Painting Creation :I got in touch with the art of painting after I entered the Taichung Normal School. The first year I learned drawing and watercolor in the regular classes. The second year (1958) I learned Chinese ink painting, mainly imitating and studying the ancient styles of landscape painting. After graduation in 1960, I got a teaching job at the Chungming Elementary School. As the school is close to the Normal School, I took opportunities to get Mr. Lu’s instruction. After I went to the National Taiwan University in 1963, I continued my studio work when I had time.I also participated in exhibitions and got many awards. Today, a few paintings are still in my collection.

Painting Creation:This period I immigrated to the United States, nine years later moved to Hong Kong, and then moved back to the United States five years later. In the United States I have moved between many states, either studying or working. Nowhere is not full of challenges, but this also provided me with experiences for my life.As the main duty in the period was research and teaching, painting was only for leisure time. Most of the works were in the traditional style, but a few pieces were experimental in new styles, such as Surrealistic and Cubist.

Painting Creation:

When I was a visiting professor at the Tunghai University in the fall of 1995, I had more time to do painting and thus created a series of works in new styles. Later, these paintings have been collected in the book On My Own Paintings, published in 1999. After I came back to SJSU in 1996, teaching and administration work took up most of my time, so there was no time for painting. 2001, I had a half year vacation, it gave me time to play with my brush again. I took the opportunity to visit the National Taiwan Normal University and held a solo show in the university gallery.

Painting Creation:In 2005 for the half-retired life, I offered weekend art classes in the Chinese School and my in-home studio. For teaching, I did some traditional style painting again. One year later, because I took the visiting professor position in Taiwan, the class was terminated. However, this left me with some traditional style paintings. While I reached the age of 65, my eyes gradually lost the reading energy, it became hard for me to do research and write long articles. Therefore, I turned my energy to painting. As there is no pressure, I have a great freedom to do what I like. My painting therefore has a great variety, no matter in style, subject, or media. In 2012 I collected the works for a new book On My Own Painting II, to be published soon. The paintings collected have been divided into four series: 1)Natural Scenes—landscapes, flowers, and animals; 2) Human Life; 3) Religious Philosophy and Stories; 4) Surrealistic and Abstract. The following are a few examples.
