FAIR hISTORYThe first recorded Kitsap County Fair was held in 1923 in Port Orchard, some 15 miles from its present location. It moved to the Kitsap Fairgrounds & Events Center, in 1958. In 1929, exhibitors at the Fair totaled 1,000; today there are more than 6,000 annual attendance of 80,000.

In 1960, the Chief Kitsap Stampede sold stock certificates for $1 and constructed the Thunderbird Arena. When completed it held 12,000 spectators. In the late ‘70’s, portions of the Arena were condemned. The covered grandstands were later added. Today the Arena holds 5,000 spectators and is used year-round for various events such as D-derby, Thunderbird Pro Rodeo, and other events. The complex has an annual overall attendance at its various events of more than 211,000.

AImS & PuRPOSESThe Kitsap County Fair & Stampede is held annually for the purpose of educating, entertaining and creating a better quality of life for the residents of Kitsap County and surrounding counties.

EDuCATIONWill consist of teaching our youth historical lessons so they may better understand what has shaped Kitsap County to become what it is today and what it will become in the future. We promote agriculture so that consumers may better understand the source of their food and fiber. We will also provide information to consumers so that they may make better choices of products and ideas in their private lives. Competitive exhibits are another one of the tools that our fair will use to educate our customers.

ENTERTAINmENTWill be available to assist people in enjoying the fair and it will also be used as a tool to increase fair attendance enabling us to better educate the public.

A BETTER QuALITY OF LIFEWill be the end result of the education and entertainment provided by the Kitsap County Fair & Stampede. Providing meeting spaces for our public to use off season is another

way that we improve the quality of life for our customers. The Kitsap County Fair & Stampede generates community spirit by having the largest interaction between residences from Kitsap and surrounding counties.

Meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm at the Fairgrounds & Events Center in the Kitsap Sun Pavillion conference room. Please note: the Fair Board does not meet in December.

HELL’S BELLES are first and foremost dedicated AC/DC fanatics. This is what we all have in common. We’re all part of a huge community of devotees to one of the greatest rock-n-roll bands in the world. This is who we all are, and this is what HELL’S BELLES strives to deliver with mechanical precision and passionate fury. Endorsed by Angus Young himself (Blender Magazine, 2003), HELL’S BELLES are the closest one can get without actually moving to Australia and joining AC/DC’s road crew. HELL’S BELLES are indeed ALL female, all the way to their rock-n-roll cores, all the time and without exception. Directly after the PRCA rodeo. Concert is free with fair admission, must purchase rodeo ticket for early entrance. Dance In The Dirt To Some Great Classic Rock.

The Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign was first introduced at the 2004 Wrangler Finals Rodeo when breast cancer survivor, Terry Wheatley asked her son, team roper Wade Wheatley, to wear a pink shirt at one performance. Wade convinced his fellow contestants to join him, so Wrangler Jeans and Shirts quickly produced enough pink shirts for every NFR contestant.

To encourage the contestants to support the campaign, the committees gave $100 to a contestant that won his/her event if they were wearing a pink shirt. The campaign took off from there and fans as well started wearing pink shirts on the designated “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” night.

Come join us on Saturday Night for the annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink night. This year we are honoring Peninsula Community Health Services (PCHS), a local non-profit organization providing access to medical and dental services since 1987 for low income and uninsured patients. PCHS will use these funds to assist patients with the expenses for additional screenings to detect breast cancer.

You can support our cause by purchasing merchandise, buying raffle tickets for a special quilt donated by Coleta Corey as well as other items, or by simply making a donation in honor of someone you know.

We would like to honor Linda Foutch, and thank her for all the time and energy she puts into this great program. She has left a footprint for many of us to follow. She continues to be present in all that we do for this important cause.

Saddle bronc - The bareback

rider does not use a saddle or rein, but uses a rigging that consists of a leather and rawhide composite piece often compared to a suitcase handle attached to a surcingle and placed just behind the horse’s withers. The rider leans back and spurs with an up and down motion from the horse’s point of shoulder toward the rigging handle, spurring at each jump in rhythm with the motion of the horse.

Professional rodeos in the United States and Canada usually incorporate both timed events and “rough stock” events, most commonly calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc and bareback bronc riding, bull riding, and barrel racing. Some events are based on traditional ranch practices; others are modern developments and have no counterpart in ranch practice.

Steer Wrestling

- Also known as “Bulldogging,” is a rodeo event where the rider jumps off his horse onto a steer and ‘wrestles’ it to the ground by grabbing it by the horns. This is probably the single most physically dangerous event in rodeo for the cowboy, who runs a high risk of jumping off a running horse head first and missing the steer, or of having the thrown steer land on top of him, sometimes horns first.

Typical professional times will be in the range of 3.0 to 10 seconds from the gates opening to the wav-ing of the flag. The steers used today are generally weigh between 450–650 pounds, and the human steer wrestlers typically weigh 180–300 pounds.

bareback bronc Riding

- The rider is only allowed to hang onto a bucking horse with a “rigging”. Each competitor climbs onto a horse, which is held in a bucking chute. When the rider is ready, the gate of the bucking chute is opened and the horse bursts out and begins to buck. The rider attempts to stay on the horse for eight seconds without touching the horse with his free hand. A rider that manages to complete a ride is scored on a scale of 0-50 and the horse is also scored on a scale of 0-50. Scores in the 80s are very good, and in the 90s, are exceptional. A horse who bucks in a spectacular and effective manner will score more points than a horse who bucks in a straight line with no significant changes of direction.

Team Roping -

Two people capture and restrain a full-grown steer. One horse and rider, the “header,” lassos a running steer’s horns, while the other horse and rider, the

“heeler,” lassos the steer’s two hind legs. Once the animal is captured, the riders face each other and lightly pull the steer between them, so that it loses its balance and lies down. This technique originated from methods of capture and restraint for treatment used on a ranch.

Tie-Down Roping -Is based on

ranch work in which calves are roped for branding, medical treatment, or other purposes. It is the oldest of rodeo’s timed events. The cowboy ropes a running calf around the neck, and his horse stops and sets back while the cowboy dismounts, runs to the calf, throws it to the ground and ties three feet together. When the tie is complete, the roper throws his hands in the air to signal

“time” and stop the clock. The roper then returns to his horse, mounts, and moves the horse forward to relax the tension on the rope. The timer waits for six seconds, during which the calf must stay tied before an official time is recorded.

HRODEO EVENTSH

Barrel Racing - A timed

speed and agility event. In barrel racing, horse and rider gallop around a cloverleaf pattern of barrels, making agile turns without knocking the barrels, barrel racing is an exclusively women’s sport. Barrel racing originally developed as an event for women. While the men roped or rode bulls and broncs, the women barrel raced.

Barrelman - Keith Isley – Sponsored by the Kitsap Stampede CowpokesOne of the most popular and entertaining characters in the arena at PRCA rodeos across the country is the barrelman. He helps entertain the crowd during breaks and lulls in action, often verbally jousts with announcers

– in a playful manner, of course – and helps protect bull riders from the massive beasts they are trying to ride for eight seconds. For the second straight year, Keith Isley swept the Coors Man in the Can award, Comedy Act of the Year and Clown of the Year at the annual PRCA Awards Banquet, Dec. 1 at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas. Isley, from Goldston, N.C., also was selected as Coors Man in the Can in 2006.

Bull Riding - An event where the cowboys ride full-grown bulls instead of horses. Because bulls are unpredictable and may attack a fallen rider, rodeo clowns, now known as “bullfighters”, work during bull-riding competition to distract the bulls and help prevent injury to competitors. The ride is scored from 0–100 points. Both the rider and the bull are awarded points. There are usually two judges, each judge scoring the bull from 0–50 points, and the rider from 0–50 points. The combined point totals from both judges make up the final score for the ride. Scores of zero are quite common as many riders lose control of the animal almost immediately after the bull leaves the bucking chute. Many experienced professionals are able to earn scores of 75 or more. Scores above 80 are considered excellent, and a score in the 90s exceptional. For points to be awarded the rider must stay mounted for a minimum of 8 seconds, and he is scored only for actions during those 8 seconds. A rider is disqualified for touching the bull, the rope, or himself with his free arm.

HRODEO EVENTSHRough Stock Events

Bucking ChuteDefinition of Bucking Chute: The bucking chutes are the stock pens in a rodeo arena where the wild horses and bulls are placed. Cowboys and cowgirls then place their riding equipment on the animal and mount for their ride. A gate that opens up into the arena is flung wide when the competitor nods their head.
