Super-stormSandyleftyourcommunitywithmanydeadanddamagedtrees.Thesetreescreatedefiningneighborhoodfeaturesandprovidenumerousbenefitstoresidents.ThroughtheNJTreeRecoveryCampaign,youcanhelpyourcommunityresidentsreplantthosemissingtrees.SignyourtownupfortheNJTreeRecoveryCampaignandyouwillreceiveupto2,000seedlingstodistributetoresidentsforfree.Theseedlings:
• arebarerootandrangeinsizefromsixto24inchesinlength,dependingonspecies• areavailableforpick-upbetweenMarch29andMay4(seeattachedlistofpick-uplocations)• mustbestoredinacool,damplocationpriortodistribution
Pleasenote:1,000seedlingstakeupabouthalfapickuptruckbedofspace.Yourcommunitywillberesponsiblefordistributingtheseedlingsandinformationalmaterialsfreeofchargewithin10daysofreceivingthem.Thisistomakesurethetreesdistributedhavethebestchanceofestablishinginyourcommunities.Toparticipateintheprogram,acommunitymust:
1.Obtainapprovalfromgovernmentofficialstoreceiveanddistributetreeseedlings.Werequireanelectedofficial(e.g.Mayor,council)orauthorizeddepartmentrepresentativetosupportthecommunity’sparticipationinthisprogram.
2.Identifyalocalgroup(municipaldepartment,board,nonprofit,orotherorganizedgroup)toorganizeanddistributethetreeseedlings.
3.Provideaplanforhowthetreeseedlingswillbedistributedtoresidents.Developasimpleoutlineofactivities,timeline,andresponsibilitiesnecessarytodistributetreeseedlingpackets.
4.Storetreesinacoolplaceanddistributethemnolaterthan10daysafterbeingreceivedfromthedistributionsite.
5.Separatebundlesoftreesintogroupsof5fordistribution;bagsandtagswithspeciesnameswillbeprovided.
