Qualification Purpose Statement Overview What does this qualification cover? The objective of the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) provides learners aged 14 years and over with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to be able to respond successfully and safely to accidents, illnesses and injuries as they occur in a sporting environment. Therefore, this qualification will prepare learners for employment and will also enable successful learners to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level if they wish to do so. Who is this qualification designed for? This qualification is designed for learners aged 14 and over to provide them with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to be able to respond successfully and safely to accidents, illnesses and injuries as they occur in a sporting environment. Therefore, this qualification will prepare learners for employment and will also enable successful learners to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level if they wish to do so. Progression What could this qualification lead to? Learners achieving this qualification could consider progression to another qualification in areas such as sports therapy, sports massage or treatment of injury. This, in turn, could lead to learners being employed as an assistant to a sports club physiotherapist. Holders of the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) may wish to gather further evidence to achieve units2 of the 1st4sport Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Active Leisure, Learning and Well-being Operational Services (QCF). Accomplishment of these units can only be achieved via an organisation/college approved to deliver the 1st4sport Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Active Leisure, Learning and Well-being Operational Services (QCF). Achievement will require learners to demonstrate competence in fulfilling all of the assessment criteria and learning outcomes in the workplace over a period of time. Learners must understand that they may need additional training and/or qualifications if they are working in specific sporting environments or circumstances that present additional risks, such as in water or at high altitude and, in line with current UK guidelines, customs and practice, learners should update their knowledge and skills at least every three years. Employers in the industry would most probably expect to see evidence that this has taken place. Learners should also be advised that the requirements of the first aid qualifications are regularly revised and/or amended to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Legislation and European laws on first aid. Qualification Approval Conditions

1st4sport recognised centres are required to comply with the 1st4sport Centre Recognition Conditions. All centres who have achieved qualification approval status for this qualification are also obliged to comply with the following Qualification Approval Conditions. Failure to comply with all relevant conditions will result in sanctions being applied, which may lead to qualification approval status being revoked. Centres are advised to ensure their qualification workforce is familiar with the conditions which impact upon them, their role and responsibilities.

Section One: Qualification Resources

QCON 1.1 Qualification workforce capacity and ratios

Conditions Evidence: minimum workforce

The recognised centre is required to have a qualified and competent qualification workforce in place which includes as a minimum3:

An appointed Qualification Administrator

An appointed Quality Coordinator

At least one appropriately qualified Tutor

At least one appropriately qualified Assessor

At least one appropriately qualified Internal Verifier (IV)4

To ensure the appropriate support for, and monitoring of, learners during practical sessions, the delivery and assessment of the qualification is recommended to operate at a ratio of one appropriately qualified tutor/assessor to a maximum of 20 learners. The observed assessments must be conducted on a 1:1 basis. Centres should be mindful of their group size when planning delivery timescales and assessments as it may be appropriate to have more than one assessor present if you are aiming for delivery within one day.

Must be evidenced in the Staff section of Athena, the 1st4sport Quality Assurance System5. Each member of staff must be named and linked to the qualification and role. This information must be current at all times and include as a minimum:

An appointed Qualification Administrator

An appointed Quality Coordinator

At least one appropriately qualified tutor

At least one appropriately qualified assessor

At least one appropriately qualified Internal Verifier (IV)

Tutors, assessors and internal verifiers are required to upload onto the staff section of Athena, their up to date CVs and copies of their valid and authentic certificates to evidence their competencies

QCON 1.2 Qualification administrator

The recognised centre is required to recruit and deploy a qualification administrator responsible for timely, accurate qualification administration activities. All administration activities must comply with the 1st4sport Position Statement: Qualification Administration.

QCON 1.4 Tutor/Assessors

Conditions Evidence: initial competence

Tutors/assessors of the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) must either be one of the following:

a doctor registered with the General Medical Council (GMC)

a nurse registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

a paramedic registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC)

a chartered physiotherapist

a sports therapist registered with the Society of Sports Therapy and educated to a minimum of Diploma level

hold the FA Diploma in the Treatment and Management of Injuries

or be able to

provide a log of teaching first aid within the last 3 years or

provide an acceptable record of competently teaching theoretical and practical first aid sessions under the supervision of a suitably qualified Tutor/Assessor

QCON 1.4 Tutor/Assessors (cont)

They must also have the following:

current experience (within the previous three years) of first aid skills

hold a current First Aid at Work certificate issued in accordance with the Health and Safety (First Aid regulations) 1981.

NB: It is recommended that assessors hold or are working towards a Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement, a Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment, a Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement, or equivalent.

QCON 1.5 Internal verifiers

Conditions Evidence: initial competence

The recognised centre is required to recruit and deploy an internal verifier who must hold the following:

a 1st4sport Level 3 Award in delivering Learning (QCF) or equivalent

or

a Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement, a Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment or equivalent

or

a 1st4sport Certificate in Internal Verification in Sport, a Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Process and Practice or equivalent.

NB: It is recommended that internal verifiers who do not hold a verifying qualification aspire to complete an appropriate verifying qualification as soon as possible to maintain the integrity of the qualification.

QCON 1.6 Qualification delivery sites, facilities and environment

Conditions Evidence: sites and facilities

The recognised centre is required to have one or more delivery sites which contain facilities to support the programme of learning and assessment. These must comply with health and safety regulations and have in place appropriate access arrangements. All training and/or assessment sites must include the following facilities:

a practical area with sufficient space for learners to be able to practice practical treatment and management skills

a theory space that is close to practical areas (if these cannot be in the same room) to accommodate up to 24 persons which includes multimedia facilities, flip charts and flip chart pens.

The environment must be conducive to learning; lighting and temperature appropriate to learner needs. The practical and theory spaces must be safe and must not be affected by noise from other classes/activities.

The recognised centre must ensure that all learners wear appropriate apparel.

QCON 1.9 Qualification fees6

Conditions Evidence: fees

The recognised centre is required to pay a £35 learner registration and certification fee per registered learner when the course is authorised with 1st4sport within the appropriate timescales. The recognised centre is required to ensure that learners are provided with information on the total cost of achieving the qualification; this should include a comprehensive package of learning and assessment and any optional costs made very clear at the point the learner enters into a contract with the centre.

Section Two: Administration, initial assessment and inductions

QCON 2.1 Course/programme administration

QCON 2.2 Learner enrolment, agreement and registration period

Conditions Evidence: enrolment process

The recognised centre is required to have a fair and equitable enrolment process. In doing so relevant learner information must be collected and initial assessment of learner’s eligibility be conducted. Where eligibility is confirmed, the recognised centre is required to have an agreement in place with each learner to ensure that they:

conduct themselves accordingly in accordance with the Learner Agreement/Contract sportscoach UK code of conduct

make all relevant payments

understand that the registration period for this qualification is 24 months in which time they must complete all aspects of their learning and assessment including reassessments.

attend all components of the learning and assessment programme (unless other arrangements have been made related to RPL)

comply with recognised centre policy and procedure

comply with the qualification conditions, 1st4sport policy, position statements and related processes

QCON 2.3 Learner Eligibility and Pre-requisites

Conditions Evidence: pre-requisites

The recognised centre is required to conduct an initial assessment of learners to ensure that the pre-requisites to registration and certification are considered and the outcome recorded during the application process. Prior to registration learners are required to:

be accurately identified9

be at least 14 years of age

be able to communicate effectively in English10 (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing).

There are no additional pre-requisites to certification other then successful completion of the required assessments. NB: Learners and recognised centres should note that in order for an individual to practise first aid for sporting activities, they are required to hold a minimum of a current Emergency First Aid qualification or higher, based on the risk assessment for their sport and coaching venue, and it is strongly recommended that they also attend a safeguarding and protecting children workshop.

records of activities to check understanding of the English language (where this is deemed to be necessary).

QCON 2.4 Learner Eligibility and Barriers to Access

Conditions Evidence: access arrangements

The recognised centre is required to conduct an initial assessment of learners to consider barriers to access in accordance Equality Act 201011 and its protected characteristics. The barriers to access to this qualification which preserve the integrity, the technical requirements and safety of learners and participants include:

age – individuals under the age of 14 are not permitted to attend this qualification. This serves to prevent inexperienced coaches working. As a result no adjustments to this barrier can be applied.

race – individuals who are not English, Welsh or Irish and/or those who do not speak these as a first language may be prevented from accessing the qualification if they cannot communicate to the appropriate standard in these languages. In such cases reasonable adjustments will not be applied.

disability – individuals with mental or physical or learning disabilities may find some of the competencies difficult and/or dangerous to their well being

pregnancy and maternity – it could be detrimental to the health of a pregnant woman and her unborn child to attempt the full extent of the competencies within this qualification.

Where learners have declared disability, pregnancy or maternity barriers, reasonable adjustments should be requested in accordance with the 1st4sport Position Statement: Access Arrangements.

QCON 2.5 Learner Inductions


The recognised centre is required to provide an effective qualification/course induction to all learners which introduces:

- health and safety - equality and diversity - data protection - child/vulnerable adult safeguarding - appeals - complaints - malpractice/maladministration

information on their Unique Learner Number (ULN) and the Personal Learner Record (PLR) (for centres in England only at this time).

Section Three: Training and Assessment

QCON 3.1 Training and Assessment Hours

Conditions Evidence: inductions

The standardised assessment materials are provided within the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) Learner Pack. Guidance on how to use these materials is provided within the Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) Tutor/Assessor/Verifier Guidance. This is aligned to the recommended guided learning hours for the qualification which are approximately 8 hours depending upon learners’ needs. In doing so the recognised centre must ensure that the mandatory unit is completed, giving learners 1 credit. Each credit is equivalent to 10 hours of learning time.

QCON 3.2 The Training and Assessment Programme

The recognised centres are required to use the recommended outline programme of training and assessment contained within this specification, adapting it only where necessary to meet the specific needs of individual learners. In delivering the programme of training and assessment, Centres are required to ensure that they use the detailed tutor guidance as provided by 1st4sport. In delivering the programme the following must be considered:

QCON 3.3 Assessment Specification

Conditions Evidence: assessment

Centres are required to ensure this assessment specification is fully complied with without any deviation. To achieve the qualification, learners are required to have, in summary, assessed evidence of:

a clear understanding of the role of a first-aider in a sporting environment

a knowledge of what should be within a first aid kit, and its uses

an ability to assess the risk of a sport and the environment in which it is performed

a knowledge of common injuries and illnesses in sport, their signs, symptoms and treatment methods

the skills to be able to administer first aid to a range of common injuries and illnesses (a minimum of 10 out of 13 scenarios must be successfully completed).

Assessment methods which have been reviewed for construct validity for this qualification include:

completion of portfolio (containing practical tasks and written assignments)

practical demonstration.


a record of learners attendance and achievement of each task and units, the assessor and completion dates

assessed and annotated learner assessment tasks contained within the 1st4sport Learner Packs in line with the 1st4sport Tutor, Assessor, Verifier Guidance

The recognised centre is required to use valid and reliable assessment tools which have been designed by 1st4sport to meet the needs of the identified assessment methods (above). It is required that the centre uses these methods and materials to promote consistency of standards across the delivery of the qualification. The standardised assessment materials are provided within the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) Learner Pack. Guidance on how to use these materials is provided within the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) Tutor/Assessor/Verifier Guidance to Assessment Where a recognised centre wishes to adapt these tools or use alternative arrangements to meet the needs of a particular group of learners, they should refer to the 1st4sport Position Statement: Alternative Assessment Arrangements.

QCON 3.8 Eligibility of Learners for Certification

The recognised centre is required to ensure that learners who have successfully completed all pre-requisites, assessment requirements and who have been confirmed by the tutor/assessor as eligible for certification are certificated. Where a verification sampling plan requires an intervention to be conducted, outcomes must not be confirmed to learners until the sampling and any residual actions have been completed.

QCON 3.9 Reassessments

The recognised centre is required to ensure that learners who are unsuccessful in any aspect of assessment are offered a maximum of two opportunities to re-sit the appropriate assessment component within their period of registration (24 months). Recognised centres may levy additional charges for conducting reassessments. All reassessments must be conducted in accordance with the assessment specification.

Section Four: Internal Quality Assurance

QCON 4.1 Internal Verification Strategy

The recognised centre is required to have in place an internal verification strategy which includes strategic objectives which include, but are not limited to the following:

a selected sample of evidence and assessor feedback across 25% of learners is internally verified from 50% of the programmes authorised

all assessors and all types of assessment (including direct observation of assessment practice) are internally verified across all active assessment sites, over a twelve month period

one standardisation activities are conducted annually and focussed on assessment and internal verification

internal verification adopts a risk based approach and those assessor and assessments that are perceived as higher risk experience greater IV interventions and vice-versa.

Appendix B: 1st4sport Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) Code of Practice

Competence Holders of the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) are expected to:

1 maintain the currency of all their first aid qualifications, attending CPD events and refresher training appropriate to their role

2 ensure they have the technical competence for deployment in the sporting environment in which they are working

3 only carry out first aid activities they have received training on and are competent to perform

4 refer injuries and illnesses beyond their level of competence to an appropriate practitioner (eg paramedic, doctor, physiotherapist)

5 complete all records accurately in line with organisational procedures and maintaining confidentiality wherever possible.

Environment Holders of the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) are expected to:

6 dress professionally and appropriately for the environment in which they will be working

7 ensure they are familiar with the environment in which they are acting as a first-aider and be aware of the potential risks of both the environment and the sporting activity

8 ensure there is an adequately stocked first aid kit available for use for the sporting activity and environment

9 ensure there is a mechanism in place to contact the emergency services if required. Relationships Holders of the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) are expected to:

10 establish appropriate working relationships with participants, protecting themselves from false accusations of misconduct

11 explain to casualties any proposed treatment and gain their verbal consent to proceed wherever possible.

Working With Children and Vulnerable Adults Holders of the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in First Aid for Sport (QCF) are expected to:

12 gain written consent from parents/guardians prior to treating a child/vulnerable adult

13 ensure a witness is present to observe any treatment carried out on a child/vulnerable adult

14 ensure they have access to emergency contact details for parents/guardians wherever possible if they are not present at the sporting activity.
