WHAT A TURNAROUND!UIC is coming off an 18-win (18-16, 7-9 Horizon) season, the most victories since 2007-08 and the most of any D-I program in the city of Chicago last year. The Flames improved upon their win total from the 2011-12 campaign (8-22, 3-15 HL) by 10 victories, representing the 12th-largest turnaround in the nation.

POSTSEASON SUCCESSThe2012-13Flamesadvancedtothepostseasonforthefirsttimesincethe2003-04campaign as they accepted an invitation to play in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. UIChostedChicagoStateinthefirstroundandclaimedvictorybyafinalof80-69,servingastheFlamesfirstpostseasonwininprogramhistory.UICtraveledtoNorthernIowaforsecond-round action and suffered a 63-51 defeat.

SWEET HOME CHICAGOLast season, Head Coach Howard Moore guided the Flames to a 12-4 record when playing at the UIC Pavilion, which is tied for the third-most wins since the venue was constructed in 1982. UIC totaled home 13 wins during the 1989-90 and 1997-98 seasons and 12 victories during the 2007-08 campaign.

BARLOW NAMED PRESEASON ALL-HORIOZN LEAGUESenior Purdue transfer Kelsey Barlow was named to the preseason All-Horizon League Second Team, which was announced at the annual media day event on Oct. 16. Barlow came to UIC prior to the 2012-13 season, but had to sit out due to NCAA transfer rules. The Indianapolis native starred three years for the Boilermakers, earning a spot on the All-Big Ten Freshman Team in 2009-10. He averaged 8.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game during his junior year at Purdue, reaching double-digit point totals on 10 occasions.

GARY TALTON DRAFTED INTO NBA D-LEAGUEFormer UIC point guard Gary Talton was selected in the fourth round of the NBA D-League draft by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers last Friday night (Nov 1). The 67th overall pick starred at UIC for two seasons from 2011-13 and paced the Flames in scoring and assists last year, averaging 12.3 points and 4.4 helpers, respectively. Talton, a second-team All-Horizon League honoree, joined his teammates in training camp as the Valley Vipers begin their season on Nov. 23.

MOORE EARNS THREE-YEAR EXTENSION During the offseason, Head Coach Howard Moore earned a three-year contract extension and will remain on the Flames’ sideline through the 2017-18 season. Moore, the 10th head coach in program history, was rewarded for orchestrating the 12th-best turnaround in the country last season as UIC improved from 8-22 to 18-16 in 2012-13. The Flames also participatedintheCollegeInsider.comTournamentandrecordedtheprogram’sfirst-everpostseason win against Chicago State in the opening round.
