TRANSCRIPT
A Message from the Regional CEO:
As I sit at my computer writing this note, I am cognizant that the Red Cross has been providing services in this community for more than 127 years. In that time, there have been so many changes: trolleys…trains…cars and airplanes! Telephones…cellular phones and satellite phones! Not to mention typewriters…computers and personal digital assistants! And even as all of these technological advances continue…the personal touch of the Red Cross remains strong.
During this past year, the Onondaga-Oswego Chapter continued to respond to disasters in our community. We taught people to be prepared for emergencies in their home, workplace or neighbor-hood. We trained people to respond to all types of life-threatening situations. We transmitted emergency messages keeping our mili-tary families in touch and intact. We helped provide heat to homes during the cold winter months. All of these services have been de-livered millions of times since our founding in 1881. And, though the technology makes it faster and usually easier, we continue to reach out with a helping hand to someone in need!
In addition to continuing the important work of the Red Cross, this year found us taking on new initiatives. In partnership with our colleagues at Blood Services and through the support of the Central New York Community Foundation and the Allyn Foundation we launched a diversity initiative. This outreach effort targets commu-nities on the Near West side and the South side of Syracuse. We are proud of the progress these efforts are achieving and look forward to growth in this area. We continued our leadership responsibilities which extend across the better part of Central and Northern New York assisting our colleagues with management and fund raising ef-forts. The Chapter’s Youth programs continue to grow significantly making a greater impact in our schools and community. Since Clara Barton, the women of the Red Cross have served with great passion. This past year, for the third year we celebrated the “Everyday Angel” tea with women who have supported this organization through significant contributions of blood, money and time. And, it was a year of special anniversaries as we celebrated our 10th Real Heroes Breakfast and 25th Great Chefs Dinner.
Central New York residents have supported our mission since 1881, and we strive every single day to be the best possible stewards of the gifts you entrust to us. In spite of technology and all of the changes, your trust and support remain constant and make it possible to deliver our services.
As we look to the future, you can be sure that there will be more and more changes. And with your continued help, you can be sure that the Red Cross will always be here making a difference.

When a disaster threatens or strikes, Red Cross relief teams provide on-site and follow-up disaster assistance by helping clients with a place to stay, food to eat, necessary medication or health items, clothes to wear and mental health services to address their basic human needs, recover from the disaster and resume their normal daily activities. The American Red Cross teaches individuals, families, businesses, places of worship, community groups, and students how to prevent, prepare for, mitigate and respond to disasters. Through presentations, community partnerships and events, Red Cross teaches the importance of understanding our region’s vulnerabilities and the steps needed to prepare for emergencies.
