’s 4-2-5 alignment. Also

returning is senior linebacker Ethan Navarre (5-9, 165). On the outside are Bryant Fantroy, a returning starter, and sopho-more Thomas Murrell (6-0, 185), a new starter.

The secondary is composed of cornerbacks Brandon Fantroy (6-0, 175), sophomore returning starter, and junior Ryan Chap-man (5-11, 165), a new starter. Gavin Guidry returns as a start-er at the free safety spot.

The defensive line will be composed of all new starters.

At the ends are senior Jimmie Hillman (6-1, 185) and senior Reece Meyer (5-10, 190).

The tackles are junior Mat-thew Trahan (5-9, 190) and ju-nior Taylor Duhon (5-11, 245).

The Bulldogs hope their se-nior-laden team can compete for honors in District 5-2A.

NATCHITOCHES - St. Mary’s head coach Charlie Cry-er heads into the 2010 football season with great expectations. His optimism is most justified since he returns all but three starters from a Tigers team that finished 10-2 in 2009.

In his first season at the Ti-gers’ helm, Cryer posted a 4-1 district mark, good enough for second place in District 3-1A.

The Tigers went on to post a 14-13 win over Basile High in the opening round of the play-offs before falling to Oak Grove in the second round.

“We have a chance to be real good,” said Cryer, “especially with those returning starters back for a second year in my system.

“The key for us will be to stay healthy and work hard.”

The Tigers will return 10 de-fensive starters this season, in-cluding senior linebacker John William Methvin (5-11, 200). Methvin was the Tigers’ leading tackler in Cryer’s 4-2-5 defen-sive alignment in 2009.

Also set to return is senior strong safety William Townsend (5-10, 160), who led the team with six interceptions in 2009.

Joining Methvin at linebacker is senior Chris Cryer (6-4, 185).

Cryer led the Tigers with four fumble recoveries last season. Junior Regan Kaufman (5-8, 220) returns to join Townsend at the other strong safety spot.

The defensive line returns in-

tact from last season. Seniors Clifford Walker (6-0, 225.) and Trey Davis (5-10, 170) are the ends, with Brandon Kelly (5-10, 210) and Victor Bayonne (6-3, 265) at the tackles.

Junior Garrett Ingram (5-7, 140) and senior Roger Bailes (5-6, 140) return at the cornerback slots.

The lone new starter on de-fense is senior Will Strahan (5-7, 140) at the free safety posi-tion.

On offense, nine of last year’s starters are set to return. Lead-ing the way is senior quarter-back William Breland (5-7, 145). Breland completed 55 passes for 855 yards with 10 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

Breland will be joined in the backfield by junior Derion Por-chia (5-10, 175). Porchia rushed 167 times for 1,351 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2009.

Sophomore fullback Mark Gallion (5-10, 200) returns to lead the blocking for Porchia.

In Cryer’s multiple offensive set, senior Logan Kyzar (5-9, 140.) returns at split end, while

junior Steele Merritt (6-2, 185) is back at wide receiver. Sopho-more Sloan Dieter (6-1, 190) is a new starter at tight end.

Four of the five interior of-fensive linemen return as 2009 starters.

Junior Austin Hoare (5-9, 190 lbs.) is the center, flanked by junior guards Cody Platt (5-10, 230) and Justin Freddie (5-9, 200).

Junior left tackle Ryan Metoyer (6-0, 225) is back as a starter, with sophomore Nick Takes (6-0, 225) taking over at right tackle.

St. Mary’s opens the season at home against Lakeview be-fore three straight road trips to Grambling, Cedar Creek and St. Edmunds (Sept. 24).

The Tigers return home to take on Lakeside before opening district at LaSalle.

Home games against Block and Tensas are followed by a road game to Montgomery.

St. Mary’s closes the regular season at home against North-wood-Lena.

Tigers have high hopes after 10-2 finish in 2009

(MS) Kids enjoy summer with a break from school, adults often take time off from work, and the weather encourages everyone to get outside and soak up the sun. But the same enjoyable weather can be dangerous if precautions aren’t taken. Time outdoors can be delightful but it can also prove deadly. One of the more overlooked health risks each summer is heat stroke, particularly among athletes. University of North Carolina professor Frederick O. Mueller, in his Annual Survey of Football Injuries, cites 33 heat stroke-related deaths between 1995 and 2008. Most notable among those was the late Korey Stringer, an American football player who died from complications of heat stroke in 2001 during training camp with the Minnesota Vikings. Stringer’s death helped shed light on heat stroke, though it might have also given the false impression that heat stroke can only be suffered by those physically exerting themselves in summer heat. But anyone can fall victim to heat stroke, highlighting the importance of understanding heat stroke before it is too late.

What Is Heat Stroke?A form of hyperthermia, heat stroke occurs when body tem-perature is abnormally elevated and is accompanied by physi-cal and neurological symptoms. Heat stroke is a genuine medical emergency, one that requires prompt treatment to avoid fatal consequences.

Why Does Body Temperature Rise?Heat stroke can be confusing, especially for those who spend ample time outdoors when tem-peratures are hot. A person might be used to summer heat and all of a sudden suffer heat stroke. This leaves many questioning why body temperature rises during heat stroke. This is easily explained.Normally, the human body gener-ates heat through metabolism and is often capable of dispersing this heat either through radiation of heat through the skin or through evaporation of sweat. However, during periods of extreme heat or when a person is vigorously exerting themselves under the sun, the body might experience difficulty dispersing the heat it generates. This results in rising body temperature.Another reason body temperature might rise is dehydration. When dehydrated, the body might not be able to sweat fast enough to disperse heat, again resulting in elevated body temperature.

Who Is Most Susceptible to Heat Stroke? Thanks in large part to deaths of athletes that are heavily publi-cized, many people assume ath-letes are most susceptible to heat stroke. While athletes increase their risk of heat stroke whenever exercising in extreme heat, others are at risk for heat stroke as well. Among those also at risk for heat stroke are the elderly. This is often due to medications that

might make them vulnerable to heat stroke. In addition, elderly persons diagnosed with heart, lung or kidney disease are also at risk of heat stroke. Infants are also at risk of heat stroke, as is anyone who works outdoors under the sun.

What Symptoms Indicate Heat Stroke? Elderly people suffering from heat stroke might feel as though they are having a heart attack. That’s because symptoms of heat stroke sometimes mimic those of a heart attack. Though not all symptoms of heat stroke will necessarily appear, and different people may suffer different symp-toms, the following are some of the common signs and symptoms of heat stroke:* absence of sweating, with red or flushed dry skin* high body temperature* difficulty breathing* rapid pulse* disorientation* hallucinations* feelings of confusion

How Should a Heat Stroke Vic-tim Be Treated? If a medical professional is avail-able, it’s always best to leave a heat stroke victim’s care to the professionals. However, heat stroke victims need immediate assistance to reduce the risk of organ damage. So if no profes-sionals are around to help, the fol-lowing approach can help reduce the risk of long-standing side effects and possibly even death. 1. Cool the victim. 2. Get the victim into the shade, remove the victim’s clothing and apply cool water to the skin. 3. Fan the victim to promote sweating and evaporation, and if available place ice packs under the armpits and in the groin. 4. Continually monitor body tem perature and cooling the victim until the body tempera ture drops to 101-102 F. For more information on heat stroke, consult a physician.

LEBEAU – Head coach John W. Johnson enters his second year as head coach of the North Central Hurri-canes with the goal of turning around the football program.

“So far, for the spring and summer, we are seeing a lack of commitment to football, and know that the old habit of showing up for August has been a bad habit that is a North Central reality,” com-mented Johnson.

“Overall, this team will be on a mission to being commit-ment, a new mind-set, and respect to the sport of foot-ball at North Central High School.”

The Hurricanes did win one game in 2009, but North Cen-tral finished with a 1-9 over-all record and a district mark of 0-6.

Coach Johnson does return 20 starters from last year’s team.

On offense, the Hurricanes bring back senior quarter-back Jamal Doucet (6-2, 205).

Doucet passed for 778 yards, but had just 11 touch-downs to go along with 18 in-terceptions. Doucet rushed 60 times for 226 yards.

Doucet will also punt and kick for the Hurricanes this year.

Junior Jeremy Rose (5-10, 230) returns at running back for the Hurricanes.

Rose rushed 106 times for 331 yards and added nine re-ceptions for 84 yards.

Junior Markell Chambers (5-8, 160) and Jermaine Co-meaux (5-10, 165) should also see playing time in the back-field.

Senior Kyrie Dixon (5-8, 160) will return at wide re-ceiver.

Five of six offensive line-men return for the Hurri-canes.

Junior Kyron Brown (6-2, 230) returns at tight end.

The tackles are senior Jacoby Shaw (6-2, 265) and sopho-more Terrance Fontenot (5-11, 260) and the guards are senior Ahmad Eaglin (5-9, 330) and sophomore Terry Hartford (5-10, 320) – all re-turning starters.

New to the line will be soph-omore center Joey Doucet (5-9, 175). Freshman Cedrick Robinson (6-2, 240) and ju-nior DeMone Johnson (5-11, 340) are backups.

On defense, the starting line from 2009 returns in-tact. The ends are sophomore Ron Robinson (5-10, 205) and Kyren Brown.

Jacoby Shaw and Terry Hartford are the tackles, backed by freshman Devante Brown (5-8, 170).

The linebacker corps re-turns Rose and Chambers as starters, along with senior DeAntonio Vaughns (5-10, 180).

Comeaux, Doucet, and ju-nior Alonzo Harris 6-0’, 165) return as starters in the sec-ondary. Sophomore Nathan-iel Francis (5-9, 150) will also see playing time.

“We will spend more time on our defensive fundamen-tals this fall, and expect our leaders to step forward,” said Coach Johnson.

North Central opens the season at St. Landry Par-ish rival Northwest before hosting Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.

A road trip to Port Barre is followed with three straight home games against Ville Platte, Delcambre and the District 5-1A opener against St. Edmund (Oct. 8).

After two trip to New Roads to face Catholic High of Pointe Coupee and False Riv-er Academy, the Hurricanes will entertain Westminster Christian Academy.

North Central closes the regular season at home against Archbishop Hannan.

Gators looking to improveBy John BursonSports Writer

FALSE RIVER - The 2010 season marks the second full year for False River Academy head coach Brad Bass.

Bass posted a 2-8 mark in 2009 in his first year but ex-pects his Gators to be improved this season based on the return of 15 starters from last season’s campaign.

Coach Bass returns eight de-fensive starters from last year, including two senior lineback-ers. They are Besson Vosburg (5-9, 165) on the outside and Micha Butte (6-2, 185) on the inside of the multiple defensive alignment of the Gators.

Junior Ashton Brooks (5-10, 165) returns as a starter inside, along with sophomore Johna-than David (5-10, 165) on the outside.

Senior Dexter Andre (5-10, 165) will play on the inside as

well for the Gators.Nose tackle Brock Rack forte

(5-8, 165) returns after winning a starting job as a freshman last season.

The duo of John Fabre (6-1, 200) and Cody Bergeron, listed as co-starters, will rotate on at one end spot, while junior Marc Bennett (6-3, 210) starts at the other defensive end.

Returning starters in the sec-ondary include seniors Aaron Boudreaux (5-9, 155) and Brad Guillory (6-0, 185) at cornerback and safety, respectfully.

The new starter in the second-ary is sophomore Brody Cres-sard (5-10, 155).

On offense, Brad Guillory re-turns to lead the unit at quar-terback. Guillory was the team’s leading rusher as well as the leading passer in 2009.

Guillory will once again han-dle the punting and kicking du-ties for the Gators this year.

Returning to aid Guillory in

this season’s multiple attack offense are running backs Ash-ton Brooks and William Preiu (6-1, 170), a sophomore. Senior Chance Bergeron (6-0, 220) steps into starting fullback spot for the first time.

Seniors Dexter Andre and Aaron Boudreaux return as starting wide receivers for the Gators.

Two starters return along the offensive line. They are senior right guard Mathew Trabonna (5-8, 265) and sophomore center Andre Beard (5-10, 220). New starters along the front line in-clude John Fabre, Micha Butte, and John Pierce (6-0, 215), all juniors.

The Gators finished fourth in District 5-1A last season with a 1-3 mark.

The district includes the St. Edmund Blue Jays, Westmin-ster Academy, Catholic High of Pointe Coupee, and North Cen-tral.

while freshman Jalen Doucette and Seth Edwards, sophomore Justin Griffin and junior Bren-don Roberts could carry the ball this season.

The offensive line includes ju-nior Robert Bertrand, freshmen Josh West, Michael Day, Rich-ard Gillespie, Jeremiah Guil-lory along with junior Joshua Van Norman and sophomore Spencer Stawicki.

at home against Lake Arthure before visiting Vermilion Catho-lic.

The Bulldogs begin district action at home against Welsh on Sept. 24 before vis-iting Oakdale. A home game against Kinder is followed by a trip to Lake Arthur and a non-district contest at Livonia.

The Bulldogs close out the regular season with a home game against Pine Prairie and visit to Mamou.

The Bearcats’ offense will miss last season’s leading rush-er and leading passer, Fabian Bellard, who graduated. Bellard accounted for 20 touchdowns at the quarterback position as well as close to 1,500 total yards.

Taking over at quarterback in 2010 is senior Matt Pruitt (6-1, 190). Joining Matte in the back-field as the new tailback is se-nior Jake Fournerat (5-11, 165).

On defense, the Bearcats have seven starters returning from last year. Leading the way is linebacker Nick Bertrand, who led the team with 113 total tack-les and five sacks in 2009. For his outstanding season, Ber-trand was named Evangeline Parish’s Most Valuable Player on defense, along with a first-team All-District selection.

Joining Bertrand as a return-ing starter at linebacker is Wy-att LeDoux in Basile’s 4-2-5 de-fensive alignment.

Seniors Fred Lewis (5-10, 205) and Jacob Veronie return as starters at end and tackle, respectively.

They will be joined along the front wall by junior end Nick Cortez and sophomore tackle Landon Ortego (5-11, 180).

Fournerat returns as a start-er at strong safety, partnering

with sophomore Kevin Hardy (5-6, 155) as a new starter at strong safety.

Pruitt will do double duty as a new starter at free safety. Se-nior cornerbacks Darke LeDoux and Brooks Fontenot (6-1, 180) return as starters to complete the defensive secondary.

The Bearcats should be solid on special teams thanks to the return of Logan Langley as the placekicker. Langley, who will also handle the punting chores this season, hit 23 of 25 PATs in 2009.

Basile opens the season at Gueydan before entertaining Pine Prairie.

A road trip to Pickering is fol-lowed by a home contest against East Beauregard.

The Bearcats close out non-district action with a trip to White Castle.

Basile opens District 4-1A play with a visit to Hamilton Christian on Oct. 8.

A home game against Ober-lin and a trip to Merryville are next for the Bearcats followed by a home game against South Cameron.

Basile end the regular season at Elton in the Battle of Bayou Nepique.

Basile finished third in the standings last year and suffered a tough overtime loss to St. Mary’s in the first round of the playoffs.

BasileFrom Page 7B

Basile quarterback Matt Pruitt (11) is joined by running backs Dylan Matte (9) and Jake Fournerat (8).

The other two starters back from 2009 are senior offensive linemen. They are guards Ben Soileau (5-7, 180) and Tyler Bor-delon (5-9, 230).

Completing the Green De-mon offensive front are senior center Garrett Perkins (5-10, 240), senior tackle Sam Daks (5-10, 180), and sophomore tackle Brandon Fiatoa (6-1, 306). Se-nior Nick Williams (6-1, 280) is the slated starter at tight end.

Joining Vidrine in the back-field are senior fullback Jessie Giror (5-9, 170) and freshman running back Corey Harris (5-6, 150 ). The wide receivers are se-nior Riley Marcantel (5-8, 170) and junior Dominique Ardoin (6-1, 180).

“We will rely heavily on 3-year starting quarterback Alex Vid-rine to lead the team,” said LaF-leur. “Other talented players

will have to show a knack for making plays because defenses will gear up to stop Vidrine.”

On defense, the Green De-mons will have to compete early on without Logan Christ, a two-way starter who was the lead-ing tackler in 2009. Christ had 95 total tackles for Mamou last season.

“The loss of Logan to an ACL in spring will handcuff our team until we find a suitable replace-ment on both sides of the ball,” commented LaFleur. The head coach is hopeful that Christ can return before the end of the sea-son.

Defensively, the Demons re-turn just two starters from 2009 in senior nose guard Ben Soi-leau and senior linebacker Rob Bellard (5-10, 180).

Joining Bellard at linebacker are senior Tyler Ardoin (5-8, 150) and sophomore Robbie Du-pre (5-9, 150). Joining Soileau along the front line are senior tackle Nick Williams, senior end Brock Reed (6-0, 190), and

junior end Jordan Fontenot (6-2, 195). Williams and Fontenot saw considerable action as sub-stitutes last season, according to LaFleur.

The Demons will enter the season with all new starters in the secondary, although a couple of players did see considerable action last year. Those players are junior cornerback Aquino Gauthier (5-8, 160) and senior strong safety Jessie Giror.

Vidrine will do double duty as the free safety, with Kevin Young (6-0, 175) holding down the other cornerback spot.

The Green Demons are again placed in District 5-2A, where they finished fourth with a 3-3 in 2009.

Mamou will compete against Pine Prairie, Iota, Welsh, Oak-dale, Kinder, and Lake Arthur for district honors.

“For us to be able to compete in this tough district, we will have to limit mistakes, control the clock, and play good de-fense,” said LaFleur.

OPELOUSAS - Looking at the numbers, the Westminster Christian Crusaders should be the odds-on favorite to repeat as the champions of District 5-1A.
