EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

HIGHLIGHTS:

• We obtained a 53 percent overall response rate for the Class of 2007. • 92.6% of 2007 graduates are employed, attending graduate school, taking additional

undergraduate coursework, in the military, or are pursuing other activities. • 83% of 2007 graduates are employed (responded “employment only” or “both

employment and graduate school”) • 21.5% responded that they are attending graduate school (responded “graduate school

only” or “both employment and graduate school”) • Only 7.4% responded that they are still seeking employment or undecided. • Approximately 55.9% of respondents are employed in the public sector (education, law

enforcement/security, social services/non-profit, government/public administration, military/defense) while 44.1% are employed in the private sector (see page 7 for more details).

INTRODUCTION

The following report is based on the results from the Class of 2007 Post-Graduate Survey conducted by the Office of Career Services at Westfield State College. This report was conducted primarily to learn about the post-graduate activities of the graduating class of 2007 and to acquire contact information and geographical data. The list of choices for post-graduation activities follows:

• Both employment and graduate school • Employment ONLY • Graduate school ONLY • Additional undergraduate coursework • Military • Traveling • Still seeking employment • Undecided • Other

In addition to post-graduation activities, we asked employed graduates to share their job title, employer’s name, industry, salary range, and job location. Other questions included part or full-time status, when employment was secured, and whether or not employment was related to one’s major. Those attending graduate school were asked the name of the school, location, program of study, anticipated degree, and part or full-time status.

The Office of Career Services created the survey in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research and the Office of Advancement and College Relations. The information collected from this survey helps Westfield State College report annually requested data/statistics on post-graduate activities to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

This survey also helps to: • Provide outcomes for faculty and administration to assist with recruiting efforts and

accreditation reviews. • Provide current address and contact information of our alumni. • Contribute to the marketability of Westfield State College. • Provide valuable information for current and prospective students and parents regarding the

variety of opportunities for Westfield State College graduates. • Increase development/fundraising initiatives through acquisition of new alumni contact and

employment information. • Determine alumni resource persons for career panels, recruiting events, and career-related

activities. • Develop employer relations by identifying Westfield State College alumni contacts who are

working with specific organizations.

METHODOLOGY

WHO

Our goal was to obtain a representative sample of the graduating class of 2007 for both undergraduate and graduate level students. Out of 926 total undergraduate-level students, 845 were surveyed (91%). Out of 162 total graduate-level students, 115 were surveyed (71%).

WHEN The survey was implemented mid-November and was closed on December 21, 2007.

HOW Survey participants completed the Class of 2007 Post-Graduate Survey online at: www.wsc.ma.edu/grad2007survey.

• A postcard was mailed first-class to those with valid mailing addresses (908) which included the online link to the survey. The postcard also promoted our incentive to complete the survey, which was a $100.00 American Express Gift Card. Numbers were assigned to each person who completed the online survey and the winner was chosen by a random number generator.

• Email messages were sent using 837 Westfield State College email addresses, 205 emails

obtained from our online job posting database (C.S.O.), and emails obtained from Banner that differed from either the Westfield State College or C.SO. email addresses. Additionally, coworkers in the Career Services office emailed 2007 graduates who they had met with previously. Three reminder emails were sent on November 26th, December 5th, and December 18th. A thank you email was sent out on December 21st to those who completed the survey, announcing the winner of the American Express Gift Card and reminding 2007 graduates about the career services and resources available to alumni as well as how to serve as a Career Mentor.

• A graphic with a link to the online survey was created and added to the Westfield State

College homepage as well as the Career Services homepage and the alumni webpage on the Career Services website.

• An email message was sent to faculty and staff, requesting them to encourage 2007

graduates to complete the online survey. • Announcements, which included the link to the online survey, were posted on Facebook – on

the Career Services group and on the Westfield State College Class of 2007 group. Additionally, email messages were sent via Facebook to individual members of both groups.

• Phone calls were made starting November 20, 2007 to all 2007 graduates with available

phone numbers who had not yet completed the online survey (627). 192 surveys were completed by phone contributing to 38% of the completed survey total.

RESULTS: RESPONSE RATES

• We obtained a 53 percent overall response rate for the Class of 2007. • 960 Class of 2007 graduates were surveyed (includes undergraduate and graduate level). • 505 respondents completed the survey out of the total 960 surveyed. (53%)

• 845 undergraduate-level students (with bachelor degrees) surveyed • 455 respondents completed the survey out of the total 845 surveyed (54%)

• 115 graduate-level students (with master degrees) surveyed • 50 respondents completed the survey out of the total 115 surveyed (43%)

Post-Graduate Activity Breakdown:

• 66.7% responded that they are “employed only”

• 16.2% responded that they are “both employed and attending graduate school”

• 6.9% are “still seeking employment”

• 5.3% are attending “graduate school only”

• 2.2% were enrolled in “additional undergraduate coursework”

• 1.6% were pursuing “other” activities *(see page 25 for descriptions of “other” activities)

• .6% were involved in the “military”

• Only .4% responded that they are “undecided”

• No graduates reported that they are traveling.
