The 2004-2005 season did not live up to theexpectations of head coach Jessie Reyes, especially aftercoming off one of the better seasons in the Purduewrestling annals in 2003-2004.

With an 8-12 dual record, the Boilermakers finishedwith a sub-.500 record for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, a year Purdue also posted an 8-12 mark.Last year’s final record snapped a streak of fourconsecutive years with 10-plus wins, and was just thefourth year in Coach Reyes’ 13 years at Purdue theBoilermakers finished below .500.

The Boilermakers did have some success in 2004-2005, placing five of 10 wrestlers on the podium at theprestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational inDecember. Comparatively, Purdue placed just two amongthe top eight at the event in 2003, and three make theaward stand in 2002.

At the 2005 Big Ten Championships, Purduefinished 10th in the final team standings, and advancedfive wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. In St. Louis, the Boilermakers finished 36th and sent one wrestler tothe All-America platform, giving the Old Gold and Blackat least one All-American in each of the last five seasons, the longest streak in Purdue history.

November

The Boilermakers opened the 2004-2005 seasonwith a tough loss to Missouri in St. Louis, and thenheaded up the highway to Columbia, Mo., for the 2004Missouri Open.

After a 25-10 loss to the 10th-ranked Tigers, Purdueplaced four wrestlers on the award podium at theMissouri Open, three in the open bracket and one in thefreshman/sophomore competition. 197-pounderNathan Moore finished second at the tournament, whileJohn DeCeault (165) placed third and DougWithstandley (149) showed in fourth. In the freshman/sophomore bracket, Jarrin Franklin (157) placed fifth.

December

As it usually does for Boilermaker wrestling,December began with the prestigious Cliff Keen LasVegas Invitational. Purdue finished the tournament witha seventh-place showing and 83.5 team points, animprovement from a 10th-place finish one year earlier. The team point total was a 24-point improvement. Onthe individual podiums, the Old Gold and Black hadfive wrestlers place among the top eight in their weightclass, equalling the combined total of the previous twoseasons.

The top individual for the Boilermakers in Las Vegaswas 133-pounder Chris Fleeger, who fell in thechampionship match to eventual national champion TravisLee of Cornell. Ben Wissel finished fourth in the 184-pound division, wrestling five of his seven matches againstseeded wrestlers. In his first season of varsity competition,Jake O’Brien came away from Las Vegas with a fifth-placefinish at heavyweight. Withstandley (149) and Moore(197) both finished in eighth place.

Purdue returned to the dual circuit, traveling toLaGrange, Ill., for the NIU Duals and matchups withLoras College and Northern Illinois. The Boilermakersopened the day with a 23-13 victory over Loras, butcould not gain momentum with the win, falling to NIU29-9.

The home portion of the schedule opened with thePurdue Duals, a day that saw a resounding sweep ofWabash and Indianapolis. In the two duals, the Old Goldand Black out-scored its opponents by a combined 86-9, claiming 17 of the 20 individual matches, includingsix by fall. True freshman Colton Salazar burst onto thePurdue wrestling scene with two pins during the action, including a 1:11 fall over Wabash’s Adam Miller. 165-pounder John DeCeault followed Salazar’s stick with oneof his own, pinning Kevin Meyer in 1:00, the fastest pinfor the Boilermakers during the dual season.

January

Having been without the services of Wissel for thepast month after a knee injury, the 184-pounder madehis return to the Boilermaker lineup in the first dual of2005 with a major decision over Penn’s Dan Gallagher. However, Purdue suffered a 24-16 loss to the Quakers.

Three days later, the Boilermaker squad headed southfor the Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas, for dualswith Columbia, Cornell and Oklahoma. After a 21-16win over Columbia, Purdue ran into two teams rankedin the nation’s top 10 and the final scores showed thatranking, as the Boilermakers fell 29-9 to Cornell and30-6 to the Sooners.

The final weekend before the Big Ten season wasspent at the Wendy’s Duals in Ashland, Ohio. Purdueopened the day with a 26-6 victory over AppalachianState, but the Boilermakers could not carry that steaminto the dual with Central Michigan, falling 36-3. In thefinal dual of the afternoon, Purdue got wins from thefirst six weight classes en route to a 28-13 win over KentState.

The Big Ten season was a rocky one for theBoilermakers, and it opened with a 27-10 loss at hometo Northwestern. However, the effects from the loss wereshort-lived as Purdue hit the conference highway forColumbus, Ohio, site of an inspiring Purdue win in2003.

The 2005 Boilermakers answered the call of thatwin two years earlier, again knocking off the Buckeyes infront of the Ohio State crowd. A pin by Brandon Tucker(125) would have been the highlight of the dual, butthat honor went to Moore, who bested 2004 All-American J.D. Bergman in overtime at 197.

January did not end nicely for the Boilermakers, withPenn State handing Purdue a 32-7 defeat on the finalweekend of the month.

February

Although the saying is “March comes in like a lion,”that lion roared one month early for the Boilermakers asPurdue fell in its first two duals of the month.

Wrestling at home, Purdue ran into No. 3 Illinoisand No. 7 Minnesota on back-to-back days, and theopponents proved to be too much for the Boilermakersto handle. Illinois bested the Boilermakers 32-6, withjust Withstandley (149) and Moore (197) picking upvictories. The following day, the Golden Gophers scoreda 29-12 victory against the Old Gold and Black.

Despite the setbacks, the weekend did provide apositive moment for the Boilermakers as Tucker, a redshirtfreshman in his first year in the starting lineup, defeated2003 All-American and eventual 2005 All-AmericanBobbe Lowe of Minnesota, 8-7. The win would not bethe most impressive of the year for Tucker.

Following in the footsteps of Tucker’s big win, theBoilermakers did it as a team the following weekend whenthey knocked off 11th-ranked Michigan State on thefloor of Mackey Arena. Salazar opened the match with adominating 23-7 win at 157 pounds over Justin Mora.Purdue won four of the next five matches as well, buildinga 17-3 team advantage en route to a 20-13 dual victory.

On the last weekend of the 2004-05 regular season,Purdue headed to Bloomington, Ind., for a dual with theIndiana Hoosiers. Despite an 18-12 victory for IU, theBoilermakers were once again shown the potential ofTucker. The freshman took the mat against All-Americanand eventual 2005 national champion Joe Dubuque andknocked off the Hoosier 125-pounder in front of theIU crowd, 4-3.

The final showdown of the season took place in AnnArbor, Mich., with the Boilermakers falling to sixth-ranked Michigan, 29-18.

March

The Big Ten Championships were not kind to thePurdue Boilermakers, as five of the members of the OldGold and Black were bumped from the tournament fieldwithout a victory.
