The 8th Street Beer Garden is located south of the 295 overpass, ad-jacent to the historic Car Barn and Navy Yard in SE Capital Hill. The area has seen little private investment compared with the thriving Bar-racks Row stretch of 8th street. This project seeks to reconnect the south end of 8th Street with that north of the overpass by activating the street with outdoor seating, creating a visual presence on the street, as well as affording a unique destination for both neighborhood residents, as well as those visiting Barracks Row, the Navy Yard, and National Stadium, or coming from else ware in the District, as well as outside visitors to the region.

Activating the StreetLocated in a low traffic area, it became necessary to visually connect to the Bar-racks Row stretch of 8th Street. This was accomplished by including café seating outside, as well as large windows, that allow by-passers to view the activity in-side. Additionally the garden has trellis benches, hat open up the fenced garden to allow views into the garden. Creating a strong corner that acts as a visual landmark while still respecting the historic context, and neighboring buildings. Large windows open on to the street revealing the undulating ceiling, pulling guest from the entryway through the dining room.

PhasingThe clients recognizing the in-evitable development of this area, but having a limited bud-get proposed a temporary struc-ture that would act as an ini-tial incubator but be torn down in 5 - 10 years. Concerned with the precedent this would set for future development in the neighborhood, as well as the environmental stewardship issues with this approach, the design team suggested a phased ap-proach, to allow for simple cost effective initial structures that could grow over time.

SustainableWith a large portion of the site garden area, that is rain per-vious, and rainwater collection for watering the garden area, the project seeks simple solutions to traditional problems. Additional strategies include the use of wood sourced from urban tree removal for the rain screen areas, as well as the interior furnishings and wall finishes.

Prototyping Because fixtures and finished elements will be built by the design team and client, an ongoing process of prototyping has occurred to develop systems for the final design. Below, shelves that will be used behind the bar, and in other free standing locations.

[Stack ] Cabinet
This cabinet was conceived with two modern day inevitable circumstances in mind, changing storage requirements and configuration due to relocation and re-configuration
of spaces. Material selection considered economy and
durability necessary in a modern [semi] nomadic lifestyle. Designed as two units, the cabinet is able to be
used both stacked or as a pair, and placed on the floor side by side or in separate locations. Creating two separate cabinets also allows them to be packed with belongings during a move. The exterior is free of hardware to prevent damage during moves, as well as to maintain a minimalist aesthetic.

Oxford Public Library – Youth Department Expansion, Oxford, MI 2,500 sf,Construction & Furnishings Cost $255,000 Dec 2005
A renovation to an existing library, this project challenges traditional form making strategies. Utilizing digital design and intuitive digi-tal strategies for fabrication to reduce cost, enhance design intent and accomplish the clients pro-grammatic needs. Collaboration with the fabricator to optimize design/fabrication strategies was accom-plish with computational modeling and CNC fabrication tools.
The design concept was to use a series of spirals originat-ing from the transi-tional zone of the main foyer to acti-vate the space of the New Teen and Technology Area. The curving geometry would be expressed through a series of elements, including the entry vestibule, carpet patterns and shelving.
Fabrication Driven Strategy
Cabinets are designed as curved units, and CNC cut from digital model. The design now includes increased complexity not possible previously - mobile units on castors, and the cabinets create a tapered spiral design.

The initial concept proposal utilized orthogo-nal mill-work constructed with faceted pieces. This approach would not allow the cabinets to be mobile, and exceeded the budget allocated for the mill-work.
