Jeff ALDERHead Coach

Eighth SeasonLiberty, ‘91

Under Jeff Alder, the Liberty men’s soccer program has fi rmly en-trenched itself among the elite of the Big South Conference. In 2001, Alder took over a program which had been a consistent winner, build-ing it into a perennial contender for the Big South Conference ti tle, as evidenced by the Flames’ fi rst Big South Championship last season and initi al NCAA Tournament appearance. Alder, a long-ti me fi xture on the Liberty campus, enters his eighth season as the head coach of the Liberty men’s soccer program. He spent nine years as an assistant and four seasons as a player for 21-year head coach Bill Bell, before taking over as the program’s third head coach in 2001, giving Alder more than 20 years on Liberty Mountain. During his seven years at the helm of the men’s soccer program, the Flames not only captured their fi rst Big South Conference ti tle, but have always recorded a top four fi nish in the conference’s regular sea-son standings. Liberty has fi nished fi rst (2001) in the Big South regular-season standings once, placed second three ti mes (2003, 2004, 2007) third (2002, 2005) twice and fourth (2006) once during his tenure. Stu-dent-athletes under Alder have also combined to earn two Freshman All-American honors, a ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American ac-colade, eight all-region recogniti ons, three Big South Freshman of the Year awards and 30 all-conference selecti ons, including 12 fi rst-team members. In additi on, he has seen eight of his players move on to the professional ranks and four picked in the Major League Soccer Draft . Alder has also been the driving force behind the growing visibility of the Liberty soccer program, both regionally and nati onally. Last season, Liberty was ranked every week among the top teams in the Nati onal Soccer Coaches Associati on of America (NSCAA) South Atlanti c Region Poll. In additi on, the Flames have traditi onally played several highly-ranked programs each season.

Under Jeff Alder the Libert

Last season, Alder saw his 2007 squad capture the Big South Title and move on to the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst ti me in program history. The Flames recorded the second-highest win total in school history with a 13-5-2 mark and fi nished second in the Big South with a 5-1 regular-season ledger. Defense was one of the keys to Liberty’s success, as the Flames posted nine shutouts and held opponents to a 1.07 goals against average. Al-der’s team outscored opponents 36-22 and allowed only one total goal in seven home games during the season. The Liberty head coach also saw forward Adrian Bumbut, who fi nished his career among the program’s all-ti me scoring leaders, move on to play professionally. In additi on, de-fender Mike Gelatt became the program’s fi rst ESPN The Magazine Aca-demic All-American. In 2006, Alder meshed a team of experienced veterans and several newcomers to post a 9-6 overall mark, overcoming early injury to several key players to close the season with fi ve consecuti ve victories, before fall-ing in overti me in the semifi nals of the Big South Championship. He also saw two of his players go on to play professionally and for their country’s nati onal team, Trinidad and Tobago, in Darryl Roberts and Osei Telesford. In additi on, under Alder’s guidance, Roberts fi nished his career as the school’s all-ti me scoring leader. In 2005, the Flames lost several key players to injury during the pre-season, yet even aft er a rough start, Alder had Liberty in a positi on to claim fi rst place in the conference going into the last day of the regular season, as the Flames fi nished 6-8-2. The previous season, Alder’s team once again overcame several inju-ries to key players and a tough schedule to fi nish with a 9-10-2 overall mark and a second-place Big South regular-season fi nish. Liberty fi nished second in the Big South with a 4-2-1 record and 8-9-1 overall under Alder in 2003. He guided the Flames to an 11-8-2 record, including a 4-2-1 mark in Big South play during the 2002 season. Later, Roberts was named the Liberty program’s fi rst Freshman All-American.

Despite a 9-10 overall record in his fi rst season in 2001, the team fi n-ished the regular season ti ed for fi rst place in the Big South with a 5-2 league record and reached the ti tle game of the Big South Champion-ship. As an assistant coach, Alder served as the recruiti ng coordinator, a role in which he oversaw the recruiti ng process, including evaluati ons, home visits and offi cial visits. His other responsibiliti es included assisti ng in the preparati on, implementati on and supervision of daily practi ce sessions, scouti ng of opponents, team travel and scheduling. Alder also spent six years as the Director of Academics for Athleti cs, supervising the overall athleti c academic support program for all of Lib-erty’s student-athletes. In the fall of 2002, he relinquished those responsibiliti es to focus all of his ti me and energy into the men’s soccer program. Alder has acquired coaching experience under the directi on of Bruce Are-na and George Gelnovatch at the University of Virginia Camp of Champi-ons. He has also coached at the state and district levels for the Virginia Olympic Development program and has served under Gelnovatch as a guest evaluator with the U.S. Under-18 Nati onal Team. Two years ago, Alder att ended the United States Nati onal Team Camp as a guest of coach Bruce Arena, prior to the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. He holds a NSCAA Nati onal Coaching Diploma, a NSCAA Advanced Na-ti onal Diploma with Disti ncti on and a NSCAA Premier Diploma. Alder has served as a site supervisor for the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tourna-ment for fi ve years (2003-2007) and is a member of the NCAA South At-lanti c Regional Advisory Committ ee. He has also been a voti ng member for the NSCAA Top 25 College Rankings, the past three seasons. Alder received his bachelor’s degree in business management from Liberty in 1991. While playing at Liberty, he was a four-year starter on the men’s soccer team. In his fi rst season as a Flame, Alder earned the 1987 Most Promis-ing Freshman Award. He was also named all-conference in 1987 and was given the Coaches Award and made the Dean’s List in 1989. Aft er posti ng a 7-10-2 record in his freshman season, the Flames went on to have three straight winning seasons in Alder’s fi nal three years on the team. During his senior year, he helped lead the Flames to a 12-2-2 record. Jeff , his wife Lori, son Chandler (12) and daughter Grayson (6), reside in the Lynchburg area.

Dean Short begins his fi ft h season as an assistant coach for the Lib-erty men’s soccer program. He assists in all aspects of program including re-cruiti ng, scouti ng, practi ce instructi on, goalkeeper coaching and game strat-egy. With his assistance, the Flames climbed to new heights in 2007, captur-ing their fi rst Big South Championship. A goalkeeper during his playing days, Short’s work with freshman keeper Paul Gilbert paid dividends, as the fi rst-year keeper went on to post eight shut-outs and a 1.08 goals-against-average in earning Big South Freshman of the Year honors. “Dean has been a great mentor for the players spiritually and has done a good job in the development of our goalkeepers and fi eld play-ers,” states head coach Jeff Alder. “He is a huge asset to our program.” Short, a 2002 Liberty graduate, was a four-year starter in goal for the Flames, completi ng his career with a 35-22-4 record. He also posted a 1.12 goals-against-average and recorded 19 shutouts during his ti me at Liberty. Both marks rank third all-ti me in program history. Short earned Big South all-conference fi rst-team honors three straight seasons (1999-2001), one of only three Flames in program history to do so. In additi on, he was named to the Nati onal Soccer Coaches Asso-ciati on of America (NSCAA) All-South Atlanti c Region team in 1999 and 2000. In the summer of 2005, Short earned a NSCAA Nati onal Coaching Di-ploma. He assists each summer with several camps.
