About LittLe Women

When I was first approached to guest direct this production, I had never met Jo March or her family of little women. I hadn’t grown up with the novel like so many women do, but had seen a production of the show and found

it slightly sentimental … a bit too precious for my ever-so-manly tastes.

Then I read the book, and I listened (incessantly) to the score. And I fell in love ... head over heels in love with this passionate young woman who would re-invent how we look at female protagonists in literature forevermore. I fell in love with her quirky, lovely and often flawed sisters who manage to gracefully negotiate their way through childish dreams and adult realities in a man’s world, at a time of great political change and upheaval. Suddenly, I knew why mothers and daughters everywhere are consistently moved by these characters and their lives. What I have since discovered is not a sappy, saccharine-laden story populated with simple women in hoop skirts, but something so much deeper. A story about strength and passion. The search to find one’s destiny, even when society tells you are a fool. I found a story filled with very real characters who must fight for their lives and their loves, while the country battles a war on its own land.

I’m thrilled to be able to share with you the familiar story of Jo, Beth, Meg and Amy, and I’m honored to share with you the talents of the extraordinary company of artists who have given their whole hearts to this project. Enjoy the work of Tom, Dean, Jim, Claire, Matt and everyone on the production team who has made this production as delicious as it is. If you thrill to the stunning musicianship of Jason Yarcho and the brilliant choreography of Patti James as much as I have loved working with them, you will be blessed indeed. Thanks to Aubrey and Terrell who have welcomed me and encouraged me constantly. Many thanks to our indestructible stage management team (Cindy, Stacy, Michael and Clifton) and everyone else at CCM who has tirelessly worked to make me look competent. During my research for this production, I had the pleasure of meeting with Jan Turnquist, executive director of Orchard House, and of visiting the home of the Alcott Family from the time when Little Women was written. I thank Jan for her many words of wisdom and encourage everyone to visit them at www.louisamayalcott.com. A final thank you to Sara, Sarah, Lisa, Alessa, Christy, Kyle, Preston, Max, Carl and Lexie, all of whom have been a dream come true since the day we read through the play for the first time. They embody all that is beautiful about the musical theater program at CCM, bring you their hearts and souls and are, all of them, truly astonishing.

Make your money dance

Brett Offenberger and Doug Duckett love musical theater. Over the years, they have become active and ardent supporters of CCM’s top-ranked program.

“CCM brings a caliber of talent to Cincinnati that is nationally renowned. Its musical theater program brings such beauty and joy to our lives that we wanted to give back, helping students achieve their dreams, now and in the future.”

Join Brett and Doug by considering a planned gift to CCM. Make your money dance — fund scholarships, provide for faculty and facility needs, and ensure the CCM tradition of achievement for years to come.

For more information, contact the CCM External Relations Office, 513-556-2100.
