Brian Hearne Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Zinc Australia

Ahead of this milestone, we have taken the opportunity to refresh what it is that Xstrata stands for both as an employer and partner to a wide range

of stakeholders, and as a company that produces products essential in people’s everyday lives and central to global economic development.

The outcome of this refresh is as relevant to us in North Queensland as it is in any part of our global footprint. That is because it makes clear that creating sustainable value for our stakeholders is as much our objective as delivering industry-leading returns to our shareholders.

Our stakeholders are the communities in which we operate: the residents, governments, organisations, unions, service providers, suppliers and critically, our employees.

In January, we launched a revised mission statement and set of values that distinguish and differentiate Xstrata. As we continue to grow and welcome new people to the Xstrata team, it is all the more important that we put our values at the heart of everything we do. We must also communicate what makes Xstrata different visually, so over the next few months, you will start to notice small changes to the look and feel of our publications such as Mine to Market, websites and communications.

This revised positioning is particularly important as we compete for new people within the Australian resources industry.

The latest available statistics show that in the 12 months to February 2011, employment in the minerals industry grew by 23% compared to total employment growth in Australia of 2.7%. Mining

employment has almost trebled in the past decade and further strong growth is forecast.

Xstrata North Queensland has more than $1.6 billion expansion projects underway or in planning to expand our mining operations in the region and concentrate production in Mount Isa.

Xstrata Zinc have already seen a great increase in employee numbers, recording a 27% increase in 2011 alone; that means an extra 304 people now engaged in the zinc business.

But there are still positions available in our operations and we will continue to compete against other companies to attract skilled workers during a global shortage affecting many industries.

For our existing employees and potential candidates, Xstrata offers the promise of an environment where we do what we say, we act decisively to create value, we hold ourselves accountable, we dare to be different and we act with care.

These are the reasons why people choose to work with Xstrata. We are doing all we can through recruitment in Australia and now also internationally, to attract them to our collective North Queensland operations.

The year ahead is an exciting one for Xstrata. We will continue to strive for zero harm workplaces through continuous health and safety improvements and initiatives being implemented across our sites.

The health and safety our all our employees and contractors is vital to everyone at Xstrata and will remain our number one focus throughout the year.

We look forward to another successful and safe year in 2012, and role you will play in helping us achieve that.

In March 2012, we will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the creation of Xstrata through the initial public offering in London. Over this remarkably short period of time, we have built one of the world’s largest and most successful mining and metals groups. Xstrata now employs more than 70,000 people in over 20 countries.

The Community Information Session, held at the Cloncurry Bowls Club, included a presentation by our General Manager Myles Johnston

–updating on our performance and also elaborating on our recent transition from open pit mining to underground mining and magnetite processing.

Applause filled the room when Myles announced the further $2 million contribution towards the Cloncurry Community Precinct setting the celebratory mood for the barbeque which was held after the information session.

Local Cloncurry resident, John Senden regularly attends our Community Information Sessions and said he and his wife enjoyed the afternoon and the chance to regularly keep abreast of what is happening with our company in the Cloncurry area.

“My wife and I try to attend all the Community Information Sessions and think that it is really good that large companies like Xstrata let the community know what is going on,” John said.

“We really enjoyed the Community Information Session and thought that the announcement of the additional $2 million towards the Cloncurry Community Precinct was fantastic.”

Myles Johnston said the precinct is the first major social infrastructure project Ernest Henry has supported in Cloncurry.

“We provided $750,000 towards the precinct in 2010 under the Xstrata Community Program North Queensland however we wanted to invest more through this program to ensure all of the features suggested during the project’s consultation and design phases could be incorporated.

“The Cloncurry Community Precinct will create a state of the art facility for our local community and we are extremely proud to be the largest financial supporter of the project,” Myles said.

The Cloncurry Community Precinct involves the refurbishment of the historical Cloncurry Shire Hall and the inclusion of a library, art gallery, function rooms, amenities and communal outdoor space.

“Our $2.75 million contribution towards the Cloncurry Community Precinct reaffirms our commitment to supporting growth and development in Cloncurry for the benefit of current and future generations,” Myles said.

Cloncurry Shire Mayor, Andrew Daniels, said the Cloncurry Community Precinct will benefit the entire community.

“Ernest Henry Mining will be remembered for a long time for its contribution towards this project,” he said.

The Cloncurry Community Precinct is expected to open in June 2012.

“ The Cloncurry Community Precinct will create a state of the art facility for our local community ...”

Alan RichardsonAlan commenced working with us at EHM more than 14 years ago as a Production Driller in our open pit mine. Over the years Alan has also worked as Drill and Blast Supervisor, Mine Development Superintendent, and more recently as Open Pit Mine Manager (from May until December 2011).

Alan was honoured to have been invited to push the button for the final blast in our Ernest Henry open pit.

“I’ve worked in the pit and with the drill and blast team for my nearly 14 year career at Ernest Henry, so pushing the button to initiate the final shot was a special moment for me,” Alan said.

“I’m proud to have been involved with the development of the open pit mine at Ernest Henry and to be part of the team that has seen the mine through to its completion.”

Bucko and GroomyDays after Alan initiated the final blast, a pair of Mining Technicians known as “Bucko” and “Groomy” loaded and hauled the last 200 tonnes of ore from our open pit mine.

Bill Buckley (Bucko) and Stephen Evans (Groomy) have both worked with us at Ernest Henry for more than six years in the Mining Department and they realised at the start of their shift that it would be their crew taking the final ore.

“There was a sense of relief amongst the crews when we finished in the pit because we were feeling ready to move on and start the next job,” Groomy said.

“We’re working now to cart top soil for rehabilitation works on the southern waste rock dump and to cart stockpiled ore from the Run of Mine to feed the crusher.”

Both Bucko and Groomy are looking forward to working on the Mount Margaret Mining Project this year.

Alley BrushWhile some of our open pit workers have sadly left us, retiring or taking up roles elsewhere, Alley Brush is one of around 80 open pit employees, like Bucko and Groomy, who have transitioned into new roles at our site.

Alley has worked with us for almost six years as a Mining Technician operating haul trucks in the open pit mine and is now working as a Services Technician with the pump crew on underground dewatering.

Before the pit was completed, Alley undertook three months of training with Barminco, our underground development contractor, learning skills and gaining exposure to various roles in the underground environment.

Alley says working underground is a challenge but one she finds interesting and enjoyable.

“It’s different to working in the pit where you can see a lot more around you. There’s a lot more radio communication underground and a lot less space” Alley said.

Open pit to undergroundIn December 2011, our Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) operation announced its successful transition from open pit mining to underground mining and magnetite processing.

Here we introduce you to just some of the many people who worked to complete our Ernest Henry open pit, enabling production activities to commence in our new underground mine.

Open pit mine factsOur open pit mine was officially opened in October 1997 and completed in December 2011.

The completed mine is approximately 1.5 and 1.3 kilometres across at its widest points and 530 metres deep.

Close to 700 million tonnes of material was mined throughout the mine’s life.

OPERATIONS

Underground mine factsThe “first cut” or blast for our underground mine’s decline took place in February 2008.

Since the first cut the underground decline has progressed more than 5,000 metres.

At the end of December 2011, the decline was 980 metres vertically below the surface, or more than 430 metres below the floor of the final open pit.

Ore will be trucked from our underground mine via the decline at rates of approximately three million tonnes per annum until the shaft is commissioned in 2013.

Production will then ramp up to approximately six million tonnes of ore per annum at full capacity, enabling an average of 50,000 tonnes of copper and 70,000 ounces of gold in concentrate to be produced annually from 2013 until 2024.

Looking forward …Since our transition, underground development works have advanced with a focus on key headings for access to the base of the shaft and for ventilation and dewatering systems.

General Manager, Myles Johnston, says 2012 is set to be a challenging but exciting year.

“Underground production is progressing steadily and we will start to ramp up production rates over the next few months,” Myles said.

“Commissioning is underway on various winders in preparation for the main shaft sink to commence and I’m pleased to say we’re on schedule to begin production at our Mount Margaret Mining Project in the second half of this year.”

The packed auditorium broke into elation as the Honourable Justice John Dowsett handed down in favour of the Kalkadoon Nation and praised

the significant role the Kalkadoon people had played in the development of mining and pastoral industries in Mount Isa and North West Queensland.

“Your (Kalkadoon people) contribution to our history and the price you have paid for our prosperity will not be forgotten,” Justice Dowsett said.

The Kalkadoon now have exclusive rights to several parcels of land within the 39,000 square kilometre claim.

They hold non-exclusive rights to the remaining land in the Burke, Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Boulia, McKinlay and Carpentaria local authority areas.

Kalkadoon elder Ron Page said the decision gave Kalkadoon people a sense of identity and pride.

“For too long our people have been walking around knowing they own this country but it hasn’t been acknowledged,” Ron said.

Kalkadoon spokeswoman Valerie Craigie said the decision marked a new beginning for the Kalkadoon people.

“It’s an enormous victory,” Valerie said.“Our ancestors have fought a long hard

battle and we’ve continued the fight in a legal way.

“Our elders are the most important people in the claim.

“They had to prove they had a constant connection to the land.

“Without them we wouldn’t be here,” she said.

Steve de Kruijff – Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Copper North Queensland, said that the hearing marked a historic and landmark day for the Kalkadoon Nation and congratulated the Kalkadoon people on receiving recognition by the Australian legal system as the “traditional owners” of the region.

“I know I speak for everyone that we all share in the joy and elation of the Kalkadoon people in realising the end of an 18 year plus battle for their Native Title rights,” Steve said.

“The strength of the Kalkadoon People’s fighting spirit has prevailed and this decision will provide a new found confidence and fresh start for many who have felt anguish, grief, and loss for many years.

“Indeed, while we are here to officially acknowledge and celebrate the Kalkadoon on their Native Title determination, I’d like to think that we are also here today to recognise and celebrate the strengthening of our relationship with the Kalkadoon, and the contributions of our company towards forging a better quality of life for Indigenous Australians living in Mount Isa.

“We have been there every step of the way on this journey, and have supported the Kalkadoon people in their claim for Native Title,” he said.

Mount Isa Mines, along with the Kalkadoon applicants signed off on an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) that will see Xstrata and Kalkadoon work more closely together in all facets of cultural heritage, employment, enterprise development and capacity building. This ILUA will see our relationship grow beyond being just a good neighbour.

In signing the ILUA we also approved an official Cultural Heritage Management Plan for our Mining Lease, which represents some 30,000 hectares, and covers a significant area within the Kalkadoon People’s Native Title region.

On signing the ILUA Steve said it is testament to what can happen when there is mutual desire and understanding between two parties in working towards a common goal.

“I am confident that our ILUA will assist the Kalkadoon Elders to pass down knowledge to the next generation, and for us to see an increased number of Kalkadoon people employed in our operations,” Steve said.

The $1 million funding from the Xstrata Community Program North Queensland will be used to complete construction of a new 12 bedroom

$3 million facility on the doorstop of Townsville Hospital.

Steve de Kruijff – Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Copper North Queensland made the announcement in front of 300 guests and members of the Ronald McDonald House Board in Mount Isa at the annual Ronald McDonald House North Queensland charity ball on 18 February, for which Xstrata Mount Isa Mines was also a Gold Sponsor.

Steve said that childhood illness can have a devastating effect on families, on top of the fear and uncertainty that exists while managing a family when a child is in hospital, often for extended periods of time.

“Our partnership with Ronald McDonald House will deliver tangible and long lasting benefits to north Queensland families of seriously ill children when they need it most,” Steve said.

“We are very fortunate to have a Ronald McDonald House located in Townsville providing families with the biggest currency of all when a child is sick – TIME,” he said.

“Living in north west Queensland can often mean that specialist care is a long way from home, especially for premature babies, and without access to the House a large number of families would need to go to great expense to be with their children while they undergo treatment.

“We believe that to develop sustainable communities we must help deliver essential health and ancillary services to our host communities,” Steve said.

Since its establishment in 2004 by founder and Board member George Colbran, Ronald McDonald House has assisted almost 300 families from Xstrata’s local north Queensland communities.

Of those, more than 150 families were from Mount Isa, 20 were from Cloncurry, and 70 from the Bowen Basin.

Steve said another compelling factor for our support was that a large percentage of those families assisted were also our valued employees.

“Based on those statistics, I would say that the House in Townsville is not just a ‘nice to have’ service but a necessity.

“We are delighted to support Ronald McDonald House through our Xstrata Community Program North Queensland with this $1 million donation, and look forward to working with the charity in the coming years to help them extend their much-needed services to even more families in north Queensland,” Steve said.

Mr Paul Rissman, Ronald McDonald House North Queensland Chairman said the Board, Executive Officer and their many Townsville volunteers were overwhelmed by Xstrata’s generous show of support.

“We would like to sincerely thank Xstrata for this wonderful and overwhelming donation towards our project,” Paul said.

“Due to the growing demand for our services, we have outgrown our current facilities and have been fundraising for the past five years with the goal of being able to double the capacity of Ronald McDonald House in Townsville from 12 to 24 rooms so we can accommodate more north Queensland families in need.”

“We started with $1 million from our fundraising efforts to commence the project, received a further $1 million grant from Ronald McDonald House Australia, and now Xstrata has provided us with the final $1 million needed to secure the future of our $3 million project.”

Since opening in 2004, Ronald McDonald House has provided critical accommodation to over 1,400 families while their children are being treated at the adjacent Townsville Hospital, and have been at full capacity every night.

“Sadly, that means we have had to turn away many families every night who require critical accommodation at a time of great need. These families have to find accommodation

and often resort to caravan parks, friends, or expensive motels, and then commute daily to the hospital to support their children during medical treatment,” Paul said.

“ Ninety-eight per cent of families who stay with us come from regional areas of north Queensland, and we receive daily feedback from our families that Ronald McDonald House provides them with a home away from home and a friendly and caring environment that supports the entire family unit.”

Paul also said the partnership with Xstrata, through the Xstrata Community Program North Queensland, will now enable them to get on with the job of helping more families in need.

“We can now refocus our fundraising to deliver additional services for families such as a Learning Program to assist children catch up missed schooling while suffering sickness or illness, extending assistance to local Townsville families with programs like the Ronald McDonald House Family Room to provide a home away from home at the Townsville Hospital, and assisting with the recent establishment of Queensland’s first Ronald McDonald House family retreat in Palm Cove which provides holiday accommodation for families who have missed out on a holiday due to the illness of their child,” Paul said.

The $3 million Ronald McDonald House project includes a minor refurbishment of the original 12 room facility. Construction of the new 12 room facility commenced in July 2011 and is scheduled for completion in September 2012.

$1 Million for Ronald McDonald HouseXstrata has provided a much-needed $1 million boost to Ronald McDonald House North Queensland to help them support north Queensland families with seriously ill babies and children.

OPERATIONS

The BSOC Deeps project commenced in mid 2010 and has deepened the existing pit to target ore at a depth of 400 metres below ground surface level,

100 metres below the previous design. It adds approximately 14 million tonnes of ore to the production profile, extending the life of the pit by four years to 2016.

A review to expand HHOC pit identified the opportunity for a narrow cutback to the existing pit, targeting additional ore at depth and north of the current design.

The completion of the HHOC project has extended the open pit mine’s life by an additional two years until 2013 and targets an additional 2.4 million tonnes of ore.

Xstrata Zinc Australia Chief Operating Officer Brian Hearne said the driver for the two projects was sustaining production levels.

“The projects add value to our business and are great examples of our organic growth opportunities,” Brian said.

“Congratulations to the teams who have delivered these projects on schedule and on budget.”

Mount Isa is home to one of the world’s largest zinc operations and future expansion projects are supported by our significant zinc resource base.

Work is continuing on our other current projects: the George Fisher Mine Expansion ($274 million), George Fisher North Crushing Plant ($36 million), the Concentrator Debottlenecking Project ($70 million) and the Lady Loretta Mine ($246 million).

Xstrata Zinc completes open cut expansion projects

Xstrata Zinc’s Mount Isa operations reached significant milestones in late 2011 with the completion of the $133 million Black Star Open Cut (BSOC) Deeps Project and $40 million Handlebar Hill Open Cut (HHOC) Project.

Each year, Xstrata Mount Isa Mines welcomes a group of university students that have travelled from all over the country in order to participate in our three month Vacation Work Program run from November to February.

From over 2,200 applications received this year, 86 students were selected to participate in the 2011–12 program.

This year, 39 of our Vacation students are Mount Isa locals, with the remaining students coming from all over Australia including Melbourne, Brisbane and Townsville.

Predominantly, the Vacation Work Program focuses on attracting standout students studying mining related degrees, however we also offer local students studying non-mining related degrees administration and labouring roles.

Sue Wicks – Human Resources Advisor North Queensland, said the initiative supports our graduate program which attracts balanced and creative individuals enthusiastic about career development.

“The vacation program acts as a talent pipeline and assists in the recruitment of individuals who are knowledgeable and passionate about our business,” Sue said.

“Students who successfully complete the vacation program are highly regarded for employment through the graduate program when they finish their studies.

“Running this initiative also allows us to promote the employment and lifestyle benefits of living and working in the Mount Isa community.”

Current Mechanical Engineering vacation student and Xstrata scholarship holder Liam Tyler said the vacation program has given him the opportunity to gain invaluable and relevant industry experience in his field.

“Xstrata’s Vacation Program has given me the chance to see the side of engineering that you don’t get to experience at uni,” Liam said.

“I have had the opportunity to be involved in some very interesting projects and working with experienced engineers has been particularly rewarding.”

Xstrata Vacation Work Program

Clancy and Andrew, who are existing Xstrata employees, have taken the opportunity to upskill through the Cadetship Program while Mitchell is

a school leaver who applied for the program following an information session held at his school.

As part of the cadetship program all participants undertake part time study while working full-time in our operations. Each participant is also matched with a mentor who closely monitors their work and assists them in both their study and employment.

Mike Westerman – General Manager of MICO said the Cadetship Program aims to develop participants’ skills while at the same time assisting them to become qualified Technical Professionals.

“Our North Queensland Cadetship Program is unique as it offers valuable on-the-job experience and training while supporting the participants through the completion of a university qualification in their nominated area of study,” Mike said.

“The Cadetship Program offers many business opportunities including reducing costs by limiting a need for contractors, improving productivity by relieving pressure on Qualified Professionals and closing the skills gap by developing junior professionals,” he said.

Mine Surveying Cadet, Mitchell Wilcox is the initiative’s newest recruit having started the program in early January.

“I am really enjoying the program so far, I’m having heaps of fun and learning new things every day,” Mitchell said.

“Becoming a Mine Surveyor with Xstrata is something that really excites me, this cadetship is an awesome opportunity and being able to work with, and learn from, some great guys has been invaluable.”

To be eligible for the program, potential cadets must be motivated and have a genuine interest in developing into a qualified Technical Professional, reside permanently in Mount Isa and have satisfactorily completed Queensland Year 12 mathematics.

Our North Queensland Cadetship Program will employ two more cadets in early 2013 with applications opening later this year. More information will be available at www.xstratacareers.com from November.

“ Our Cadetship Program offers valuable on-the-job experience and training ...”

2011 Xstrata Skills Centre award recipients

Xstrata Skills Centre Awards

2011 A Year Of Success2011 heralded a successful year for the Xstrata Skills Centre with a number of awards, medals, and new programs.

The end of year presentation was held in December to acknowledge our apprentices and trainees for their successful year of studies.

New in 2011 was the Xstrata Indigenous Traineeship program which saw 25 trainees commence a Certificate II in Surface Extraction Operations, coordinated by the Xstrata Skills Centre.

Dave Watson – Superintendent Xstrata Skills Centre, acknowledged the Xstrata Skills Centre’s training partners: Mount Isa TAFE; Krause Health and Safety; Spinifex State College; and the Motor Trades Association

(MTA) who in partnership with Xstrata tailor training to suit the needs of apprentices and trainees.

With the assistance of these partners, the Xstrata Skills Centre was awarded the Qld Training Award’s Industry Collaboration Award during 2011.

It was also a successful year for apprentices Colin Phillips and Kieran Punch who both received awards at the prestigious Mining Industry Skills Centre Training Awards, held in Brisbane last September and the Queensland Training Awards held in Townsville in July.

One of the highlights during 2011 was the Xstrata Mount Isa Mining Expo where the apprentices and trainees offered a hands-on, fully operational display showcasing the Xstrata Apprenticeship Program, allowing visitors to try their hand at different trades. The QMEA’s 4Girls2 program aimed at exposing female high school students to the mining industry

was also a feature of the Xstrata Skills Centre display at the Mining Expo.

Another highlight was the 2011 Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo and Mardi Gras parade which saw the apprentices design and construct a head-turning float themed ‘Rocky, rodeo and rock stars’. Around 30 apprentices including boilermakers, electricians and diesel fitters, and Indigenous trainees were involved in the construction of the float which took around 100 man hours to complete.

The apprentices and trainees were very community-focussed throughout the year participating in community events such as the Former Origin Great’s (FOGS) Indigenous employment expo, NAIDOC week, and the Xstrata Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic. Their skills and team spirit were demonstrated at the Fishing Classic when they wowed the crowds with their man made dragon boat entry.

Zinc’s IronmanPaul Wain, Apprentice Fitter at our Zinc Lead Concentrator, was one of over 1,300 professional and age group athletes that lined up to compete in the epic SunSmart Ironman in Western Australia on 4 December, 2011.

The race, held in Busselton, a town located approximately 220 kilometres south of Perth, consisted of a 3.8 kilometre swim, a 180 kilometre bike ride and a 42.2 kilometre marathon run.

To successfully complete a long distance triathlon most people follow a 36 week training program in the lead up to the event, however, Paul managed to finish the race with only eight weeks of training under his belt, an amazing feat considering his 48 hour working weeks.

Although Paul was held up for around two hours due to flat bicycle tyres he was still able to complete the race within the 17 hour time limit.

Paul said the long distance triathlon was something he always wanted to mark off his bucket list.

“This was the first Ironman triathlon I have competed in and although it hurt a lot it was a fantastic experience and definitely something I want to do again,” Paul said.

“I am going to enter the Port Macquarie Ironman which runs in March 2013, and I’m also considering taking part in the Cairns half Ironman in June this year.

“Although I am not a really serious trainer, events closer to home such as the Julia Creek Triathlon and the local Lake Moondarra Triathlon help me prepare for long distance events.”

No stranger to tough exercise, Paul has participated in triathlons most of his life and has also competed in Rugby Union, Surfing, Water Polo and Surf Lifesaving professionally.

Paul said he would recommend triathlons to anyone who wants to get fit while also having fun.

“The local Isa Rats Running and Triathlon Club is a fantastic initiative and I would recommend that people get involved,” he said.

“It’s a great way to increase fitness and is also very social.”

The program called ‘Painting a Difference’ will provide at-risk Indigenous youth with traditional art skills and a structured activity to participate in during the school holidays and then weekly until June 2012.

Local Kalkadoon traditional artist Barbara Sam has been commissioned as the artist-in-residence for the program while other Indigenous elders will be invited to participate in the program as it progresses.

The five month program will culminate in an exhibition of Barbara’s paintings and the artwork produced by the youth, which will coincide with NAIDOC week in early July, 2012.

Xstrata’s funding of $5,000 will help fund the program and assist the PCYC to purchase art supplies and cover the costs associated with running the exhibition.

Simon Tayler – PCYC Acting Sergeant in charge, said he was excited about the opportunity to partner with Xstrata on this sponsorship to provide the Painting a Difference program for Mount Isa’s Indigenous youth.

“Painting a Difference is a targeted program offering at-risk Indigenous juveniles an outlet to express their culture through art under the guidance of Barbara, and Xstrata Mount Isa Mines has played a major role in making this a reality,” Simon said.

“ Come NAIDOC week my hope is that everyone will see the benefits of having local Kalkadoon elder Barbara Sam working with these kids to express themselves through positive creativity.”

Melanie Edgar – Xstrata Copper’s Manager Corporate Affairs and Community Relations, said she hoped the program would help to

instil a sense of pride into at-risk youth by providing them with a skill they possibly would not have obtained elsewhere.

“We’re pleased to be able to build on our already strong relationship with the Mount Isa PCYC and deliver a program that provides the structure needed to help engage at-risk youth,“ Melanie said.

“The Painting a Difference program will provide identified at-risk youth with an opportunity to work creatively with community elders, proudly display their best artworks at an exhibition to be held during the 2012 NAIDOC Week celebrations, and most importantly will hopefully see them reconnect to culture and storytelling through the practice of art.”

The program commenced Friday 6 January and will be run from 9.00am–11.00am every Friday until late June, and will be held at the PCYC.

New partners announced for

Xstrata Community Program North QueenslandXstrata recently announced a commitment of $3.25 million to our successful community partnership program that is improving services and facilities in the north Queensland communities of Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Townsville and Bowen.

COMMUNITY

These additional funds will support four partnerships and one major social infrastructure projects from 2012 to 2015 and will bring the combined value of the

Xstrata Community Program North Queensland (XCPNQ) to over $25 million over eleven years (2005–2015).

Steve de Kruijff – Xstrata Copper North Queensland Chief Operating Officer, said the program’s achievements to date reinforced our belief that local communities should benefit from our operations both in the short and long term.

“Since 2005 the XCPNQ has made a huge contribution to north Queensland such as improving teaching technology in local schools,

helping to train medical staff and improve medical services, and helping disadvantaged people gain skills and jobs,” he said.

“I look forward to continuing to share the benefits of our business performance with our employees, communities and our partner organisations through this program.”

The new partners to the program are:

SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE: » Cloncurry Community Precinct: Previously

supported as a social infrastructure project to the value of $750,000, we will provide an additional $2 million to enable completion of Stage 1 of the Community Precinct which will house an art gallery, library, community meeting room, function rooms and open space for community use.

NEW COMMUNITY PARTNERS: » Mount Isa Concert Band and String

Orchestra: Xstrata’s funding will enable purchase of musical instruments and associated equipment to ensure that music students of Mount Isa, Cloncurry and School of the Air have access to equipment of a similar standard to those in coastal areas.

» Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group: A hatchery to grow out fingerlings to support fish stocks within Mount Isa and other areas will be able to be constructed with the assistance of our funding.

The hatchery will provide numerous benefits to the Mount Isa community including an additional tourism venture, investment in industry diversification for the community (aquaculture), and strong linkages with our existing partners (Southern Gulf Catchments) and local schools.

» North Queensland Helicopter Rescue Service: We are proud to partner with the NQ Helicopter Rescue Service to make the helicopter rescue service a viable service for Mount Isa and surrounding North West communities. As well as providing emergency retrieval capability, the service works closely with the RFDS and Queensland Health to strengthen health delivery to our region.

» Cloncurry Cycle Pathways: Cyclists, pedestrians and young mothers will benefit by the construction of new cycle pathways providing a safe exercise option in Cloncurry. Our funding to enable this project will make a positive difference to the community and encourage people to exercise in a safe environment.

We are pleased to welcome these partners to the Xstrata Community Program North Queensland and will keep you informed of their progress through regular updates in Mine to Market.

During 2008, a refurbishment project was undertaken to restore the old St Joseph’s School buildings and in January 2009 we re-opened it as the St Joseph’s Training Centre.

Adam Purkis – Acting General Manager Engineering Services and Projects, said the church is being returned to pristine condition by our employees and contractors, with the gardens being landscaped by our Indigenous Trainees.

“The renovations involve replacing the roof tiles and trusses, installing a new ceiling, new lighting, windows, air conditioning and a kitchenette, installing an internal sound system and painting,” Adam said.

“Once restored the church will be used as a meeting hall and auditorium for many of our internal and external meetings, such as our Community Information Sessions, and will compliment the already

well utilised St Joseph’s Training Centre.”A distinctive feature of the Church is the

huge winder wheel housed inside the church which is believed to have been a part of one of the original winders used on site.

Originally opened in May 1957, the church was purpose built to replace an old iron building which had been used as the Saint Joseph’s church and school from the 1930s onwards.

In 1985, the church and school were sold to Mount Isa Mines Ltd (MIM) and in 1988 the church was converted into the John Midlin Mining Display and Visitor’s Centre until it closed in 1992. John Midlin, General Manager MIM at the time and the MIM board converted the church into a museum as a bicentennial project.  Many of the specimens from the John Midlin Visitor’s Centre are now housed at Outback at Isa.

In its heyday the church was considered one of Mount Isa’s finest buildings.

After more than 50 years as a historic Mount Isa landmark, Xstrata Mount Isa Mines is restoring the old St Joseph’s church, on Church Street, to its former glory. Upon completion in February, the church will be re-opened as a state-of-the-art auditorium.

St Kieran’s thanks Xstrata for new computer laboratory

Students at St Kieran’s Primary School in Mount Isa are excited about the 2012 new school year with thanks to Xstrata’s donation of $10,000 towards their new computer laboratory.

The computer laboratory was built in 2011 with funding from the Building the Education Revolution, while 30 laptops and IT equipment were purchased through Xstrata’s sponsorships and donations funding as well as fundraising from the school P & F committee.

The computer laboratory is used by students from Prep through to Grade 7 for a wide range of educational classes.

Jacqui Gardner – Assistant to the Principal, Religious Education and 2011 Grade 2 Teacher at St Kieran’s Primary School said the entire school was very grateful for the generosity of Xstrata and their donation to help purchase the laptops.

“Had the funding not come from Xstrata, the school P & F committee would have had to fundraise to obtain the required amount, which could have taken up to 12 months for a small school like us to raise,” Jacqui said.

“ Computers are an essential part of modern schooling and St Kieran’s school students are enjoying using the laptops on a daily basis,” Jacqui said.

Father Mick said the gifts benefited many families in the Mount Isa community including the Yallambee community and families who participate in the Murri Court Men’s and Women’s Groups.

“Christmas is a time of giving, sharing and celebration but some families do struggle at Christmas time. With Xstrata’s support we were able to provide gifts to children who wouldn’t usually receive too much on Christmas Day,” Father Mick said.

“Seeing the children’s excitement when they received a gift really highlighted

how companies can lend a hand over the Christmas period and be a genuine part of the community.”

Mike Westerman – General Manager Mount Isa Copper Operations said he was pleased that we were able to give back to the community during the festive season.

“ This was the second year we’ve donated children’s showbags to the community and it’s fantastic to know that the initiative helped Father Mick ensure that many children received a gift this Christmas in Mount Isa,” he said.

Isa local returns to her rootsAfter heading to Brisbane to complete her university studies, born and bred local girl Kimberly Boscarin has returned to her Mount Isa roots and is ready to use her newly acquired skills in a Graduate position at our Zinc operations.

Kimberly is no stranger to Mount Isa Mines, having first worked here in 2009 as an Administration Vacation Program student and then

returning in 2010 to take up roles including full-time Administration Assistant and Human Resources Officer.

Having studied a dual degree in Business and Communications at Queensland University of Technology, completed a Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Manager ment at Deakin University and undertaken extensive experience here at Mount Isa Mines, Kimberly was an obvious choice for the 2012 Graduate Program.

Kimberly is not the first member of her family to have Xstrata connections with her father Peter Boscarin working in our operations for over 40 years as a Raiseborer Operator.

Kimberly said her father’s career influenced her decision to take up a permanent position in our workforce.

“My dad’s long term employment with the company really highlighted to me that Xstrata would be a great company to work for and I am really looking forward to beginning my

graduate role in early January,” Kimberly said. “Returning to Mount Isa after completing

my studies was an easy decision to make as I was coming back home to my friends and family.

“The career opportunities available in Mount Isa and working with Zinc’s Human Resources team also made the choice to come home a simple one.”

Fiona Pascoe, Senior Human Resources Advisor, Xstrata Zinc said it was a natural progression for Kimberly to move into the Human Resources Graduate role.

“Kimberly demonstrated her capability whilst working as a Vacation Student and in her role as Human Resources Officer,” Fiona said.

“Kimberly’s employment is a testament to the Vacation Program and illustrates the valuable work experience that can be gained through Xstrata Zinc.”

Short-beaked Echidnas, Copper and Ouch Ouch were named following a competition open to the children and grandchildren of our employees.

Competition winners – brothers Oscar Comerford and Felix Early – who named Copper and Teliah Knight who named Ouch Ouch were treated to a personal up close encounter with the Echidnas during a day at the Sanctuary. Billabong Sanctuary General Manager Brett Fleming said in 2011 the sanctuary embarked on a sponsorship program seeking support from local business to assist in rebuilding of the Sanctuary. “We are rebuilding cyclone tough,” Brett said.

“Visitors will have a much better chance to get close to these mammals as the enclosure features a large glass viewing area in their new stylish corrugated iron home.”

Copper has been a resident of the sanctuary for a couple of years; Ouch Ouch came to the facility following rehabilitation by a wildlife carer after being hit by a car.

Mark Roberts – General Manager Xstrata Copper Townsville Operations, said it was great to see the Sanctuary’s rebuilding program is progressing well following the devastation of Cyclone Yasi.

“We are pleased to provide funding for the new Echidna enclosure in order to support the role the Sanctuary plays in wildlife conservation through their breeding and educational programs. The new enclosure also supports the Sanctuary’s efforts in showcasing our native wildlife to the world,” Mark said.

This follows legislation introduced to the Queensland Parliament in 2008 to transition our governing environmental regulations from the Mount Isa Mines

Limited Agreement Act 1985 (MIMLAA) to the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (Qld).

We are proud to be already meeting the environmental objectives for noise and vibration, waste and land, and have plans in place to achieve compliance against all air and water objectives within five years.

We have consistently met our obligations as part of this environmental transition process, including the submission of our Environmental Management Plan in May 2011 to the State Government.

Steve de Kruijff – Xstrata Copper North Queensland Chief Operating Officer, said the Environmental Authority sets out the conditions that we must meet in order to comply with contemporary standards.

“We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and are committed to complying

with all environmental objectives set out in the Environmental Authority,” Steve said.

“This marks an important milestone for our operations in continually improving our environmental performance and commitment to sustainable practices.

“We are planning to invest about $360 million over the next five years to achieve full compliance with the new environmental objectives and continue to uphold Xstrata’s reputation as a world leader in sustainable commodity production.”

“ We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and are committed to complying with all environmental objectives ...“

EHM improve stormwater management

Ernest Henry Mining has installed new automatic sampling equipment to improve stormwater management.

All stormwater runoff is directed to either the north or south sumps via a series of drains onsite. Stormwater is stored in these sumps and is then pumped back into site evaporation dams where it’s contained.

During extreme rainfall events when stormwater inflow is greater than our pumping capacity we’re permitted to discharge stormwater offsite. In the rare event that stormwater is released offsite the automatic samplers, which are located at both sumps’ overflow points, will monitor the quality and quantity of stormwater that is released.

Patrick Windsor – Environmental Superintendent, said in the event of stormwater release these automatic samplers will constantly analyse the pH, EC and other data levels so that we can instantly determine the quality and quantity of stormwater being released from site.

“The real-time data obtained from this equipment gives us greater understanding and control of stormwater going offsite. This, combined with other stormwater controls helps us to thoroughly manage stormwater runoff,” Patrick said.

In the event of stormwater release automatic sampling equipment allows Ernest Henry Mining to collect instant data on stormwater quality and quantity.

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines Receives New Environmental AuthorityOn 16 December 2011, the Department of Environment and Resource Management granted our Mount Isa copper and zinc-lead operations a new Environmental Authority.

During 2011 the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program’s Allied Health Gym was relocated to a new, temporary location

treating patients at Unit 56 at our Parkside accommodation complex on Railway Avenue.

The program sees 100 patients each year and through its dedicated service continually sees positive health outcomes during each eight week program.

The service provides inpatient education with an outpatient exercise and education component.

It is aimed at people who have had a cardiac event such as a heart attack or heart surgery or have risk factors for heart disease. It is an outpatient education and exercise program delivered by a multidisciplinary team and aims to increase knowledge of heart disease and ways to manage it.

Natalie Thomas – Allied Health’s Clinical Nurse for Cardiac Rehabilitation said the partnership between the mine and Allied Health has been providing successful outcomes for the patients.

“ We’re grateful to Xstrata Mount Isa Mines for their assistance, which has allowed us to keep the program running while the hospital undergoes redevelopment,” Natalie said.

Nathan Pike – Xstrata Copper’s General Manager for Sustainable Development, said he was pleased to be able to assist in keeping such a vital service operational during the redevelopment of the Mount Isa Hospital.

“With some innovative thinking the Allied Health Gym was able to be relocated to our Parkside accommodation complex and the service has been able to continue virtually uninterrupted during the hospital redevelopment,“ Nathan said.

The refurbished Allied Health Department was completed in December, 2011.

Each year at Christmas time, The Smith Family provides food and gift hampers to needy children and families across Australia, so that they too can share in the Christmas tradition.

In December 2011, a team of 20 from Xstrata Copper and Xstrata Zinc joined Charlie Sartain – Chief Executive Xstrata Copper to participate in The Smith Family Christmas Hamper and Toy Pack Night, which was held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre in Brisbane.

Thanks to our volunteering efforts, we assisted the Smith Family in distributing more than 14,500 toy and book packs and 8,000 food hampers to 8,500 disadvantage children and families around the country.

A number of employees also volunteered their time for the hamper delivery day, where volunteers travel to families to deliver food and gift packs.

This process is only made possible thanks to the generosity of individuals, families, and corporate and community supporters and volunteers.

The Smith Family is also valued partner of the Xstrata Community Program Queensland (XCPQ). We are one of their largest financial supporters in Queensland and our partnership is supporting the development of digital literacy among 240 students across the state, so that they may gain competency in operating a personal computer, conducting online research, preparing a resume and job applications, and using email.

Xstrata donation makes for healthy heartsThrough the assistance of Xstrata Mount Isa Mines, the Allied Health Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program has been able to continue to deliver its vital service while the Mount Isa Hospital undergoes redevelopment.

The project incorporates the development of five small open pit mines, including three at the E1 tenement (known as E1 North,

E1 South and E1 East) and two at the Monakoff tenement (known as Monakoff and Monakoff East).

Overall size and shape has been determined for all five open pit mines and more detailed mine designs are currently being developed to include details such as the benches, berms and ramps. Mine scheduling works are also underway to determine the order in which each pit will be developed.

The pit depths will range from approximately 60 metres to 210 metres and their widths will range from approximately 325 metres to 525 metres.

Subject to final government approvals, production is expected to commence from the project in the second half of 2012, with ore mined from the project being transported to our operations where it will be processed through the existing concentrator.

Meanwhile the Mining Lease associated with the E1 deposits was granted in early December 2011. John Twomey, Project Director, said the granting of this mining lease

In January, Xstrata Zinc welcomed 10 skilled workers who had travelled more than 15,900 kilometres from Spain in order to call Mount Isa their new home.

to explore every opportunity available to make sure we recruit the best people for our business,” he said.

With $1.1 billion in projects under development or in planning phase, we remain focussed on a competitive recruitment strategy, according to Brian.

Our international recruitment efforts follow an Australian Government National Resources Sector Employment Taskforce report in 2010 which highlighted the need for an additional 61,500 new jobs in mining by 2015.

“Skills shortages represent our biggest challenge as we invest and grow in Mount Isa,” Brian said.

The new employees were recruited with the support of our Zinc head office in Madrid. They have all undergone candidate assessments based on both Xstrata requirements and the necessary working visa prerequisites, including competency in the English language.

OUR PEOPLE

Overseas recruits arrive in Mount Isa

The town’s newest residents will be working at our Zinc operations in positions including Diesel Fitters, Auto Electricians, Fitters and Boilermakers.

Brian Hearne – Xstrata Zinc Australia Chief Operating Officer said he was proud to contribute to the diversity and growth of Mount Isa.

“Specialist skills can be hard to find and following a lack of local and national candidates for the available positions we extended the opportunity to Spanish residents who are struggling with a 21 per cent unemployment rate. We received more than 3,000 applications,” Brian said.

Mr Hearne said he remained committed to local and national recruitment, however, the current Australian skills shortage had led to exploration of international employment opportunities.

“Employing local and national workers remains a priority for us however we need

is an important milestone for the project and will enable infrastructure works to commence in the near future.

“In-fill drilling has also commenced to provide additional information on the resource and this will continue, where possible during the wet season, throughout the first quarter of 2012,” John said.

Sponsored by the Xstrata Community Program North Queensland (XCPNQ) the Sport for Life workshops offer children in Mount Isa a range of fun

sporting activities while developing essential life skills such as goal setting, leadership and communication.

The workshops emphasise the importance of healthy living and are facilitated by role models, recruited and trained by Stride with the support of the Queensland Academy of Sport.

Eleanor Sharp – Stride Foundation program manager said the primary school based workshops are complemented by a mentoring program at the Edmund Rice Flexible Learning Centre.

“The young people and their mentors take part in regular sporting activities, giving mentors the chance to offer guidance and support to the young people, while encouraging increased physical activity, connection to the local community and engagement at school,” Eleanor said.

“We’re very grateful to Xstrata for this partnership, which is an important partnership for the Stride Foundation.”

“I would like to thank the team from the Xstrata Community Program for their invaluable support of the program so far, and their belief in our vision for the young people of Mount Isa. We would not be able to deliver a program of this size and impact without the support of Xstrata.”

“The new partnership with XCPNQ sees the continuation of Sport for Life in Mount Isa to 2013, enabling more young people to participate in the program. Through the generous support of Xstrata, Stride can encourage more young people to become active in sport and recreation and at the same time inspire children and young people to set goals, stay actively engaged in their education, become leaders in the community and ultimately give our young people the opportunity for a brighter future.”

Stride Foundation is a not for profit organisation that works with young people across Australia to improve their physical, mental and social wellbeing. Stride works closely with other community organisations, council offices and schools to deliver programs into some of the most challenged regional, rural and remote regions of Australia.

Our business forms one of the largest underground mining operations in the world, includes two separate mining and processing streams and is a major contributor to the Queensland economy.

Importantly, our operations provide one of the best training grounds for young professionals like Simon Worland, who spent over five years in our Xstrata Copper North Queensland Safety and Health Department.

His professional journey started as a Deakin University graduate in 2005, but it wasn’t long before Simon was managing a team of three as the Senior Occupation Hygienist and looking after hygiene programs across our north Queensland operations.

His responsibilities included design of occupational hygiene monitoring programs, supporting health surveillance programs and providing training to our people about health and hygiene hazards and how we can protect ourselves from harm in the workplace.

Recently, Simon’s passion for science led him to win the Young Hygienist of the Year award at the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) 2011 conference in December last year for making a significant contribution to the field of occupational hygiene.

The award recognises Simon’s leadership as a hygienist within our business and is a significant milestone in his career.

The highly coveted award will provide Simon with significant professional development opportunities, allowing him to attend the 2012 British Occupational Hygiene Society Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland. His prize also includes a visit to the Dräger headquarters in Leubeck, Germany.

Simon left Xstrata in October 2011 to join BMA in Brisbane. We’d like to take this opportunity to wish Simon all the best in his new role and hope his journey inspires other professionals within our business to achieve great success.

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines:

One of Australia’s best training grounds for young professionalsIt’s a well known fact that Xstrata Mount Isa Mines represents one of Australia’s most unique operations with complex mining and processing facilities spanning 87 years and employing around 4,500 employees and contractors.

Provide a healthy breakfast

A child who does not eat breakfast may absorb 7 times more lead than a child does.

Avoid high fat foods as they increase the absorption of lead.

Eat plenty of red meat and dairy products, fruits and vegetables.

Feed children healthy meals and snacks regularly during the day - lead is more easily absorbed on an empty stomach.

Boiling does not reduce lead absorption.

29JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012 MINE TO MARKET

Smoking cessation is always the ‘in’ New Year Resolution for many people. So if this lifestyle change has crossed your mind, here are some handy hints to assist you with your New Year endeavours.

You know you’ll feel better for quitting. Your immune system, lungs and heart will thank you for it. The hardest part is breaking

the habit! Think of ways to deal with those cravings.

Here are a few ideas from Quitline: » Write down why you are quitting, and keep

this close to you » Try to spend more time with non smoking

friends in the first couple of weeks to make the transition easier

» Clear your house and car of all cigarettes, ash trays and lighters

» Stay hydrated! Drink water when you are craving a cigarette

» Brush your teeth after eating, you’re less likely to want to smoke (or eat dessert!)

» Keep your hands and mouth busy – chew gum, play with your phone etc.

Did you know?Your body retains more caffeine if you are smoke free – so people who report ‘the jitters’ while they are quitting smoking are actually suffering from caffeine overload. Try a few decafs throughout the day to avoid this!

It’s time to quit smoking
