These are General Purpose containers (GP) orStandard Dry Vans which accounts for the large majority and is used for most general cargo commodities.
The standard external height is 8.5 feet although 9.5 feet (High cube) is becoming common. The standard external width is fixed at 8 feet for all units.

• Open top : Soft detachable roof tarpaulin for machinery requiring top loading and over height cargo.
• Half height : Open top, for high density cargoes such as ingots, drums, heavy steelwork.

• Half height container : Efficiency factor Since there is practically no difference in maximum gross weights between full height (8.5 feet) and half-height (4.25 feet) containers, it is of mutual advantage to both shipper and container line to ship the cargo in a full height slot using two half height containers loaded with high density cargo.
The shipper is able to ship twice the amount of cargo within a single full height slot, and the Line gets freight for two half-height containers.

• Flat racks : No side walls or roof. Ends may be collapsible. Used for out of gauge cargoes and restricted loading situations.
• Platforms : Flat bed with or without corner castings. Limited numbers of high rated equipment, over-length cargoes and special projects

• Tanktainer : Tank within an ISO frame of various types. For liquid cargoes in bulks including food-stuff and hazardous cargoes.
• Bulktainer : Top loading ports and door discharge shoot. For dry cargoes in bulk such as malt, sugar.

• Refrigerated : Integral refrigeration, electrically powered self-contained unit for transport of perishables world-wide to connection to terminals and ships electrical power sockets.
• Insulated : Has top and bottom end ports and connects to ships or port’s refrigeration system. Used for reefer cargoes on specialized ships operating in Australia / New Zealand, South Africa trades
