In the film Up in the Air, George Clooney’s character gives motivational lectures asking the question, “What’s in your backpack?” The point of these lectures was to convince its listeners that the more baggage that we carry in our lives, the more difficult it is to move forward.

As we learn from the film, the flaw in this presentation was the notion that long-

term personal connections, along with most material possessions, are equally dispensable, and Clooney’s character begins to understand that there is value to the “baggage” that personal relationships provide. But I believe he was on to something regarding other weighty matters. Sometimes, we must learn to shed the remnants of past that leave us stationary.

Between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we are asked to do just that, albeit

symbolically. During these days, when our awareness of our behavior is heightened, we head to a moving body of water and throw bread into it. The bread represents our sins, and when we throw the bread, we are doing more than discarding carbohydrates; we are both acknowledging our past shortcomings and our desire to avoid being lured into the wrong direction.

At Emanu-El, our tradition is to gather in the late afternoon of the first day of

Rosh Hashanah (or the second day, if the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat) close to the Synagogue, and to cast our sins together as a community. I realize that it can be difficult to move away from meals with family and friends following an intense morning of services, but I hope that you will be able to join us all the same. For when we show our willingness to empty our “backpacks” as a group, we may be motivated by the intentions and seriousness of those around us to stick to our hopes for a better year ahead.

In case you cannot join us for our formal Tashlich service, please know that you

can perform Tashlich anytime between Rosh Hashanah and the onset of Yom Kippur, except for on Shabbat. Still, if you can join us as a community, we can embody the traditional phrase: “Hazak Hazak V’nithazek” — “Be strong, be strong, and may we be strengthened.”

May our community strengthen one another in the new year.

SAVE THE DATE

Fall Congregation Meeting

Sunday, October 13th, 10:15AM-Noon

Please plan to attend our Congregation Meeting. As is our tradition, you will get important updates on synagogue finances, programs and religious school. Also, we look forward to sharing the plans for the kitchen renovation.

The agenda for the meeting will include a focus group where we will invite your thoughts on the critical question “What should we look for in a new rabbi?”

Your perspective will help frame our search. While no one person defines who we are as a congregation, I think we all agree that the selection of a new rabbi is one of the most

important decisions we have before us. Please make your voice heard.

Winston Churchill famously said “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Synagogue Emanu-El could never survive without those who live this adage through word and deed. As you look back over the past year, deciding what will remain constant and what will change, I hope you will ask how much you give? I am not talking financial giving, but giving your time. Depending on where we are in life, some have more time than others. Who amongst us, though, can’t carve out a few hours to make a meaningful project a success. Please consider your passions. Undoubtedly, you will realize a reward by volunteering. In addition, you will set an example for those around you. Our synagogue committee chairs and their teams lead the way. Contact a chair person and let them know how you want to help. May the New Year bring health, happiness and fulfillment. L’shana tova!

Shana Tovah! Hope everyone is enjoying the Holidays and our beautiful services. Thank you to all who made this possible. Sisterhood wishes each and everyone of you a happy, healthy and peaceful year! Last week your Sisterhood Executive Committee met to plan for the new year. We heard you!!!! Less meetings and more special events in addition to some “Pop-Up” occasions! Stay tuned! Barbara Backer has offered to teach Mah Jong in Tuesdays to anyone who wants to learn. We will consider afternoon and/or evening classes. Please contact Barbara at [email protected] if you are interested. As you are aware, the Synagogue kitchen must have some serious work done. Sisterhood is hoping to make some monies to help the Synagogue through its Judaica Shop. We are hoping to have a display case so we can show more merchandise. SO, please think of your Judaica Shop for home Judaica items as well as gifts, especially hostess gifts with a Judaica twist, or Bar/Bat Mitzvah gifts. This is like a triple Mitzvah! A nice Judaica gift and Sisterhood helps the Synagogue! Do you have a child in college or graduate school? Sisterhood would love to send special holiday gifts to them with our compliments to let them know we are thinking about them. To do this, we need names and addresses. Please send the information to me at [email protected]. Our Senior Single Women Sundays have been such a success thanks to Dr Harriett Steinert. It was Harriett’s idea to host senior singles periodically on a Sunday night to provide an opportunity to meet different people and socialize. The group is open to all singles in the community! If you are single and have not received an email, please contact Brenda Lederman at [email protected]. If you don’t have email, someone will call you. Please remember to send in your dues for this Sisterhood year!!! Again, Shana Tovah with love, Gloria

Sisterhood Book Club met at Anne Sbrocchi’s home to discuss The Library

One of the goals of Men’s Club is to communicate better with our members. We are in the process of improving how we do that. Most of the time we communicate through the weekly bulletin and the monthly scroll. But let’s face it, we don’t always pay a lot of attention to those communications (if you’re even reading this, we’ve accomplished something). So we’re putting together an accurate list of paid Men’s Club members and their email addresses so we can communicate by email directly to our members. Granted, that’s not perfect either as we don’t always pay attention to our emails. But it does allow us to communicate a targeted message to our targeted audience. Thanks to Leah and Ruth in the office for their help in assembling an accurate-as-possible list. We will send reminders of upcoming events to our members this way. Upcoming in October is the Sukkah Build on Oct. 6th (rain date Oct. 13th) and Brisket & Scotch in the Sukkah on Oct. 17th. More information about that is on this page. On behalf of Men’s Club president Harold Grater and past president Charles Richards, I wish all members of the congregation L ’Shana Tovah. Howard Snow Men’s Club Vice President

We are fortunate to have missed the forecasted hit by Hurricane Dorian. With the pending storm, many came together to make sure we were safe.

Our staff, Rabbi, and minyanaires lovingly wrapped our Torah scrolls in plastic and stored them in the windowless classroom. Thanks to the staff who made sure our computers

were out of harm’s way. To Larry and Anita, thank you for making sure we had a Shabbat “nosh” after services. To Rabbi Rosenbaum, the stream of communications updated us and reassured us that all was well. Thank you.

Kelly called our landscaper asking them to clear the front so our entrance would be safe on Shabbat. They couldn’t make it. Enter Kelly and her son Liam, who brought their leaf blower and tirelessly made sure paths were clear. Above and beyond. Much appreciated.

This month, on the holiday of Shmini Atzeret, we begin to add the phrase “You cause the winds to blow and the rains to fall” when we say Amidah during services. We’re grateful they didn’t come too early!

Tikun Olam: By All Ages, For All Ages

We are always better together and together we will be as we make Tikun Olam an ever important part of Synagogue Emanu-El. This year, Evaline Delson, our Tikun Olam congregation chair person, was joined by Daphne Hubara and our COSY co-Chairs, Lily Bluestein and Tricia Eisenhart to craft a Tikun Olam initiative. They selected a yearlong theme, Circle of Life. Each quarter, the congregation and COSY will address a specific program targeting different stages of life. Make this the year you volunteer. Please watch The Scroll for program dates

and how to participate.

Tikun Olam 5780: Circle of Life

September/October/November — Families: Donations will be collected in advance and distributed as needed

for families in designated disaster zones. If space becomes an issue, we will have access to a storage unit. If, at the

end of our collection period, we still have leftover items, we will coordinate with local relief organizations. A

“General Donation Needs” list will be provided.

December/January/February — Infants: Filling the Crib: Nurses in Labor & Delivery often stock their

personal lockers with items for new mothers who are not able to afford basic infant items. We’ll place a crib in our

lobby and invite congregants to fill it with infant accessories. These items will be distributed as needed at the St.

Francis Hospital Mother, Baby and Special Care Nursery.

March/April/May — Senior Program: With guidance from our local Jewish Family Services branch of

Federation, we will coordinate activities to benefit out Seniors. We’ll cook and deliver meals, make visits, and help

arrange rides to appointments and/or synagogue events.

June/July/August — Children: As school is ending, and our kids are sent home with extras, we will start

collecting school supplies to benefit students at Mary Ford Elementary School. We also will request from the

school a “wish list” to include needed items as well as needed hands-on help that we could provide when schools

open in August.

Date TBD: We’ve been contacted by the Orangeburg and Florence Jewish communities for help cleaning the

gravestones in their cemeteries. We are currently trying to schedule a fall or spring date.

As always, we will celebrate Hanukkah with our Night of Giving to support the Kosher Food Pantry.

Thank you to all who

donated school supplies!

My dear Emanu-El friends, You may have heard the buzz going around the synagogue recently about the state of our kitchens (meat and dairy). Just a couple of months ago, we had a situation where the drainage pipes under the tiled floor clogged. We were able to clear them out for the time being, but were told that they have started collapsing and in dire need of replacement. They cannot be cleared again. Access to these pipes means tearing up the floor. We knew last year that we needed to replace the ceiling tiles, since they are very dirty and breaking down in certain areas. Then, we find out that our updated fire suppressant system is not usable because our wiring (located above the ceiling tiles) is not capable of supporting that system. This means that we are without fire protection in our kitchens. Needless to say, this is a problem and we can no longer use our ovens because of the fire danger. I know this all sounds very dire and it does mean that we must undertake renovations in our kitchens immediately. The kitchens have been virtually untouched since the synagogue was built forty years ago. We have contracted with Rosenblum Coe to be our architect. Engineers will be in our kitchens assessing exactly what work must be done. We intend to start this work right away. Every attempt will be made to avoid shutting down totally. Our first undertaking will be repairs of our electrical system and bringing all wiring up to code. We will be reporting to you regularly on our progress. We would also bring to your attention that we have established a Kitchen Renovation Fund for this project. This Fund is totally separate from the Sisterhood Kitchen Fund. The Sisterhood Fund is solely for kitchen furnishings — from appliances to can openers. This new Renovation Fund is just that — our new renovation. There are many opportunities for you and your family to contribute to this Fund on any level. Our committee is excited to have this “new” kitchen for us now and for those who will come after us. I would happily discuss this work with you and answer any questions. Thank you for your understanding and patience during this construction phase. Best wishes for a Healthy 5780, Brenda Lederman Committee Chairperson [email protected]

S H A B B AT T O G E T H E R

Thank you to all who opened up your homes for Shabbat Together on Friday, September 13th. Our wonderful hosts were Patti and Mickey Bagg, Eileen and Stanley Chepenik, Joan and Perry Halushka, Lydia and Adam Mandel, Rabbi Rosenbaum, Sunny and Samuel Steinberg, and Elaine and Stuart Tessler. Also, Daphne Hubara hosted a Shabbat for young children and their families at the synagogue that evening. We had approximately 90 congregants participate among our host homes and synagogue. We hope that, for our next Shabbat Together, many others will open their homes or be a guest at a Shabbat table. Everyone had a fabulous evening!

L’DOOR VA-DOOR Have you moved into a new home?

Do you have doorposts that don’t have mezuzot? It’s considered a mitzvah to hang a

mezuzah (an ornament with a small scroll containing the words of the Shema) on most of our homes’ doorposts. Rabbi Rosenbaum would be pleased to come to your home to help you hang your mezuzot with proper

blessings. This occasion can be simple and private, or more elaborate if you choose.

Please be in touch with the Rabbi if you’re interested

in adding a Jewish flavor to your home.
