WHAT IS: AIESEC?
AIESEC is the largest student run organization in the world, where the
international, national and local executive boards are re-elected by her members in a yearly cycle. That is not the only thing that makes AIESEC unique: AIESEC has
been around since 1948 and has volunteers spread across 60% of the
Earth, in 113 countries and territories, and is still growing. All these volunteers believe in the space AIESEC provides to develop every young person's leadership potential by offering a position within the local, national and international chapters. These positions allow the leaders of the future to challenge themselves, step out of their comfort zone and develop their personal and professional potential. all
whilst engaging in international and intercultural experiences.
CAREER&YOUFebruary 2013 Amazing stories of career champs around
the world. If it’s not global, it’s not us.
DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP POTENTIALAIESEC, originally the abbreviation for Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales (International students association of the economic and commercial sciences), was founded by students in
7 countries in 1948, right after the second World War and aims to develop the leaders of the future. We interviewed a
couple of AIESECers to learn about this global organization.
The thought behind the foundation is to
prevent a similar occurrence by providing
the future generation of leaders with a
platform to interact with each other, a
platform to open borders and allow for first hand intercultural experiences to promote
active leadership and cross-cultural understandings. Since the foundation
AIESEC has spread to 113 countries and is still lead by students today.
The organization operates similar to
many organizations: an executive board
that aligns the strategy to the international
goals and ambitions; a middle management that leads the different teams towards their day to day tasks and dedicated members that engage with stakeholders on many
different levels. AIESEC International is a
team consisting of the strategic core and
global representatives working from the
headquarters in Rotterdam, The
Netherlands, one of the founding countries.
Each AIESEC country also has a national board, called the Member Committee that oversees the activities in each of the AIESEC
countries and offers support to the local chapters that can be found at university
campuses all across the globe.
In AIESEC US, there are currently 35 local chapters on campuses in 19 different states. Just like the local committees in the
rest of the world, the different offices in the
US offer students short- and long-term
internships in the 112 other countries that AIESEC is a part of. The thought behind the
external orientation is simple: to offer a
person as many international, perspective-widening, life-changing experiences.

AIESEC UNITED STATES.

A question some of the AIESEC’ers asked us were pretty to the point. “Why would you
stay in your own country, if there is an
entire world at your feet that AIESEC can
offer you?” Each local chapter partners with
companies and organizations in their area, allowing for the internships to be offered to the international candidates. To make sure
AIESEC US's local committees open up these
positions for international exchange
participants, each chapter has a team
responsible for sales.
The members of these teams gather their, often first, professional experience being
part of the teams within AIESEC, where their job descriptions entail company meetings, negotiations, public speaking during class promotion presentations, account management of company portfolio's, leadership and coaching of teams and, just like any organization, making sure the local committee complies with any rules and
regulations that affect non-profit organizations in the United States.
Hands-on, intercultural and leadership experiences on so many
levels.
AIESEC, to those who know the
organization, is often referred to as the
best kept secret. Once companies have
decided to go on board with the HR-solutions AIESEC can offer them, they
decide to become partners year after year. Students that have had the chance to go on
an international experience where they
might have volunteered in Sri Lanka or have
worked for Microsoft in Dubai say they have rediscovered themselves and found a better version they didn't think they ever would.
Are you a student or recent graduate
looking for the unique experience AIESEC
can offer you, one that will give you a new
look on the world, a new you in the mirror and a competitive advantage in the world

and professional backgrounds, but will also give your employees an international, intercultural experience right there on the
work floor?
Are you an NGO or non-profit like us,
and are looking for volunteers that have
that extra motivation and broader perspective that can help your organization
flourish?Where your answers to the questions yes?
Then AIESEC is the organization for you!
