Head Coach Jim Whitesell: In two short seasons, Jim Whitesell has injected newlife into the Loyola program and made the Ramblers a contender for the HorizonLeague crown. So far in his brief stay in Rogers Park, the Iowa Falls, Iowa nativehas guided Loyola to a 33-28 (.541) overall record and has improved the team’swin total by 10 games since the 2003-04 campaign. A master at rebuilding pro-grams in his previous stops at Elmhurst College and Lewis University, both of whichhe steered to NCAA Tournament appearances, Whitesell’s 32 victories in his firsttwo seasons at Loyola were the most by a Rambler coach in his first two cam-paigns since Tom Haggerty won 43 games from 1945-47. Whitesell is 16-16 (.500) inHorizon League play as Loyola’s mentor, and last season notched his 300th careervictory in the Ramblers’ 77-60 decision at Cleveland State on Dec. 29, 2005.

Blake’s Back: After testing the waters at the NBA predraft camp in Orlando inJune, senior Blake Schilb opted to return to Loyola for his final season of eligibilitywith hopes of leading the Ramblers to their first NCAA Tournament appearancesince 1984-85. Last season, Schilb averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9assists per game en route to Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America hon-ors. A two-time First Team All-Horizon League selection, Schilb has also been rec-ognized as one of 50 preseason candidates on the Wooden Award Watch List. Theversatile 6-foot-7 guard is one of only seven players on the Wooden Watch List thatcompete in so-called “mid-major” conferences.

Pattrick Out: Senior center Kye Pattrick will be sidelined indefinitely with a bro-ken foot sustained during practice in late October. Last year, Brandon Woods suf-fered a knee injury in the opening weekend of practice and missed the first sevengames of the season.

Grizzled Vets: Whitesell will have his most experienced squad since coming toRogers Park as the 2006-07 roster features five seniors - Schilb, Pattrick, MajakKou, Brandon Woods and David Gale. The last time Loyola had that many seniorson its opening-day roster was 2002-03 (David Bailey, Kevin Clancy, Justin Coons,Corey Minnifield and Vasilis Tsimpliaridis).

First Things First: For the first time since 1980-81, Loyola has been picked to winthe Horizon League title in the annual preseason poll of the League’s coaches, sports information directors and media. In addition, the Ramblers were also pickedas Horizon League favorites by Athlon, Street & Smith and Lindy’s. Loyola is com-ing off of a 19-win season, its best showing since going 27-6 and advancing to theNCAA Sweet Sixteen in 1984-85.

Lastyear, Loyola posted a sparkling 4-0 record during the first month of theseason and averaged a staggering 81.0 ppg.

Majak of All Trades: While Schilb grabs most of the headlines for theRamblers, his fellow senior backcourt mate, Majak Kou, quietly puts upimpressive numbers at both ends of the floor. The slender 6-foot-5 guardwas one of only six players in NCAA Division I competition to average atleast 1.0 three-point field goals, blocks and steals per game in 2005-06.Kou ranked second on the team with 12.8 ppg as a junior, and his 1.5 bpgand 1.6 spg helped him earn Horizon League All-Defensive Team acco-lades.

Thousand Island: Kou needs 168 points to become the 36th player inLoyola history to pour in 1,000 points for his career. Schilb already hastossed in 1,351 points in his three years in Rogers Park. Schilb and Kouare aiming to become the first set of Loyola teammates to have at least1,000 career points at the same time since Carl Golston and Andre Battlein the mid-1980s.

Leon Young is pumping in 15.3ppg, hauling in 6.5 rpg and connecting on .640 (16 for 25) of his triesfrom the field in four contests in Ohio. Over his last seven games insideOhio state lines, Schilb has contributed 20.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 4.6 apg, topping the 20-point plateau on four occasions. He scored a season-high29 points and hit seven three-pointers, one shy of a school record, inLoyola’s 87-84, overtime victory at Youngstown State on Feb. 25, 2006.

Blake Bounces Back: With only six points last night, Schilb was limitedunder 10 points for the first time since being held without a field goal forthe first time in his career, en route to three points, at San Diego on Dec.20, 2005, a span of 21 games. In his next outing however, the sharpshoot-ing guard exploded for 26 points, including the game-winning shot as timeexpired in a 74-72 decision at UC Irvine two nights later.

In his last six appearances dating back to last sea-son, the Preseason Horizon League Player of the Year has pumped in 20.4ppg and added 7.6 rpg and 4.7 apg.

J.R.’s Shots: If you had to describe sophomore guard J.R. Blount in oneword, there is no question it would be “winner”. The 6-foot-1 Milwaukeenative has compiled a staggering 71-14 (.835) record over the last three-plus seasons. Blount missed six games due to a stress fracture in his foota year ago, but started to regain his form at season’s end, averaging 16.0ppg, 3.0 rpg and 3.5 apg in the final two contests of the year. In lastnight’s win over Princeton, he dropped in 12 points and added five boardsand three assists.

That Under-70s Show: Under Whitesell, Loyola has compiled a 23-8(.742) ledger when holding its opponent to fewer than 70 points. TheRamblers went 12-3 in such instances in 2005-06 and are 1-0 this season.

Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood: Tracy Robinson, who was making his firststart since Jan. 8, 2005, accounted for a career-best 10 points last nightin Loyola’s win over Princeton. The junior forward hit 4 of 5 shots fromthe field and dating back to last season, has drained 17 of his last 35(.486) tries from three-point range.

Dairyland Delight: Loyola’s three Wisconsin natives - Blount, Levin andPolka - combined for 28 of Loyola’s 68 points, 12 of its 33 rebounds andhit 9 of 16 shots (.563) from the field last night against Princeton.
