facturer TVS is the most conserva-tive manufacturer in the country and the brand is also known for sparking controversies in the industry. Now, their technology partner BMW has caught up with their strategy by making one of the greatest u-turns in recent times. The brand, which assured through its offi cial Twitter handle that their fl agship offering G310R will be launched in the spring of 2017, is now busy reply-ing to fans that it doesn’t have any plans of launching the bike in India.

BACKGROUND

The controversial activities of TVS can be traced back to early 2000 when it decided to part ways with its then technology partner Suzuki that, too, at a time when the duo was fl ourishing in the then nascent performance segment. At a time when all the other brands hardly had one performance-oriented motorcycle, TVS-Suzuki partner-ship had three bikes, Shogun, Shaolin and Fiero, all toppers in their respective segment. After breaking ties, all the three bikes were discontinued making way for Pulsar’s domination. Not only that, Suzuki was not allowed to resume operations in the country as an individual brand till 2006, a gap

which the brand is still not able to fi ll bridge.

Secondly, TVS again got stuck in a fight with Bajaj when they introduced their bike Flame with twin spark induction, the trademark

patented technology of Bajaj. Finally, in all these years,

the brand did nothing but fi ddle around with the 150 cc engine of Suzuki Fiero reboring and using it for their Apache series.

NEW PARTNERSHIP, BUT DISAPPOINTMENTBut TVS, a couple of

years ago, surprised eve-ryone by announcing its

new tie-up with BMW. They also revealed the launch of

BMW G310R, their fl agship offer-ing at the time. Moreover, TVS went ahead and showcased its Akula concept bike, based on G310R, at the 2016 Auto Expo. The duo as-sured that Akula will be launched during the end of 2016 and G310R in the spring of 2017. Both the bikes have impressive specs on paper. But it’s July 2017 and there are no signs of any launches nearing even as TVS is testing Akula the length and breadth of the country. To add insult to injury, BMW has also outright said they have no plans of launching the G310R.

REASON FOR U-TURNEnthusiasts might wonder why

the duo, about to fl ourish in the segment, made a sudden u-turn. There are two rumoured theories fl oating on the Internet. Before that, let me highlight the video taken down recently after going viral on YouTube. It’s about a rider on Bajaj Dominar 400 chasing an Akula on test. The Dominar rider couldn’t keep up with the test bike even after touching the top speed on his bike. Taking this video as a reference, a few experts claimed that TVS was eyeing to launch Akula fi rst targeting buy-ers of Dominar by making their offering perform better and at the

same time establishing exclusive showrooms for G310R. They also claimed that once Akula gets set-tled in the market, the duo will go ahead and launch the G310R.

While this theory seems justifi -able, there is more to it than meets the eye. On a broader perspective, Bajaj-KTM duo recently launched 2017 versions of three bikes from the KTM stable: Duke 200, Duke 250 and Duke 390. The Duke 390, which already produces over 10 hp more power than the G310R also got a handful of electronic rider aids including an in-tegrated computer with a TFT display.

All this had made the 2017 Duke 390 terrifi c value for mon-ey directly targeting G310R’s estimated price.

So, according to the second theory, BMW played it safe by halting

its plan of launching its flagship offering as it can never compete with the highly-advanced Duke 390.

FINAL TAKEForget the theories: TVS-BMW

did a great mistake at the start itself. Despite knowing about KTM-Bajaj partnership devel-oping a massive 373cc engine for their offerings, the duo went ahead and made a much smaller 313cc engine.

The small engine bike is not able to compete with the bigger one in performance which is clearly evident from their paper specifi ca-tions. If at all BMW wants to com-pete with KTM, it can do it only for snob value and by creating a niche segment for itself dismiss-ing competition from KTM. The duo had landed a failed strategy despite TVS knowing about the In-dian market which is mostly driven by performance factor at

an affordable price.

a lot of initiatives to move towards what they call Dig-ital India. They have so far made card transactions and other e-services popular primarily by reducing cash fl ow. Post-demonetisation, there has been an incred-ible rise in the use of e-transaction as many people slowly moved to the digital era. Various mobile apps such as MyGov, Onl ine Registration System, Digi locker and ePathshala, were introduced by different government agencies to provide services and information. So, to make it simpler in taxing, the government now has come up with an app called Aaykar Setu to help users carry out basic tax-related tasks on their own.

The term Aayakar means income-tax and Setu stands for bridge. Like most government apps, it is free. As of now, it is available only for An-droid users and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

WHAT IT DOES The main motto of the app is to

help Indians understand the vari-ous taxes such as direct taxes, fi le income-tax, apply for PAN (Perma-nent Account Number), check TDS (tax deducted at source) statement, and even share grievances with the

right authorities. They have also added a live chat feature, which will be available to users from 10 am to 6 pm, to answer all tax-related queries.

Users can also receive notifi ca-tions for important dates and new announcements related to income-tax. The other key feature is that the app allows users to link their Aadhaar number with PAN. This is to make an easy way for people to link Aadhaar and PAN, following the SC ruling.

A quiz game called Tax Gyaan has also been added. The app does not require an account to create and it is much better designed than the other government apps. However, in many of the sections, users are redirected to webpages outside the app.
