Fellow members of District Seven: What a unique opportunity we have before us. The Fall Conference in Fort Lauderdale has all the facets of a great learning and sharing experience for every member. The planning group has developed an outstanding agenda in which there is something for everyone – from the newest member to the oldest, either appointed staff or elected. The theme for our time together is “D7 – Setting the Stan-dard through Integration, Innovation and Integrity.” Here is your chance as a member to improve your knowledge and professionalism within the Coast Guard family. Read this special issue of the Breeze and then come for

Welcome, Commander Allen

Commander Dave Allen reported on board as the new Director of Auxiliary July 2, 2007. He comes to us after two years at the U.S. Embassy in Port au Prince, Haiti, where he worked with the Haitian Coast Guard in the development of training and operational facili-ties. Commander Allen has served in the Coast Guard since 1982, with shipboard assignments in Charleston, S.C. on board the USCGC PAPAW and in Brunswick, GA on board USCGC SMILAX. His assignments ashore included Guam, Honolulu, Washington, D.C., and Mi-ami, where he served as Commander of the Miami Military Entrance Processing Station. His primary Coast Guard assignments included search and rescue, law enforcement and workforce management. Commander Allen is married to Lt Col Janet Allen, U.S. Air Force, who is assigned to U.S. Southern Command Headquarters in Miami. They live with their two daughters in Doral, and enjoy Beach Music (those of you in the Carolinas will know what that is), volunteering at local events, and traveling, especially when they can do it on their motorcycles. Ω

On Friday, July 27, the U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle made her grand entry into the Port of Miami, with City, County, Local Law Enforcement vessels, Department of Homeland Se-curity, U.S. Coast Guard, and ten Auxiliary boats as escorts. Berthed at Bicentennial Park, the Eagle was open to the public for tours. On Saturday and Sunday over two thousand guests passed over her decks. Auxiliary members from Division Six were briefed and trained on board to serve as official tour guides for the visitors. These Auxiliary volunteers made the tours possi-ble, as the Eagle’s ca-det crew was being changed out, with one hundred fifty new cadets reporting for duty. The ship’s crew who nor-mally conduct the tours were busy with ship personnel changes and new crew member ori-entations. Ω

On May 19, Division Nine and Flotilla 98 hosted the 2007, 7th Dis-trict Interna-tional Search and Rescue competition at the Best West-ern in Punta Gorda. Four person teams from throughout the District competed for the right to represent the U.S. in competi-tion with the best of the Canadian Coast Guard for the trophy in Toronto this coming September. It was the third time in five years that Division Nine and Flotilla 98 were tasked not only with hosting the competition, but also with the planning and coordination essential for the success of the event. Members of the District Seven Response Team, Ed Rhea, ADSO-OP, George Kacmarik, DSO-OP and Casey Jankowski, D-CR, under the direction of CWO2 Steven Hanson, Acting DIRAUX, worked tirelessly to set up the accommodations, materials and equipment needed for the water and land tasks. They directed a cadre of Auxiliary members who assisted with all assigned tasks to keep the events of the day on schedule. When all the points earned in each event were totaled, the winners were Max Garrsion, Don Hoge, Kevin McConn and Jimmy Ryder from Division Eleven in central western Flor-ida, which stretches from Hudson to Clearwater. The team from Division Nine was run-ners-up, as was the Division Ten team from Savannah, Georgia. Judges for the event were CWO2 Steven Hanson, Acting DIRAUX, CWO4 Pete Louzao, Commanding Officer, Fort Myers Beach, and CWO2 Randal Ryan from Sand Key, with Captain Suzanne Englebert. The Auxiliary side of the team was represented by COMO Peter Fernandez, National Area Commodore Atlantic East, COMO Allen Brown, District Seven Commodore, Walter Jaskiewicz, Rear Commodore West, Philip Merrill, Past Rear Commodore West, George Withrow, Division Nine Captain, and John Ehmann, Flotilla Commander 98. The team from Division Eleven went on to the National Competition held at Cape May on July 21 where they finished in first place. They will now continue on to Toronto, Canada, where they will compete in the International Competition to be held on September 28-29 2007. It will be held on the picturesque Toronto Waterfront with the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary teams. There will be six U.S. and six Canadian teams in the competition. We wish the Division Eleven team good luck. Ω
