A bright future looms as the Colonial Athletic Associationprogresses into its second decade of wrestling competition.

In 2001-02, the CAA merged with the old East CoastWrestling Association to form a powerful 11-team alliance inEastern wrestling. The current lineup includes CAA memberinstitutions Drexel University, George Mason University, HofstraUniversity, James Madison University and Old DominionUniversity and associate members Binghamton University, BostonUniversity, Campbell University, Rider University, Sacred HeartUniversity and Wagner College. Binghamton, Boston U., Drexel,Hofstra, Rider, Sacred Heart and Wagner were all members for theECWA.

The new configuration gave the CAA more national recogni-tion with 23 berths in the NCAA Championships. Previously, theCAA had 13 bids to the national tournament, while the ECWA had17. The annual CAA Championships will be held at BostonUniversity March 4-5, with the top two finishers in each of the 10weight classes automatically advancing to theNCAA Championships along with five“wild card” selections. The2006 NCAA Champion-ships will beheldMarch 16-18 at Okla-homa City,Oklahoma. The CAAbegansponsoringa wrestlingchampion-ship withthe 1991-92season asGeorge Mason,James Madisonand Old Dominionwere joined by AmericanUniversity, Liberty University, theCollege of William & Mary and VirginiaTech to form the original CAA lineup. UNC Greensborolater joined as an associate member for two years, and Campbellbecame an associate member in 1996-97.

George Mason has enjoyed the most success in the 13-yearhistory of the CAA, winning five conference team championships, while Hofstra has won three titles and James Madison and VirginiaTech each have won two championships. Old Dominion hasclaimed one crown. The Patriots, who have a 49-21 record in CAAdual-meet action over the last 13 years, have finished first fivetimes, second three times, third twice, seventh twice and fourthonce in the annual conference tournament. George Mason set thenschool records with 105.5 points, six individual champions andseven NCAA qualifiers at the 2001 CAA Championships as itwon its fifth title.

Over its short history, the CAA has produced 11 All-

Americans (placing among the top eight in a weight class at theNCAA Championships). George Mason’s John Curtis is the onlyPatriot wrestler to earn the honor twice, placing eighth in 1992 andseventh in 1993 at 190. Hofstra’s Chris Skretkowicz is also a two-time All-American, finishing sixth in 2003 and fifth in 2004 at 197.Old Dominion’s Jody Staylor was second at 126 and VirginiaTech’s Josh Feldman was seventh at heavyweight in 1994, OldDominion’s Nick Hall was fifth at heavyweight and GeorgeMason’s Matt Finacchio was eighth at 126 in 1995, and JamesMadison’s Mike Coyle placed eighth at 133 pounds in 2000. RobRebmann of Drexel placed seventh at 125 pounds in 2004.

Over the past 13 years, George Mason has had 21 differentwrestlers win a total of 27 individual conference championships.Sean Shea (118 in 1996, 126 in 1997 and 125 in 2001) is Mason’sonly three-time CAA champion, while Curtis (190 in 1992 and1993), Finacchio (118 in 1994, 126 in 1995), Willie Stravino (134

in 1993 and 1994) and Brent Lancaster (heavyweight in 1999and 2001) each have won two individual

titles. Adrian Austin joined this listin 2004 after winning the

149-pound crown.The CAA traces

its roots back to1983 when three of

its currentmembers –

GeorgeMason,James

Madison andWilliam &

Mary – werealigned with

East CarolinaUniversity, the

United StatesNaval Academy and

the University ofRichmond as a basketball

league known as the ECACSouth. During the next two years, the

league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (UNCWilmington and American University) and decided to form a newassociation. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA tookplace on June 6, 1985, as a “Proclamation of Creation” was signedby representatives of the eight charter institutions and by membersof the media assembled for the announcement. By the fall of 1986,the league gained automatic bids to NCAA Championships inmen’s basketball, soccer, baseball and women’s basketball andformed an officials’ bureau. Old Dominion became a member of theCAA in 1991-92 and Virginia Commonwealth joined the confer-ence in 1995-96.

From all-star athletes to Nobel prize-winning faculty, theCAA takes great pride in producing performers who stand outboth on the playing field and in the classroom.

OOOOOUUUUUTTTTTLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOKKKKK

The beginning of the new century fiveyears ago marked a different look to the Co-lonial Athletic Association wrestling mat.Added to the fold in 2001-2002 were wres-tling powerhouses Hofstra University andRider and with that a much tougher path tothe NCAA Championships. Since the incep-tion of the original CAA during the 1991-92season, George Mason wrestling has produced40 NCAA qualifiers and three All-Americans.However, for the first time since the 1986-87campaign – a string of 18 consecutive years –Mason did not have a wrestler advance to theseason-ending NCAA Championships last season.

First-year interim head coach MarkWeader, who was a NCAA qualifier himselfat Mason, has weathered the storm of thenew 11-team conference and feels that GeorgeMason has turned the corner to have successduring the regular season in dual meets andvie for individuals to compete for an NCAAChampionship. “The philosophy of buildingand maintaining the program here at Masonwent through a few bumps when the newCAA was formed,” said Weader. “Perennialpowers Hofstra and Rider made the confer-ence more powerful, but also gave the CAAmore national recognition in the NCAA Championship.”

After a few sub-500 years, the team man-

classes that we don’t have returning starters,we have redshirt freshman that gained expe-rience and refined their skills at practices.”

The fulcrum of the balanced team consists ofthree junior starters Mitch Webster, DavidEmison and Robert Henry, who placed inthe top four of their respective weight classesat the CAA Championships last season andjunior Harry Zander, who claimed the indi-vidual 197-pound title at the Virginia Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships.

Tri-captain Webster placed third at theCAAs at 157 pounds and concluded the yearwith an 11-13 record, going 3-3 in the CAAand 5-6 in dual matches. He is a preseasontop 5 in the CAA polls this season, but theroad to the NCAA will be tough as he needsto get through the two wrestlers who fin-ished ahead of him last season and are thepreseason favorites to repeat. “Mitch hasgotten more consistent through the experi-ence and it should pay off inthe end,” said Weader.

Emison placed fourth at the CAAs lastseason at 133 pounds and is predicted tofinish the same in the conference by pre-season polls, but at the 141 weight class. Hehas and astounding 56 wins in just two sea-sons. He was one of two wrestlers to postdouble-digit wins in dual matches at 11-3

aged an 8-7 overall record and 4-4 mark inthe Colonial Athletic Association last year, utilizing a lineup that mainly consisted of 14freshmen and sophomores. Interim headcoach Mark Weader returns 17 letter-win-ners from that squad that had Mason’s firstwinning dual match season since 2000-01.While the 27-man roster has only one senior,Joel Caruso, they are very balanced and ex-perienced. They bolstered their line-up withsix freshman newcomers and four freshman redshirts.

“In those first few years of the newCAA we recruited national caliberwrestlers, but we lacked some depth, andthat hurt us in our dual meets,” explainedWeader. “Instead of bringing in a fewathletes that will annually compete for theNCAA championships, we focus on morequality depth at each position andindividuals who have the skills that arewilling to work hard to improve and get tothe top level,” added Weader. “Thatphilosophy paid dividends last year withour winning dual record.”That philosophy should hold true going intothis season as the 27-man roster proves tohave experience and depth returning sevenstarters. “From the lightweights to theheavyweights we feel that we can competein all our matches,” said Weader. “In weight

and collected a 5-2 mark against CAA oppo-nents. Nineteen of Emison’s 27 match winswere pin fall, technical fall or major decisionvictories. “He is everything you look for in astudent-athlete, which includes an academicall-American honor,” said Weader. “He is verytalented and has gotten stronger during the offseason.”

Henry, also a Tri-captain this season, finished fourth at the 2005 CAA Champion-ships and is predicted to finish second toHotstra’s Jon Masa. He completed last yearat 16-13 overall and 10-5 in dual contests (5-3 CAA). Coach Weader looks to Henry tohave a breakout season. “He is probably thehardest worker on the team and with his ea-gerness to learn he can make big strides,” said Weader.

The third man of the trio of captains islone returning senior Joel Caruso, who hasprovided steady experience at Heavyweight. He suffered a knee injury shortly after de-feating the eighth-ranked wrestler in the coun-try last season, saw limited action the rest ofthe year and compiled an 8-6 record. CoachWeader expects him to wrestle at 197 poundsthis season. Harry Zander will compete forstarting time with Caruso at 197 pounds. Heregistered a solid overall record at 16-9 and10-5 against dual competition. He carried a5-3 CAA mark. “He has a lot of upside andis capable of dominating a match,” said Weader.

One of the toughest battles for mat timewill be at the lightest weight 125 pound class.Redshirt freshman Dusty McKinney, whois also a preseason favorite to finish third inthe CAA, will battle with sophomore JoeCoughlin, who started last season at 125and earned two CAA Rookie of the Weekawards coupled with an 18-12 record overall(12-3 duals, 6-2 CAA). The other lightweightclass will pit redshirted freshman WilliamPowars with newcomer Stewart Gonzalez.Powars gained valuable experience partici-pating in daily practices and workouts lastseason. A highly touted wrestler from North-ern Virginia, Powars placed fourth or betterat the Virginia Group AA state champion-ship at 130 pounds each of his four seasonsat Potomac High School, winning thetitle in 2004.

Also among the seven returning start-ers is sophomore Randy Oates, who wasnamed to the CAA all-Rookie Team afterposting a 12-18 overall record and 4-3 markagainst conference opponents. He finished5-8 in overall dual matches and posted fivepin fall victories. “He has shown me that hecan be a very accomplished wrestler,” saidWeader. “He needs to continue to gain expe-

rience and work on being more consistent.”Adding depth to the squad is sopho-

more Jay Chichester who competed at 141pounds and recorded a 11-14 record last year, but has gotten stronger and bigger this off-season and should compete with returningstarter Robert Henry at 149 pounds. Sopho-more Mike Eastman collected a 7-10 recordat 184 and 197 pounds last year and shouldstart at 184. Junior Ryan Kittrick is theexpected starter at Heavyweight, where hewas 7-10 overall last year.

Freshman Robert Buck, ChrisCartella, Stewart Gonzalez, and StevenStotler are part of a group of freshmen re-cruits that should give the Patriots somedepth and contend for mat time. Buck andCartella have been voted by coaches in theCAA to a preseason freshman honorablemention. Cartella provides the 141 weightclass with a great one-two punch behindMason star David Emison. He was a two-time MVP of the his wrestling team atClearview High School in New Jersey andwas twice a District Champion and placedeighth at the state championships as a junior.

He was Virginia State Champion at 145and twice placed at the championships,Buck is projected to get some mat time at165. “Buck can make an immediate impactand get a lot of mat time because he learnedthe fundamentals from one of the best high school programs at Christianburg,” addedWeader.

Mark Weader has been involved withGeorge Mason wrestling for almost a decade, first as a student-athlete and for the past sixseasons on the coaching staff. He feels strongabout continuing to build on the solid foun-dation as he enters is first year at the helm.“I’m very excited about the present and fu-ture of this program,” said Weader. “We hadsome success last year after a few down yearsand I expect this core group to continue topush us in the right direction. We have tre-mendous depth, which will prove to be ourbiggest strength,” added Weader. “My goalfor the future will be to continue to reap thebenefits of bringing in quality student-ath-letes, which is the foundation to success.”

2004-05 SEASON IN REVIEW

George Mason’s 2004-05 season featureda very young squad with excellent potential. The athletes were tested throughout the yearboth mentally and physically; and despite itsyouth, produced some solid results and cata-pulted the Patriots to their first winning dualmatch season since 2000-01.

Bolstering a 29-man roster with onlyone senior, George Mason managed to puttogether an 8-7 overall record and 4-4 markin the Colonial Athletic Association, utiliz-ing a lineup that mainly consisted of 14freshmen and sophomores.

The season began with a solid sixth-place showing at the Navy Classic, followedby a 27th-place tie at the prestigious CliffKeen Las Vegas Invitational. Unlike in yearspast, the Patriots opened their dual matchseason early at the Slippery Rock Duals, where the team posted a 2-1 mark and wonits first dual meet of the year 31-9 overhost Slippery Rock.

Mason competed at the SouthernScuffle and Virginia Intercollegiate WrestlingChampionships to close out its individualmeets. Road dual matches at VMI and JamesMadison improved the Patriots mark to 3-2 entering the CAA Duals in Fairfax. Mason, which dropped the Dukes 31-9, began itsCAA slate at 1-0.

George Mason won its opening CAADuals bout over Wagner to begin a seven-

season, but was able to put things togetherat the end. After falling in the main draw,Webster, seeded sixth, rebounded to claimthree straight consolation victories, includ-ing a win over the No. 3 seed to finish third.

Emison, who placed fourth at the CAAs,led George Mason in overall victories at 27-11, competing at 133 pounds. He was one oftwo wrestlers to post double-digit wins indual matches at 11-3 and collected a 5-2 markagainst CAA opponents. Nineteen ofEmison’s 27 match wins were pin fall, tech-nical fall or major decision victories.

Henry also finished fourth at the CAAChampionships. Entering at 149 pound andseeded sixth, Henry dropped a narrow 4-1decision to the No. 3 seed in the consolationfinal. He completed the year at 16-13 overalland 10-5 in dual contests (5-3 CAA). Zanderregistered a solid overall record at 16-9 and10-5 against dual competition. He carried a 5-3 CAA mark. Capable of dominating a match, thirteen of Zander’s victories were by pinfall, technical fall or major decision.

Mason’s lone senior, Nick Webster, not only provided leadership; he also provedto be a worthy adversary for opponents at174, compiling a 15-17 record and 8-5 dualmark. Sophomore Ryan Kittrick and juniorJoel Caruso provided steady experience atHeavyweight. Kittrick was 7-10 overall.Caruso, who suffered a knee injury shortlyafter defeating the eighth-ranked wrestler inthe country early in the season, saw limitedaction the rest of the year and compiled an8-6 record. Junior Brian Smith totaled a 2-3 mark at 149 and 157 pounds. SophomoreMatt Horton registered five wins to sevenlosses at 184 pounds, while classmate JimMartin (2-9) also competed at 184.

Notable freshmen performances includeJoe Coughlin, who opened a lot of eyeswith his abilities, at 125 where he earnedtwo CAA Rookie of the Week awards andcorralled an 18-12 record overall (12-3 du-als, 6-2 CAA). Jay Chichester went 11-14at 141. Randy Oates polished off 12 winsto 18 losses at 165 pounds, while TylerTisdell (2-3) and Matt Moyer (4-5) sawtime on the mats at 157 and 165, respec-tively. Red-shirt freshman Sean Grant to-taled a 1-5 mark at 157/165 and MikeEastman collected a 7-10 record at 184 and197 pounds.

meet home stand and went on to post a 2-2record at the event. Sitting at 5-4 overall and3-2 in the league after the Duals, the Patri-ots defeated Duquesne and lost two con-secutive matches to close out the home stringwith a 6-6 mark and 4-3 conference record. The Patriots won two of their final threemeets – all on the road – to finish at 8-7overall and 4-4 in the CAA.

George Mason placed seventh at theCAA Championships at Boston University, dropping three spots from its fourth-placeshowing last year. However, for the firsttime since the 1986-87 campaign – a stringof 18 consecutive years – Mason did nothave a wrestler advance to the season-end-ing NCAA Championships.

Individually, three athletes placed in thetop four of their respective weight classesat the CAA Championships in sophomoresMitch Webster, David Emison and RobertHenry. Head coach Brian Shaffer, who com-pleted his 10th season at the helm of thePatriots with a 70-59 overall record and 34-21 CAA mark, also witnessed sophomoreHarry Zander claim the individual 197-pound title at the Virginia IntercollegiateWrestling Championships.

Since the inception of the program in thefall of 1972, the George Mason wrestling teamhas called the John Linn Memorial Gymna-sium its home.

Named for one of the pioneers in theGeorge Mason athletic department, the gymhas been a tough place for opponents to win,as the Patriots own a 91-20-1 record thereover the past 19 seasons.

Since 1981-82, the George Mason wres-tling team has an overall record of 107-49-1 inthe “friendly confines” of the Linn Gymna-sium, which is located in the Physical Educa-tion Building. From Jan. 27, 1989, to Nov.23, 1991, the Patriots posted a school-record25-meet home win streak that ended with a16-16 tie against Maryland. George Masonwent on to earn five more victories beforesuffering a loss to end the unbeaten streak ata record 31 meets. The last three victories inthe win streak came at the Recreation SportsComplex, making the record 22 meets at theLinn Gym.

The gymnasium was dedicated to thememory of John Linn on April 5, 1993. Linn, who died on June 3, 1992, spent 22 years onthe George Mason campus as a physical edu-cation instructor and served as the head coachof the trap and skeet, men’s basketball andcross country teams, an assistant baseballcoach, intramural director and assistant ath-letic director during his tenure.

Linn’s greatest success as a coach camewith the trap and skeet team, which he guided

to seven consecutive Association of CollegeUnions-International (ACU-I) national cham-pionships from 1986-92. Linn began the pro-gram as a club in 1976 and it achieved inter-collegiate status in 1980. Under the directionof Linn’s longtime friend Charlie Doll, thetrap and skeet team extended its streak ofnational titles to 10 in 1995.

Linn came to George Mason as the headbasketball coach in 1970. In 10 seasons di-recting the basketball team in the gymnasiumthat now bears his name, Linn took the pro-gram to new heights. He guided the Patriotsto a 19-8 record in 1974-75 and he led theprogram from the NAIA ranks into NCAADivision I status in 1978-79, surprising manyby posting a 17-8 record that season. Linnresigned as basketball coach after the 1980season with a career record of 130-147.

The Linn Gymnasium, which also is thehome of the George Mason men’s and women’svolleyball teams, seats 2,800 and featuresquality locker room facilities in addition to afull-sized training room, a weight room andseveral athletic department offices. The CAAWrestling Championships have been held atthe Linn Gym three times (1995, 1996 and2000), and the Virginia Intercollegiate Cham-pionships were held there in 1984 and 2001.It also has hosted the CAA women’s volley-ball tournament (1985, 1991, 1997, 2001) andwomen’s volleyball NCAA Tournamentmatches (1995, 1996).

HISTORY OF MASON WRESTLING

The George Mason wrestling programstrives to keep its tradition of success alive asit enters its 34th season in 2005-06. Since itsinception in 1972, the program has posted 21winning seasons, including a recent string of16 in a row, and has developed regional cham-pions and national qualifiers while pushing thesport into the forefront of Patriot athletics.

In its previous 33 seasons, the wrestlingprogram has compiled an overall record of 304-208-8, with a .594 winning percentage. At theJohn Linn Memorial Gym, the team’s 2,800-seat home, the wrestlers have a 107-49-1 (.692)record since 1981, and in the last 19 seasonsthey have posted a 93-22-1 home record (.808).The program’s largest margin of victory cameat home on Dec. 12, 1988, when the Patriotsdefeated Norfolk State, 76-0, putting them at4-0 for the season. From Jan. 27, 1989, throughthe end of 1991 the wrestlers continued aschool-record home-unbeaten streak of 31meets.

The Patriots posted their first win in theirfirst home meet on Dec. 6, 1972, versusSalisbury State, 30-25. They finished their firstseason 6-4, second in the Virginia CollegiateAthletic Association (VCAA) with three indi-vidual champions. In their second year, undertheir second head coach, Jerry Mullins, GeorgeMason was undefeated. This 15-0 team fin-ished first in the VCAA, boasting five indi-vidual champs. Four wrestlers qualified forNAIA Nationals, with John Long finishing inthe top eight in the country. Mullins wasnamed Coach of the Year.

The success of the program in its first sixseasons vaulted George Mason into NCAADivision I competition in December 1978.Respect of Patriot wrestling also increased withthe achievements of heavyweight PaulMaltagliati. In 1981-82 Maltagliati became thefirst Mason wrestler to qualify for the NCAADivision I Championships, which he did twoconsecutive years. Throughout his career heset several school records, including the markfor total victories with 122. The Patriots’ first

NCAA All-American, Scott Kirsch, came closeto breaking this record in 1991, but finishedjust three wins shy at 119.

The 1986-87 season marked the begin-ning of the program’s most successful era, withthe team posting a winning record every yearthrough 2000-01, and the Patriots have a recordof 183-69-2 (.724) through 2003-04. In 10 ofthe last 18 years, they have won at least 10dual meets. The 1987-88 squad was 18-3, post-ing a school record for victories in a season.

This era of success began under GeorgeMason’s winningest coach, Mike Moyer. Inhis 10 years as head coach (1985-95), he ledthe Patriots to an astonishing 126-29-2 record, with a winning percentage of .809. During thistime, Moyer produced 27 Division I NCAAqualifiers out of the 54 total in George Masonhistory.

Each of George Mason wrestling’s NCAAAll-Americans — Kirsch, John Curtis andMatt Finacchio — came under Moyer’s tute-lage. Current assistant coach Curtis is GeorgeMason’s only two-time All-American, as wellas a three-time NCAA qualifier, two-time Co-lonial Athletic Association Wrestler of the Yearand winner of two CAA championships, threeVirginia Division I state titles and one NCAAEastern Regional crown.

In 1992, the Patriots’ first year of CAAaction, they posted a 6-0 conference recordand continued their unbeaten streak to finish13-0-1 overall. In the inaugural CAA Champi-onships, the Patriots emerged as the first con-ference champion. Mike Santamaria, JasonSpezzano and Curtis were each individual win-ners, while Curtis was named CAA Wrestlerof the Year and Moyer was heralded as theconference Coach of the Year.

In 1995 Moyer’s final team posted an11-0 record, the third undefeated season inGeorge Mason wrestling history, and againcaptured the CAA championship. Moyer wasnamed CAA Coach of the Year for the secondtime and Virginia Coach of the Year for thefourth time. The Patriots continued their CAA

stronghold, winning the next two consecutivechampionships under its seventh and currenthead coach, Brian Shaffer.

In his eight years at the helm, Brisn Shaffercompiled a 69-60 record (.535). In addition toleading the Patriots to a CAA championshipin 1996, his first year as head coach, he wasalso named CAA Coach of the Year. In 1997the team won its fourth CAA championship, setting a scoring record for the third consecu-tive year with 101.5 points, shattering the markof 86.5 it set the previous year. This was GeorgeMason’s fourth CAA championship in the sixyears the conference had recognized wrestlingas a championship sport, and the Patriots addedtheir fifth team title in 2001 as they produceda school-record total of six CAA individualchampions and seven NCAA qualifiers.

Under Shaffer, George Mason has pro-duced 29 NCAA qualifiers, including five fresh-men – Sean Shea (1996), Kevin Brandon(1997), Brent Lancaster (1999), DonnieDeFilippis (2000) and Tony Howard (2001) –who were the first Patriots to qualify in theirfirst season of competition. Shea, DeFilippisand Howard have been recognized as the CAARookie of the Year, while Shea was named theOutstanding Wrestler at the CAA Champion-ships in 1997. By winning the CAA title at125 pounds in 2001, Shea became GeorgeMason’s first four-time NCAA qualifier.

Throughout their history the Patriots havecontinually produced accomplished wrestlers, yet the program’s most celebrated era has comewithin the last decade. They have proven theirregional success since joining the CAA by go-ing 53-25 in conference dual meet action, andthey have proven they are a national force, producing at least three NCAA qualifiers ninetimes in the last 15 years, with at least onequalifier in each of the past 19 seasons. Withthe program’s recent power pushing the teamforward, nothing but the best is expected inthe seasons ahead.

Matt Finacchio, Mason’s most recent All-American. Scott Kirsch, Mason’s first All-American.
