“ ” It means a lot to me to be a part of such a selfless team that gives 100 percent on and off the court.

- Alex Kelleher ‘13

“ ”Good teams become great ones when the mem-bers trust each other enough to surrender the “me” for the “we” and that is what BC tennis is all about!

- Olga Khmylev ‘13

“ ” It’s hard to pick a favorite memory, but I have to say the moment that really paved the way for the rest of our season, was our first in-conference match when we upset Virginia Tech 4-3. I think that match was exhilarating in so many ways, especially for the underclassman. We were able to start the ACC season out on a positive note, and send the message that we are in it to win.

- Brittany Delaney ‘10

“ ”My best memory here at BC so far was when we beat Virginia Tech in the 2009 season. It was one of our biggest wins of the year because everyone on the team pulled through to help us get our second ACC win of the season. The BC tennis program is full of hard-working, fun and friendly girls. We have the right combination of leadership, youth, and energy and we are really looking to put our best foot forward in the 2009-2010 season.

The Eagles return only four letter winners from the 2008-2009 campaign. BC was hit hard by graduation as it lost three starters, including its top two singles players in Lana Krasnopolsky and Lauren Cash. The 2009-10 squad will have to find a way to balance their experienced veterans, along with their new young talent, as they prepare for their fifth season in the competitive Atlantic Coast Conference. Boston College is eager to improve its standing in the conference, and will be counting on this mix of experience and youth to help get it there.

Head Coach Nigel Bentley enters his 10th season with the Eagles. He has done some impressive things with the program since he took it over, and this last calendar year was no exception. He helped lead the program to its highest-ever national ranking of No. 58 in the country. The team has earned this rank twice since Bentley has been the head coach last season, and the 2000-01 season. This summer Bentley also brought in the 21st best freshman class in the nation according to The Tennis Recruiting Network. He will have help to tutor this promising young class as he returns a familiar, yet experienced, coaching staff. Katie McNamara, a 1992 inductee into the Boston College Variety’s Club Hall of Fame, returns for her ninth season as a volunteer coach. Bentley will also welcome back former BC tennis great Cynthia Tow in her third year as assistant coach.

Bentley is optimistic about the upcoming season:

“We have some lofty goals again this year. We are entering our fifth year in the ACC and we have grown more confident and comfortable every season. The conference has helped our recruiting and this is proven in the outstand-ing freshman we have this year. We are very young, but if we can stay healthy we will be very competitive. We understand as a team we must play smart, play hard, play together and have fun. We look forward to another terrific season.”

Sophomore Katarina Gajic made an immediate impact on the BC line-up as a freshman last season. She saw time in all three of the top singles spots, but established herself as a solid number three as she went 7-5 at that posi-tion. She is a very gifted player, and the Eagles be counting on her to fill in one of those vacated top singles spots. “Katarina will be a player in the top of our lineup this season” said Bentley. “She has a year of experience under her belt, and she looks to be very comfortable and confident. When she is firing on all cylinders she is capable of beating anybody in the country.”

Junior Katharine Attwell and senior Brittany Delaney are the two other start-ers who are returning from last year’s squad. They will be looked upon to stabilize the middle of the lineup, and to provide leadership to the incoming freshman.

Attwell spent most of her time at the No. 4 spot last year where she went 6-7. She has been a steady force throughout her BC career, and coach Bentley expects that to continue this season as she has had a tremendous fall season for the Eagles. “Katharine has returned in great shape, and hitting the ball tremendously. She has a very powerful attacking baseline game. She has added more options to her game, and she is ready to really take off for us this year.”

Delaney who is the only senior on this year’s team has been named the lone team captain. She was 5-5 at No. 6 singles last season, and looks to

provide depth and leadership for coach Bentley this season. “Brittany has the most complete game of any player on this team. She has an all-court game style that allows her to use a variety of shots and tactics. Brit is the leader of the team. If she can stay healthy I anticipate her having a big senior year.”

The Eagles will also look for contributions this year from junior Jackie Maba-tah who will round out the Eagles returning roster. “Jackie’s doubles game is very solid. Every opportunity she has been given in doubles she has stepped up and performed beautifully.”

This freshman class is one of the most anticipated in year as they bring in loads talent and even more potential. The class features four players in Olga Khmylev, Alex Kelleher, Ina Kauppila, Elizabeth Workman and Natalia Montano.

Khmylev comes to BC from the state of New York where she was ranked second in the state her senior year. Coach Bentley looks for her to make an immediate impact in the top of the starting lineup for the Eagles this season.

Kelleher is a local product who was ranked second in the state of Massa-chusetts in her senior season. She has loads of potential and coach Bentley is excited to see what she can do as the year progresses.

Kauppila enjoyed a good deal of success playing tennis in Finland, and hopes to bring that success to the collegiate level.

“Alex, Olga and Ina will all contribute immediately to the starting lineup. They all have powerful baseline games. They bring a refreshing attitude to practice each day, and all have a great chance to be terrific players in the ACC.”

Workman and Montano round out this talented freshman class. Coach Bentley expects them to compete for playing time in singles and doubles play. “Elizabeth is in the best shape of anybody on the team, while Natalia is a solid player who will provide us with some excellent depth. Their work ethic and conditioning will be contagious, and it will help them translate their game to the divison-1 level.”

The Eagles will once again play one of the most challenging schedules in the country this season. The schedule includes 12 teams that finished in the top 60 in the country last season. The out-of-conference schedule is once-again highlighted by the Ivy League schools. Yale (50th), Brown (62nd), Harvard (66th) and Dartmouth will all present tough matches for the Eagles. Two other notable out-of-conference matches this year for BC will be against cross-town rival Boston University (59th), and Florida Interna-tional University (30th). The Atlantic Coast Conference schedule will feature some of the nation’s best teams. The ACC had six teams finish in the top 20 last season, including the number one team in the nation in Duke University.

“Our schedule is extremely challenging, and features some of the best teams in the country.” said Bentley. “The ACC is arguably from top to bot-tom the most competitive conference in the nation, and our non-conference schedule is filled with very good teams as well.” “We look forward to the challenges ahead, and understand that it is a privilege to play against some of the best teams this country has to offer.”

Nigel Bentley returns to the helm of the Boston College women’s tennis program for his 10th season. Bentley has built his program into a consistently ranked regional and national contending team. He has helped lead the program to its highest-ever national rank-ing of No. 58 in the country. The team has earned this rank twice since Bentley has been the head coach in the 2000-01 and 2008-09 seasons. This season Bentley also brought in the 21st best freshman class in the nation according to The Tennis Recruiting Network.

10th SEASONKatie Molumphy McNamara, a 1992 inductee into Boston College Varsity’s Club Hall of Fame, returns for her ninth season as assistant coach of the women’s team.

Prior to her return to Boston College, McNamara served as the head professional at the Belmont Hill Club from 1996-1999, where she rejuvenated the club’s junior and ladies tennis programs. She also coached four of New England’s top junior tennis players, as well as 100 other aspiring youths. Prior to her years at Belmont Hill, McNamara was the head coach at Division III MIT for the 1995-96 season. She had also served as an assistant coach at Harvard University from 1990-1993.

For her efforts and her accomplishments, the BIG EAST named her the conference’s Female Athlete of the Decade for tennis.

A member of BC’s class of 1987, and the first player to attend Boston College on a tennis scholarship, McNamara led her squads to three BIG EAST championships while becoming the first Eagle to qualify individually for the NCAA Championships.

McNamara, who returned to Boston College to earn a master’s in business admin-istration in 1994, holds a full-time position as accounting manager at the Belmont Hill School. She is married to former BC hockey star John McNamara and the couple has four children - Kevin, Jack, Michael and Joseph.

Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus to serve the sons of Boston’s Irish immigrants. It was the first institution of higher edu-cation to be founded in the city of Boston. Today, it is one of the foremost universities in the nation, with a coeducational enrollment of 14,500 un-dergraduate and graduate students. Boston College has drawn students from all 50 states and more than 80 countries.

Boston College has grown not just in size, but also in stature and di-versity. Today, it is ranked among the top 34 national universities by US News & World Report. Its Graduate School of Social Work is listed among the nation’s top 15, also by US News, while the graduate pro-grams of its Lynch School of Education are among the top 20 and its Connell School of Nursing and Law School are among the top 30. In ad-dition, eight undergraduate programs of the Carroll School of Manage-ment placed among the top 10 in the nation according to BusinessWeek, with accounting placing first in its category. Boston College is among the nation’s most selective universities, with nearly 30,000 applications

received for its 2,250-member Class of 2013, and is numbered among the top American private research universities.

After more than a century of growth and evolution, Boston College holds fast to the ideals that inspired its Jesuit founders. The University today remains focused on its mission of helping students to develop their minds and talents while providing them with the motivation and compas-sion to use those talents in the service of other

“Deeply rooted in its Catholic and Jesuit origins, Boston College offers an education that is distinctive in spirit and content, that is doubly rich with the best of human thought and with the profound insights of faith,” writes Reverend William P. Leahy, SJ, who assumed the presidency of Boston College in 1996. “We believe that Boston College provides a transform-ing experience for young men and women.”

A continued expression of this philosophy, based on the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or care for the individual, is the faculty’s dedication to

teaching. BC faculty members have been honored for their teaching by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education, while the University’s overall commitment to teaching has been ranked among the nation’s top 20, also by US News & World Report.

A Boston College education focuses not only on intellectual development, but also on personal, spiritual and physical development. Students are asked to use their abilities, education and acquired skills to help others in need, whether in Boston or Belize. Each year, more than 5,000 under-graduates give some 375,000 hours of community service in the Boston area, while more than 650 students trade vacation for service during Spring Break. Nearly 2,000 students take part in retreats and spiritual formation activities annually.

Today, the Boston College motto “ever to excel” also extends to a broad array of extracurricular activities and opportunities ranging from sports to the arts. Athletics is integral to the University’s focus on the devel-opment of the whole person in body as well as in mind and spirit. BC offers 31 men’s and women’s varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level, and annually has one of the highest graduation rates in Division IA.

BC offers a wide variety of resources that enrich intellectual and cultural life beyond the campus gates. Among these are the Jesuit Institute; Cen-ter for Ignatian Spirituality; Center for Catholic Education; Church in the 21st Century Center; Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life; Center for Human Rights and International Justice; Center for Christian-Jewish Learning; Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics; Center on Wealth and Philanthropy; Center for Retirement Research; Sloan Center on Aging and Work; Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation and Edu-cational Policy; TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center; Center for International Higher Education; Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections; Robsham Theater Arts Center; McMullen Museum of Art; Center for Child, Family and Community Partnerships; Center for Corpo-rate Citizenship; Center for Work and Family; Center for Irish Programs; Urban Ecology Institute and Weston Observatory.
