South Dakota State University, the state's land grant institution, wasauthorized in 1881 by the TerritorialLegislative Assembly. Territorialcouncil member John O'BrienScobey, failing to obtain the penitentiary for Brookings, managed to secure Dakota Agricultural College for hiscity.

Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, theschool was able open in the fall of 1884 because thepresident, George Lilley, was willing to advance $500 (onethird of his salary) to finish three rooms in the new Centralbuilding. "Old Central" was soon joined by South (1885)and North (1887), forming the nucleus of campusactivities for a decade and a half.

Land-grant universities are designed to provide acomprehensive education to students in many fields. That’s why diversity is an important trademark of a SDSUeducation.DEVELOPMENT

During the first year of operation, only preparatoryclasses were held. College classes started in 1885 with 5teachers and 17 freshman and 61 preparatory students.Growth was slow and erratic for many years, but by theturn of the century there were 242 students. By 1990SDSU had an enrollment of over 9,000 students withnearly 8,100 at the Brookings campus. It has grantedover 46,500 degrees since the college was chartered in1881.

COLLEGES ESTABLISHEDThe structure of the college became more complex

as enrollments increased. The first nine chairs ofinstruction established in 1884 included agriculture, science, mathematics, English, modern languages,

military tactics, veterinary science, practical business, political anddomestic economy, and music.

By 1907, the year the name ofthe institution was changed to SouthDakota State College of Agricultureand Mechanic Arts, there were 22departments on campus.Reorganization into the five divisionswhich formed the basis for thedesignation of colleges wascompleted under President CharlesW. Pugsley in 1923.

In 1964, when "State College"was renamed South Dakota StateUniversity, there were six colleges -Arts a Science, Agricultural andBiological Sciences, HomeEconomics, Engineering, Nursing, and Pharmacy and a GraduateDivision. A seventh, GeneralRegistration, was added later. In1975 the Division of Education wascreated, which became the Collegeof Education and Counseling in

1991. Today, degrees are offered through these eight

colleges: Agricultural and Biological Sciences Arts and Science Education and Counseling, Engineering Family and Consumer Sciences General Registration Nursing Pharmacy Graduate School

271 ACRE CAMPUSSouth Dakota State University has grown from a

campus of eighty acres when the institution was foundedby the Territorial Legislature in 1881, to a 271 acrecampus with facilities worth over $220 million. TheUniversity owns or leases another 15,000 acres of landfor research throughout the state.

Now in his 11th season at South Dakota State University,Jason Liles has built the Jackrabbit wrestling program into oneof the most successful at the NCAA Division II level.

In each of his previous 10 seasons, Liles has led theJackrabbits to a top-10 finish at the NCAA Division IIChampionships, including nine top-five finishes. SDSU hasplaced second at nationals twice (1998, 2001), third once(2001) fourth four times (1994,1996, 1997, 2000) and fifth twotimes (1995, 1999).

He also led SDSU to a NorthCentral Conference title in 1997.

And Liles-coached teams wonNWCA Division II National Dualstitles in 1998 and 2000.

Since Liles took over as headcoach, the SDSU wrestlingprogram has produced 44 All-Americans, 11 national championsand 30 National WrestlingCoaches Association All-AcademicTeam selections.

The 2001 NCAA Division IIWrestling Coach of the Year, Lilescame to SDSU in 1993 after anine-year stay at Montana State University-Northern, in Havre, where he led his squads to NAIA national championships in1991 and 1992.

Liles was inducted into the MSU-Northern athletic Hall ofFame during the fall of 2003.

Liles’ other coaching credentials include a two-year stintas head coach at Arcadia (Ohio) High School and as anassistant at Miami (Ohio) University, where he earned amaster’s degree in 1982.

With a 12-9 record in duals last season, Liles’ career dualrecord as a collegiate head coach is 190-91-1 (.675 careerwinning percentage), including a 101-53-1 mark (.655 winningpercentage) at SDSU. He ranks second on the career victorieslist at SDSU, trailing Warren Williamson, who compiled a 134-74-9 dual record over 16 seasons from 1957-68 and 1970-73.

A 1979 graduate of Bowling Green State University inOhio, Liles ended his career as the winningest wrestler in theuniversity’s history. A four-year starter, he was chosen theteam’s most valuable wrestler his last three seasons (1977-79).

In 1993-94, Liles took over the South Dakota Statewrestling program and guided the Jackrabbits to a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Division II tournament. That markedthe highest national finish for the Jacks in 25 years and thefirst time that SDSU had two individual national champions(Chad Lamer at 177 and Justin Blasius at 190) in the sameseason.

In the 1996-97 season, SDSU won the NCC title — thefirst since 1980 – as Liles was named Coach of the Year in theconference. After coming within 1.5 points of NCC championNebraska-Omaha a year earlier, the Jacks eliminated thesuspense early in 1997 by putting six wrestlers in the finals ofthe conference tournament in Grand Forks. It translated to an80-65 victory over the runner-up Mavericks.

The Jacks’ dual record under Liles is more impressivewhen you consider the Jacks’ schedule, which is one of thetoughest in Division II. The team regularly duals Division Ischools like Iowa, Wyoming, and Nebraska.

Over his last four seasons at Northern, his teamssandwiched back-to-back national championships (1991 and1992) between a pair of national runner-up finishes (1990 and1993).

His teams at MSU-N won NAIA District-12 championshipsin 1988, 1990, 1991 and 1992. During his career at MSU-Nhe posted a dual record of 89-33, coached six individualnational champions (including the Outstanding Wrestler at the1990 national tournament), and produced 48 All-Americans.

And his teams produced eight academic All-Americans,with the team showing a 3.00 cumulative grade point averagefor 1987-1993.

Prior to joining the staff at MSU-N, Liles was assistantwrestling coach at Miami University in Ohio (1981-84). Heplayed an integral part in developing three NCAA Division I All-Americans. Miami won the Mid-America Conference title in1984 and had an alternate to the 1984 USA Olympic Freestyleteam.

Liles was head coach at Arcadia High School in Arcadia,Ohio, for two seasons, producing back-to-back Blanchard-Valley Conference championships in 1980 and 1981 when histeams were 20-6 in duals.

He is married to the former Holly Dees of Kremlin, MT.They have two sons, Walker and Hunter.
