of 9,952 for the 2002 fall semester.

South Dakota State has had a rich tradition of success in wrestling.Jason Liles has written his own chapter of excellence and the 2002-
03 season should continue that trend.Under Liles guidance, the Jackrabbits have posted nine straight top
five finishes at the NCAA Division II tournament.They have also been one of the top teams in the national duals tour-
nament.“We want to keep that streak alive and contend for a national champi-
onship,” Liles said. “We need to have as many national qualifiers as pos-sible, and then have some advance to the championship. That keeps youin the hunt for a high place at the nationals.”
Losses have been heavy from the 2001-02 team, which finished thedual season 9-8 before placing third at both the North Central Conferenceand NCAA Division II tournaments.
In addition to the graduation losses, which included three-time All-American Aaron Veskrna, losses also included two other All-Americans.
The Jacks still have leadership with two three-time All-Americansreturning, Tyler Bryant 165 and Tyler Jones, 184. Both were national run-ners-up last year. Both have been in the conference championship matchtwice, eaching winning one NCC title.
Bryant brings a 78-26 record into his final season.Jones was unbeaten going into the national championship match last
year, but lost the title match. A three-time All-American, he enters hissenior season with a 72-15 career record.
Sophomore Jeremy Roe won the NCC title at 141 last year, then losthis first two matches at the national meet. He finished 19-9.
The Jacks will have a lot of new faces in the lineup, mainly redshirtfreshmen although first-year freshman Charlie Senne will be a top candi-date at 125.
The Jacks had a couple of returnees at 133, but senior Kris Dozark isnow the leading candate at that spot. He enters his final year with a 35-35career record.
At 149, the top candidate will be redshirt Jared Barnes. At 157, red-shirts Shawn Vanhove and Joe Kenton could battle to replace Veskrna.
Among the newcomers who could play key roles are Bryan Cowdin, aWorthington, MN, native who earned JC All-America honors last year, andredshirt freshman Tim Boldt, a five-time state place winner in high schoolfrom Arlington.
Heavyweight will be an open battle, with undersized Cody Nehl asone of the top candidates.
As has been the tradition under Coach Liles, the Jacks will again facea Division I team in the dual season, this time taking on the University ofWisconin in a double-dual at River Falls, Wis., where SDSU will also tan-gle with DIII power Wisconsin-LaCrosse.

began competing for wrestling championships in 1964.

• 2002-03 SEASON OUTLOOK •
Now in his 10th season at South Dakota State University, Jason
Liles has built the Jackrabbit wrestling program into one of the most
successful at the NCAA Division II level.
In each of his previous nine seasons, Liles has led the
Jackrabbits to a top-five finish at the NCAA Division II Championships.
SDSU has placed second at nationals twice (1998, 2001), third once
(2002), fourth four times (1994, 1996, 1997, 2000) and fifth two times
(1995, 1999). He also led SDSU to a North Central Conference title in
1997. Liles-coached teams also won NWCA Division II National Duals
titles in 1998 and 2000.
Since Liles took over as head coach, the
SDSU wrestling program has produced
42 All-Americans, 11 national champions
and 29 National Wrestling Coaches
Association All-Academic Team
selections.
The 2001 Division II Wrestling Coach
of the Year, Liles came to SDSU in 1993
after a nine-year stay at Montana State
University-Northern, in Havre, where he
led his squads to NAIA national
championships in 1991 and 1992. Liles'
other coaching credentials include a two-
year stint as head coach at Arcadia (Ohio)
High School and as an assistant at Miami
(Ohio) University, where he earned a
master's degree in 1982.
With a 9-8 record in duals last season, Liles career dual record as
a head coach is 178-77-1 (.697 career winning percentage), including
an 89-44-1 mark (.668 winning percentage) at SDSU.
A 1979 graduate of Bowling Green State University in Ohio, Liles
ended his career as the winningest wrestler in the university's history.
A four-year starter, he was chosen the team?s most valuable wrestler
his last three seasons (1977-79).
Under Liles’ reign, the Jackrabbits have been fourth, fifth, fourth,
fourth, second, fifth, fourth and second at the DII nationals, and won
the DII national duals twice.
In 1993-94, Liles took over the South Dakota State wrestling
program and guided the Jackrabbits to a fourth-place finish in the
NCAA Division II tournament. That marked the highest national finish
for the Jacks in 25 years and the first time that SDSU had two
individual national champions (Chad Lamer at 177 and Justin Blasius
at 190) in the same season.
In the 1996-97 season, SDSU won the NCC title — the first since
1980 – as Liles was named Coach of the Year in the conference. After
coming within 1.5 points of NCC champion Nebraska-Omaha a year
earlier, the Jacks eliminated the suspense early in 1997 by putting six
wrestlers in the finals of the conference tournament in Grand Forks. It
translated to an 80-65 victory over the runner-up Mavericks.
The Jacks’ dual record under Liles is 89-44-1. That record is
more impressive when you consider the Jacks’ schedule, which is
one of the toughest in Division II. The team regularly duals Division I
schools like Iowa, Wyoming, and Nebraska.
Liles came to SDSU after a nine-year stay at MSU-Northern in
Havre, MT. Over his last four seasons at Northern, his teams
sandwiched back-to-back national championships (1991 and 1992)
between a pair of national runner-up finishes (1990 and 1993).
His teams at MSU-N won NAIA District-12 championships in
1988, 1990, 1991 and 1992. During his career at MSU-N he posted a
dual record of 89-33, coached six individual national champions
(including the Outstanding Wrestler at the 1990 national tournament),
and produced 48 All-Americans.
And his teams produced eight academic All-Americans, with the
team showing a 3.00 cumulative grade point average for 1987-1993.
Prior to joining the staff at MSU-N, Liles was assistant wrestling
coach at Miami University in Ohio (1981-84). He played an integral
part in developing three NCAA Division I All-Americans. Miami won
the Mid-America Conference title in 1984 and had an alternate to the
1984 USA Olympic Freestyle team.
Liles was head coach at Arcadia High School in Arcadia, Ohio,
for two seasons, producing back-to-back Blanchard-Valley
Conference championships in 1980 and 1981 when his teams were
20-6 in duals.
Liles is a 1979 graduate of Bowling Green State University in
Ohio, where he was chosen Most Valuable Wrestler his last three
seasons (1977-79). A four-year letterman and starter, he left Bowling
Green as the winningest wrestler in the university’s history. Liles
added a Master's Degree from Miami University in 1982.
He is married to the former Holly Dees of Kremlin, MT. They have
two sons, Walker and Hunter.

He was a two-time All-Americian in college, and also

champion in wrestling.

Peggy Gordon Miller became
South Dakota State University's
18th president on January 1, 1998
following the retirement of Robert
T. Wagner.
Before becoming president of
SDSU, Miller was a senior fellow and acting vice president
for Academic and International Programs at the American
Associat ion of State Col leges and Universit ies in
Washington, D.C. She has extensive higher education
leadership experience at The University of Akron, where she
served as president from 1992 to 1996, and Indiana
University Northwest, where she was chancellor from 1983
to 1992.
Miller earned her doctorate in secondary education from
Indiana University, her master's in English and secondary
education from Northwestern University, and her bachelor's
in English from Transylvania University. She taught high
school in Gary, Indiana, and moved into various teaching
and administrative positions in the Indiana University system.
She amassed a broad range of national experience and
made extensive contacts in the Washington community.
Fred OienAthletic Director/Head of HPER
Dr. Fred Oien became the
11th athletic director at South
Dakota State University on July 1,
1990. Oien earned his Bachelor's
Degree at SDSU in 1972 and has
been on the SDSU staff since
1979, serving as athlet ic
business/ticket manager since
1981.
Oien is a 1968 graduate of Baltic, SD, High School. He
added a Master's Degree at SDSU in 1975, then completed
his doctorate (Ed.D) at the University of Massachusetts-
Amherst in 1979.
Oien taught physical education and health at the
Brookings Middle School 1973-76, during which time he
was varsity golf coach for both boys and girls, and middle
school basketball and football coach. His golf teams won
state championships for both boys and girls.
Oien was also women's golf coach at SDSU, guiding
the Jacks to one North Central Conference championship.
The SDSU women's golf team of 1982 was voted South
Dakota Women's College Team of the Year.
Oien, and his wife, Mary, have two children. Son John is
on the Jackrabbit golf team.

EARLY HISTORYSouth Dakota State University, the
state's land grant institution, was
authorized in 1881 by the Territorial
Legislative Assembly. Territorial council
member John O'Brien Scobey, failing to
obtain the penitentiary for Brookings,
managed to secure Dakota Agricultural
College for his city.
Although allocations fell short of the
actual cost, the school was able open in
the fall of 1884 because the president,
George Lilley, was willing to advance
$500 (one third of his salary) to finish
three rooms in the new Central building.
"Old Central" was soon joined by South
(1885) and North (1887), forming the
nucleus of campus activities for a decade
and a half.
Land-grant universities are designed
to provide a comprehensive education to
students in many fields. That’s why
diversity is an important trademark of a
SDSU education.
DEVELOPMENTDuring the first year of operation, only preparatory classes
were held. College classes started in 1885 with 5 teachers
and 17 freshman and 61 preparatory students. Growth was
slow and erratic for many years, but by the turn of the century
there were 242 students. By 1990 SDSU had an enrollment of
over 9,000 students with nearly 8,100 at the Brookings
campus. It has granted over 46,500 degrees since the college
was chartered in 1881.
COLLEGES ESTABLISHEDThe structure of the college became more complex as
enrollments increased. The first nine chairs of instruction
established in 1884 included agriculture, science,
mathematics, English, modern languages, military tactics,
veterinary science, practical business, political and domestic
economy, and music.
By 1907, the year the name of the institution was changed
to South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic
Arts, there were 22 departments on campus. Reorganization
into the five divisions which formed the basis for the
designation of colleges was completed under President
Charles W. Pugsley in 1923.
In 1964, when "State College" was renamed South
Dakota State University, there were six colleges - Arts a
Science, Agricultural and Biological
Sciences, Home Economics,
Engineering, Nursing, and Pharmacy
and a Graduate Division. A seventh,
General Registration, was added later. In
1975 the Division of Education was
created, which became the College of
Education and Counseling in 1991.

271 ACRE CAMPUSSouth Dakota State University has
grown from a campus of eighty acres
when the institution was founded by the
Territorial Legislature in 1881, to a 271 acre campus with
facilities worth over $220 million. The University owns or
leases another 15,000 acres of land for research throughout
the state.
Peggy Gordon Miller became SDSU's eighteenth
president on January 1, 1998 following the retirement of

SOUTH DAKOTA’S LARGESTWith 9,952 students enrolled for the 2002 fall semester,
SDSU continues to be the largest of all the state's institutions
of higher education.
More than 200 majors, minors and options are available
with more than 2,500 different course offerings. Master's
degrees are offered in more than 30 areas, and doctorates are
available in eight fields. The University also offers degree
programs through the Sioux Falls Center for Public Higher
Education. Evening, RDTN, Internet, and off-campus courses
are available through the Office of Academic Affairs and
Outreach.
Seventy-five percent of entering freshman are in the
upper-half of their high school graduating class and 40
percent are in the top 25 percent. Seventy percent are
residents of South Dakota, 20 percent come from 46 states
and 41 international countries.
