Body shapes; colors of eyes, hair, and skins; likes and dislikes; mental and artistic differences - all are ways of making our world more interesting and exciting. The program also shows that while many differences exist, people are also very much alike. Moreover, the presentation explains that some people may be fearful of differences, and that their fear may turn to anger and hatred when they overlook similarities and don't take time to understand the differences and why they exist. Through the magic of Rosie O'Flanigan, viewers are swept away on a field trip to the United States Geological Survey. Cartographers, surveyors, and scribes are introduced during an up-close look at the mapmaking process. Viewers learn that the first step in making a map is taking an aerial photograph of the land. Next, surveyors go out into the field to check the details on the photograph, record the distances between objects, and check elevations. Computers are used to "draw" the map. Then Scribers color the map to show detail, such as lakes and land contours and boundaries. Viewers learn that city planners often used overlays to help them plan and visualize new developments, such as parks and streets. Advantages and disadvantages of each are given. The ideas of birth, growth, change, and decay in this gentle, sensitive program make it relevant to many areas of study, including language arts, social studies, art, and personal development -- as well as biology, for which it is designed. The program opens with the poem, The Hourglass, written by President John Quincy Adams. Four examples from the plant, fungi, and animal kingdoms are shown in a condensed timeline of their life spans: a flowering plant, a toadstool, a frog, and a human being.
