Im sure everyone will enjoy an longer sleep in to escape those frosty mornings which are becoming more frequent now. SCHOOL VALUES Caring – we make sure our school is safe and inclusive. The habit or way of thinking that teachers and students are focussing on the final two weeks of terms is: I practice kindness. We are promoting an inclusive school environment and teaching students to embrace and appreciate everyone for what makes them unique and special. STUDENT ACTION GROUP – REDUCING OUR RUBBISH A group of students from 4/5/6 have gotten together to try to make a difference – firstly in their classrooms, but they are hoping to influence the whole school. Together, they are monitoring how much rubbish they have and what types of rubbish. The girls hope to challenge the Bendigo Council to provide us with an Organics bin and to have all families being more ‘waste aware’. They plan to write to our local council, create posters for our school and provide information to all the students about the small ways each of us can contribute. What a fantastic way to contribute to society and I look forward to seeing the great thing they can achieve.

FEATURE - THIS WEEK’S STUDENT AUTHOR Yesterday I had a visit from Van who shared his writing with me! This young man has some great writing skills. He impressed me with the ideas in his story (he wrote a narrative), his correct use of various punctuation, his attempts to spell tricky words and his use of interesting vocabulary in his writing. Thanks Van!

WOOLIES EARN AND LEARN Monday 25th June is the last day to collect your stickers for this year’s Earn & Learn Program! Please continue to collect your stickers and bring them in to help us receive some valuable resources for our school. Our box is located at the school office. Please bring them into the office by Thursday 27th June. So far we have collected over 5,000 stickers, already more than our 2017 total!!! Thanks for your support.

THANK YOU A big thank you to the Marwood family for their kind donation of some lovely new books. The books are being thoroughly enjoyed in all the classrooms and are greatly appreciated by all the students and staff.

REMINDERS MAGGI GRAVY MIX FUNDRAISER Thanks to everyone who supported the Maggi Gravy Mix fundraiser. Orders will be delivered to school on Friday 21st June at 3:00pm in the staffroom. There will be a few 1kg or 2kg tubs of the Rich Gravy Mix available to purchase on Friday if you missed putting in your order. Thanks to Kim Hanson for organising this fundraiser again.

TERM 2 UNIFORM ORDER If you would like to order any uniform, please complete the form and return it to the school office with the money by Friday 21st of June.

SOMERS CAMP A reminder that the full payment of $260.00 should be made to the school office by Wednesday 26th of June.

TEACHING KINDNESS: Here are some easy steps to build empathy and kindness in your children. 1. Be a kindness role model. Our kids are soaking in everything we do and say. Make sure your child catches you being kind. You might offer to help someone struggling to hold packages in line at the post office, call or send a card to a relative who is sick, or any number of other things. If you volunteer your time in a more formal way, make sure your child knows what you do and why it is important to you. Talk about kindness as an important value in your family. 2. Use story or TV time to teach kindness. Reading a book or watching a TV show with your child provides a great framework for talking about kindness. Help your child think about what motivates a character by asking, “What were they thinking or how were they feeling when they said or did that?” Since we all want to teach our kids the consequences of their actions, a good follow up question could be, “How do you think that made the other person (or animal, if relevant) feel?” And of course, if one of the characters in the book or show misses an opportunity to be kind ask, “Why do you think they chose not to do anything?” Finally, help your child connect what they are hearing or seeing with their own life. Asking, “What would you have done in that situation?” is a great way to do that. 3. Make a kindness chart. Research shows that people who keep track of their own acts of kindness toward others are more likely to be grateful, happier, and engage in more acts of kindness. Make a chart with your child that can hang on the refrigerator (or any place where you and your child will see it frequently). Have your child count and record each act of kindness she does throughout the day. Take a broad view of kindness–it might be directed toward an animal, the environment, family member, or friend. Talk with your child about how she felt when she was kind and, if that kindness was towards another person, how she thinks that person felt. 4. Listen with kindness. Listening carefully is a great way to show kindness to another person. Help your child hone this skill by having him interview someone like a new friend, a relative they may not see often, or you! Brainstorm a list of questions together before the interview. Basic questions like “What is your favourite food? What is your favourite colour? What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time?” are fine. The point is for your child to have practice listening to someone else as a way to learn about him. 5. Make kindness a family activity. Volunteering can be a great activity for “family time”. Talk to your kids about starting the tradition of volunteering as a family. Some families participate in a food drive every year during a particular holiday time like Christmas. Others commit to a particular walk-a-thon or park clean up each year or helping out at School. Let your kids be part of the planning process by helping choose an activity and/or a population to support. With younger children, you can provide a list of several choices and let them pick. Older children can help you research different volunteer opportunities in your community. Families often describe feeling closer, more like a team, and fulfilled when they share a volunteer experience together. By starting at home, we can give our kids the foundation for kindness habits that will last a lifetime. Who knows? One day you might even complain that your kids are too kind.

Can You Help? We are looking for a group of parents to team up and help us with the running of two fundraisers next term.

Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser—27th July On Saturday 27th July, we have been given a Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser. We are looking for a team of parents to organise this fundraiser. The main organisational tasks for this will be to organise the food, a roster of helpers overseeing the BBQ on the day.

Book Fair—29th July—2nd August Our annual Scholastic Book Fair will run from Monday 29th July to Friday 2nd August. The main organisational tasks will be setting up the Book Fair and organising a roster for the fair to be open each morning and afternoon for the week. We will also need several parents to assist by volunteering to help by manning the fair. If you can help out with either of these fundraisers, please contact Fiona.

STUDENT ABSENCES “Every Day Counts” If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify their school as soon as possible on the day of absence using one of the following methods: Telephone: the school office and let the staff know

your child’s name, class, date of absences and rea-son.

Email: the school and provide the staff with your child ’s name, class, date of absences and reason.

Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility.
