messageFROM THE CHAIR

The fall always marks a season of change for the Chamber.

This year the Annual General Meeting, usually held in October or November, will mark the end of my role as the Chair of the Board and we will be welcoming new and returning board members as well as a new chair.

As Chair of the Board, I’ve had the opportunity to be involved with important changes and valuable initiatives. It’s been a great pleasure to work with the dedicated volunteers on committees and the board as together we pursued the mission of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with the Chamber staff and I want to especially thank Judy Marshall, CEO for her leadership. Together, over the past year, the board, volunteers, leaders and staff have weathered some challenges and celebrated milestones. Here are my favourite highlights.

Last winter the board sought input from members for our Whiteboard Project. I had the pleasure of working with an excellent group of members to create the framework that will ensure the Aurora Chamber’s health and growth for years to come. This process impressed upon me the rich and diverse knowledge and expertise we have to draw on. We are very fortunate.

The 2015 Chamber Home Show made the move to the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex. Judy Marshall and the Board’s Past Chair, Paul Smith made multiple presentations to the Town Council to ensure that the Chamber Home Show would continue to provide businesses with opportunities and exposure. Volunteering at the event was a great experience as I had the opportunity to witness how the incredible Home Show Committee and Chamber staff

worked together to retool this popular and important event.

Often I have had the opportunity to socialize, network and get to know members better. Despite a downpour, there was no dampening members’ spirits at the Chamber Golf Classic this past June. Even if my foursome was drenched and needed all the leveling of the playing field we could get, we had an absolutely fantastic time.

Moving forward, the solid foundation built by a legacy of volunteers and staff allows us to celebrate achievements and tackle challenges. Chambers across North America are in the midst of redefining themselves to meet the new and emerging needs of their memberships. The Aurora Chamber and the local business community are changing too and we are exploring new opportunities to respond.

Finally, I want to convey my best wishes to the incoming board and Chair as well as thank those that have volunteered their time serving this year. Volunteering can be time consuming but also extremely rewarding. I have valued the opportunities we have had to network, foster life-long friendships and share some fun and laughter along the journey. My sincere thanks to those who are leaving the board this fall. I have enjoyed working with each and every one of you.

All the best for the holidays.

Patty Poulin-UlbrichtChair of the Board

messageFROM THE CEO

Over the summer, the staff at the Aurora Chamber

of Commerce were busy planning events in response to your requests for educational opportunities as well as events that will give you time to network with other members, board and staff and just to have fun! Check the Chamber’s website (www.aurorachamber.on.ca) for the fall and winter calendar of events to see the results of that planning. The calendar is absolutely packed with activities.

We continue to provide events that have been successful in the past while considering your suggestions on how they might be improved. Pub nights are well attended and members enjoy the casual surroundings and the excellent networking opportunity. Some members indicated that they don’t attend because they do not drink alcohol or do not want to drink and then drive home. Join us as the majority of people who attend enjoy water, juice or a soft drink and the excellent selection of appetizers and, sometimes, desserts. Maybe we need a different name for the event. Any ideas?

The Aurora Chamber Tech Expo – our most recent response to members’ educational needs – was initially intended to be a business and technology conference with high level speakers, a large exhibitor area and ongoing educational sessions. However, with this event we aim to meet the needs of the smaller business owner who may have IT questions and does not know what to ask or who to call. We have reached the conclusion that a more casual, intimate expo format is the most appropriate forum for small business to ask questions and get answers from presenters and members who provide those business solutions every day. For me, it is an opportunity to ask my most

nagging questions such as: “I don’t understand this” and “Why doesn’t it work when I do this?” More details about this event being held in early 2016 will be coming soon.

At the Chamber’s Annual General Meeting, held every fall after the June 30th year end, some board members complete their volunteer terms and we welcome new people to take their place. I would like to thank all those leaving this fall for their time, dedication and guidance. We appreciate your commitment to the mission of the organization and your role in ensuring we constantly move forward. To the Chamber staff and committee volunteers – your dedication is quite incredible – thank you.

The upcoming Chamber’s Business Directory is now called the Buyer’s Guide. This publication is another avenue for us to support members by encouraging local consumers to shop local and make their purchases from Chamber

businesses. The 2016 publication will be circulated in November to coincide with the holiday shopping season and campaigns that promote the shop local message. We are distributing approximately 12,000 copies in select neighbourhoods. You can also pick up a copy on racks located throughout the community. Please encourage friends and relatives to grab their copy to support Chamber members and to choose products and services locally. Thank you to all those who updated their profiles to ensure the Guide is as accurate as possible as well as those who were able to support it through advertising.

We continue to evaluate and improve the value of your membership with the Chamber. In the process of preparing a new strategic operational plan, I have been reading about membership in associations and non-profit organizations not unlike the Aurora Chamber. Value means something different to everyone. My reading suggests that value is

loosely defined as the perception that you have been given something that makes your life better.

In an organization like the Chamber where many of the services are intangible, it is becoming extremely difficult to prove this definition of value. We are committed to listening to members so we can learn more about what value means to you and ultimately better serve your needs. Want to share what you value? My door is always open. I look forward to speaking with you.

‘til next time, Judy MarshallCEO

P.S.For those interested in further educational opportunities, The Newmarket Chamber of Commerce is holding an excellent business conference. Be sure to check their website for more information about the Business Thrives Conference and Expo being held Tuesday, November 24.

The Aurora Chamber of Commerce will be holding the first Tech Expo in 2016. This annual forum will be an opportunity for small business to interact

one-on-one with local IT professionals and suppliers. The goal is to help local business find answers to related questions, concerns and dilemmas.

Watch for this signature event in 2016.

Helping Aurora Small Business Find IT SolutionsA 2014 study by Brother International Corporation and SCORE, a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small business get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals, revealed that 64 per cent of small business owners were “overwhelmed” by technology. Most had no dedicated IT support and felt there were very few resources available to help them make smart choices for their business.

When Renders and Partners LLP, a Chartered Professional Accounting firm in Aurora needed to update their software, they recognized the challenges that came with working with multiple suppliers and trying to determine what worked best for their firm.

“We had to find out what developments had been made in the IT field and what software could be tailored to our needs at a reasonable cost. Staying ahead of new products and finding the appropriate IT solution is time-consuming,” says Howard Render. “We provide excellent services within our area of expertise, but when purchasing new platforms and software, we needed a professional who was aware of the IT environment and could offer effective solutions.”

Renders and Partners LLP is not alone. Many small to medium sized businesses (SMB) agree that it can be overwhelming navigating emerging IT solutions.

The stress that many SMBs associate with staying informed of the newest technologies is hardly surprising when you consider the rate of change. For example, consider how often software patches such as security enhancements and bug fixes (like those for Microsoft and Windows) are introduced. There are also updates to mobile operating systems and devices, and major version releases of large software packages such as Office, and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software. Most SMBs simply do not have the time to keep current on the latest technologies. They do, however, recognize that adopting the right tool is essential to giving them a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Waiting too long to adopt the right tool means risking the possibility that a larger competitor will use the same technology to provide better, faster service. The more time an SMB spends assessing their options and the correct adoption point, the less time they are spending on the core, revenue generating functions of their business.

For these reasons many local businesses find the best strategy is to partner with an outside company that can assess their needs and offer relevant and

timely IT solutions. Renders and Partners and other local businesses choose to employ Aurora-based, The Tech Zone.

A member of the Aurora Chamber, Newmarket-based York Vein and Laser Clinic uses complex software to bill OHIP and patients and keep their patient records confidential. The medical clinic has unique needs and IT solutions must be tailored to their specific purpose.

“It was important that we consult with experts in the field,” says York Vein and Laser’s owner Dr. Philip Kritzinger. “I was impressed that The Tech Zone understood the particular requirements of our business before they made recommendations. They really personalized their approach.”

Roman Kantar, owner of The Tech Zone understands the stress that comes with having to make critical decisions without an IT expert. “Large enterprise has Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and other senior staff,” he says.

“When you are a small business owner you are everything rolled into one. There are so many decisions that require a special set of expertise that often the most cost-effective solution is working with a partner like us.”

In the past, small business needed to make a considerable capital investment to develop the IT infrastructure necessary to run their business. Cloud computing, which essentially means taking a company’s IT infrastructure off premises to be managed by a third party, frees a business owner’s time to focus on what they do best. Software licenses, email, data storage, security and back up can all be managed from outside the business. Most of these solutions are offered on a cost per user basis, making IT tools more financially feasible.

Kantar believes that despite feeling overwhelmed, small business should recognize the opportunities newer technologies offer them. “Mobile devices, CRMs, data analytics and cloud computing enable small businesses to compete like never before”, says Kantar. “The great news is that the constant connectivity of mobile devices and the scalability offered by cloud computing has virtually levelled the playing field for small business owners.”

For mobile businesses, the cloud offers even more advantages. With customer records, billing, marketing and accounting accessed from the cloud, small business owners can work anywhere.

Kantar does caution clients that think the cloud offers a band aid solution. It may be the latest trend in IT, but as Roman’s partnership with York Vein and Laser demonstrates, it’s not the right solution for every business.

The Tech Zone team took a look at the unique needs and functions of the clinic. Complying with government privacy regulations prevented a complete data transfer to the cloud. Medical records needed to be stored on the premises. If the cloud was not the right solution for this client, Kantar and certified technicians would work to find and deliver the best alternative. “Many of our clients use a hybrid mix of on-premise data storage and cloud solutions,” says Kantar.

Technicians can build a network that considers the function of your website, the degree to which you use your land line, mobile phone or any point of sale device. If your business relies heavily on the internet it is often important to consider a redundant ISP, or a back up internet service provider like Bell or Rogers so that your business does not suffer when internet access is less than optimal.

“Sitting down with a

client to assess their needs is a bit like a visit to the doctor,” says Kantar. “Each

business is as unique as each individual. The same IT tools don’t work for everyone.”

The medical clinic is looking to move to new facilities in Aurora in 2016. Something as simple as moving computers can quickly become challenging and using an IT partner to help with the transition will minimize the clinic’s interruptions and keep staff focused on business.

“There are a lot of questions even the smallest business owner should ask their IT solutions partner,” says Kantar.

Being available to provide information is one of the reasons Kantar chose to get involved when he learned the Aurora Chamber of Commerce’s was hosting a Tech Expo to help Aurora businesses meet their IT needs.

This new Chamber event, planned for 2016, is being designed to help local small businesses seek solutions. Knowing that for many small business owners IT can be overwhelming and

sometimes even intimidating, event organizers hope to give attendees the opportunity to talk one-on-one with IT professionals in a casual atmosphere. The intent is to allow business owners the opportunity to ask their most nagging questions, experience a variety of technologies at hands-on exhibits and attend break-out sessions that will give them a chance to interact with speakers.

“More than half of the Aurora Chamber members identify themselves as small business owners,” says CEO Judy Marshall, “so we are really excited about this opportunity to meet the needs of so many members. The event promises to be a great way to engage small business in Aurora.”

Aurora to explore hotel development optionsThe Town of Aurora is a fast growing community, just north of Toronto. With a strong focus on commercial development, a highly diverse economy and a robust business sector, Aurora is an attractive market for new development.

Over the past few years, the Town has been active in exploring hotel opportunities with land owners and budding investors. The Town is committed to facilitating growth in Aurora and developing plans to attract businesses that provide employment opportunities for our residents. Town staff has coordinated discussions between interested hotel operators and local businesses to assist in plans for potential hotel development.

There have been at least three recent inquiries from investors regarding construction of a hotel in Aurora.

The Town of Aurora has also been diligently working with hotel chains regarding future development. Town discussions have occurred with at least six major hotel chains in Ontario. Several hotel chains have completed market assessments for investors, which have historically suggested that the market for a hotel in Aurora is feasible. The most common area zoned for hotel development is the prominent Business Park along Highway 404. The area includes a spot on Don Hillock Drive that has an approved site plan in place to permit a hotel and several other sites that are being considered for hotel uses.

Our relationships and consultations with hotel chains and investors allow us to better understand the opportunities and barriers to the construction of a hotel in Aurora. The Town has been actively promoting opportunities and proactively analyzing and addressing obstacles to fulfill the community need for a local hotel. For example, the development charge for a hotel has been identified as a significant barrier to construction by potential hotel investors. In response, the Town completed a competitive analysis of hotel development charges in the Greater Toronto Area and is considering changes to both the Town’s and Region’s hotel development charge to make the fee more cost effective in this competitive market.

The Town has also promoted the recently launched Business Concierge Program to hotel investors to help streamline municipal approvals. The program offers investors a dedicated contact at Town Hall, priority approvals and assistance with the municipal approvals process.

The temptation of reverse delegation

Nobody wins when managers take back the work

they’ve doled out

We’ve all seen situations where managers delegate a task to an employee and then end up doing the work themselves, either because they take the assignment back or allow the employee to give it back. This phenomenon is called reverse delegation. When this occurs, organizations make less-than-optimum use of their human resources.

Bosses who delegate work and then take assignments back from their staff are like parents who say to their kids, “Here, I’ll do it for you” or “Forget it, I can do it faster myself”. In a work environment, this leads to two negative learning outcomes: 1) the employee doesn’t learn how to handle the task independently and 2) the employee learns that the boss doesn’t trust her to do a good job.

When you reverse delegate work, employees learn that you’ll always be there when they choose not to make an effort. Short-term, you get the job done, but long-term you’re not doing employees any favours. You’re allowing them to shed responsibility and shift it back to you. You’re signalling it’s OK for them to give up and take the easy way out. Meanwhile, they continue accepting their pay cheques.

An example from my own practice: I witnessed a situation where a Vice President came to see the President of a company. The Vice President had been put in charge of organizing the annual shareholders’ meeting. He interrupted a conversation between the President and a senior manager to ask what kind of cheese the President wanted to have for the buffet. Instead of saying ‘You figure it out’, the President actually pondered the question and made the choice.

There are managers who say they want to delegate (after hearing about the benefits at a conference), give their staff assignments and then insist on approving every step in the process or question every decision. I once had a client who authorized HR to approve employees’ vacation requests, as she didn’t want to be bothered with that micro-level. That sounded great but guess what happened? The client challenged every single approval, because it was ‘crazy busy’ that day or that week and the company really needed all hands on deck. So that was the end of that.

My grandfather once spoke of a car repair shop that went out of business because the owner knew

everything best and wouldn’t let people do their jobs. He spent most of his time lying under cars and doing the repairs, while the three mechanics he hired stood around and watched him work.

The best bosses I’ve worked for gave me a task, told me which results they were looking for and then left it to me to figure out how to get there. They were available as a sounding board if needed, but they didn’t step in or interfere. They made it my responsibility by not letting me off the hook. At the same time, the implicit message was that they had faith in my ability to deliver. Consequently, I gained new skills through trial and error.

As Rush Limbaugh said in his radio show on October 8, 2010: “Most people, if you ask them as adults who was the best teacher they ever had, will tell you almost without fail that it was somebody in their life who showed them they were capable of much more than they thought they were capable of”.

When executives get sucked into reverse delegation, they end up being swamped with trivia instead of plotting company strategy for the next five years. Making decisions in trivial matters is not what the Board of Directors pays them for. Organizations have a hierarchy for a reason. The idea is that decision-making and execution are delegated to the lowest possible level, so that people at higher levels can focus on bigger issues. As Dr. Phil writes in Life Code: “Delegate to people who may not see the big managerial picture, but have enough knowledge of the parts and pieces necessary to succeed”.

Some people actually like not letting go – they love being needed for even the most mundane matters. They can never be away from work and think the organization would

Creating your charitable legacy

Feature / by Sunil Heda, CPA

When it comes to charitable giving, you have a number of different options that can help you achieve your philanthropic goals, while at the same time providing you with some tax relief.Donating securitiesThe federal government introduced several tax incentives in recent years to encourage charitable giving by Canadians, including the elimination of capital gains tax when you donate publicly listed securities to qualified charities. Not only do you receive a tax break, you also receive a donation receipt equal to the fair market value of the donated security.

For example, due to the donation tax credit, your out-of-pocket cost for making an in-kind donation of a security worth $100,000, if your marginal tax rate is 45 percent is approximately $55,000. However, if you sold the security first and then donated the cash, your out-of-pocket donation cost would be $68,500 due to paying about $13,500 in capital gains tax.

We can help you determine which securities would be best suited for donation.

Charitable foundationAnother tax-effective charitable giving strategy is setting up your own charitable foundation.

• A private foundation gives you a high level of control and flexibility with respect to charitable giving, and enables you to create an enduring charitable legacy. You can make donations to your own foundation, and you will receive a donation tax receipt like any other donor. However, to maintain its charitable status, your

foundation must meet its annual disbursement quota – That is 3.5 percent of the average value of the foundation’s assets not used directly in charitable activities or administration, must be spent on charitable activities or on gifts to qualified donees.

• While providing a great deal of control and flexibility, a private foundation also involves certain costs and administrative requirements that must be considered. An alternative to a private foundation is making tax-deductible donations to a public foundation. Public foundations are very similar to private foundations in many respects, but involve less cost and administration. Although you do not have outright control now, you can still recommend to the public foundation’s directors which charities should receive grants. Similar to private foundations, in-kind donations of publicly listed securities to a public foundation are eligible for the zero capital gains inclusion rate.

Depending on your age and needs, there are other creative charitable giving strategies, especially those using life insurance to reduce taxes and significantly increase your charitable contribution after death to your favorite charity.

What are some tips on how employers can prevent and properly respond to workplace harassment complaints?

Q:

A: All Ontario employers are required by law to have a workplace harassment policy. However, unless accompanied by diligent enforcement and adequate training, even the best policies will have no impact on the workplace culture and environment.

Employers need to foster a workplace environment where employees who experience or witness harassment feel safe to report incidents. This is done by taking such complaints seriously, ensuring investigations are conducted independently and professionally and prohibiting reprisal against those who report harassment incidents in good faith.

Even if an employee’s concern is presented informally, the employer is still obligated to follow-up to ensure that any acts of harassment are investigated and prevented from re-occurring. If an employee feels strongly enough to allege harassment or disrespectful workplace behaviour, something has gone wrong in the workplace, and managers need to address it appropriately.

Finally, if an employer does not have human resources staff who have been specifically trained and are experienced in conducting workplace harassment investigations, employers should consider retaining an external professional.

Food for Thought: The Gluten Myth

Feature / by Marlene Deres

Have you noticed how many people are avoiding gluten these days? Following a gluten-free diet is the new trend in nutrition. It is also an area of diet and nutrition that causes a great deal of confusion.

A gluten-free diet is essential for people with Celiac Disease (an auto-immune reaction to gluten), non-Celiac gluten sensitivity and gluten intolerance. It is not necessary for most other people to avoid all grains that contain gluten.

So what is gluten? It is a protein composite found in some but not all grains. It is the protein that gives elasticity to the dough used to make most breads and baked goods. It acts as glue that holds the foods together, hence the name gluten.

Gluten is present in wheat, barley, rye and triticale (a hybrid cross between wheat and rye).If you are confused about the difference between gluten, wheat and grains in general, you are certainly not alone. People who test sensitive to wheat often ask, “If I have to avoid wheat, does that mean I should avoid all other grains containing gluten and follow a gluten-free diet?” The answer is “No”. You can eat other glutinous grains.

It is true that many people feel better when they avoid all gluten but they may feel just as well if they eliminated only wheat. Although the grains kamut and spelt are in the wheat family, many of us can enjoy those grains even if sensitive to whole wheat and/or white flour.

There are also several healthy grains that are naturally gluten-free such as rice, oats, buckwheat (also called kasha or soba), millet, teff, amaranth, and corn.

If you are not sensitive to all glutinous grains go ahead and enjoy them in moderation. Keep in mind, though, that whole grains are healthier than refined and processed grains. A whole grain is intact and has not been processed.

Whole grains are a healthy and important part of our diet. Don’t fall into the misguided belief that all grains are bad for everyone. Unless you have a medical condition that requires avoiding all grains, a variety of whole grains is a necessary component of a healthy diet. If you eat a meal that includes whole grains, for example brown rice or millet, you will reap the benefits of many nutrients. B vitamins, vitamin E, minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium), fibre, trace minerals (chromium, iodine, iron, zinc, selenium), phytochemicals (lycopene, flavonoids, isoflavens), and essential fatty acids (EFAs) are present in whole grains.

If you truly must avoid gluten, be aware that it is often hidden in foods where you would not expect it. Some of these culprits include soup, soya sauce, bouillon cubes, candies, lunch meats, hot dogs, vegetarian ‘meats’, food additives and preservatives, malt vinegar, and modified food starch. Gluten is often found in self-basting turkeys, seasoned mixes, sauces, and many packaged and prepared foods. Gluten may even be found in medications and vitamin supplements. Always check labels and ingredient lists and remember that ingredients in packaged foods change frequently. To avoid all gluten you must be diligent about reading food ingredient labels.

Remember too that just because a product is labelled wheat-free does not necessarily mean it is gluten-free. Although it may not contain wheat it may well consist of barley, rye or some other glutinous grain or by-product.

If you have specific dietary restrictions, adapt to them with a spirit of adventure and a willingness to let go of old habits. It will take time and patience so don’t push yourself to make all the changes overnight. You will have to plan ahead for those times when there is nothing on the menu that fits in with your guidelines. And remember, when looking for a quick snack, gluten-free junk food is still junk food.

Three Tips for Impacting Organizational Performance using Montessori Education StrategyItalian physician and researcher, Dr. Maria Montessori, was one of the first to revolutionize the realm of education when she developed a pedagogical method based on first-hand scientific knowledge to guide human development. The first Montessori children’s house was opened in Italy in 1907, and spreading internationally ever since. The method is one of the first to empower the individual, eliminate the traditional use of desks, and provide collaborative areas for constructive learning. Montessori is not only crucial for academic success but it is one of the keys to cultivating business innovation and an entrepreneurial mindset. Some of the most influential and revolutionary industry leaders are graduates of the Montessori method including Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Julia Child, Will Wright, Jimmy Wales, Jeff Bezos, and Taylor Swift, just to name a few.

Using Montessori strategy in corporate leadership is not unheard of although relatively new. In 2012, the Globe and Mail published an article, “Maria Montessori: Guru for a New Generation of Business Innovators,” which profiled a number of key leaders who were influenced by the method including Vancouver-based Founder and CEO of Payfirma Corp. “Everyone in the company, regardless of their position, was given opportunity to help build and design the user interface, and to improve the user experience,” a reference to the creative process

in designing their mobile payment app. “Professionals need to be able to guide their own learning and development based on their innate and instinctual needs – not those imposed by others who don’t know what moves them as individuals seeking purpose.”

In this article, I’ve shared three tips for impacting organizational performance using Montessori strategy, including some ideas that culminated later in my career while completing a Master’s degree and working at an independent, college preparatory school in the US market as a Canadian citizen. The experience of having taught American children made me realize how much potential and competitive talent we have in order to propel our economy forward, not only in the classroom but also as owners and leaders in the Canadian business landscape. Let’s take a look at some defining factors of an organizational setting:

Tip #1: The EnvironmentIn Montessori theory, the prepared environment is a strategically designed

space that cultivates exploration, autonomy and self-navigation so students’ skill sets

can flourish with appropriate guidance and tools. Mental preparation and didactic materials are central to a successful classroom-specific setting. Prepare your

staff for success so they can execute individual and group

goals effectively and collaboratively. Montessori settings are unique because rooms are laid out to maximize learning within

simultaneous subject areas. This past April, the Toronto Star published an article

announcing that the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is now experimenting with a

new workspace in their corporate real estate department, a dramatic infrastructural change that is meant to fuel innovation and interactivity, in addition to typical office structures. Doing so signifies a need for more balance between individual cubicle space and an “open-concept” design. Most importantly, do what you believe works best for your team. Set up a well-structured system with smooth work flow, and an environment that encourages discussion, curiosity and research. Your team will be grateful to have sufficient information to be productive, and proactive enough to make your business a success.

Tip #2: Role of the Leader Montessori teachers are “guides” rather than authoritative figures.

Similarly, a manager is not only one who assigns tasks, but leads groups effectively as a mentor or coach. Maintain a positive work environment, empower your team by delegating certain projects, and avoid micromanaging. This allows you to focus on bigger-picture goals as a leader who can build trust while moving your company forward. Marcus Erb of San Francisco-based Great Place to Work Institute once wrote in Entrepreneur magazine that, “the leaders of some of the best workplaces have turned the challenge on its head by building environments where people actually seek accountability and act as owners of the business, in turn eliminating the need for you to hover over them.” Try taking on a “mentor” mentality the next time you design your staff meetings, or lead small to large-scale projects.

Tip #3: Human CapitalIt is truly important to cultivate excellence in others. Montessori

students are integral to the classroom in the same way human capital is invaluable to employers, organizations and the economy. Montessori classrooms are developmentally appropriate, controlled settings that are strategically designed to challenge and maximize human potential. Invest in people and talent acquisition. Create training opportunities, career development platforms, and make learning programs an essential part of your company culture. This will help raise morale while enhancing cross-functional performance amongst departments. Also, team-building techniques can help eliminate the destructive barriers of silo thinking and allow for collaboration. Implementing these values will make your company a great one to work for. British economist Alfred Marshall said, “The most valuable of all capital is that invested in human beings.” He was the author of Principles of Economics published in 1890.

When it comes to our society’s youngest learners, their future is shaped by the world we leave behind. How can we continue to cultivate healthy learning environments that support autonomy and freedom within limits? How can we, as leaders and business professionals, put creativity, innovation, flexibility and economical thinking at the top of our agendas? It starts with taking a closer look at the core factors of organizational performance: the environment, the role of the leader, and human capital. Perhaps integrating Montessori education strategies can help too.

collapse without them. A number of them are control freaks that should never have been put into managerial positions, but they have their ways of getting there. They don’t really need staff – what they really crave is an entourage. Their egos drive them to be involved in everything, with morale and employee development as collateral damage.

Let’s say you run a company. Hiring people, paying them to work for you and then doing all the work yourself is counterproductive. Deploying resources this way can lead to massive inefficiencies – you end up doing work you weren’t hired for, while your reports end up getting paid for work they didn’t do. This is probably not something you would proudly explain to the chair of the board. The board isn’t paying you $300,000 a year to choose the cheese for the shareholders’ meeting.

Part of the reverse delegation problem is many people are addicted to excitement – the excitement of telling the world they’re in such demand that their life is out of control. Ask anyone how things are going, and I’ll bet their answer contains words like nuts, crazy, crazy-busy, insane, trying to catch up, exhausted, swamped, hectic, super-hectic and rollercoaster. Heaven forbid they admit that they’re not busy. At best, they would label themselves as lazy or disengaged. At worst, it would be perceived as an act of disloyalty to the hyper-society we live in and they wouldn’t be invited to the next neighbourhood barbecue.

SolutionsTwo approaches may work: self-help and HR-help. Self-help entails acknowledging the issue, developing the self-discipline to delegate and then sticking to that decision. HR-help is needed when people don’t

acknowledge the issue, so it has to come in the form of performance management and actionable feedback.

First, if you delegate a task and the employee tries to give it back with all kinds of excuses, resist the temptation to take it back. Even if you are frustrated, make a point of asking the employee to come to you with solutions for the issues he ran into, and then you can decide between alternatives... Just don’t take it back and do the work! You’ll be sending a crucial message to the employee and the organization at large.

Second, once you’ve delegated a task, don’t interfere. Make people responsible for the assignment and encourage them to deal with obstacles and deliver results. You can let them fall on their face a couple of times and hand them the first aid kit, but stay away from operational stuff – it’s simply not your job. Assume that you have competent staff and give them the opportunity to prove it. Or to prove you wrong.

Since relying on people’s self-discipline and ability for introspection may be dicey, you can achieve accountability by making delegation part of each manager’s performance review. Take my word for it – people start paying attention when things are being measured and their behaviour will change if there is a consequence.

When a manager has three consecutive annual reviews on which a lack of delegation skills is highlighted, would you give that manager additional responsibilities? Documenting the issue and providing meaningful feedback is crucial if you wish to address it. This is where HR has a key role and the organization as a whole can benefit.

Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to SuccessBy Adam Grant

In his new bestseller, Give and Take, Adam Grant challenges long-held assumptions that you need to be cutthroat in business to get ahead. Focusing on meaningful work, prosocial giving, and the influences of motivation, initiative and leadership, Grant suggests that in professional interactions, people act as “takers”, “givers”, or “matchers” and that this has a significant impact on work effectiveness and success.

Takers are people who expect to get more than they give and place self-interest over others to ensure they receive recognition for their efforts. Givers are at the other extreme, preferring to consider the needs of others in the workplace and who promote their colleagues’ achievements and successes. Matchers tend to try to balance the scales between taking and giving. Matchers are more common than Takers or Givers and are willing to support others, but they do expect reciprocity.

Traditional workplace logic holds that in a competitive environment, Takers are the group most likely to achieve success because of their drive and ambition. But as Grant argues, in today’s collaborative work environment, the greatest untapped source of motivation is a sense of service to others. Focusing on the contribution of our work to other people’s lives has the potential to make us more productive than being self-serving and is actually a more likely predictor of success.

Grant’s approach to success is that you do not need to be ruthless or self-serving in business to succeed; rather that teamwork, negotiation and leadership are the factors that drive business success. To that end, the takeaway message found in Give and Take is nothing but inspirational.

Adam Grant has been recognized as Wharton’s top-rated teacher and was granted tenure while still in his twenties. Give and Take has been translated into 27 languages and has been named one of the best books of 2013 by Amazon, Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal.
