RANDY THOMASDirector – women’s cross country anD track anD FielD

Randy Thomas is entering his 15th year as the program director of the women’s cross country and track and field teams at Boston College. He spent the previous 14 seasons as the director of both the men and women’s track and field programs. On March 3, 2008 the Boston College track and field program split after hiring a full-time head men’s coach for the first time in school history.

Thomas has been a part of the Boston College program for 20 years. Thomas’ past and current successes speak for themselves as he has guided Eagle athletes to 40 All-America awards over the past 16 years.

The women’s cross country squad has competed in eight NCAA Championships, including eight in the past twelve seasons. Thomas has also trained athletes who qualified individually for the national event. Most recently, junior Mallory Champa earned All-America awards in 2006 for her 38th –place finish at the NCAAs. Other notable athletes, including Laurel Burdick , Maria Cicero and Jennifer Kramer all gained All-America status after placing in the top-ranks at their respective NCAA Championships.

The 2001 women’s team defended their NCAA Region I team championship prior to finishing sixth in the national event. His team’s success on the cross-country trails led his peers at the United States Track and Field Association to honor him as the 2001 National Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. In 2000, his women’s cross-country team captured the Big East Championship and went on to finish fourth in the NCAA meet. This placing represented the highest finish at a national championship for a Boston College women’s team in any sport in school history.

Thomas also helped bring the first national championship for women’s athletics to the Heights, coaching Shannon Smith to the 2001 NCAA Championship in the 3,000-meter run.

Overall, Thomas, who served exclusively as the schools cross country coach during the first seven years of his tenure, has produced a total of 47 All-America selections, three national junior champions and one Pan-American Games gold medalist.

Before accepting his current position, Thomas was an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Massachusetts, his alma mater. The first-ever Division I All-America in UMass cross country and track and field history, Thomas was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982.

Thomas, who received his master’s degree in business administration from Boston University, resides in Medway, Mass., with his wife, Marcy, and their son, Ian, who currently runs on the BC track & field team.

2008 Boston College traCk & field 2008 Boston College traCk & fieldDIREctoR of AtHlEtIcs

Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athletics on September 16, 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. DeFilippo has made a significant impact on the program internally, in the Boston community, and from a national standpoint while molding it into one of the nation’s elite both on and off the playing field. He also led the program through one of the most significant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

DeFilippo is credited with spearheading efforts to strengthen BC’s athletics program in a number of areas, including facilities, fundraising, staffing and academic support. Boston College student-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the University and its supporters. The Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes recently moved into a brand new home in the Yawkey Athletics Center. Under DeFilippo’s leadership, 364 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better during the 2006-07 academic year, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. The football team won the 2004 American Football Coaches Association’s Academic Achievement Award with a 100% graduation rate and BC’s graduation rate for all student-athletes has consistently ranked in the nation’s top ten. Also under DeFilippo’s leadership, U.S. News and World Report honored Boston College as one of the top 20 athletics departments in the country. DeFilippo has restructured the athletics program and hired top-notch administrators. He initiated an impressive overhaul of BC’s athletics facilities that includes new football practice facilities, lighting, scoreboards and other improvements at Shea Field, renovations to Conte Forum, including a new sound system, floor and video boards, two new soccer fields on the Newton campus, new Field Turf for Alumni Stadium, and an air-inflated bubble to cover the stadium turf to provide an indoor practice facility for all sports during the winter months. DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the privately funded $27 million, 72,000-square-foot Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes, and a large function area for general University use, freeing up critically needed space in Conte Forum for women’s athletics and other Olympic sports teams. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renovation Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports. DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College Athletics contributed a record $19 million in 2007, highlighted by more than 50 commitments of $100,000 or more, the most six-figure gifts in the history of BC Athletics. In the past two years alone, there have been over 100 commitments at the $100,000+ level. Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their commitment to Boston College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need.

In athletics competition, DeFilippo has overseen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 2006-07 season, the football team appeared in a school-record eighth consecutive bowl game and won its seventh straight. The men’s ice hockey team played in the national championship game for the second year in a row and advanced to the Frozen Four for the seventh time in 10 seasons. The women’s hockey team appeared in the Frozen Four for the first time in school history. DeFilippo is extremely active on the national scene. He is the past president of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics), the nation’s Division I-A Athletics Directors’ organization, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. He is also a former representative to the NCAA Division I Management Council. DeFilippo was named the 2000-01 Division I-A Northeast Region NACDA/Continental Airlines AD of the Year. DR. FeRNA pHIllIpSDirector, learning resources For stuDent-athletes

Boston College recognizes the demands of academics and athletics, and acknowledges that students must be disciplined in their study habits to succeed in the classroom. The University’s Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes provides academic and personal support services to all varsity student-athletes with the goal that each student-athlete will be provided fair opportunity to achieve his or her potential of academic, social, spiritual, and personal development.

In April 2005, the Learning Resources moved into its spacious new home in the Yawkey Center. Dr. Ferna Phillips Osgood, director, leads a professional staff of six and tutoring staff of 40.

Learning Resources offers academic counseling, developmental instruction and tutorial services to help its student-athletes reach their maximum potential in the classroom.

AcADEMIc coUnsElInGThe Academic Counselor and other staff provides support to student-athletes by monitoring academic progress, supporting academic success in the classroom, articulating their needs to faculty, staff and administration, recognizing and rewarding scholarship and maintaining an interdisciplinary team approach to coordinate services.

DEVEloPMEntAl InstRUctIonThe program accommodates the academic needs of student-athletes who are under-prepared to compete academically at Boston College. The goal of the program is to provide intensive support and skill instruction through developmental tutoring for approximately 30 of the highest need and most academically challenged student-athletes. The associate director, in conjunction with specially trained Instructional Assistants, develops an Instructional Plan for each student-athlete in the program based on the student’s strengths, needs and learning style.

tUtoRIAl sERVIcEsThe program is designed to assist student-athletes with their course work, while at the same time helping students learn new skills for independent learning. Student-athletes request a tutor through their academic counselor. They are “matched” with tutors on the basis of need, tutor expertise and availability.

EAGlEs PRoGRAM EAGLES (Enhancing Academic Growth through Learned Educational Strategies)is a structured study program offered primarily to first year students that provides a structured study environment to ease the transition to the increased workload of college. The program balances the need for structure with the aim of increasing student’s responsibility for his or her own work. Each EAGLES student is responsible for six hours of monitored study time a week in the Study Center. The academic counselor works closely with the student and coach to monitor progress and number of hours worked in a week.

Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus to serve the sons of Boston’s Irish immigrants. It was the first institution of higher education to be founded in the city of Boston. Today, it is one of the foremost Catholic universities in the nation, with a coeducational enrollment of 14,500 undergraduate and graduate students, drawn from 50 states and more than 90 countries.

The growth Boston College has experienced has not been just in size, but also in stature and diversity. Today, it is ranked among the top 40 national universities by US News & World Report. Its Connell School of Nursing and Lynch School of Education are listed among the nation’s top 20 graduate programs, also by US News, while its Graduate School of Social Work is among the top 25, its Law School among the top 30 and its Carroll School of Management MBA program among the top 45. Boston College also is among the nation’s most selective universities, with more than 22,000 applications for approximately 2,200 seats in the freshman Class of 2008, and is numbered among the top American private research universities. Its endowment of $1.35 billion is among the nation’s 40 largest.

After more than a century of growth and evolution, Boston College holds fast to the ideals that inspired its Jesuit founders. The University today remains focused on its mission of helping students to develop their minds and talents while providing them with the motivation and compassion to use those talents in the service of others.

“Deeply rooted in its Catholic and Jesuit origins, Boston College offers an education that is distinctive in spirit and content, that is doubly rich with the best of human thought and with the profound insights of faith,” writes Reverend William P. Leahy, SJ, who assumed the presidency of Boston College in 1996. “We believe that Boston College provides a transforming experience for young men and women.”

A continued expression of this philosophy, based on the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or care for the individual, is the faculty’s dedication to teaching. BC faculty members have been honored for their teaching by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education, while the University’s overall commitment to teaching has been ranked among the nation’s top 20, also by US News & World Report.

A Boston College education focuses not only on intellectual development, but also on personal, spiritual and physical development. As a result, students are asked to use their abilities, education and acquired skills to help others in need. Each year, 1,500 Boston College students provide more than 80,000 hours of volunteer service from Boston to Belize. In addition, nearly 2,000 students take part in retreats and spiritual formation activities annually.

Today, the Boston College motto “ever to excel” also extends to a broad array of extracurricular activities and opportunities ranging from sports to the arts. Athletics is integral to the University’s focus on the development of the whole person in body as well as in mind and spirit. BC offers 34 men’s and women’s varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level, and annually has one of the highest graduation rates in Division IA.

BC is home to a wide variety of resources that enrich intellectual and cultural life beyond the campus gates. Among these are the Jesuit Institute; Center for Ignatian Spirituality; Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life; Center on Wealth and Philanthropy; Center for Retirement Research; Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation and Educational Policy; TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center; Center for International Higher Education; Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections; Robsham Theater Arts Center; McMullen Museum of Art; Center for Child, Family and Community Partnerships; Center for Corporate Citizenship; Center for Work and Family; Center for Irish Programs and Weston Observatory.

Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 55th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate athletic conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 105 national championships, including 56 in women’s competition and 49 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 139 times in men’s competition and 86 times in women’s action. The Virginia Cavaliers won the league’s first track and field national title claiming the women’s AIAW indoor crown in 1981. In 2007, Florida State captured its second-straight men’s track and field national championship, winning the outdoor title in Sacramento, Calif., by a 6-point margin. The two wins by the Seminoles are the only NCAA Track and Field national championships won by an ACC school in the league’s 55-year history. In addition, Florida State’s women’s team has laid claim to three NCAA Track & Field national titles, an outdoor crown in 1984 and back-to-back indoor championships in 1985 and 1986. In 1984, the Seminoles captured five individual event titles, including a pair of relay championships. Randy Givens, a six-time NCAA champion at Florida State, collected four titles (100m, 200m, 400m relay and 1600m relay) in 1984 leading the Seminoles to the team title. Since 1953, member schools have garnered 111 individual titles in both men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, while teams have finished in the top five at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships a combined 22 times. The 2007 Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field season was one of the best in conference history as the ACC registered a team national championship, 13 individual titles and 85 All-American accolades in 97 combined events.

At the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in Fayetteville, Ark., the ACC set a new league-high with six event individual national champions. Two Florida State athletes won titles on the men’s side, helping to propel the Seminoles to a second-place finish. A conference record eleven schools on the women’s side recorded points in 2007.

The outdoor season concluded out on the west coast at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Comlex in Sacramento, Calif. with the ACC garnering seven individual national titles. Along with Florida State’s title on the men’s side, the Duke Blue Devils had the best finish on the women’s side placing a school-best 12th place. In all, five ACC teams finished in the top 20 at the NCAA meet, another first for the conference. The Florida State men and Virginia Tech women completed the indoor/outdoor sweep capturing both league titles in 2007. Through the history of ACC track and field, the Maryland men have won the most titles obtaining a combined 52 indoor and outdoor league crowns including consecutive indoor titles from 1956-1980 and successive outdoor championships from 1956-1979. Legendary head coach Jim Kehoe led the Terrapins to 30 of those conference championships. Clemson’s Bob Pollock is second on the men’s list as he has led the Tigers to 20 of their 22 conference championships.

On the women’s side, North Carolina has won 29 indoor and outdoor titles all coming under the tutelage of head coach Dennis Craddock. Craddock leads all active coaches in the ACC with 40 conference championships which include 32 women’s titles and eight men’s titles (four outdoor, two indoor and two cross country). In 2007, Florida State’s Bob Bramen joined Craddock and Miami’s Amy Deem as one of only three coaches in the ACC to win multiple indoor and outdoor titles.

Since 1903, ACC schools have produced 21 Rhodes Scholars who have also lettered in athletics while at their respective institutions. Of those 21 student-athletes, 10 have competed in the sport of track and field and cross country. In the last two years, three student-athletes have been named Rhodes Scholars including Wake Forest’s Michelle Sikes (2007), Duke’s Charles Salmen (2007) and Florida State’s Garrett Johnson (2006). Other ACC Track and Field Rhodes Scholars include Virginia’s Benjamin Baker (1922), Charles Gleaves (1926), Murat Williams (1935), Luke Harvey Poe (1938) and James B. Whitlach (1947), North Carolina’s Karen Stevenson (1979) and Wake Forest’s Maria Merritt (1987).
