Attendees of the 2010 Da-kota County Fair will be able to hear the John Schottler family sing and view black Shetland ponies in the histor-ic outdoor museum Dakota City Heritage Village. The old song-and-pony show is known as “Milk Buds” because the Shetlands are raised on a dairy farm and their hitch is often jok-ingly compared to the fa-mous Budweiser Clydesdales. Milk Buds – a family of ponies that have “white socks” similar to Clydesdales – have been performing in parades, fairs and for dairy breakfasts for 37 years, said John Schottler, the patriarch of Milk Buds. In addition to the horses, the entertainment includes three generations of Schot-tler family singers. “I like to have as many family members as I can,” he said. At least three of Schot-

tler’s grandchildren will ac-company him and his ponies at the Dakota County Fair where they have been per-forming for three years. High school seniors Cy-lie Colbeth and Kate Keller will bring their vocal talents alongside a younger grand-son, Cade Colbeth.

The ponies Schottler raises Shetland ponies on a dairy farm in Somerset, Wis. “We have about 45 in all and we use the best in the hitch,” he said. “We like to use the younger ones at each

show.” Each year, Schottler raises six or eight Shetland ponies so they have new animals and have some to sell. The Schottler family got its start raising the black and white ponies in the mid-1960s when they lived in Austin, Minn., and John accepted a pony named Lightning in ex-change for filling a neighbor’s silo. Years later he chose a tiny 1-year-old pony named Corky out of the field. Each of the current Milk Buds ponies have been born on the family farm. Friendly with children, the ponies were picked primar-ily for color with four white socks and a white patch on the tail, Schottler said. When the ponies named Benji, Holly, Jericho, Harley, Sonny, Zeke, Riley and Clem are not being driven, they are on display for fairgoers to pet and enjoy. Schottler has taught his grandchildren to care for the

400- to 500-pound ponies that stand 40 to 46 inches tall. “It takes three to four peo-ple to safely and comfortably harness them,” he said. The family members all pitch in to do the watering, feeding and cleaning. “Horses are a … part of history in America for cen-turies and they are very man-ageable,” Schottler said. Caring for the animals may take a unique twist at the fair as a new foal may be born during that time. “Horses don’t give you much opportunity; they foal very quickly and you won’t know it until 15 or 30 min-utes before,” Schottler said.

Singing troupe Since 1974 the Schottler family has exhibited and performed with Milk Buds at shows in states from the Midwest to the East Coast, including entertaining each year at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis., since 1984. “Our great claim to fame is that we have been at the New York State Fair in Syra-

cuse seven times,” Schottler said. He said the Dakota Coun-ty Fair is one his family’s fa-vorites because of the atmo-sphere of Dakota City. “I always enjoy Dakota Village because it is history and my wife (Georgine) likes it because of the museums,” he said. The family will sing folk classics and patriotic songs. Touring fairs with his generations of children and now grandchildren is the best part, Schottler said. “It is great being with them and seeing them grow up and knowing they know everything to do, and I do not need to worry because my three seniors have everything down pat and they know what to do when I pull into the fair,” he said. To see videos of the Shet-land ponies and hear a family performance, check out the website www.milkbuds.com.
