Bob “Chino” Chiene begins his eighth season as the head coach of the Pa-cific women’s tennis program.

Over the past four seasons, Chiene’s Tigers have been rebuilding and now appear poised for a run at the Big West Conference title.

2009 saw Chiene lead Pacific to an 8-14 overall finish with a 4-4 mark against Big West Conference (BWC) opponents, improving on the Tigers’ 2008 per-formance of 6-14 overall, 1-6 BWC. Their success earned Pacific the No. 5 seed in the BWC Tournament and three All-Conference Team awards in senior Jolanta Twarowska and sophomores Jenifer Widjaja and Olga Gu-menyuk. No. 92 ranked Widjaja also became the first Tiger in the last decade

to be selected to the NCAA Tournament.

From 2006-08 Chiene guided the team to a combined 23-40 record as injuries and a limited roster forced Pacific to concede points during the season because of a lack of healthy bodies. In the BWC, the Tigers posted a combined 5-17 record in those three seasons.

During his third season in the spring of 2005, Chiene guided the Tigers to a 19-6 record, the second most victories in school history. For the second consecutive season, Pacific finished 6-0 in BWC dual matches. The Tigers, however, fell 4-2 in the BWC Championship final to Long Beach State.Chiene and the Tigers posted a 15-6 record and a perfect 6-0 in BWC matches during the 2004 dual match season. Despite earning the No. 1 seed in the Big West Championships, a young Pacific team was upset in the semi-finals by UC Irvine, 4-3.

During his first year in 2003, Chiene led the Tigers to a 5-16 mark, 4-5 in the BWC, as the interim head coach. Before coming to Pacific, Chiene had extensive coaching experience as the Head Tennis Professional at In-Shape Health Club’s West Lane Racquet Club in Stockton.

Coach Chiene continues to serve as the primary instructor for the club. He is currently in his 23rd year with In-Shape. He has trained numerous nationally ranked junior tennis players, including: Beth Berris and Jennifer Heiser (both national junior champions in addition to earning athletic scholarships at Stanford), Kristi Kern and Julie Fairchild (both nationally ranked juniors and Pacific Tennis alumnae).

Chino played tennis for four years at the University of Oregon and played at the No. 1 position as a senior. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business management at Oregon in 1976.

Chiene and his wife, Debi, who earned her teaching credential from Pacific, live in Woodbridge, Calif. The couple have two children, Kelly and Ryan.

2010 Season RecapSpring 2010:The Spring season concluded with the Tigers compiling a final record of 8-14 and a Big West Conference record of 3-5. The roster for the Tigers included team members: Sasha Fishers, Christina Goehl, Olga Gumenyuk, Julia Hansen, Summer Irvin, Kateryna Nezhura, and Jenifer Widjaja. Sasha Fisher was the only senior, and the only Tiger that wouldn’t return come the fall 2010 season. In january 2010, Jenifer Widjaja started off the season ranked No. 60 in ITA standings. Also in January, the Tigers competed in the UNLV tournament in which they had a memorable shut-out against Weber State. All the Tigers competed at the top of their game taking the win with tremendous ease. In February, The Tigers swept another team 7-0, Eastern Washington on the 14th . On the 28th the Tigers attacked yet again claiming a 7-0 win against the Highlanders while being away on the road. March brought another shut-out for the Tigers, this time the Tigers dominated Fullerton on home territory. In April, Christina Goehl received her second Big West Athlete of the Week recognition for the season and Jenifer Widjaja received her first. In late April, The Tigers competed in the Big West Tournament. The Tigers made it to the quarter-finals where they ended their season against UC Irvine 4-2. However in May, Jenifer Widjaja was selected to compete in the NCAA Singles Cham-pionship in which she faced Sanaz Marand of North Carolina. In June, Sasha Fisher, Kateryna Nezhura and Jenifer Widjaja were all recognized on the Spring Academic All-Big West List.

Fall 2010:In the Fall, the Tigers initiated their tournament season with the Cal Nike Invitational. Both Jenifer Widjaja and Susan Te made it to the final round of the tournament in their respective flights, and Julia Hansen made it to the semifinals in the blue flight. In October, Jenifer Widjaja competed at the All American Tournament Riviera in Pacific Palisades, Cali-fornia, and then joined the rest of the Tigers at the Saint Mary’s College Invitational. Day one of the tournament was a promising start for the Tigers, and two Pacificans advanced up to the semifinals. In late October, the Tigers went to the ITA Northwest Regional at Stanford , the competition was fierce, and the harsh weather conditions only added to the challenges the Tigers faced. In November, Pacific traveled to Fresno, California for the Fresno State Invitational. By the third day of the Fresno State Invitational, four Tigers had walked away with nine wins, having performed exceedingly well throughout the tournament. The fall season also welcomed three new Tigers to the team; Nikki Maciel, Susan Te, and Megan Yu. Shabby Eslami would begin competing with the Tigers come the spring 2011 season.

2010 All Conference TeamsPacific’s Jenifer Widjaja Claims Women’s Tennis Player of the Year Accolades

IRVINE, CA – Jenifer Widjaja of Pacific consummated a brilliant 2010 campaign with her selec-tion as the 2010 Big West Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Year to headline the all-conference team today. UC Irvine’s Mike Edles garnered Coach of the Year honors while Long Beach State’s Jaklin Alawi was tabbed the Freshman of the Year.

Widjaja, a native of Sao Roque, Brazil, finished 18-3 in dual matches at No. 1 singles for the Ti-gers. She has been highed as high as No. 73 in the national rankings this season and is currently listed at No. 82. The junior posted an 8-0 mark against Big West opponents in 2010, defeating fellow first team all-league player Courtney Byron of UC Irvine twice. In addition, she also beat Cal Poly’s Suzie Matzenauer, Long Beach State’s Anais Dallara and UC Santa Barbara’s Sofia Novak from the All-Big West First Team. Widjaja completed the season on a 12-match win streak.

Edles led the Anteaters to their first Big West Tournament championship last weekend in Indian Wells. UC Irvine defeated Pacific, UC Santa Barbara and six-time defending champion Long Beach State to hoist the trophy. This is the fourth time Edles has received the top coaching honor, after winning previously in 2000, 2002 and 2007. The Anteaters went 13-10 in the regular season and finished in a three-way tie for second place in the Big West at 6-2. In his 14th season at UCI, Edles will take the Anteater into the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Mississippi.

Alawi is the fourth Long Beach State player to capture top freshman honors in the six years the Big West has had the award. A native of Sofia, Bulgaria, Alawi finished 16-7 in dual matches this season. She had a 9-5 record at No. 1, 3-1 at No. 2 and 4-1 and No. 3. She also captured first team all-conference honors in doubles with teammate Rachel Manasse.
