Boston Terrier Club of Milwaukee

May 22 was the start of an AMAZING weekend we’ll never forget. At “The West Michigan Apple Blossom Cluster, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, “Cammie”, now known as CH. Raising the Bar at Dabs, finished in the Bred By Exhibitor classes at 6 months 3 weeks of age by taking BOB over some notable specials. She then went on to win two Group III’s and a Group IV.

To top off the weekend, she was chosen to win the $1,000 BBE - Best In Show, out of 18 exhibitors. Since being moved up to a Special, she won two more Group III’s at the Grand Traverse Kennel Club shows in Traverse City, Michgian, and a Group II at the Holland Kennel Club show in Marshall, Michigan.

Our thanks to all the Judges who honored Cammie with her wins.

Theshowringisaplaceofanxiety,sweat,nervesonedge,patience,victoryandaboveall“pride”…prideinthefactthat“wehavetheBestBostoninthering”.Thencomesthemomentwehaveallwaitedfor;thejudgepointstheirfinger…1st,2nd,3rd,4thandthatallpreciousmoment…“TheThrillofVictory”or“TheAgonyofDefeat”…Whatthendowedo?Howdowereact?Ouremotionstakeover,don’tthey? PresidentOlaJeanneMcColloughcalledthemeetingtoorderat8:08p.m.(EST).PresentwereOlaJeanneMcCollough,JoyceFletcher,LyndaBradley,RichardNix,DaneLaJoye,MarbyKelly(AKCDelegate),MaureenBlackwood,SharonStoll,andCarolynGastley.DickWiest,PeggyJackson,andLindaJett,wereabsent. Selection of Judges for National Specialty CarlGomesjoinedthefirstpartofthemeetingtodiscusshisproposalfortheSelectionofJudgesattheBTCANationalSpecialty.HereferredtotheoutlinedproposalwithconditionshepreviouslysubmittedtotheBoard.Heemphasizeddiscussionshehasheldwithotherparentclubs(Bulldog,Doberman,GermanShepherd,andWelshCorgi),whoalldefinethistypeofjudge’sassignmentasoneofthemostimportant.WithnobiasagainstAll-Breedjudges,GomesfeelsbreederjudgesshouldbeselectedexclusivelyforNationaljudgingassignments.ManyontheBoardwereinagreement.KenRouxistheexpectedjudgefor2011;thereforeGomeswouldliketheproposaltobecomeeffective2012.HefirmlyisunshakableregardingretainingbreederjudgesfortheNationalSpecialty.Bydoingthis,theclubisrewardingthoseeligibleasthereisnogreaterhonorthanjudgingaNationalSpecialty.Oneoftherequirementsstipulatedistobeamemberingood

standingoftheBTCA.Theover-allpurposeistoencouragebreederstobecomejudgesandfortheBTCAtoshowappreciationforthehardworkmadebycertainindividualsandtheiroutstandingjobinpromotingthebreed. McColloughwonderedhowmanybreederjudgesmightbeavailable,andGomesansweredwithhisestimateofapproximatelyadozen.Alsomentionedwasifvotingrunsona5-yearcycle,plentyjudgeswillbeavailablewithmorebecomingprominentovertime. Gomesfeelsthatwhilethemembershipbecameinvolvedinpreviousvoting,itshouldbeinthehandsoftheBoard,astheyhavetheauthoritytosetaprecedentbyselectingqualifiednames.Tenortwelvejudgeswouldbeselectedbasedonrecommendationsandthenthegeneralmembershiptovoteonthenames. TherewassomeconcernthatjudgesfortheSpecialtyhadpreviouslybeenpresentedtothemembershipandwerevotedupon,securingaslateforthenexttenyears.Thedilemmaiswhatshouldbedonewiththosejudgesalreadyselected.Wouldare-votefromthemembershipbeanacceptableanswer?Yet,FletcherremindedtheBoardthatmanyofthesejudgeshavenotbeenofficiallyaskedtojudgetheNational. Blackwoodthoughttheexistinglistofjudgesselectedshouldbe

reviewed,alongwiththewordingorphrasingintheoriginalmotion.ShecautionedtheBoardtobesensitiveoftheperceptionmembershipmighthaveonchangingprotocolwithoutinput.AshortdiscussionresultedintherealizationtherewasadiscrepancyinthelistprovidedbyMcCollough,asdecideduponMarch2004,andwhatisunderstoodtoday.Severaljudgeswerenotedtonolongerbejudgingortohavepassedaway,therebyeliminatingseveraleligiblecandidates.(Stolljoinedthemeeting8:27PM)Gomesreiteratedhisproposal’spremisewhichsetsforththattheBoardshouldcontroltheselectionprocessofjudges,withtheBoardprovidingapproximatelytennames,ratherthansendinginquirestothemembership,whichhefeelswoulddilutetheprocess.ItwasfeltthistopicwouldrequirefurtherdiscussionandaSpecialMeetingheldtocompletethedecisionprocess.(Gomesleftthemeetingat8:29p.m.) MotionbyFletchertoholdaSpecialMeetingtodiscussGomes’sproposal,factsandlistofjudgesshouldbeonOctober20,2009at8:00EST.Gastleyseconded.Motionapprovedunanimously.Board Reports President–McColloughwelcomednewmemberstotheBoardofDirectors. LaJoyesentletterstojudgesMichaelStaleyandJeanCraig,invitingthemtojudgetheBTCASpecialty,andtheybothhaveacknowledgedreceipt.Michael

StaleysentbackhislettertoLaJoyeandCraigstatedshewillforwardherletterwithinacoupleofdays.Staley’sfeeis$3perentry,twonightsinahotel,and.55amilefortheroundtripfromhishometoAtlanta. Treasurer’sReport–Nixprovidedayear-endreportwithabreakdownofmoniesineachcategory,andthebalancebeing$78,445.33.HedidinquireabouttheBToftheYearbeingaself-supportingcommitteeandnofundingwasrequiredbytheBTCA,yetreportsalossofapproximately$1058.35.TheBoardagreedthatthisdiscrepancyneedstobeclarifiedandwillasktheLiaison,PeggyJackson,torequestadetailedreportfromtheheadofthecommittee,KenRoux. LaJoyesuggestedthatservingthehorsd’oeuvresattheeventmighthavemadeadifferenceinthecostcalculations,andshouldthisfeebedebitedtotheNationalSpecialtyinsteadoftheBToftheYear.Otherwise,Nixreportedtherewasalossof$450ontheNationalSpecialtyoverall,withBlackwoodcommentingthereusuallyisaprofitof$10,000.Fletcherinquiredastothereasonfordifferenceinrevenue.LaJoyeofferedthatthehotelwasmoreexpensive–theballroomrentalitselfwasthreetimesthatof2008–andusingMB-FasaSuperintendentwasmorecostlyaswell.Additionally,theHealthCommitteeandBTCASilentAuctionsdidnotreceiveasmuchincomeasinthepast.Lastly,LaJoyestatedthattheshowbroughtinfortylessdogsandlessRVspaceswererentedaswell. NixwillfilenecessarypaperworkwiththeCommonwealthof

MassachusettsdueNovember15,2009. Nixmadeamotiontodonate$1,637.02totheCanineHealthFoundation,secondedbyFletcher.Motioncarriedunanimously. 2010NationalSpecialty–LaJoyehasasignedcontractfromtheHolidayInnSelectinAtlantaandthechargesarelessthaninConnecticut.ReservationswereopenedJuly15,2009andthecostperroomis$79,withonecomplementaryroomforeveryfortyroomnightsbooked.ThehostclubwillalsoreceiveafreeHospitalitysuiteandoneothercomplimentaryroominadditiontothoseforthefortynights. TheHostclubwillhavetwoshows–oneonMonday,whichwillbeSweepsandRegularclassesandonTuesday,RegularclasseswithoutSweeps.LaJoyeiscurrentlyworkingonfinalizingthescheduleofeventsandaskedGastleyifshepreferredthemorningorafternoonforherperformanceevents.Shestatedshepreferredtodoheroff-siteAgilityinthemorningandthenhaveRallyandObedienceintheafternoon,mainlyduetoweatherconcernsandequipmentsetup.JulieHaddyisthetrialsecretarythisyear.Gastleyhastwojudgesinmindandwillmakecontactwitheach.Fletcheraskedofthetypicalresponsetothisevent,inwhichGastleyrespondedthatapproximatelytwentytwodogsisaverage,andthefeesare$30and$15torunadogintwoclasses,whichisatypicalentry.GastleyaskedLaJoyetocheckwiththeHostclubastowhattimewouldbeanacceptablestarttimeforperformanceeventsontheTuesdayafternoon.

MarciaTerrywillactasAssistantShowChairandLaJoyereportedtohavemostofhiscommitteepositionsfilled,butwillbechangingtherepresentativeinchargeofSilentAction.MarbyKellywillactasShowSecretaryandSharonStollthevocalist. BrookBerthisworkingonalogofortheshowwithatake-offontheCoca-Colatheme–“ThingsGoBetterwithBostons”FletcherofferedtoassistJasonShuckhartwiththeBanquet–takingreservationsandworkingwiththehostcommittee.Currently,onetaskisfindingabuffetforapproximately$35perpersonratherthan$55perperson. Fletchermadeamotiontotablethediscussionof:AKCSportsmanshipAwardChair/proposal,Reporton2009BostonTerrieroftheYear,andProgressReporton2010FuturitytothenextmeetingwhentheLiaison,PeggyJacksonwouldbepresenttodiscuss.SecondedbyStoll.Motionapprovedunanimously.

AKCDelegateReport-KellystatedsheislookingintothesituationofthedogwhoseILPtestingresultedinitbeinglistedasaBoston.Shereportsthesituationisbeinginvestigated,withAKCjudgesreviewingthedogtoseeifitshouldbequalifiedasaBostonTerrier.SeveralmembersthoughtbreedclubsshouldhaveinputinthedecisionprocessandGastleyofferedtobecontactforanyquestionsand/orconcerns.MixedBreedshavetheirowncategoryforperformancecompetition;thereforetheILPcategoryisdesignedforpurebreddogs. NotmuchprogresshasbeenmaderegardingtheAKCrealignmentofgroups,despitetheconfusionandfrustrationoverthePoodlebeingconsideredintheCompanionratherthantheSportingorWorkinggroups,whichwouldbeamoreappropriatechoice.KellywillbeattendingtheAKCDelegate’smeetinginNewJerseyinSeptember15,2009andwillreportanynewfindingsontherealignment. FletcheraskedofthereasoningfortheBredbyExhibitorbeingrequiredtoremainonadogthroughtheWinnersclass.Kellyexplainedthedesireandreasoningisfortheindividualbreedertoshowaspecificdogthroughtheentireprocessandtoitschampionship. McColloughbroughttheideaofadvocatingmembersstayinginthehosthotelattheNationaltosupporttheclub,andFletchersuggestedmakingthispartofhermessageinthenextissueoftheCoasttoCoast.FletcheralsoremindedeveryonetoregisterpuppiesfortheFuturityby4monthsofage.

ProposedNewMembers-LaJoyebroughttheattentionoftheBoardtotheballotshemailed,completewithreturnaddressandpostage,andtoreturnresponsestohimwithin10daysofthismeeting.Allprospectivemembershavesignedtheclub’sCodeofEthics.UnfinishedBusiness WilliamJ.DeganTrophyforWinner’sDog–FletcheraskedtheBoardtorefertotheextensiveresearchprovidedbyDeanaJonesinordertoestablishifSarahKennedyiseligibletoreceiveandretiretheWinner’sDogChallengeTrophy.ShewonWinner’sDogin1999,2002,and2009andaccordingtohowtheruleswerestatedinthe2009SpecialtycatalogandifAKChadtomakeadecisionbasedoninformationprovided;Kennedyiseligibleforthetrophy.FletchermadeamotiontosendSarahKennedytheWinner’sDogTrophy,secondedbyLaJoye.Motionapprovedunanimously. Movingforward,wordinginthe2010premiumlistwillneedtobecorrectedandclarified.LaJoyetosendalettertoJonestorequestsheforwardthetrophytoKennedy.HewillalsosendalettertoKennedy,directlyinformingheroftheBoard’sdecision. Health Committee Survey – BlackwoodpresentedanupdatedHealthCommitteeSurvey,whichrequeststhestatusofhealthproblemswiththebreedtohelpdetermineprioritiesinaddressingproblems.Thissurveyisdistributedonceeverytenyearsanditnotlimitedtoshowdogs,sincethecommitteeisinterestedinthestatusofthebreedasawhole.AnewprogrambyTheCanineHealthInstitute,willoffertopostthesurveyfreeofchargeontheOrthopedicFoundationofAmerica(OFA)website,www.offa.org.Tofindresults,itwouldbeplacedunderthe“BreedClubSurveys”whichwilllistmanydifferentbreeds’results.Becauseeverythingiscomputerized,usingthismethodwillyieldimmediateresults. Peoplewillbeofferedtwowaystocompletethesurvey,eitherbypapercopyoronline,bothbeinganonymousandconfidential.Forthosethatwanttocompletethesurveybyhardcopy,thesurveywillbepostedontheOFAwebsiteormaileduponrequest.OFAcouldnotprovideatimelineorguaranteewhenthesurveywillbeposted,duetoOFAtimeconstraintsofdataentry. LaJoyesuggestedsubmittinganoteinformingmembershipofthesurveyintheCoasttoCoast.BlackwoodstatedsheneedsBoardApprovaltomoveforwardwith

thisprojectbeforedistributingtheinformationtothemembership.LaJoyemadeamotionforBoardapprovalofthesurveyandtoplaceanexplanationletterintheC2CandlinktoOFAonthewebsitesothemembershipcanparticipate,secondedbyFletcher.Motionapprovedunanimously. BreedStandard(letterformNormRandall)–McColloughstatedthateverymemberoftheBoardshouldhavereceivedaletterfromNormRandall,askingtheBoardtomoveforwardonthemotionforrevisingthebreedstandard.ThismotionhadbeendiscussedattheAnnualMeetingandthemotionfailed.TheoriginalBreedStandardCommitteewasdissolvedmorethan2yearsago.Ifanythingfurtheristobedoneinthefuturerelativetothebreedstandard,anewcommitteewillbeformed.LaJoyetosendalettertoNormRandallexplainingthattheBreedStandardcommitteewasdissolvedovertwoyearsagoandhewillreiteratetheverbiageaswritteninthedraftMinutesofthe2009AnnualMeeting. Trophiesfor2010National–KellyhasbeenapproachedregardingexpresseddisappointmentwithtrophiesattheNationalthisyearandshefeltthepresentationwaslackluster.Nixwouldlikeitemsotherthantowelsorcratepadstobeoffered,whichareoftenpresentedatpastBTCAandothershows.LaJoyeasthetrophychairisopentoideasforotheritemstobeoffered.Thebudgethastraditionallybeensetat$1500peryear.Stollvolunteeredtoassistwiththetrophytable. Blackwoodwonderedifthetrophybudgetof$1500reflects

themoniescollectedfortrophysponsorship,towhichLaJoyestateditdidnot.Shealsothoughtlastminutechangingoftrophysponsorshipsandnotfeelingthevalueoftheprizematchesthedonation,canoftenleadtolessthanpositivefeelingsonthepartofthecontributor/exhibitor. Itwassuggestedtopushcatalogadvertising,specificallythe¼pageads,whichwillcreateadditionalfunds.Targetingaffiliateclubstosubmittheseadswouldgivethemachanceatmoreexposure. C2C-NixbroughthisconcernstotheBoardregardingthegrowingexpensesassociatedwiththepublishingandmailingoftheC2Cclubnewsletter.Thislastissueincurredalossof$2700,duetocostsof$2500forprintingand$1200forpostage,whileonlyreceiving$1022. Astheliaison,Fletcherfeelsthereisacouplefactorsforthesizeandtherebycostofthemagazine.Committeereportsareincludedandtheclubdoesn’tsendseparatemailingsforshowpacketsortheannualmeetingannouncement.ShefeelstheC2CisonebenefiteverymemberoftheBTCAreceivesandisalsoverywellreceived. Tohelpoffsetexpensesasuggestionwasmadetopossiblysellthefrontcoverspace,butFletcherwasopposed,asitwouldpushthepublicationfromanewslettertothestatusof“magazine”.NixvoicedthathefeelstheC2Cisalreadyamagazine. • Grant#1105-“UnderstandingtheDynamicsofCanineInfluenzaVirus:TransmissioninDogPopulationsandInterventionStrategiesforReducingTransmission”-theresultsofthisstudywillprovidevaluableinformationtodogshoworganizersresponsibleforthehealthofdogs,andothersingroupsettings.TheHealthCommitteeisrequestinga$2500donationtoparticipateinthisgrant.• Grant#1204–“DevelopmentofaDiagnosticMethodforCanineAtopicDermatitis”–theproposalistodevelopasimplebloodtesttotellifaparticulardogishyper-reactivetocertainitems.A$1500donation.• Grant#1188A–“CapacityforRespiratory-basedThermoregulationinBrachycephalicbreeds–toinvestigatehowbrachycephalicbreedscantolerateairtravel.Researcherswouldliketohaveperimetersoutlinedsoownersandairlinesknowsafetemperaturerangesforthesebreeds.Askingfora$1500donation. Fletchermadeamotiontoapprovethefundingoftheseproposalsasoutlinedandreleasemoneyforthesegrants,secondedbyStoll.Motionpassed.
