fice and physical fitness among others. At the same time, athletic participation brings together men and women students from diverse ethnic, socio-economic, cultural and geographic backgrounds possessing various, unique skills working together towards com-mon success, and a commitment to excellence.

Furthermore, athletics provides the campus community, our urban neighbors in Chicago, and alumni the opportunity for participation in the form of recreation, and as spectators for intercollegiate competition.

The Athletic Department also

has a unique opportunity and responsibility, as the most visible messenger of the DePaul story, to represent the highest qualities and standards of our education to an observant community, state, and nation. A clear, positive exposure of DePaul University, through ath-letics, can enhance the University’s mission and image, and directly effect the quality of faculty, enroll-ment and development.

Not unimportant to our Mis-sion is the emotion, school spirit and morale, so crucial to the soul of the University, that can be uplifted through participation in athletics.

A member of the DePaul athletic com-munity for over four decades, Pat Savage enters his third season as head coach for the DePaul men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs and his fourth season as a member of the coaching staff. The 2006-07 campaign saw the program make vast improvements in Savage’s first season as head coach. DePaul’s first indi-vidual BIG EAST Conference Champion was crowned when freshman Brad Millar won the hammer throw at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Four Blue De-mons competed in the NCAA Outdoor Midwest Regional Championships and 10

new DePaul records were set between the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. In back-to-back weeks during the outdoor season, the Blue Demons swept the team titles at the Chicagoland Championships and the Elmhurst Invitational, respectively. Success continued during Savage’s second year at the helm of the program in 2007-08. Thirteen school records, a program high, were broken over the course of the indoor and outdoor season. Two more BIG EAST champions were crowned when Millar defended his hammer title, and freshman Melissa Fraser won the javelin throw at the Outdoor Conference Championships. Fraser also made an appearance at the NCAA Outdoor National Champion-ships. She was the first student-athlete to qualify for the national meet under Coach Savage, and the first since 2004 when Erin Moffett ran the 10,000m. Savage’s teams have also demonstrated excellence in the classroom, with 38 members of the 2007-08 track and field and cross country squads making the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. For the second year in a row, both men’s and women’s cross country teams earned All-Academic Team honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Millar, along with fellow student-athlete Mary Cate Quiett, were named to the NCAA Division I All-Academic Team, while Allyson Petersen, Stephanie Williams, Gabe Vargas, Kyra Coffey, and Richard Fugiel were given Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar honors. Savage has an extensive coaching background in the Chicagoland area, serving as the head cross country and track coach at DePaul Academy (1966-68), St. George High School in Evanston (1968-69) and on the Niles West

High School staff in Skokie from 1969-2002. Pat stayed on to coach with his son, Danny Savage, until 2005. He was the head cross country coach during his entire tenure and spent six of those years on the staff as the head track and field coach in the 1980’s. He also coached the cross country, track and marathon teams at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines from 1971-2003. Since 1980, he has served as the director and head coach of the Niles West/Oakton Runner’s Club. Though he still serves as director, his wife, Melissa, assumed coaching responsibilities in 2007. Savage’s teams have also experienced tremendous success during his career as he has tutored 39 National Junior

College All-Americans and four NJ-CAA national champions. In 2002 his team won the NJCAA National Championship in the marathon. Along with his national success, Sav-age guided over 200 All-State athletes and 19 Skyway Conference cross country champions while his teams have won eight NJCAA regional titles. Savage’s runners club also won 17 Chicago Area Runner’s Associa-tion team titles. Savage has been an eight-time NJCAA Region IV Coach of the Year and was elected to the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 1989. He has also been named St. Mel’s High School Man of the Year and was inducted into DePaul’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. He has served as the Presi-dent of the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association, the Illinois Community College Track and Cross Country Coaches Associa-tion and the Chicago Area Runners Association. In 1995, the Niles West Indian Cross Country Invitational was renamed the Patrick J. Savage

Head Coach // Third Season

Invitational. During the 1980’s and 1990’s it was the largest high school- sponsored cross country meet in the nation, reaching a peak of 73 boys teams and 69 girls squads. In addition to coaching, Savage remains active in the Chicagoland running community. Most recently, he served as the head race referee for the 2006 and 2007 Chicago Marathon, and head men’s referee in 2008. An outstanding collegiate runner, Savage was a two-time captain (junior and senior seasons) and MVP of both the Blue Demon track and cross country teams during his junior year and holds a pair of degrees from DePaul.

The greatest sprinter in DePaul history, Dave Dopek is in his 14th season as an assistant coach with the Blue Demons. Before beginning his coaching career, Dopek inked his name into the DePaul history books. He became the school’s first individual (or team) to win an NCAA championship when he captured the 200-meter title at the 1995 NCAA Indoor Championship at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Dopek also finished second

in the 200-meters at the 1995 outdoor championships. He has helped a number of student-athletes qualify for the BIG EAST

Conference Championships, as well as the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. Last season, during the 2007-08 indoor conference championships, he guided student-athlete Ryan Moore to a runner-up finish in the 400m. Three sprint records were broken during the outdoor season when Stephanie Williams broke Sheri Bean’s 1987 100m record, improved upon her own 200m record, and the quartet of Williams, Ivy Moffett, Kyra Coffey, and Shauna Lurey broke the 4x100m relay record during the Purdue Invitational.

Dopek’s success on the national scene continued when he won a gold medal in the 200-meter dash and was a member of the title-winning 4x100-meter relay team at the 1995 United States Olympic Festival.

Dave has also experienced success on the international level. In 1995, he was on the 4x100-meter relay team that took gold at the World University Games Fukuoka, Japan. While there, Dopek also took home a silver medal in the 200-meters. The following year he participated in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta.

During his four years as a student-athlete, Dopek was the staple of the program, winning seven individual Great Midwest Conference championships. The sprinter claimed individual titles in the indoor 200-meter in 1993 and 1995, indoor 400-meter in 1994 and 1995, the outdoor 400-meter in 1994 and 1995, and the outdoor 200-meter in 1995. He was also a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that took the outdoor titles in 1992 and 1995 and was a part of the 1995 4x100-meter relay championship squad. For his efforts, he was named the Outstanding Athlete of the 1995 Great Midwest Conference Outdoor Championships. He also earned DePaul’s Most Valuable Performer in indoor track three times and was the outdoor MVP in 1995.

Dopek’s success at DePaul was not limited to just the track. Dave was a member of the Great Midwest Conference All-Academic team in both the 1993-94 and 1994-95 school years.

A member of the DePaul coaching staff since 2005, Brandon Murer works with the Blue Demon throwers and contributes extensive experience on all levels to the program.

The last three seasons saw the DePaul throwers ex-perience tremendous success under Murer’s guidance. Brad Millar became the first Blue Demon to win a BIG EAST Conference individual title as he won the ham-

mer throw at the 2007 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Two more con-ference champions were crowned in 2008 when Millar successfully defended his title, and Melissa Fraser became DePaul’s first female BIG EAST Champion for DePaul when she took the javelin throw title. Fraser went on to become the first female thrower to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. In addition, the Blue Demon throwers set seven new DePaul records over the last three years while posting six qualifying marks for the NCAA Regional Champi-onships, culminating in one berth to the National Championships.

Murer began his college career at Indiana State, where he was a four-year varsity letterwinner followed by two seasons with the Sycamores as an assistant coach. As a student assistant in 1997-98, he helped six throwers earn All-Mis-souri Valley Conference accolades. He also helped guide a hammer thrower to a MVC championship.

During the 1999-2000 season, Murer was named a volunteer assistant at In-diana State where he worked with all throwers and multi-event athletes. He helped three student-athletes break school records, 20 meet records and three MVC records. Under Murer’s direction he developed 18 MVC placers, six all-conference athletes and one All-American weight thrower.

Following his successful collegiate coaching stint, Murer was named an as-sistant coach at Danville Community High School in Indiana. As the throws coach at Danville, he developed the Indiana State High School runner-up in shot put (2000) and several regional and sectional champions.

Along with his duties with the program’s throwers, Murer serves as the re-cruiting coordinator.

Murer graduated from Indiana State University in 1997 with a degree in Fine Arts. He currently resides in the Chicago suburbs with his wife, Samantha.

The DePaul men’s and women’s cross country teams welcomed Tracy Fleischhacker to the athletic staff during the fall of 2008 season as an assistant coach. In December of 2008 she moved to a volun-teer position. Fleischhacker, a former Minnesota Golden Gopher, participated in both track and field and cross county while earning her undergraduate degree in

Applied Economics. As captain of the 2004 cross country squad, she helped lead the team to a fourth place finish in both the Big Ten and NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. In 2008, Fleischhacker was inducted into Chicago’s Luther North High School Athletic Hall of Fame for her outstanding achievements in cross country and track and field, in addition to contributions to the school as a whole. She was a six-time all-state honoree in both sports as well as earn MVP accolades multiple times throughout her career. During her senior year, she initiated a fundraiser to finance the installation of a new track facility at her school. She was invited back by her coach, David Grim, for the ground breaking event. Her coaching experience includes working as a volunteer assistant for the University of Illinois-Chicago in 2006 and Luther North High School in 2008. Fleischhacker comes from a family of runners. Three of her nine siblings ran for Division I programs including Loyola-Chicago, UIC, and Northeast-ern University. She currently works as a Product Change Manager for Kraft Foods while residing in Chicago, and started MBA studies at the University of Chicago in January.

Andrew Craycraft, an accomplished middle-dis-tance runner at St. Joseph’s University and the Uni-versity of North Carolina, joined the DePaul Athletic staff as an assistant coach the for cross country and track and field teams in 2008. Craycraft assists both squads with recruiting and developing middle distance and distance runners. During his freshman and sophomore seasons

at St. Joseph’s, Craycraft set school records in the 800m (1:48.83) and the 4x800m relay (7:25); records which still stand today. He also broke the school record in the 500m when he won the race during the 2002 Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America Championship meet. At UNC, he won the 800m with a time of 1:52.49 at the 2003 ACC Conference Indoor Championships. His best time in the event was 1:48.91, which set a UNC men’s indoor record. Most recently, Craycraft served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Michigan State University women’s cross country and track and field teams. While Andrew was with the Spartans, they made their fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Cross Country Championships, in addition to producing two All-Great Lakes All- Region athletes. During the track and field season, MSU sent four student-athletes to the Mid-East Regional Championships. From there, Nicole Bush qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 3,000m steeplechase and was named an All-American. Off the track, Craycraft has experienced tremendous success as both a student-athlete and a coach. During his 2004 season at UNC he was named to the ACC Academic All-Conference team, in addition to being given the Athletic Director’s Student-Athlete Award. While coaching at MSU, the cross country squad was ranked 32nd in the nation with an overall team GPA of 3.61. All-Academic Team honors were bestowed up them by the Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Association. After earning his degree in History from UNC, Craycraft went on to earn a Juris Doctor from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich. He currently works as a legal assistant for the Center for Disability and Elder Law in Chicago, Ill.

Ryan Moore enters his second year as a member of the DePaul track and field coaching staff. Last year, he had the unique opportunity to both coach and compete for the Blue Demons. Moore earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Fresno State in the spring of 2007. While at Fresno, he was a member of the Bulldogs’ track and field team all four years. Highlights of his

career include being a two-time Western Athletic Conference champion in the 400m hurdles, a school record holder in the same event with a time of 50.51, and qualifying for the 2006 NCAA National Championships. After graduating, Ryan enrolled in the DePaul masters program for Public Service Administration. With one year of indoor track eligibility left, he seized the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level one last time. After competing in the 400m at the Meyo Invitational, Moore landed himself a BIG EAST Conference qualifying mark of 48.44. During the BIG EAST Indoor Championships, Ryan posted a team-best time of 47.85 and placed second. Because of his success and efforts on and off the track, Moore was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the season. He currently serves as the graduate assistant for both the track and field and cross country programs.

One of the nation’s most widely respected leaders in inter-collegiate athletics and a driving force behind the continuing expansion and development of DePaul’s athletics program, Jean Lenti Ponsetto is now in her seventh year as DePaul’s Director of Athletics and her 34th as a member of the Blue Demon athletics family.

Jeanne was named to her current position on July 1, 2002 and the Blue Demons have experienced tremendous success

both on and off the playing field ever since. Ponsetto also guided the DePaul efforts in 2003 when the University announced it would join the BIG EAST Conference in 2005.

An advocate for student-athlete welfare, Ponsetto initiated and provided the leader-ship for the Sullivan-McGrath Athletics Capital Campaign which has yielded the fund-ing resources for the renovation of Wish Soccer Field, the creation of the Cacciatore Softball Stadium, the renovation of the Cherry Family Indoor Track at the Ray Meyer Center, and DePaul’s long-term tenancy at Lane Stadium.

During her seven years at the helm of the department, 14 of the 15 Blue Demon athletic programs have represented the school in NCAA championships including the men’s soccer program’s initial trip to the NCAA Tournament after winning the BIG EAST Conference regular season title. Success has also come in the classroom during Ponsetto’s tenure as the Athletic Director as over 580 Blue Demon student-athletes have been named conference Academic Honor Rolls.

Ponsetto’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by her colleagues. For the second time in her career; Ponsetto was presented NACWAA’s Administrator of the Year Award in 2003, and was the organization’s president in 2005-06.

A four-sport standout for DePaul, Ponsetto boasts a wealth of experience in three areas of DePaul athletics: as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator. She had spent seven years as the senior associate director of athletics after serving 12 years as the asso-ciate director and two as an assistant director before assuming her current job in 2002.

Aside from her duties at DePaul, she has served on numerous NCAA committees including a joint NCAA/USOC Task Force. Ponsetto currently serves the NCAA as a member of the Division I Women’s Basketball Task Force and is an NCAA Cham-pion, a program highlighting key NCAA Administrators to act as spokesperson from the membership on NCAA issues. Ponsetto also chairs the Honda Awards Board of Directors and the Wade Trophy Selection Committee, the Past President of NACWAA, and a member of the NACDA Division I-AAA Board of Directors. In recent years, Ponsetto served on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Issues Committee, the Di-vision I Recruiting/Early Scholarship Offer Working Group, the NCAA Amateurism Clearinghouse Advisory Group and the NCAA Work/Life Balance Task Force. This past summer, Ponsetto was named the Second Vice President for the I-AAA Athletics Director Association.

Ponsetto spent a five-year term as Chair of the 49-member NCAA Division I Cham-pionships/Competition Cabinet, a position she assumed in 1998 after one year as a member of the Cabinet. She was the first woman to chair a Cabinet and had the longest tenure as a Cabinet chair. Under Ponsetto’s leadership, the Championships/Competi-tion Cabinet had several accomplishments, most notably the expansion of champion-ship opportunities to include all conference champions, an improved awards program, a

The Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., became DePaul University’s 11th president on July 1, 2004. Since his inaugura-tion, he has led the successful completion of the university’s prior strategic plan and creation of its current six-year plan, VISION twenty12.

His leadership and expertise stem from a broad range of higher education experiences. He was an administrator with St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y., from 1996 to 1999, first

as assistant dean of Notre Dame College and later as associate dean of the university’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Concurrently he served as an assistant professor of higher education in St. John’s Graduate School of Education.

He gained a university-wide perspective as executive vice president and chief operat-ing officer at Niagara University in Niagara Falls, N.Y., from 2000 to 2004, where he directed the university’s strategic planning efforts and daily operations of the campus.

Adding research to experience, Father Holtschneider led two national studies of ex-amining trends in governance and leadership in American Catholic colleges and universi-ties. He is the author and co-author of one book and numerous articles on U.S. higher

education and Catholic higher education, as well as a frequent consultant and speaker on these topics.

Fr. Dennis’ expertise has led to service on numerous external committees and boards. He is a member of the National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management, which promotes excellence and best practices in management, finances and human resource development of the Catholic Church in the U.S. In addition, he currently serves as a trustee of Niagara University and the Chicago History Museum. He also is a member of Mayor Richard M. Daley’s Chicago 2016 Committee, working to bring the Olympics to Chicago.

A Detroit native, he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Niagara in 1985. He studied for the priesthood at Mary Immaculate Seminary in Northampton, Pa., and was ordained in 1989. Father Holtschneider studied at Harvard University and received his doctorate in administration, planning and social policy in 1997 after writing a dis-sertation on the early history of financial aid in the United States. He has been a case researcher and writer for Harvard’s schools of Education, Medicine and Public Health.

After ordination, Father Holtschneider served as director and then rector of the Vin-centian Community’s college seminary program at Ozone Park in New York City. While in New York, he served as a clinical associate professor of higher education at the State University of New York at Buffalo, teaching one doctoral seminar each fall.

Currently, he is a faculty member and board member of the Boston College Insti-tute for Administrators in Catholic Higher Education. He continues to teach at Boston College’s summer Institute for Administrators in Catholic Higher Education.

review of the Association’s bylaws with regard to playing and practice seasons, authori-zation and format structure for all championships, and establishment of a comprehen-sive certification process for the I-A Football Bowl Games and certified events.

Ponsetto has received several awards for her outstanding work at DePaul and for her leadership serving the NCAA members and student-athletes. At the 1998 Final Four the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association named her Administrator of the Year. In addition, the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) named her Administrator of the Year. Subsequently, Ponsetto was annu-ally appointed to the NACWAA Board of Directors.

A gifted public speaker, Ponsetto was the Mistress of Ceremonies at the 2002 Honda Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Awards Program and has been a presenter at NCAA Regional Compliance seminars and NCAA Student Leadership Conferences. She is also a frequent guest on radio and television programs regarding issues that face intercollegiate athletics, and has served as a color analyst for Fox Sports Net during telecasts for college basketball, volleyball and softball contests. In 2000 she served as a studio analyst for ESPN during the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Since moving into an administrative position over 20 years ago, Ponsetto has had a significant impact on the status of the DePaul intercollegiate sports scene. She in-troduced four women’s sports - indoor and outdoor track, cross country and women’s soccer - to varsity status at DePaul. Under her direction DePaul has built several athletic facilities including the Sullivan Athletic Center (2000), the Ray Meyer Fitness Recreation Center (1999), and the recently completed projects in Cacciatore Stadium, Wish Field and the Cherry Family Indoor Track. Recently she negotiated contracts with Ruffled Feathers Golf Club as home for the men’s golf program as well as Lane Tech Stadium as a home for the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams.

Ponsetto, who is a member of the DePaul Athletic Hall of Fame, began her asso-ciation with Blue Demon athletics as a member of the tennis, volleyball and women’s basketball teams in 1974-75. She participated in softball when it was added as a varsity sport two years later.

Following graduation in 1978 she was named the school’s first assistant women’s basketball coach by then-head coach Doug Bruno. Ironically, she then hired him as head women’s coach when he returned to that position in 1988.

Jeanne’s work within the Chicago sports scene was been well chronicled. In 2004 Ponsetto was named one of the top 100 most influential women in Chicago by the Chicago Sun-Times. In 2007 she was inducted into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame, whose membership includes Ray Meyer, Mike Ditka, Walter Payton and Michael Jordan.

Married to former Blue Demon basketball star Joe Ponsetto, now Chief of Special Prosecution’s Bureau in the Illinois Attorney General’s office, she comes from a family intertwined in education and athletics. One brother, Frank Lenti, is head football coach at Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago. Another brother, David, is an assistant under Frank with the Caravan. Two other brothers work for the DePaul athletics department as Michael is the Director of Athletic Facilities and Eugene is the school’s all-time win-ningest coach as the head softball coach. Jeanne’s sister Marilyn, a former elementary school teacher in south suburban Dolton, is a DePaul graduate, as are Eugene and David.

Student-athletes at DePaul University are just that: students first and athletes second. Earning a degree is a top priority for every student-athlete at DePaul.

nIn DePaul’s first three years of BIG EAST Conference membership, a total of 367 student-athletes were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. A total of 133 student-athletes were named to the team in 2007-08 after 127 had a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the recognition in 2006-07. Following the first BIG EAST campaign in 2005-06, a total of 107 earned league academic recognition.

nFour of DePaul’s 15 athletic programs claimed the BIG EAST Team Excellence Award in 2007-08 for having the top team GPA among the league program’s in each sport. Women’s basketball, women’s cross country, men’s soccer and women’s tennis held the top team GPA among their peers. Individually, Allie Quigley from the women’s basketball team and women’s tennis student-athlete Dunja Antunovic were selected as the 2007-08 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellend Award winners their respective sports. The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community.

nA total of 107 student-athletes were named to DePaul University’s Dean’s List for the Fall 2007 and Winter 2008 academic quarters, while women’s basketball player Allie Quigley was named the NACDA I-AAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Brian Visser (first team) and Eric Hermosillo (second team) of the men’s soccer team were named NSCAA/adidas All-Scholar Region honorees. Additionally, Visser was named a NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-American. Overall in the 2007-08 academic year, DePaul’s student-athletes turned in a cumulative 3.258 GPA - the highest in DePaul Athletics history.

n In the newest data submitted to the NCAA, the commitment of DePaul student-athletes toward graduation is evident. DePaul’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for women’s outdoor track and field is 972, while the men’s team boasts a 980. This rate measures both the eligibility and retention of student-athletes receiving any level of athletics aid. The women’s basketball, women’s tennis and softball teams were recognized by the NCAA for their outstanding academic APR performances. Each program was recognized by the NCAA for having multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. DePaul’s total of three teams honored represents the fourth-highest total among all BIG EAST schools while the women’s basketball is one of two BIG EAST members to earn the Public Recognition Award and just one of six programs in a BCS conference to be on the list.

n This off-the-field success comes from key factors at DePaul. First, DePaul’s academic standards require student-athletes to: -complete a minimum of eight hours of placeable credits per quarter, -a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.0, -meet with athletic academic advising staff.

nDespite its growing enrollment, DePaul maintains a small school atmosphere. DePaul boasts an excellent faculty-to-student ratio of 17-1, although classes of 15-25 students are quite common. This provides an ideal setting for personal academic attention - one of DePaul’s most unique qualities.

nA student who is not as well prepared may need more help with understanding how to succeed in the college system. Ultimately, the student makes the decision. DePaul provides a strong academic support system for each student-athlete, but it’s the student’s motivation and ability to take the assistance that makes the difference. This approach helps students build the decision-making skills they need to succeed in life.

n Handling a college sports schedule can be very demanding, but understanding the stress and time demands that accompany college athletics allows DePaul’s Athletic Academic Advising department to give each student the sup-port and guidance needed to launch a successful academic career. By working closely with an extensive network of professors, administrators and student-athletes, the advisors insure that each Blue Demon reaches his or her full academic potential. The staff personally assists each student-athlete with class selection, scheduling, tutoring, and, most importantly, establishing good study skills. They also communicate regularly with professors about each student’s course work and maintain records of each student-athlete’s progress toward graduation. The advisors continue assisting student-athletes through graduation, not just until their eligibility expires. Their services include tutoring, advising, course selection and conducting the NCAA Life Skills Program.

nTo help facilitate the success of student-athletes, Athletic Academic Advising works closely with the offices of Professional Career Development and Placement, Residence Life, University Ministry, Student Financial Aid, Student Life, Student Counseling Services, and the Writing Center. At a high-profile school like DePaul, that’s important.

n The 2008-09 academic year will be the 30th for The BIG EAST Conference. While the league has gone through membership changes since its birth, it has never been stronger. This academic year will mark the conference’s fourth year as the nation’s largest Division I-A conference.

n The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of ath-letic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse Universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance.

n While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based pro-grams, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student-athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably shows a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics.

n Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 25 national champi-onships in six different sports and 125 student-athletes have won individual national titles.

n The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 athletes.

n The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student-athletes. The conference has enjoyed long-standing relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC.

n BIG EAST teams earned their share of recognition at the highest levels in 2007-08. Four women’s teams advanced to their respective NCAA Final Fours: Connecticut field hockey and women’s basketball, Notre Dame soccer and Syracuse lacrosse.

n Individually in men’s sports, Villanova’s Bobby Curtis was the NCAA outdoor track champion in the 5,000 meters. Connecticut’s O’Brian White won the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, the highest individual honor in soccer. Two years ago, BIG EAST male and female student-athletes were Hermann Trophy winners.

n In men’s basketball, the BIG EAST tied its own record set in 2006 by earning eight NCAA Championship bids. BIG EAST women’s teams have received eight NCAA invitations in each of the past two years. The combined 16 men’s and women’s berths in 2008 was an NCAA first.

n The BIG EAST continued to produce student-athletes who were at the fore-front of athletic and academic achievement. Nineteen BIG EAST players were chosen to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams, including eight first-team selections.

n The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A group in 2005-06 when five new members began competing. The new schools were: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

n BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 34 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S.

n The BIG EAST has always been able to boast that some of its best students are also some of its best athletes. More than 370 student-athletes have earned Academic All-America honors.

n Connecticut’s Rebecca Lobo, one of the most heralded women’s basketball players in the history of the sport, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 2008. Lobo, a two-time BIG EAST Player of the Year, led the Huskies to the 1995 NCAA national championship.

n The BIG EAST has enjoyed tremendous basketball success, especially in this decade. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last 10 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken five of the last nine NCAA titles.

n While BIG EAST basketball games are regular sellouts at cam-pus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG

EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden, attendance figures also are significant in soccer, women’s basketball and baseball games.
